Anti-doom story of the morning:

Jhaqueil Reagan's luck appears to have changed after a chance encounter with an Indiana restaurant owner Art Bouvier during a 10-mile trek through ice and snow for a minimum wage job interview in Indianapolis. Struck by his dedication, Mr Bouvier told him that he would double his salary if he came to work for him at his restaurant, Papa Roux...

14 This isn't in the link dump, but in all seriousness, folks -- if you live in or around LA, be careful. We don't need any of the few intelligent people still living in Cali to catch TB. We need you around for after the burning time to help us recultivate the Golden State!

Downtown L.A. TB outbreak: LAPD urges officers to wear masks
LA Times: http://tiny.cc/hv93sw

Los Angeles police over the weekend warned officers who patrol the skid row area to wear protective masks and minimize face-to-face contact with suspects or the public if there is reason to believe that they are infected with tuberculosis.

The warning, contained in an internal communication to officers and employees in the department's Central Division, comes after The Times reported that public health officials have launched a new, coordinated effort to contain what they are calling the largest TB outbreak in a decade.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have dispatched scientists to Los Angeles to help local health officials gain a better understanding why TB is spreading and strategies on how to stop it...

The problem with outbreaks, unfortunately, is that in a densely populated area they can spread like wildfire. So stay safe!

64 NEW YORK (AP) -- Consumers' confidence in the economy likely stayed low in February, providing more evidence of the fallout from an increase in Social Security taxes that has left most Americans with less take-home pay this year.

Higher taxes? Are they sure it's not the Italian election? They usually come up with some incredibly stupid excuse for bad news.

The subdued confidence and spending comes as the economy is showing signs of improvement elsewhere.

A recovery in housing market is looking more sustainable and is expected to gain momentum this year. Stocks have been rallying.

Still, the unemployment rate remains stubbornly high, rising to 7.9
percent in January from 7.8 percent in December. In January, employers
added 157,000 jobs.

So outside of all of the bad news the economy is doing great

Definitely. Part of the design of Obamacare was to make seniors unable to make ends meet. In a decade or so, if the Dems' plan comes to fruition, those visuals will be part of the media campaign for the Dems' final push for single payer.

= "Texas Has An 8.8 Billion Surplus"

Of course. Outside of the coffee klatches and sewing circles of the chattering classes the reality is that elections, policies, laws and leadership have major consequences. It makes a difference who's in charge.

Undoubtedly. And if conservatives stay home in substantial numbers she'll win, all but guaranteed.

69 The migration scene in Ten Commandments was the longest and most expensive single shot, with the largest number of participants, ever filmed. deMille was on his ladder, shot the flare gun, and the whole procession proceeded. As the last of the camel-dung dust settled, his chief cinematographer, who'd been stationed in the hills for the long shot, came careening in in a Jeep, yelling "Ready when you are, C.B.!"

Just to fuck with him. The shot was in the can.

deMille had a heart attack on the spot, and never recovered.

In news about people who need a punch:

Singer Morrissey has canceled his appearance tonight on Jimmy Kimmel Live citing moral reasons instead of health concerns.

The outspoken vegan and PETA advocate said in a statement that he objects to another of Kimmel's scheduled guests, stars of the AE reality series Duck Dynasty, who make products for duck hunting. The statement, posted yesterday on the fan site True to You, said that while the singer is "thankful" to have been invited to perform on Kimmel, "he cannot morally be on a television program where the cast members of Duck Dynasty will also be guests. Morrissey would be honored to play the show, if Duck Dynasty were removed."

The singer is quoted as saying, "As far as my reputation is concerned, I can't take the risk of being on a show alongside people who, in effect, amount to animal serial killers. If Jimmy cannot dump Duck Dynasty then we must step away."

74 On Monday, the Steering Committee of the Alabama Republican Party passed a resolution demanding that Sen. Richard Shelby retract his support of former Sen. Chuck Hagel (R-NE) to be Secretary of Defense, according to a report in the American Spectator. The highly unusual step reflects growing concern among the Republican grassroots about Hagel's positions on a variety of foreign policy issues, including Israel, the Spectator reports.
Shelby revealed last week that he intended to vote for Hagel. The announcement was treated by the media as a surprise, as it appeared to break Republican unity against Hagel. However, Shelby has supported a number of Hagel's controversial stances over the years. In 2007, for example, he joined Hagel in refusing to sign a letter to then-Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice asking her to encourage "friendly" Arab states to recognize Israel.
In announcing his decision last week, Shelby explained that he believed that whoever the Obama administration might nominate in Hagel's stead would be worse: "He was a pretty good Senator...I don't like a lot of things he's said, but you've got to think who would come after him." The party's base feels otherwise. As the American Spectator's Quin Hillyer reported Monday: "It has been an outpouring from people across the state,” State Republican Chairman Bill Armistead told me. “There have been phone calls from a lot of people, plus we’ve all been approached by people we know at churches and in our communities. I haven’t seen anything this strong in opposition to something done by one of our representatives in Congress in a long time.”
Hagel's confirmation is expected to receive a cloture vote Tuesday, followed by a formal vote of the Senate, which he is expected to win, largely along party lines. Opposition to Hagel is likely to be historic; no Secretary of Defense in recent history has been confirmed with more than three votes in opposition.

101 The Embassy of India criticized Secretary of Defense nominee Chuck Hagel for remarks he made in 2011 at Cameron University in Oklahoma, in which he alleged that India was using Afghanistan to sponsor terrorist attacks against neighboring Pakistan. The remarks were unearthed Monday by the Washington Free Beacon.
An embassy spokesperson told the Free Beacon: "“Such comments attributed to Sen. Hagel, who has been a long-standing friend of India and a prominent votary of close India-U.S. relations, are contrary to the reality of India’s unbounded dedication to the welfare of the Afghan people."
Hagel faces a confirmation vote Tuesday.

A recently discovered comet will make an uncomfortably close planetary flyby next year — but this time it's not Earth that's in the cosmic crosshairs. According to preliminary orbital prediction models, comet C/2013 A1 will buzz Mars on October 19, 2014. Early calculations suggest that the chance of impact is low — but that could change as new data emerges.

According to calculations by NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), close approach data suggests the comet is most likely to make a close pass of 0.0007 AU (that's approximately 63,000 miles from the Martian surface). However, due to uncertainties in the observations (the comet has only been observed for 74 days), it's difficult for astronomers to forecast the comet's precise location in 20 months time; comet C/2013 A1 may fly past at a very safe distance of 0.008 AU (650,000 miles). But to the other extreme, its orbital pass could put Mars directly in its path.

Flamboyant former NBA star Dennis Rodman is heading to North Korea with VICE media company--tattoos, piercings, bad-boy reputation and all.

The American known as "The Worm" is set to arrive Tuesday in Pyongyang, becoming an unlikely ambassador for sports diplomacy at a time of heightened tensions between the U.S. and North Korea.

Rodman, three members of the Harlem Globetrotters basketball team, a VICE correspondent and a production crew from the company are visiting North Korea to shoot footage for a new TV show set to air on HBO in early April, VICE told The Associated Press in an exclusive interview before the group's departure from Beijing.

It's the second high-profile American visit this year to North Korea, a country that remains in a state of war with the U.S. It also comes two weeks after North Korea conducted an underground nuclear test in defiance of U.N. bans against atomic and missile activity.

Google's executive chairman, Eric Schmidt, made a surprise four-day trip to Pyongyang, where he met with officials and toured computer labs in January, just weeks after North Korea launched a satellite into space on the back of a long-range rocket.

Worst case if the comet doesn't impact Mars? Still pretty good:

A flyby of that distance will mean that should C3/2013 A1 erupt with a tail and coma around its nucleus (as it becomes heated by solar radiation), our Mars rovers and orbiting armada of planetary observation satellites will have a very intimate view of this historic moment.

120 The big winner of the fight over Chuck Hagel’s nomination as Secretary of Defense is not President Barack Obama, but Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY). Democrats have called Paul’s views on Israel “deeply disturbing” because he wants to end foreign aid to Israel (eventually). Yet they have forever lost the ability to lecture anyone about their views on Israel, least of all Paul, who has made a serious effort to understand Israel’s challenges.
Here is a partial list of the bizarre views on Israel that Democrats have proven willing to accept in a high official by backing Hagel to lead the Pentagon, apparently unanimously.

They should have kept producing the F-22s ( at some pace even if they cut it back ) and developed a Navy Specific next generation plane for the Carriers and Marine specific Vetol for the Marines.

Previous Morrisey antics:
Morrissey made some mind boggling comments during his performance in Warsaw on Sunday:

He is talking about the "murder" of chickens, cows and fish. Not the people eating them. He has equated fast food to the holocaust, cause chickens and cows are the same as humans, or something.

So in that background and the contraction of defense suppliers - Lockheed-Martin and Northrop-Grumman to name two - here comes a plane that can do all these missions in the name of commonality and saving money.

So yes we are seeing the return of the F-111. But the blame does not lie totally within the DoD. It is nicely spread around. Up to and including Congress sticking their greasy mittens into the mess.

A doctor or a mechanic, eh? Those are kind of on completely opposite ends of the scale from each other, aren't they? In that one is dealing with the human body and the other is dealing with an auto body.

I'd tell the guy to push the kid to become a mechanic. Better money and less regulation.

266 Ivy League’s Cornell University Hosts Muslim Prayer Event, Shocked When Sermon Devolves Into Anti-Gay Rant…

When Muslim students and community members sat down for Friday prayer on Feb. 15 in Anabel Taylor Hall, they sought spiritual peace and a sense of solidarity with fellow Muslims.

What they encountered, however, was a sermon laden with homophobic slurs, according to attendees.

“Not all homosexuals are pedophiles, but all pedophiles are homosexuals,” the individual said, according to Ihsan Kabir ’14, president of the Committee for the Advancement of Muslim Culture.

The individual — who was previously a University employee — then shouted remarks targeting the LGBTQ community, criticizing President Barack Obama for “being too liberal” in his acceptance of homosexuality.

“Homosexuals are freaks and queers who want a pink earth,” the individual said, according to Kabir.

Not only did the individual target the LGBTQ community, but he also criticized how some Muslim women take off their hijab, or head scarf, after praying, according to Kabir.

After finding what they called clerical errors, military officials in Kabul said Tuesday that a 7 percent drop in “enemy initiated attacks” for the period from January through December 2012 reported last month will be corrected to show no change in the number of attacks during that span.

The 7 percent figure had been included in a report posted on the coalition’s website until it was removed recently without explanation. After The Associated Press inquired about the missing report, coalition officials said they were correcting the data and would republish the report.

281 Washington failing military, Legion leader says
By Rick Maze - Staff writer
Posted : Tuesday Feb 26, 2013 9:56:36 EST
The head of the nation’s largest veterans’ group said Tuesday that Washington is failing troops and veterans.

Army veteran James Koutz of Boonville, Ind., national commander of the American Legion, criticized politicians for using the defense budget and service members as pawns in a battle over deficit reduction and spending priorities.

He also objected to attempts to increase out-of-pocket Tricare costs for retirees and opposed a recent Pentagon move to create a new medal for drone operators that ranks higher in precedence than some medals awarded to combat troops on the ground.

He made his remarks at a Washington conference of the 2.4-million-member organization, which has more than 13,000 posts around the world.

The Legion’s conference comes during a week when the threat of across-the-board budget cuts is consuming the most attention in Washington. Koutz urged Legionnaires meeting with lawmakers to press for a budget agreement that protects defense and veterans’ programs.

“Let your elected officials know you expect them to work this out,” Koutz said. “This is unacceptable.”

Koutz said he has no problem with a Defense Department plan to create a new Distinguished Warfare Medal for the operators of remotely operated drones. However, the new award should not outrank the Purple Heart or Bronze Star, he said.

On Tricare fees, Koutz said he had a simple message for politicians: “Leave Tricare alone and stop insulting us by taking money away in an attempt to balance the budget.”

Morrissey has had to cancel a slew of concert dates for health reasons. He's probably still sick, but decided to parlay the cancelation into a PR stunt.

I found the most candid article about 'Duck Dynasty' on a Christian newssite. It's from October 2012. (Link in sig) Among the highlights:

- Many of the show's most spiritual scenes end up on the cutting room floor.

- In the first two episodes, the producers censored non-curse words spoken by Willie and Korie to make it appear that they were using profanity. The Robertsons complained because they don't curse.

- The sons used to shave after hunting season, but started keeping the beards as a 'marketing tool'.

- Alan, the non-bearded son who isn't on the show, stepped down from his congreation to help run Duck Commander.

Don't google it.
A long time ago, on another forum I was on, there was a very disturbed young man who thought he was a dragon. Not in the spiritual sense, but in the very real physical sense that he was a fire-breathing lizard inside a human skin bag. He claimed to have felt pain when someone dropped something behind him, while he was sitting on a desk. He said his "tail" felt the blow.
Anyhow, aside from his mental issues, he also drew sketches of himself as a dragon. What made this truly disturbing, because he shared his sketches on the forum, was that in many of his sketches he drew, he was engaged in very hardcore homosexual dragon pr0n. I'm not talking about friendly looking Disney cartoon dragons, but very skilled artwork approaching that of comic books. Except they were doing things far more explicit than just regular 69-ing. Apparently, his "coming out" as a gay dragon prompted someone else on the forum to come out as well, or maybe he was a fellow traveler already on the forum too. I don't remember the details, and I don't care to. He was a very weird person.
Tangentially, he has a connection to Kip Kinkel, the mental kid who shot up his school cafeteria because he heard voices in his head. He was one of the kids who tackled him while Kinkel was trying to clear his jammed weapon.

So I was waiting in the dentist's office lobby a few months ago, and for the hell of it I picked up the WSJ sitting there (haven't read a newspaper in .... years?). Just for fun. To see if it would be any less jaw-dropping than the time I was waiting in the lawyer's lobby a few months earlier, and picked up the local paper, to see no fewer than 4 stories that were beyond belief (all of them head-shakers about CA public agencies scratching for more money, renting lifeguard towers to raise "revenues", and if I recall correctly a stupefying tale of Sacramento "lawmakers" looking to the Facebook IPO and resulting cap-gain taxes to balance the budget).

So there'sastory on TB. So I tell my wife, who's sitting there with me - ooh, check this out, this should be good. Whuh?, she says. I say let's see if they mention illegal immigration on the southern border - the main factor in the reappearance of certain diseases and I believe the main driver of TB - in the story, and if so, where.

Sure enough, way way way down, on the jump page, comes the orwellian reference to "most of the cases occurring near border areas of Texas and California". Ya know, "border areas". Just kinda random, like where meteors happen to strike the Earth, and stuff.

There is no hope, folks. The ignorance, distortion, politicization, hatred, envy, tribalism, corruption, cowardice, gullibility, and stupidity of modern, "educated", "liberal" America has reached the tipping point.

We used to marvel at the ability of the Soviet leadership to keep things on track - barely - without a citizenry that really knew what was going on. In the end, of course, it was the lack of real or trustworthy info that played a big part in rotting and collapsing the system. The leadership had its own books, of course, not to mention its own internal intel system, and survey polls, etc. But it's doubtful even those compensated for a situation where truth was essentially banned. Murray Feshbach had better info on the demographics of the USSR than the Kremlin did.

In our case, due entirely to inertia (prior prosperity, based on real freedom, real markets, real information, some accountability in the public sector, a public service mindset among public servants, etc.), there will be no quick collapse (no "burning" in LIB, sorry). Rather a slow, agonizing, disgusting, infuriating decay, much as we see now. TB in a major city? Mass illiteracy and cheating by the admin in big city school districts? Low-skill public servants like firefighters living semi-wealthy lives while real businessmen struggle to stay afloat? Consulates overrun and ambassadors killed and a yawn from the country/press/Congress and those with leadership responsibility completely untouched?

There is no pendulum, there is no cycle here. CA voters (the "educated" ones) get dumber - literally - with every election cycle. They have not the slightest understanding of the world beyond their immediate experience, and are mindless captives of every idiotic, fashionable, soft fascist, racist, unAmerican canard and meme out there. And they have company in other coastal and eastern states, and big cities. And they now dominate.

If there were another country that really appealed to me - and Brazil has potential and I speak the language - I'd be gone in a shot. But most of them are even worse, and lack the inertial advantage that alone makes most of America even remotely American any more.

John Kerry addressed a town hall meeting
Tuesday in a packed Internet cafe during a nine-country dash through
Europe and the Middle East. The trip is Kerry's first as secretary of
state.
At the town hall, Kerry urged Germans to be tolerant, noting that in America, 'you have a right to be stupid.'

And Johnny exercises that right every day of his life

But...I thought downtown L.A. was the progressive Paradise! Multi-culti, full of alternative lifestyles like drug addicts and criminals, lefty protestors, affordable housing, and living on the dole! What could be better?

BTW I drove by the OWS encampment at City Hall one day and it was totally cleared out. "The bacteria ate it," my friend said.
