| Bob Woodward: A "Very Senior" White House Staffer Threatened, "You're Going to Regret Challenging Us" on Our Sequester NarrativeWonderful. Woodward, of course, claims Obama himself must not know about this and that he'd be scandalized if he knew his aides were pursuing a Do Not Dare Question Us strategy with reporters. Because we all know Obama is so at ease when he's challenged. Update: A "very senior" White House staffer, it's now said. Video: At The Right Scoop. More: Sexton traces this to the dispute over who came up with the sequester -- first the White House was intent on claiming Republicans proposed it, but then, when Woodward pointed out it had come straight from the White House, suddenly the media began claiming, in unison, it just didn't matter who'd come up with it. Well the White House sure seems to think it matters.CommentsPosted by: Socktopus at February 27, 2013 06:11 PM (1FLBb) 2

Thing is, Woodward isn't going to be intimidated. He's already criticized the news media's refusal to look critically at Benghazi. He may be a liberal, but he does believe that it is the job of the news media to examine what the government does.

OT: Days before the March 1 deadline, Senate Republicans are circulating a draft bill that would cancel $85 billion in across-the-board spending cuts and instead turn over authority to President Barack Obama to achieve the same level of savings under a plan to be filed by March 8. So exactly why Teh Fcuk do we even need a minority party in the senate? Or a Senate at all? WARNING! And he had absolutely nothing to do with Fast and Furious; that was entirely the DOJ, and was actually started under Bush even though it wasn't but who cares about facts amiright?

Yes, yes, words fail, as they have for so long. But as my telepathic skills have atrophied, here's a few inadequate words. A Third World country. That's what we have become, in the civic arena, specifically at the national level. Stunning. Imagine ..... this .... during ..... Dubya's presidency. Go ahead. Try to imagine 1) it happening, or anyone above the dumbest son-of-an-old-friend political appointee (used to be found mostly in Commerce, during 41's days, was called "Bush Gardens" or "the dumping ground" - even thinking about saying it 2) the reaction. You wouldn't be able to find the sports scores, weather, or traffic in any "news" medium, due to the 1,000% breathless hysterical "coverage" of this thuggish, un-American, Third World occurrence. Oh - and "surely Comrade Stalin would be outraged if only he knew what was being done in his name!" Posted by: non-purist at February 27, 2013 06:35 PM (afQnV) 111

The Obama Regime Style Guide
For use in all communications ANYTHING POSITIVE: Obama was RIGHT THERE, pushing it along and making sure it got done. ANYTHING NEGATIVE: Obama had NO IDEA it was happening. None. In fact he was probably asleep at the time. Unless sleeping would have been equally bad, in which case he WASN'T sleeping, but was probably up at his desk in the Oval Office, squinting at columns of numbers in a SQL datasheet and doing mental calculus to figure out the exact location of North Korea's next missile launch. They'll tear him down, call him senile, and dismiss his opinions as "anachronistic holdovers from an earlier era." They'll give him a bit of leeway, because he IS Woodward. But if he pushes too much more they'll bring the hammer down.

what was naive about FDR's foreign policy Posted by: JDP All three leaders were trying to establish an agenda for governing post-war Germany. Churchill's attitude towards the Soviet Union differed vastly from that of Roosevelt, with the former believing Stalin to be a "devil"-like tyrant leading a vile system.[1] In 1942, U.S. Ambassador to the Soviet Union William Christian Bullitt, Jr.'s thesis prophesied the "flow of the Red amoeba into Europe". Roosevelt responded to Bullitt, Jr., with a statement summarizing his rationale for wartime relations with Stalin:[2] I just have a hunch that Stalin is not that kind of a man.... and I think that if I give him everything I possibly can and ask for nothing from him in return, noblesse oblige, he won't try to annex anything and will work with me for a world of democracy and peace.[2] —Franklin D. FDR-Executive Order 9066, dated February 19, 1942, gave the military broad
powers to ban any citizen from a fifty- to sixty-mile-wide coastal area stretching from Washington state to California and extending inland into southern Arizona. The order also authorized transporting these citizens to assembly centers hastily set up and governed by the military in California, Arizona, Washington state, and Oregon. Although it is not well known, the same executive order (and other war-time orders and restrictions) were also applied to smaller numbers of residents of the United States who were of Italian or German descent. For example, 3,200 resident aliens of Italian background were arrested and more than 300 of them were interned. About 11,000 German residents—including some naturalized citizens—were arrested and more than 5000 were interned. Yet while these individuals (and others from those groups) suffered grievous violations of their civil liberties, the war-time measures applied to Japanese Americans were worse and more sweeping, uprooting entire communities and targeting citizens as well as resident aliens. Willo-ette, ever heard of the Nihau Incident?
Dec 7th, 1941. A damaged A6M2 Zero-sen of the First Air Fleet crashed on the small Hawaiian island of Nihau. A nisei of the island allied himself with the pilot and tried to take the island over. The other people of the island had to kill them both. Or inside the camps, there was a core of Japanese-Americans who would scream Banzai! and agitate for Imperial Japan's war against the US. Yet while these individuals (and others from those groups) suffered grievous violations of their civil liberties, the war-time measures applied to Japanese Americans were worse and more sweeping, uprooting entire communities and targeting citizens as well as resident aliens. And were completely sensible. Japanese immigration to CA included a lot of people who came just to work, and still considered themselvesJapanese. They even sent their kids back to Japan for education (as some Japanese do to this day in Hawaii). Furthermore, some Japanese had helped provide information to the IJN re Pearl Harbor and such. Being a little dodgy about having them around naval bases was just prudence. And as for civil liberties, they can be a luxury in wartime. Recall that Lincoln closed several opposition newspapers, and suspended the writ of habeas corpus. Posted by: Jay Guevara at February 27, 2013 07:24 PM (IDSI7) 332

If you have to get by with less, then I am truly sorry, but why do you think you should be immune from economic pressure? (c) Of course, this is the reason it is so hard to cut. everyone in gov. works for gov. and no one can imagine the downside to free markets. But the upside is only possible because of the downside, so maybe the salary you earn factors in the risk. or maybe you are overlooking all the risk, and hard times, that everyone in the country is facing. The Japanese did inter Italians when the country switched sides in WWII. It is SOP to inter foreign nationals in a time of declared war. Keeps them out of mischief like sabotage while protecting them from possibly irate locals. Though even in WWII, Japan managed to violate those accords - look at the American civilians in the Philippines or Dutch civilians in the Dutch East Indies.

The stock market rising is just an indicator that they're investing their
money ( that they had elsewhere) in stocks. Doesn't mean good things, doesn't mean bad things. The stock market diving on Oct '29 as the beginning of the depression is a myth. There were other problems. Now when they start selling is the time to be a little more leery as it means they're buying something else to keep their money safe and productive (sometimes neither). You can't predict the economy by watching a game of texas hold 'em. The stock market usually is not anticipatory. They're not fucking seers over there. And as for civil liberties, they can be a luxury in
wartime. Recall that Lincoln closed several opposition newspapers, and suspended the writ of habeas corpus. Posted by: Jay Guevara at February 27, 2013 07:24 PM (IDSI7) Another factor in the Japanese internments that tends to get glossed over, is that even Japanese with unquestioned loyalty to their adopted country might fall victim to blackmail by the Imperial Japanese Secret Service, which body kept records of foreign-living Japanese and their relatives still in the home islands. Further, a population of ethnic Japanese near tidewater could provide a hiding place for spies landed by submarines. Possibly not for a long time, but long enough for them to accomplish their missions, perhaps. Finally, if the Japanese had been able to carry out a massive sneak attack or sabotage, the local ethnic Japanese population might have fallen victim to reprisal attacks, or be caught up in the response to the initial assault. The real sin of the Japanese internment was not that it was done at all, but that it was done in such a way that cronies of the government profited handsomely from the sale of confiscated Japanese property; at least that is how it went down here in Canada. A: Woodward has been in Washington too long and he knows Obama either ordered it or at least knew it would be done. B: Woodward just gave the administration an out by letting themunder-bus some flunky. Posted by: Mikey NTH - Pirate Scum of Umbar at February 28, 2013 10:32 AM (hLRSq) 493
Valerie Jarrett is apparently coming unglued.Woodward essentially called her out as the VERY senior presidential "aide"(read 'controller') of the president who threatened him. It's good for the country that the thuggery is becoming more public so the not-so-bright supporters of this administration can see what we have here.It might not work out so well for Woodward, however.
