The Madness of King Barky: Obama Refuses to Deploy an Aircraft Carrier to the Persian Gulf, Claiming the Sequester Just Won't Let Him

Bob Woodward is calls it "a madness" he hasn't seen before.

"Can you imagine Ronald Reagan sitting there and saying, 'Oh, by the way, I can't do this because of some budget document?'" Woodward said.

"Or George W. Bush saying, 'You know, I'm not going to invade Iraq because I can't get the aircraft carriers I need?'" Or even Bill Clinton saying, 'You know, I'm not going to attack Saddam Hussein's intelligence headquarters,' ... because of some budget document?"

The Defense Department said in early February that it would not deploy the U.S.S. Harry Truman to the Persian Gulf, citing budget concerns relating to the looming cuts known as the sequester.

"Under the Constitution, the President is commander-in-chief and employs the force. And so we now have the President going out because of this piece of paper and this agreement. 'I canít do what I need to do to protect the country,'" Woodward said.

"Thatís a kind of madness that I haven't seen in a long time," he said.

They have been coasting for awhile.

What's really bad is when our economy is doing poorly and the natural instinct of many is to de-prioritize defense--at the same time-- in a global economy-- a lot of other places are doing poorly in an economic sense.

His speeches didn't make the stimulus more popular, Obamacare more popular, get taxes raised for everyone. He has saddled the treasury with massive debt, burdened the nation's businesses with unnecessary regulation, demonized anyone who is successfull (except Hollywood), defunded the military and introduced social controversy into their ranks, sucked up to our enemies, and insulted our allies.

He never does a single thing good for the country, not even for the blacks he supposedly is "fighting for." Has he done anything to encourage black kids to avoid early pregnancy and get an education? No. Has he praised black scholars and pointed out that there are other ways to succeed besides basketball and hip hop? No.

He has done nothing but divide and insult almost every person in this country, by his speech or by his actions.

Yep. The U.S. nuclear umbrella is becoming a little threadbare. I'd love to see my country make noises about withdrawing from the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, and the Nuclear Test Ban treaty (as if...).

Of all the nations currently not in the Nuclear Club, Canada probably has the best combination of resources, wealth, and expertise needed to join it with a big bang.

205 Barky didn't go mad over night. Woodward just refused to report it in order to ensure his reelection. So, fuck you, Bob.

Me? I'm just going to enjoy it.

Welcome home, prodigal son Bob Woodward. Partake of this feast.

You don't think the father of the prodigal son really didn't think his kid was an ass, do you?

"I told you so" feels good (really good, in fact) but the left so hates Republicans that they'll cut off their nose to spite their Republican face.

Look how many tweeters and internet trolls (and NY aldermen) are doing nothing but "Ha, we got you, you racist wingnuts!" They are happy to raise their own taxes just because they can get us.

They passed the lawyer-enriching Violence Against Women Act and yet would disarm women who are victims of stalkers or violent ex's. Why? Because "rednecks" like guns and they don't like "rednecks" so they want gun control.

They are not even persuaded by arguments showing that UK and Australia have higher violent crime rates after gun control. It's all about getting us.

This is a pillar of liberalism: bete noire. They MUST have somebody to hate. They define themselves by whom they hate. There's always somebody getting in the way of utopia.

The scuttle I've heard is that the only thing Japan lacks to detonate a nuclear weapon is the political approval to actually do it.

Allegedly, they already have the fuel, design, and know-how in place, and they could literally have a functional bomb built in a matter of months.

As a few others have said, one way or another - so what? There's any surprise at ANYTHING that is done - or not done - now?

I spent most of my life working in foreign policy/national security in the Beltway and abroad. Since the Clinton years it's been a steady decline in seriousness in the public understanding of the world, and - with the exception, for the most part, of the Dubya years - a dizzying collapse in the quality of personnel. Of course the hysteria that commenced in 2003/4 over Iraq - in the already completely collapsed "press", in the Beltway community, among the already insane Dems, a huge swath of the GOP/"conservatives", and of course the general populace - took us over the edge.

The 2008 election remains surreal. This president and most of his appointees have no business in any public service job of consequence, much less in the top jobs of what was once the greatest country on Earth. It's beyond ridiculous, and beyond words. My former DC colleagues I still talk with finally agree with me that it is all now surreal. Almost nothing - not the appointment of a Brennan, the entire story of Benghazi, the knifing of Poland and the Czechs on missile defense, the Honduras outrage, the absurd Cairo speech (and on, and on, and on) - none of it - was even conceivable as little as 20 years ago.

Woodward can go f himself. He's not the dumbest of the very dumb Beltway elite, but he's right in the pack. Nothing but conventional wisdom and "access" and often being used by very unimpressive public figures for their own purposes.

As some here have noted, this all falls right on the shoulders of your brother, your wife, your neighbor, your co-worker, your boss, your softball teammate, your local fireman, your fishing buddies - THEY are what have degraded the country, in a zillion different ways, to the point where lawlessness, incompetence, racism, corruption, failure, envy, and indulgence of authoritarian instincts are the NORM. The accepted, even celebrated, norm. Yes, the "elites" and institutions have collapsed from within as well - the SCOTUS/federal judiciary, the Congress, the press, even the military brass. The degradation has not been uniform, worse in some areas than others. But there it is.

Bluntly, the atomic bomb was built with 1940s technology.

Japan has been working with nuclear reactors and technology for 40 years now, since the 1970s, and if there is one thing Japan does not lack, its engineering and technological competency.

So yeah, it would be shocking if Japan could NOT quickly assemble a nuclear weapon if it wanted to. They allegedly have several tons of plutonium handy, and the facilities with which to enrich it (if they haven't already done so). They also have advanced ballistic and re-entry technology, meaning they could probably assemble the equivalent of an ICBM if they wanted to.

My understanding is that there are multiple internal legal hurdles to doing so. Obviously, in the wake of WWII, the Japanese population is a "little" sensitive to the danger of nuclear weapons, and they've set up legal obstacles to having "offensive" military capabilities, including specific prohibitions against construction or possessing functional nukes.

More to the point, since everyone knows Japan "could" have them pretty quickly if they wanted to, that alone acts as a nuclear deterrent. So Japan can have most of the strategic benefit of having a nuclear arsenal without actually having one.

334 9 Actually, I've been thinking how Obama & Michelle have been acting more and more like royalty. It's really repulsive.
___________________________

Actual royalty cost far less than the imperial Obama family.

The Obamas spent $1.4 Billion tax dollars on themselves and their staff last year. The British royal family (including all the dimwit cousins and crazy aunts) only cost the British $58 million for the same period. The Obamas live a lavish lifestyle that real royal families can only dream about.

Why are taxpayers paying the Obamas' dog walker a $100k a year salary as a federal employee? If the Obama kids want a pet, that's their business, but expenses related to the family pet should be coming out of Obama's $400k salary or his multi-million-dollar book royalties, not out of taxpayers' pockets. The family pet is in no way a legitimate expense associated with the office of President. Also, why does Michelle Obama have dozens of staffers, including a full-time make-up artist, when she has not been elected to any office, and plays only a minor role in government, in a purely symbolic position? If Obama wants a full-time flunkie to glue on her false eyelashes and tell her she's gorgeous, let her pay for it from her own funds, not ours.

We could easily cut $85 billion out of the federal budget. Start by cutting $1 billion of the Obamas' yearly expenses (leaving them a paltry $400 million a year to finance their lavish lifestyle).

Then cut federal funding for Head Start. Multiple credible studies, some by the government itself, have proven that it provides no lasting benefits. It is basically just a taxpayer-funded daycare program for low-income kids. We don't need it, can't afford it, and funding it is not a legitimate function for the federal government.

Next, stop permitting illegal aliens to receive food stamps and other welfare benefits. It is a blatant violation of federal law for the Obama administration to be encouraging and aiding illegal aliens in this manner -- yet the administration has been openly and shamelessly doing it for years, and Congress has done nothing to stop it. It costs taxpayers billions of dollars a year. Put an end to it.

Next, defund NPR. It is nothing but a liberal propaganda program, and the federal government has no business financing it. Sesame Street and Big Bird have already shown they can survive just fine without government aid.

Next, defund Planned Parenthood. It is the world's largest abortion provider, and it can continue doing the same work without funding from taxpayers. The fact that PP occasionally refers a woman to another (outside) provider for a mammogram does not make PP an essential provider of "women's health care." It is an abortion mill, and taxpayers should not be funding it.

Next, end all federal agricultural subsidies and "green energy" subsidies, and eliminate the stupid ethanol requirements.

Doing just these few things would eliminate far more than $85 billion from the federal budget -- and we would not have to sacrifice our national security or set foreign criminals loose to prey upon Americans.
