The Worst Oscars Ceremony Ever

Seems to have been in 1989 with an opening act by Snow White and Rob Lowe.

There are dancing "stars" (literally), a recreation of the Coconut Grove (with Merv Griffin singing "Ive Got a Lovely Bunch of Coconuts"--get it?) and Hollywood icons such as Vincent Price and Roy Rogers thrown into the middle of this clusterfuck. Then Rob Lowe joins Snow on-stage as her blind date to butcher "Proud Mary" set to alternate lyrics (it's the Lowe and Snow Show - ha!)

...How bad was it? So bad that several stars including Paul Newman, Gregory Peck and Julie Andrews signed an open letter the next day calling the awards show "an embarrassment to both the Academy and the entire motion picture industry."

Yeah they were for additional first aid because normal first aid stuff was mentioned as standard equipment for the bug out bag, as well as being able to use them as extra padding in your feet. Dental floss because it can be used for stitching wounds, and winding it together as fishing line. And condoms because it can hold 2 liters of water or be used to keep other stuff dry.

Oh and you first on taking a drink from the condom canteen.

Spielberg is involved, which doesn't really help in telling whether it's any good, like with his movies, some good, some awful. I look at the reviews, and they tell me it's either crap or really good. No help there. Any moron perspective? Running out of Justified, Dexter, Walking Dead episodes. Not sure about Breaking Bad (any heroes in that one?). So need something to watch.

Tell him to be careful with that. They did something similar with my wife when she had her second c-section. Couple days after we got home, incision partially re-opened. She ended up with a staph infection.

Dermabond is actually superglue. I have begun using superglue (formulated for fake nails) in first aid applications. I figure it has fewer ingredients that may be bad for skin than the hardware store type. I no longer use that paint-on Skin Shield stuff.

Well, I am sorry you lost someone to smoking, but my father died from a stroke, never smoked, but suffered for years.And my sister died in a car wreck at 32, and yeah, we suffered repercussions..

My SIL is having a much harder time with this deployment of my BIL than in the past I think. Having to go through childbirth with your spouse on Skype from Shitcanistan can't be any fun.

I dunno. I just recently went back to Mississippi to visit dear old mom and many of the rural areas I used to trudge around in have sharply depopulated just in the past 25 years. The places she and her parents grew up have actually completely depopulated. Nothing left but cemeteries, collapsed woodframe houses and open fields.

I'll probably get my ass kicked for saying this, but El Paso isn't bad at all. It's Texas, barely. It's also not humid, and the cost of living is cheap.

The peninsula is full of faboo restaurants, but venture off the tourist route and go to The Glass Onion on Savannah Hwy South. If you stay on the peninsula, try Martha Lou's Kitchen on Morrison Dr. for lunch. That's some damn good southern cooking. No bells and whistles -she doesn't need 'em. Also, McCrady's. I'm usually not a fan of hotel restaurants, but try Charleston Grill, esp. their "Lush" menu.

Yes, there are a lot of things that are getting me down, and this weekend brought two more challenges. I'm not handling the stress very well, I'm afraid. My prayers are mostly obsessing and complaint sessions.

My healthy-living father suddenly passed away from lung cancer last fall. Mom did a radon test in the house, found it was somewhat elevated, and when her doctor heard, the doctor ordered lung x-rays for my mom. She has cancer in her lungs as well, and it has spread to her lymph system. She's undergoing chemo and radiation. Doctor say she will probably get two or three good-quality years out of the treatment. I'm not ready to lose my mom too.

My dear, sweet brother and his dear, sweet family have been going lefty. It seems to be interfering with their spiritual lives -- they can't find a church that is sufficiently reverential of The Won. So they're drifting away from their faith. I feel like I'm kind of losing them as well.

The gun grabbing worries me because I know what usually comes next in history -- the mass executions. I belong to a group (conservatives) that has been vilified constantly, so I'm wondering whether things are really that serious and do we need to bug out, when, and where should we go.

So losing a water heater and a stove in one weekend was just the icing on the cake.

Dang, I think I just hosted a pity party.

Disenfranchisement is a tool of tyranny - you remove people's ability to control or influence their government, use that system against them, their stake is removed. Non-stakeholders need have no loyalty to the system, chaos, crackdowns, violence, destruction, tyranny.

If that doesn't matter to you, if the corruption of the very process of representation through which this government draws its legitimacy is an irrelevant detail... it boggles the mind.

And one party has worked very hard to make enforcement of laws regarding that representation very hard - and that, also, should be a huge problem for everyone. It isn't because some people are complicit and others are cowed.

Any of the smaller towns in the Texas Hill country. Like Marble Falls, Burnett, Frederickburg, Blanco, Liberty Hill, etc.
You're not too far from a larger city but still have lots of space and freedom. Put a few horses or cows or goats, etc. on the property and you'll get exemptions for livestock/ranching/farming and you're property taxes will stay relatively low. There are still areas to get decent tracts for no too much money. Find an agent that specializes in land. Just went to a friends place who bought 28 acres and is totally off the grid. Well water, solar, propane, and wind. Does "organic farming" for tax purposes. Nice set up. If we didn't have kids we'd do the same thing. Satellite Internet is able to stream HD video too.

Yeah, it is kind of liberal, at least compared to much of the rest of Texas. And yes, it's very low crime for a city of its size. It's also about 12 hours at most from a Denver, Beaumont (I know, I've made the trek) and Phoenix, so you have a lot of options for places to visit over a long weekend.

The Lenovo comes with 8 extra GB of RAM, and more memory on the video card - but the card isn't rated very highly - NVIDIA Geforce GT 620 2GB

Still, 16 GB of memory for less then $900 for the whole system seems pretty good.

I don't generally run first person shooters, but I do run some other games that have a more moderate need - I'll probably pick up Civ5 and the new X Com with the new computer for example.

Also, watched Netflix's series House of Cards last night - turned it off after 10 minutes. Bad writing, boring and if there is any redeeming quality to this series I certainly missed it.

1) the advice I read on El Paso is correct

2) I would suggest you take her on a field trip down I-35 and return home via US I-10 to US 171 in Lake Charles to Shreveport via 171 to Texarkana to US I-30 to US I-40 to US I-55 to home if able that way you get access to the good parts of the area called the ArkLaTex.

3) if still inclined fly to San Antonio the follow I-10 to El Paso in a rental the take US Hwy 54 up into New Mexico when last I lived there there was a great steakhouse at the bowen Ranch....check out Alamagordo, and Cloudcroft.

3a) if you want geography near enough to home to almost fool you the NE corner of Texas between Killeen, Waco and Shreveport Louisiana is the way to go.

OSP, at the moment, FL has an almost identical tax system as Texas....no state income tax, 6% sales tax, reasonable property taxes, and no tax on military retirement.

There is a difference in *consequences* between bad math and greed on the one side, and a corrupt government in revolt against the people on the other.

The former may be corrected, not easily, but without catastrophe. Long, hard slog. The latter... not so much.

Just imagine a scenario of economic collapse and *then* it comes out that the government stole the power and used it against the people. At that point, you have 100 million armed people with literally nothing left to lose.

There's no going back from that. Nobody sane wants to go there.

Both scenarios are bad, but can you really not see a difference?

300W is borderline for a business desktop. All too often when a client wanted to get a really big monitor that needed better video (or a connector with adequate bandwidth) I've been limited int he choice due to the need to use a card that had not additional power needs. The stock PSU would lack both the wattage and the spare connector.

Even though I'm not a big PC gamer, if I'm building a new machine I won't bother with anything less than 450W, unless it is a specialty low-power system like an HTPC and might even have an external PSU. You want a bit of ceiling in case your calculations for max power consumption are a bit off and just for general safety. There isn't much penalty for having more capacity than you ever need, other than a one-time cost.

Alternatively, make sure the PSU isn't something with proprietary connections to the motherboard. Dell and other OEMs used to do this with many models and it meant you couldn't use an off the shelf upgrade. As long as they stick to the standards you can wait until you actually need more juice and factor it as part of the cost.

If you get on the phone or online chat with the PC maker and say you want to have the capacity for a serious gaming card later, they may offer you stuff that doesn't appear on the web site. Why they make you ask for it has always been a mystery to me. It may be that they fear overwhelming the customer with too much information. You might also check for models are branded differently but are actually the same company. Just geared more toward the more demanding customer.

Bring back "Federal" style apportionment of state Senates. You give each county a state Senator, regardless of population.

Nevada would have a 16-1 state Senate. Even California would have a GOP majority state Senate. Both used to have that system before the Warren court got all pissy about it.

I'm actually on the far SW side of Austin which is the edge of the Hill Country. I grew up in San Antonio but moved to the Austin area round 12 years ago. As long as you stay away from the more urban areas Austin isn't too bad. Lots of nice places to live. We have three kids six and under so it isn't practical to live too far out right now. Before kids we actually had some land in Salado but I didn't want to be 30-45 minutes away from milk and diapers with babies so we sold before we actually built a house there. Now we are far enough out it doesn't feel like Austin but close enough that we still have all the perks of the big city.

It gets technical, can't be helped. For gaming the first thing to know is the amperage on the 12V rail (Computer PSUs deliver power at multiple voltages and it can't really be moved from one to another - you can't put all the power into one voltage, so you're limited to part of what they list).

Add to that the OEM power supplies being cheap, lightweight, and overrated. I would not run a gaming PC off a big-maker OEM PSU at all.

If you search for computer power supply tests and reviews online you will find out which brands are good or not, it's been a few years so I'm not up on whether there have been changes.

I am willing to spend a little more on the PSU because a cheap one can not just fail but take other components with it (usually they just die, though).

The wattage is not everything, I have 650 and 500 watt PSUs with the same amperage on the 12V rail. The 500 is underrated, though, it can really pull more than that.

Antec, PC Power and Cooling, Coolermaster, Raidmax, Corsair, OCZ and Seasonic are good, I'd put OCZ, Coolermaster and Raidmax at the bottom of the top if you will. I haven't had an antec in a while.

You can probably run any single video card configuration off a 650 from any of those, 750 would be a little overkill, any more a lot. 500 would be dicey unless, again, the specs were underrated.

When you hold the OEM supply and an aftermarket in your hands you will start to understand why the OEMs fail so much, they weight half as much or less because they skimp on heatsinks and components.

A good 650 may be as little as $60, but if you're not a geek it may be intimidating putting it in (and some Dell and other cases don't have room, need to check that.

Dell may install an XPS power supply for you, which are *usually* from a better manufacturer than their generics.

I would build a PC with a 460, just not a gaming PC. And not a lightweight OEM one unless I was really strapped.

When the 17th was passed, there wasn't a huge change in membership of the Senate. Many states were already holding elections and just having the state legislatures validate the results.

Personally, I'd like the Gov. and Lt. Gov. of each state to serve in the U.S. Senate.

The BH's father was middle-management at Philip-Morris, in NYC. In the 60s, they'd have girls go through the offices every day handing out packs of cigs. He died of what you'd expect -- and one of they post-death benefits was that they'd ship two cartons a month to his widow. It used to be such a very different world.




And, frighteningly, a lot of that has been airbrushed away. The Statist control machine has made it so that young people cannot imagine being a smoker -- they are "THE OTHER".




I remember, though. And I'm with you. You know the f'in' drill, and if you had to do it all over again with what you know today, maybe you wouldn't have ever started....but it's got its good points, too. And -- though I might shift upwind or stand a bit farther away -- you are the person to choose, and only you.

Ms. Trainer went thru 6 week cycles...Normal, Hooker, Nun, and Mrs. Clean. Eventually after 2 years she settled on Normal. I really liked Hooker.

You wouldn't believe the behavior she exhibited without realizing it was weird.
