The Social Negotiation Process of Humor

Specifically, humor at someone else's expense. Mild-mannered humor or self-deprecating humor doesn't need this sort of a negotiation.

I've talked about this before but never this clearly.

Laughter can be modeled as a three-party game in which the parties bargain for inclusion in a two-party coalition (wit and listener) that excludes the third (the butt). No one party can dictate what is risible. Instead, the selection of butts is a matter of negotiation between wit and listener. The wit proposes a butt for laughter, and this offer may be accepted by the listener through a return of laughter or rejected through silence. In such a laughter exchange, individuals may be seen to trade off butts through implicit agreements about who is risible. These bargains determine what counts as a comic vice...

I've mentioned that while the joke-teller (the "wit") is free to make any joke he likes, only the listeners, in concert with him, can decide together that the joke works or is funny or that the target is a valid one (and targeted for the right reasons).

Sometimes people will propose just "joking about how dumb Obama is," and while I agree he is kind of dumb, I don't see that as a likely avenue for widespread transmission of the idea. Too many people would disagree that that's a valid target, and hence, wouldn't laugh. And hence, while the joke may work for a smaller audience (engaged conservative partisans) it would fail at the purpose for which it is deployed (shifting the conventional wisdom of the public).*

Even though it wasn't humorous, I'm pretty confident a similar social bargaining principle underlay Romney's frequent statements that "Obama is a nice guy, but he's in over his head." I think he believed (and polling would back him up) that Obama was adjudged a "nice guy" by 55% of the public, but only a minority had confidence in his ability to do the job to which he was elected. Ergo, he made the case upon which Obama was vulnerable and avoided the case which would be more difficult.

This post is very apropos given that leftists around the blogosphere are right now claiming "I just don't see why Michelle Malkin's funny dances are funny." Well, the media -- which swears it's not liberal -- doesn't understand how anything at all about Obama or liberalism could possibly be funny. They don't agree that these things have any "comedic vice" in them at all to be valid targets of joking.

Thus, the stone-faced act.

* There's also a misguided anti-racism that thwarts such a joke. Too many people would automatically think "Gee I can never say a black person is dumb, that would be racist" without pausing to consider the more sophisticated idea that that itself is racially condescending -- that such a "rule" that black folks can never be, for reasons best left unsaid, treated Just Like Everyone Else, is itself a bit racist.

Obviously you wouldn't want to have to explain that in the middle of your joke!

Glenn Reynolds, I think, had a sneak attack on this at least for a while. He’d replace Obama with Bush or Palin or whoever, and then after the (expected) laugh, do an “oops”.

Which of course switches the “butt” from Obama to the listener, which probably isn’t helpful. But it is at least temporarily shaming.

14 Humor, how does that work? So many target rich areas to mock this administration and the ruling Democrats, but "comedians" (ie. SNL, Letterman, Kimmel, Conana O'Brien, etc.) can't find anything funny about our current Democrat controlled gubamint. John Kerry's recent WTF speech in Germany, Menedez and his underaged hookers, gaffetastic Joe Biden (the gift that never stops giving), idiocy that gushes from Nancy Pelosi on a weekly basis, Debbie Wasserman Schulz, the inanities uttered from the very lips of our Dear Leader, Jack Lew, Chuck Hagel, the list goes on and on. In their determination to be the palace guard who protects Obama from anything stupid he or any other Democrat says, "comedians" are ignoring a treasure trove of funneh.

Ace, it just seems to me (personal anecdote here, based purely upon observation) that conservatives as a whole are a lot happier than liberals. Yes,we morons make jokes and make fun of the various liberals out there, poking at them and deriding them, but we generally have a good time, and laugh and joke about other things- eg. SMOD, crossbows v long bows, etc. andjust seem to get along (kind of like a college freshman dormitory, if you will) and this is generallya fun andhappy place to be.

On the other hand, liberals seem to be naturally unhappy people. The only fun they seem to have is makingfun of conservatives, and saying nasty things about them. That seems to be about the extent (and ability) of their "comedy"; otherwise, they just sit around glaring at one anotherand whining about how unfair things are, anddeluding each other about how great the SCOAMF is.

66 You can boil this down a lot farther. When someone is the "butt" of a joke, they too can still find the humorous device funny. Fail to find a joke about conservatism funny and ANY liberal will tell you to lighten up, and that a healthy, developed sense of humor includes being able to find humor in jokes where your most cherished values are the butt.

Item number 14423566 on the list of liberal hypocrisy. Jokes about liberalism "just aren't funny"

Hence the crash and burn of the Goode Family. Conservatives could laugh at Hank Hill, even though Hill represented the values of most conservatives. Liberals can't laugh at Gerald Goode because he represents their values.

Hence liberals don't possess the sense of humor they say conservatives should have.

70 Sometimes people will propose just "joking about how dumb Obama is," and while I agree he is kind of dumb, I don't see that as a likely avenue for widespread transmission of the idea. Too many people would disagree that that's a valid target, and hence, wouldn't laugh. And hence, while the joke may work for a smaller audience (engaged conservative partisans) it would fail at the purpose for which it is deployed (shifting the conventional wisdom of the public).*

I have to disagree on this point, ace. The fact is, throughout this country's history the office of the President has been ripe for humor. As has been mentioned on this blog before, some of SNL's funniest skits were their politically-based ones. Regardless of your political bent it was easy to laugh at Drew Carrey's Bush or Perot, or Phil Hartman's Reagan, orwhatshisname's Gore (I can never, ever, EVER remember his damn name). Joking about the President and his appointees is as American as apple pie, regardless of whether or not it shifts the public's conventional wisdom about the person in office. The public EXPECTS it.

Your point about race is true, but all the more damning. If the humor community (if we call them that) finds they need to fall back on, "We can't make jokes about Obama because he's black, and even jokes that have nothing to do with his skin color would be considered racist," then they're already past help and it's pointless to even bother talking about them.

I'm not a big fan of taboo humor, but I'm also aware that humor which pushes the envelope is humor that makes people think and makes them talk. If the humor community has given up not just on pushing the envelope, but has created its OWN envelope which it then refuses to push (that being that Obama jokes are verboten), then it's time to find some different funnymen (and women).

85 This post is very apropos given that leftists around the blogosphere are right now claiming "I just don't see why Michelle Malkin's funny dances are funny." Well, the media -- which swears it's not liberal -- doesn't understand how anything at all about Obama or liberalism could possibly be funny. They don't agree that these things have any "comedic vice" in them at all to be valid targets of joking.

I will say that I didn't find FLOTUS dancing to be funny but that's mainly because every time I went to youtube without being logged into my account, that fucking video of her dancing was the top video on the home page. Michelle Malkin defended the use of internment camps for Japanese-Americans during WWII because, according to her research, there were many in that community whose loyalties were questionable and thus posed a real security threat early in the war when fears of mainland invasion were reasonably well-grounded. Insofar as I know, she has never advocated rounding up and interning Muslims.

Malkin is also a pioneer in conservative new media, and is the founder of both Hot Air and Twitchy. She is also very telegenic and servesan excellent conservative face and voice in national media outlets. She's a solid writer, as well.

I think she's great, in short. If we need new voices, we need more like hers.

-------------------
The reason that so many lefty comedians cease to be funny when they attack conservatives is because they are attacking a strawman. Jokes rely on at least a kernel of truth. (You can make jokes about Obama's big ears but you can't make jokes about him being short.)
The leftist has a comic- book view of what a "conservative" is, not a real knowledge. His jokes will amuse those who share his distorted view but not those who are (or really know) actual conservatives. For example, a joke about "conservatives" that pokes fun at their wealth and greed or depicts them as racist will not work with me any better than a joke laughing at Obama's obesity.

Jeff Fozworthy's schtick about rednecks works because he KNOWS them.

It's also why their jokes about us never work.

"I'm from the government and I'm here to help" is FUNNY, because it perfectly describes everyone's shared experience with government bureaucracy. The left is the wing of nanny staters, but even THEY have to go through the DMV, the IRS, the EPA...

On the other hand, "Teabaggers," while humorous in a gutter-level way, is completely devoid from the truth. No one can look at the blue-haired grandmas with their beach chairs and pitchers of lemonade who make up a solid chunk of your average TEA Party rally and think "Teabaggers" is anything but a reflection of the idiots who coined the term.

Dude, read the book. I read it. The whole point of her book is to defend what happened during WW2 and make the same parallels to the war on terror. She isn't defending GITMO, she's saying just as in WW2 Muslim-Americans have divided loyalties, should be racially profiled and watched (invoking the Patriot Act) and then a significant number of them put in internment camps for having anti-American attitudes.

Read the effing book. Her conclusion is right in the damn title.

178 @ace

"Sometimes people will propose just "joking about how dumb Obama is," and while I agree he is kind of dumb, I don't see that as a likely avenue for widespread transmission of the idea. Too many people would disagree that that's a valid target, and hence, wouldn't laugh. And hence, while the joke may work for a smaller audience (engaged conservative partisans) it would fail at the purpose for which it is deployed (shifting the conventional wisdom of the public).*"

Well, that's the puzzle. You say that there's too much of an audience that would disagree Obama is dumb. But isn't part of the goal to change the minds of those people?

I'm not saying it's easy. Changing people's minds can be hard, and comedy is damn hard. But I keep seeing (particularly in conservative circles) this attitude of 'Well, people X disagree with everyone on this subject, so we'll just have to accept that.' instead of consider ways to change people's minds about X.

If you ever listen to the Ricky Gervais podcast that is made especially clear.

Karl, the idiot, is meant to represent everything stupid, ignorant, and provincial.

Gervais and Merchant ruthlessly mock him and his small-minded beliefs -- especially anything that smacks of religion or nationalism.

What's funny is their reaction when he questions some leftist shibboleth. One time he said that he didn't recycle. Didn't see the point. Thought it was a waste of time.

They went into full outrage mode. How dare you? You planet-killing sinner! Heretic! Heretic!

into a Malkin thread.

As far as your points re: Malkin and internment (either for the Japanese in WWII or American Muslims today), this is dead on. It was a stupid position, it was even stupider to write an idiotic book defending the stupid position, and yes, it (deservedly) caused significant damage her credibility as a public face of conservatism. She's done a lot since then, but she will always be thought of in many quarters as "that silly woman who defended Japanese internment in the context of recommending analogous treatment for Muslims"...and why shouldn't she be?

But...but...Malkin is not dumb. A smart person is perfectly capable of taking (and vociferously defending) a retardedly stupid or immoral political position...surely I don't have to cite to examples here. What I give Malkin credit for is her internet entrepreneurship. When Twitchy first launched I thought to myself "dear lord, what a dumb idea...it'll never last." Now I realize I'm clicking through to it at least four or five times a week, and that their Twitter aggregation actually fills a gap and adds value.

I don't want Michelle Malkin put forth as the face of conservatism, for the simple reason that she actively advocates for things that are morally reprehensible (and she's a bad historian, to boot). But she's not some sort of dead-weight loss, and if conservatives are stuck deep in a hole in terms of internet infrastructure, it's people like Malkin who are taking the first steps towards digging us out of it, for which she should be saluted.

And yet we keep spending and spending and spending. If the House were conservative we would have voted Boner out. Enough words, time to judge people by their actions, or inactions.

252 People blow off and ignore anger and indignation- even when they agree with you. It has something to do with our defense mechanisms. So the shield go up when when we sense rage.

Humor cuts through defenses. Hence you will find conservatives laughing at Jon Stewart when he is mocking them. They laugh while he castrates their very being. Now that ability is political power.

When did they grab this route to isolating their enemies? SNL?

253 How would you describe the hook that makes a joke potentially funny? I touched on this in the other thread. But it's not simply whether the butt is a categorically appropriate butt, there's something more. There has to be some fit between the joke and its target, a context that makes it potentially funny. Here, it is the mocking of Her silly dancing (part of a pattern of unserious behavior) combined/contrasted with commentary on policy choices. I'm not LOLing, but I see the humor.

Still, I don't think liberals are being intentionally dense in this case based on a categorical rejection of mockery of Her Eminence, though that is a preexisting impediment: Romney had great biting lines at the Alfred Smith dinner and many liberals got sulky, for example. I think liberals don't even see what the hook is to be offended or protective in this case. They find Michelle's dancing to be simply fun and endearing.

Without seeing the hook there, some context for why her dancing would be a basis of humor, they can't even get offended. I think there is a difference between not getting a joke and getting offended based on the target. For instance, hobbling around while throwing candy into the air in an attempt to portray Mother Theresa, perhaps as a commentary on religious charity would be offensive to many based on who the butt of the joke is. They also may not get the joke, but that takes a back seat to the first objection.

In this case, liberals don't see what the hook is. And once you have to explain it...you just seem kind of belligerent, in that the problems conservatives have may seem to go beyond policy and into something more personal.

Having a favorable impression of someone and thus not getting a joke versus rejecting any jokes of a favored person can be two sides of the same coin, but at least here, I think liberals just really don't get they why (not the who) of the joke.

I can agree with you here. I just wish she'd do more entrepreneuring and less opining. My point is people listen to her more than they should. Visit twitchy, stop inviting her to talkshows.

On a separate subject from her altogether, overall I'm rather tired and disappointed with most of the talking heads. I still listen to Rush and Beck (only when driving), but can't stomach Hannity at all. He's so repetitive and intractable in the way he sees things. Always the same guests saying always the same things... listening to them depresses me. I've found a lot of local talking heads here in TX that I much prefer.

256 194 ---" However the whole "we're funny and truthful and they aren't" is perfectly divided among political lines. Liberals think the same exact thing in reverse. I'd like to think that is because we are just so right, and they can't hack it, but more than likely it is the simple fact that people just plain don't like being the butt of the joke."
Posted by: Heralder at February 26, 2013 02:11 PM (+xmn4)
------------
I didn't say "we're funny and truthful and they aren't," nor that "we are just so right." I AM saying that many liberals, especially those in show-biz, have a strawman view of conservatives. A conservative, especially one in show-biz, knows liberals, REAL liberals, all too well.
When you say it's just a matter of people not wanting to be the butt of the joke, I firmly disagree. Who pays good money to listen to Jeff Foxworthy? Plenty of rednecks do. I love humor that makes fun of women's foibles, even if, perhaps especially if, it hits home. But it must ring true to experience.

I turned off all political talk radio the day after the election, and I haven't switched back once since then. It's either sports-talk or CDs for the foreseeable future.

258 I think this "using humor to isolate and dis-empower" mechanism is related to entertainment as a whole. We relax during entertainment, and let all those images slide into the brain sans defense mechanism.

Often this process occurs without pausing to review how they might shape our perceptions. This includes listening to music. Every ad executive in the world understands this process. Ironic idea: Is our present situation the result of a marketing plan devised during the 50s?

Posted by: I'd rather be surfin at February 26, 2013 02:44 PM (g5wi5)

259 I've not spotted any future conservative "Jon Stewarts" on the horizen within the personalities that speak on cable news, podcasts etc. The best examples of that level of "cool wit" are found within printed satire on blogs. (such as this one) An idea thrown out: Planning to reverse the status quo could include recruiting those individuals, beginning the process of training them in public speaking and televised comedy. It would be wise to not throw them out into public view immediately without extensive training and practice. Even high school students competing in broadcasting and comedy competitions at the state level did not get to that level without in-depth preparation and months of regional competions before going for a state title-- and that exposure is for 17 year olds. We take our budding talents and throw them to the wolves without nurturing their novice abilities into the masters. THAT process has been nailed down by liberals for decades guys. They don't just pop out onto the stage as stars. Someone mentored them first.

I can't listen to Hannity. He bores me due to the repetition, the inability to be witty or even laugh at himsel. His greatest flaw is the interruption of guests whose opinion I wished to hear. He will never enlarge his audience due to that engrained flaw.

He has a solid following but will never appeal to the under 30 group in any significant numbers. Even the conservative and libertarian students are turned off.

Conservative and libertarian media (and what little is found in entertainment) had better start planning, recruiting and training for the future. The talent is out there but they need mentors and sponsors.
