Lena Dunham: Let's Save Our Nasty Lookist Attacks for Women Who Aren't Feminists

The twit Twittered:

@lenadunham

Ladies: Anne Hathaway is a feminist and she has amazing teeth. Let's save our bad attitudes for the ones who aren't advancing the cause.

I wrote about it at The Conversation.

Bumped, just because this was posted four minutes before the ONT.

----

I don't know what we do with these comments specifically, but I've had some thoughts on the topic in general that I haven't yet fully put together yet, but will give it a shot to summarize here.

You're right, that rarely do they flat out state it. It may be obvious to us, but they usually don't take it to this point, and so we can often come across as a paranoid nut when we go on and on about what's real. The fact that these guys shape the hearts and minds of those that would rather not think about politics too much.

People will watch their episode of Private Practice (cancelled but something my fiance watched), and see that these Dr's are facing very difficult anecdotal decisions indeed. Should the Dr's let this person die? What kind of life would they really live? To us it's obvious. To some mind of mush, they don't see the politics really.

When we get a media platform, we are eager and we have to make everything IN THEIR FACE. We don't want to risk that the point misses them, because this is our one shot. It doesn't work. You need more subtlety.

At it's core (to me) it's a matter of what you trust less, the government or your neighbor. The media news market that report the flea market and the random acts of kindness more trust their neighbors more. The markets that talk about shooting and stabbings for 15 mins of the news trust the government.

We need shows like a Breaking Bad, but a politician instead of a drug dealer. Party ID is almost secondary. Make him a sympathetic figure you root for at first, and then see him gradually corrupted by the influences around him until you feel he must be stopped and can't see how you ever felt otherwise.

On the positive side, have a show that highlights small businesses that made it big, and make sure to not tread lightly over the times it failed or when it was uncertain.

Anyway, I'm going way too long. But her error is she actually stated what is obvious to us, but isn't always to others. Our problem is usually that because it's all obvious to us, we assume it is to others, and we get obnoxious about it. We should be just subtle enough that the audience thinks they are making meaningful conclusions on their own.

Thanks! Went longer than I realized.

I guess the point is that liberals thrive on the anecdote, and television is a medium of the anecdote. We don't have to connect all the dots for people. We need a foot in the door, and make captivating stories that put the politics in the background. Stories that focus on potential for corruption in government. Stories that highlight the power of individuals to enrich their community.

77 The best thing about Lena Dunham is the fact that she'll be a flash in the pan. TV careers are a rapidly declining asset. They peak and then drop very rapidly. If it weren't for the Obama ad, she'd be just so much trailer trash. She, and many of her ilk have their moment in the sun right now.

But guess what? In a few years, Girls will be cancelled and she'll be knocked up, divorced, and 40 lbs heavier. Just like many Hollywenches before her. Only then she might realize she was just a tool in 2012.

Her darts met above her nips. I have never seen or heard of "dart shadows." The fact that Hathaway is known to attend award shows braless and in see through clothes, thereby making her boobs fully visible is also informative. Maybe, she was lactating? It is more plausible than dart shadows.

It is!

Let's try that again in actual English. I stood up and both my ankles more or less froze up. I destroyed them both from cheering and it's a cold, nasty rainy day which makes that pesky bone on bone thing I've got going on flare up. It's making walking a joy and a half, let me tell you. Stupid beta meat sack.

110 I can't get over what a random, bizarre compliment "amazing teeth" is. Teeth are about the most obvious indicators of class in the world; they aren't so much about being pretty as they show that your parents took care of you. And theyr also pretty darn likely to be fake to some degree.

Did she have thunder thighs with cellulite the consistency of cottage cheese? If so, yep, that was Dunham.

In real life, if a loser with daddy issues and hip joints so loose they'll literally spread for anything mildly phallic can get successful guys to even give her the time of day, then dammit, I'm in the wrong profession.

...oh, forget it. I can't make heads or tails of it anymore...

Posted by: Brother Cavil and his Ampersandsaurus at February 26, 2013 11:24 AM (GBXon)

122 I still don't get Lena's comment. What a strange thing to say?

Regarding Lena my Nana said it best nearly 40 years ago.

Back in the 1970s when more "realistic" looking people were beginning to be cast in commercials I recall my grandmother commenting,"Why would I went to look at ugly people on TV or buy what they are selling?" That certainly applies to Lena.

Posted by: Long Island at February 26, 2013 11:24 AM (hl8SI)

123 BTW, what "cause" is she talking about? What, the "cause" to be able to have sex as often as you want with whoever you want without fear of repercussions, consequences, or judgement? Because I'm pretty sure that ship has sailed and already made port, probably in Lena Dunham's own vag.
Guess, what, bitch -- you have what you and your ilk always wanted. Don't blame ME for the fact that it didn't make you a sparkling sunbeam of happiness like you thought it would.

Stupid whore.

Posted by: Tina at February 26, 2013 11:33 AM (agmR/)

126 The irony is that you know that dumpy Lena wasn't a member of the Kul Gurlz tribe and was no doubt a nerdy or weirdo outcast

But thanks to connections by her parents, she gets a tv show with prefabricated buzz, and now all of a sudden she's the head of the Kul Gurlz tribe that wants to bully the outcasts, the others

It's a short time at the top, especially those with no talent. She no doubt thinks she'll never drop to the sub-D list where even Kathy Griffin isn't replying to her tweets or returning her calls

Posted by: kbdabear at February 26, 2013 11:55 AM (mCvL4)

127 For these people the world is divided into two - feminists and anti-feminists. Feminism (or, whatever they mean by it at the moment) is seen to be so self-evident and comprehensive that you either wholeheartedly embrace it, or by not embracing it you are an obstacle to the implementation of its ideals to be dealt with.

That is how it is taught to them in their womyn's studies courses, and it is what they believe and practice, while preening that they're "open minded."

okay, who the fuck is Lena Dunham? should I know this?

Posted by: Peaches at February 25, 2013 10:32 PM

Lena is the star and head writer of a show on HBO called "Girls". It's supposed to be the cutting edge of the juiceboxer women's zeitgeist.

It's one of those shows that seems like a lot of people talk about but not a lot of people actually watch

Posted by: kbdabear at February 26, 2013 12:04 PM (mCvL4)
