As a South Jersian (living at the foot of the Seaside Bridge - thanx Sandy), I can tell you gun sales here have been outta sight for six months at least. My local gun shop had a wall of ARs (at least 50) just six months ago. Last month I dropped in and there were NO long guns of any type.
Plenty of handguns, prices stable, but ammo only for range members/users or gun buyers. I've had several neighbors ask me to sell them one of my guns. Not happening. I always kept my ammo stocked up so I'm OK there. There are no military type long guns of any breed, historical or otherwise, within 100 miles of me. People believe war is coming. - "MSNBC, 'Almost A Bona Fide Organ Of State Propaganda'"
True, but they don't have an actual audience. Network shows that get cancelled after their maiden episodes draw 5x or more the number of viewers. There are far bigger fish to fry. - "America's Ph.D Bust" Definitely. The academe no longer is a growth industry. Public money schools are dealing with budget calamities. Private schools already are staffed to the rafters. - "Sequestration And The Coming Depression" Let's not walk by the giant neon elephants in the room. Our economy is on an express elevator ride to oblivion because for decades taxes have been too high, regulations have been to broad and the government has been too big and has engaged in excessive spending. Then in the final analysis it'll be the entitlement programs that'll put the final nails in the coffin. Outside the coffee klatches and sewing circles of the chattering classes politics has severe real world consequences. Posted by: Tsar Nicholas II at February 25, 2013 10:03 AM (r2PLg) 89

So a big gun-range in Dallas caught fire over the weekend when some douche-nozzle was firing tracer rounds and one somehow got caught in a wall. The FD couldn't really fight the fire because Live Ammunition and Fire Do Not Mix.
My question- did the range have rules against firing tracers (the one I use does)? If not, why not? If so, do they have grounds to sue the jackass who burned their building to the ground? Follow-up to that second one- if they do have grounds to sue, might their Insurance compel them to do so, rather than just paying the claim? I don't think those things have improved the putt stats much, if at all.
----- The dudes on Golf Channel this morning were saying that there are stats to support that it gives an advantage, although that was not the rationale the USGA used in their decision to consider the ban. I realize the PGA is trying to show support for the younger players, who I think are more inclined to use the anchored putters, but I have a feeling it won't matter in the USGA's decision. If he didn't have anything other than donkey shit for brains, I'd have pointed out the JEF has hired nothing BUT big bankers--Lew, Geitner, etc. Instead, take it as a cautionary tale, friends: You are not even capable of comprehending the level of cognitive dissonance the left is capable of maintaining. Wouldn't work. Unlike Conservatives, Liberals LOVE their politicians and want them in their lives as much as possible. My retired Father watches nothing but MSNBC all day long, and is on a first-name basis with "Barack".
When discussing politics, it's not "President Obama will show those damned Republicans!" It's "Barack's gonna get them damned Republicans this time!" Annoying as hell. 100 If conservatives were smart (which we aren't... politically, at least), we would make fun of the Obamas showing up everywhere. Contrast them with Republicans who shut up and go away after their day in the spotlight is over.
Posted by: AllenG (Dedicated Tenther) Channelling Breitbart at February 25, 2013 10:12 AM (xN73L) You have to use ammo purchased at that range. Couldn't find any restrictions that tracers weren't allowed. But they also don't reference it in their products section, just ball and self defense rounds. So did an employee sell the tracer rounds or did the shooter bring it in unknown to the employees. So, what did I miss on the Doom thread comments? By the time I got up it was already squooshed so I came directly here. Doomy post, tho!
Drought-plagued months of piled-up brush finally got torched yesterday, on the one mild, sunny day between last week's ice storm and today's rain. Rather than carve a hole in the semi-frozen sod, as we have for so many dear old pets, instead, we placed old Buck in his fruit-box coffin on top of the oak, pine, and Christmas trees. We watched as flames reached his box, then, while we were distracted stamping out some burning grass, the box vanished. My mind says hot fire did the job. My heart says angels took him while we were distracted. Smoldering ashheap. Smoke rises through falling cold drizzle. Part of our heart departed. You could point this out as well - In the report, GAI details how the George W. Bush and Bill Clinton administrations both actually took down financial criminals — unlike the Obama administration. Between 2002 and 2008, for instance, GAI points out how a Bush administration task force “obtained over 1,300 corporate fraud convictions, including those of over 130 corporate vice presidents and over 200 CEOs and corporate presidents.” “Clinton’s DOJ prosecuted over 1,800 S&L [savings and loans] executives, senior officials, and directors, and over 1,000 of them were sent to jail,” GAI adds. But, despite having “promised more of the same,” especially in the wake of the 2008 financial crisis, the Obama administration’s DOJ has not brought criminal charges against a single major Wall Street executive. I feel sorta silly about this in that I am only a PGA Tour fan and not an actual golfer, but I hope the USGA gets rid of the anchored putters. They really don't seem to be in the spirit of the rules.
Posted by: Y-not at February 25, 2013 09:44 AM (5H6zj) I'm a golfer that doesn't use an anchored putter and I think its silly that the argument is that it is not in the spirit of the game. No offense because its not only you that say this but a number of all time greats too. The 'spirit of the game' was to hit the ball with the head of the stick. It didn't care how you did it. Because there was an optimal way to do it, it basically came down to just one way everyoneeventually did it. If you want to anchor your driver by all means do it. It will be a disadvantage. Stats also show that an anchored putter holds no advantage. And anchoringalso has been a legalpart of the game for over 80 years in one form or another. If it held any significant advantage you could be assured that everyone would have gone to it. I'm glad the PGA is opposing the ban. Posted by: polynikes at February 25, 2013 11:02 AM (m2CN7) 162

It's surprising to me simply because the Oscars are so politicized, and JL doesn't fit the mold. She's anti-Hollywood in a lot of ways, (planning to move from H'wood and just work there) she's famous for her "Screw PETA" quote (I love her just for THAT!) she's pro-gun and she starred in The Hunger Games. Now, JL may be a lib for all I know, but in the highly-politicized world of the Oscars, having starred in an anti-Big Government film should have disqualified for life, or at least until she rehabilitates herself by making a good little propaganda film that pleases the Regime. Don't know how or why they let Lawrence get the win, but I'm glad she won. Posted by: BlueStateRebel at February 25, 2013 11:12 AM (7ObY1) 183

Monday is a good day to poke the hornet's nest.
Concerning sequestration, defense cuts and the like... Part of the cuts should be closing West Point, the Naval Academy and the Air Force Academy. These are antiquated institutions that perpetuatea culture ofisolation between the services which needs to be eliminated, along with 90% of the field grade officers who won't be able to accept the change. While we're at it, the "intellegence" services need a complete housecleaning. When is the last time they were right about anything? We need the strongest, most effective military and intellegence agencies in the world. Sometimes you need to stop what you're doing and go back to square one to accomplish the goal. Heh. Nice articleon Baretta..... they should move south.... looks like Arizona already has Ruger and a couple other gun manufacturers..... if I was in charge of Baretta I'd take it to TexasI guess.... gotta start thinking long term here people.... can't have too many gun manufacturers in the same state....gotta spread it around a bit in the "red" states that love 'em some guns. The rest of the gun manufacturers in New England should start making plans to move as well.... it's only a matter of time before the "blue" states hike the taxes on guns and ammo and/or ban 'em..... get while the gettins good... those "blue" states might get mad and ban 'em right away but, so what, there are more than enough people looking to buy guns and ammo in the rest of the states right now.... it's a sellers market and the gun manufacturers will do fine even if the "blue" states cancel orders for their swat teams and such.... screw 'em... someone will buy those guns right now somewhere else... Woke up this morning feeling like I'd been hit with a sackful of hammers, thanks to a stupid cold that refuses to go away. Glanced out the window to see that the roads were still white and barely plowed. Gave up the ghost and called in sick. So here I be. There was a study on this back in the old days, about who made a better officer - someone just out of the academy or someone who spent time as enlisted and came through OCS - I don't remember the outcome. There was lots of pushback when there was a big RIF (reduction in force) and captains ended up as staff sargents. Good arguments to be made on both sides. AlextheChick, 1TB or 2TB external?
Or build a mini-RAID box of cheap drives to USB into your regular system? Posted by: Anna Puma (+SmuD) at February 25, 2013 11:45 AM (2HjDP) I'm torn. I really should set up a mini-RAID box but that's all efforty and effort is bad. I'm thinking two 1 TBs for separate desktop and laptop backups because I have met me and I know damn well that partitioning out a 2 TB won't work because I'll forget which partition is for which backup, yes, even when it's labeled. I'm snowflakey like that. Posted by: alexthechick - Chaotic Evil Hobbit. at February 25, 2013 11:48 AM (VtjlW) 270
259 - You're kinda missing the point of the argument. Frankly, I DO think IDs for ammo is not a bad idea, it's the fact that they can commit fraud at will in elections that is so gauling. The LIV's call it "disenfranchisement," without having a clue what the word means. Posted by: BurtTC at February 25, 2013 11:49 AM (TOk1P) 271
124 Well, 5 minutes into Batman: Under the Red Hood and Robin's already dead. Damned multiple Robins.
---------- I'm really looking forward to the Bat Squad! TV show in which the special guest Robin is always killed off before the opening credits. Posted by: Attack Citizen Anachronda at February 25, 2013 11:50 AM (NmR1a) Posted by: RWC at February 25, 2013 11:51 AM (fWAjv) 273

There was lots of pushback when there was a big RIF (reduction in force) and captains ended up as staff sargents. Good arguments to be made on both sides.
Posted by: jwest at February 25, 2013 11:43 AM (ZDsRL) Post WW2 RIF? Key there is it was downward move, which is always bad, if done in the same organization. Used to be that they had to have a seperate Officer class, fromt the edumacated, because they were the only ones who could run logistics, and... read maps... Now? with todays College Grads? there is very little Military benefit to the education they get in College.... and it would be a huge benefit to those on the Line, to know that those in Charge... actualy knew what the hell they did for a living. Any change to the current institutions should be made with added emphasis on the NCOs. We all know they are the core of the services. It'd have been nice to see how the IAF progressed in this respect. Now, I imagine they will regress into their former incompetence. Shame, they could have developed into a formidable force, given their teachers. Posted by: irongrampa at February 25, 2013 11:52 AM (SAMxH) 278
OT why are they now taking BP with eye exam? The tech didnt really know how to do it, the cuff was too tight, my fingers were going numb. And it actually hurt. I took the cuff off and said I am not doing that. He seemed stunned

>>if you could live for 500 years, what would you go back and change in the time you've already lives?
LOL. That's a dumb one. Thankfully, I never had anyone ask me something like that or "the man born in Boston but isn't a US citizen" type of "logic" questions. Posted by: Mama AJ at February 25, 2013 11:52 AM (SUKHu) 280

Posted by: alexthechick - Chaotic Evil Hobbit. at February 25, 2013 11:52 AM (VtjlW) Apparently so. "The photo has sparked widespread discussion about whether it’s real or Photoshopped. But it seems we can probably drop the “alleged” in front of our description of the photo." Posted by: RWC at February 25, 2013 11:58 AM (fWAjv) 286

Posted by: Romeo13 at February 25, 2013 11:52 AM (lZBBB) I'm all for a separate officer class. The military isn't some democracy, so it needs a more feudal system. Without the certainty that good men are going to die because of the stupidity and inexperience of their leaders, our whole military system would collapse. Moron-standard interview questions?
Crossbow or longbow? That kind of interview question won't comply with NLRB requirements. Of course, the NLRB itself doesn't comply with teh Constitution (on dead tree). Posted by: Big Fat Meanie at February 25, 2013 11:59 AM (Ec6wH) Posted by: speedster1 at February 25, 2013 12:00 PM (yeM7r) 290

----- I dont mean to jump in your shit..... but Im gonna jump in your shit. There are already age requirements for ammo purchases. ID for ammo purchases is NOT whats currently on the grabbers radar.
