2 Good Morning Morons. Today is Sunday, February 24, 2013. On this day in 1582 Pope Gregory XIII introduced the Gregorian calendar via Papal Bull. This calendar was needed to correct errors in the Julian calendar (Julius Caesar 46 BC), which had caused the Spring Equinox to move forward to March 11. Great Britain (and the US colonies) did not adopt this calendar until 1752.

4 Fox/AP article detailing how Bloomberg has started spending on the pro-gun control candidates. See if you can tell which way the article slants. The gun grabbers are plowing full steam ahead. And with Republicans getting ready to sell us out in the Senate (see below) they may get some ground as they steadily whittle away at the Constitution.

With a headline like that I didn’t even bother to read the article. The stupid liberal PR rags attack the Republicans constantly, actively campaign for the Democraps, and then say the GOP has a PR problem.

11 The most liberal Senators according to the “DC Insider Rag” National Journal.

The ratings were done via a complicated process by which the Senators were compared to each other. Not the simple rating like ACU uses on how they voted on select bills. I am not sure I trust a system like this. The ACU method has its problems but it is probably better than this.

On the upside, you should read all the comments from Democrats saying that it's a personal matter, and doesn't effect his performance as a Councilman.

Republicans are tearing him up about personal responsibility.

I seem to remember a lot of shrieking about "Poll Taxes" and "Jim Crow" being used to argue against showing ID at the polls but imposing a fee on another right is just fine with them. There is a special election primary this Tuesday with about a dozen Democrats running for Jesse Jr's seat. One of the few white candidates is Debbie Halvorson who has an A rating with NRA. Bloomberg's group is backing Kelly and he's already poured millions into this race.

I really hope Kelly loses to Halvorson. Because, if Bloomberg is successful it portends a really rough bunch of races in 2014.

56 Regarding the GOP, I am going to repost in its entirety a comment made by Subotai Bahadur at Belmont Club the other day. I hope he doesn't mind. I regard him as one of the best blog commenters around. First off, here is a link to the thread:

http://tinyurl.com/aw5abup

Now his comment:

Codavilla is probably going to wake up with a horse's head on a pillow next to him soon. And the fingerprints are going to those of the Institutional Republicans. His original essay reinforced my convictions on the difference between his Ruling Party [which I call Institutional Republicans] and what he refers to as the Country Party [which I have called the Conservative/TEA Party/Patriot Movement].

He has it right. I have seen the Institutionals in Colorado actively work to elect Democrats when the Conservative/TEA Party/Patriot Movement managed to follow the rules and duly nominate one of their own. We have two Democrat US Senators, and a Democrat Governor based on that; and they have tried to rig the game to remove a multiple term Conservative Congressman who sits on a key committee for the state and replace him with a candidate who literally said that he looked forward to reaching across the aisle and working with the [then] Democrat majority.

Codavilla states in his latest piece that 2/3 of the country has no representation in the government at all, and that is not a stable situation. It is not. I have been calling for the rise of a SECOND Party since January 1. Not that I expect the new party to win elections due to the fact that the electoral process is corrupted by both widespread fraud and the Vichyite collaboration by the Institutionals. But rather to form an ideological rallying point akin to the Sons of Liberty. The Sons never formed an American government. But their existence as an organized political force was vital to what happened in Philadelphia in 1787.

A government and ruling class so tied to the interests of such a small proportion of the people, and fervently opposed to the interests of the majority cannot be considered as legitimate. And it is not capable of reform, both for the reasons cited above, and because of the nature of how one joins the ranks of the elites.

Even serial Obama supporter columnist Megan McArdle has taken note in print of the incestuous and self-referential nature of how one rises to power:

http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2013/02/21/america-s-new-mandarins.html

although I doubt that she recognizes herself as being in that mandarinate.

We have had two periods before, when significant portions of the population did not believe that the government power over their lives was legitimate. The first was the period from 1765 to 1776. I commend to your attention the book by Pauline Maier, "From Resistance to Revolution" discussing the dynamics. The outcome was not a peaceful revolution.

The second was the period from 1850 or so to 1861. I do not doubt the racial component of the Civil War. But it was not the be-all and end-all of the motivations. Slavery was the key Agit-Prop of the day, but the argument over slave -v- free states was also a proxy for who had the majority to control government finances, when most Federal revenue came from the South. And there were vast differences in the views of the role of the Federal government.

The New England States, who themselves threatened to secede from the Union in 1815 [see Hartford Convention], viewing the Constitutionally created Federal government as the employee and agent of the several states [the common view nationwide]; became convinced that the Federal government was the master of the states. The South retained the old conception.

While holding no brief or affection for slavery [and noting that it was the DEMOCRATS who made up the government of the Confederacy and who supported slavery], I can understand the response of the South to the election of 1860.

People look to the election of Lincoln as president as the key outcome. I differ. Look some time at the Congressional results. There were various reasons for the outcome, but in the end the Republican Party and a few smaller, more radically anti-Southern parties held THREE QUARTERS of the seats in each House of Congress.

The South had no power under the Constitution to stop, delay, or create any legislation at all. Despite the placatory words of Lincoln, they had every rational expectation that Congress would impose a form of legal subjugation of the South and that the Constitution would not prevent it. So they seceded.

They had, rationally, lost faith in the legitimacy of a system that would not only not represent their interests in any way, but would also openly wage war on them through the mechanism of government. The previous decade had convinced them that they were no longer the countrymen of those who ruled, who only considered Southerners as less than human subjects.

That is much abbreviated, but I think that one can see parallels to current events.

And we are going to have to see where the point is, and in what numbers, that individuals will decide that a government and political class that oppresses them outside the bounds of the Constitution is in fact not legitimate. And to what level their resistance to oppression will reach.

Thomas Paine put the feelings of the times of the Revolution into words that could be understood by the common man. After our Revolution, he went to France, where after their Revolution he penned what became the failed attempt at creating a real Bill of Rights for France. It was titled, "The Declaration of the Rights of Man and the Citizen". I have always been partial to the phrasing of the equivalent of our Second Amendment. It is called, "The Right of Resistance to Oppression".

65 The "PR problem" is simply the GOP being a bunch of pussies. There's no reason GOPers on TV couldn't begin every answer on the talk shows with a mention that [whatever the problem at hand is goes here, say, sequestration in this example] starts and ends with Obama's lack of leadership but that the MSM is lying about en masses it because they're really nothing more than a bunch of prostitutes for the Democratic Party.

"Prostitutes?" shocked anchors will ask, "isn't that a little strong?"

"Why no, Brian/Katie/Bill/Chris/etc., it isn't ... the MSM has always been a left wing clown circus that cheered on the Democrats ... around 2004 they moved into the activist stage and basically became the communication organ for the Dems, and now they've completely whored out their credibility in exchange for access to members of the party they want to win, really nothing more than prostitutes just like I said. Anyway, about sequestration ...."

It would take no more than thirty seconds of each show.

72 #59 jj I first visited London in 1968. It was a quiet, elegant city where you could walk into Westinster Abbey and stroll around looking at the tombs and inscriptions with no supervision whatsoever.

With raising a family and the responsibilities it entailed, I did not return to London until 2010. I was shocked beyond words. Whole sections of Mayfair are filled with Arab oil millionaires. I accidentally walked into a square out near the Victoria and Albert Museum which had Iranian men with expensive cars gathered in the street, giving me the stink eye as I walked past them (the only time I felt in danger ). The shops cater to those who are vastly wealthy, with jewelry I had never seen (like a diamond mesh bracelet priced at half a million dollars).

I was completely dumbfounded.

80 77 Certainly understand the challenges of booting Ron Paul and his Luddites. But think of trying to get Rove, the 'consultants', McCain, Graham, Boehner, etc. out. And what brand baggage would you rather carry: the disfunctional GOP? Or the Libertarian wackiness? Or is there another alternative?

82 Well, it seems to me that the adolescent nature of the electorate makes them quite unlikely to go for conservative values, much like teenagers don't like to be given a curfew. Our current crop of voters seem to be concerned with looks, pop culture, and not much else.

So I am sort of questioning whether we have a way we can win, absent a complete collapse. We can huff and puff about being sold out or whatever, but the fact is that we have too many voters who don't know anything about economics, the Constitution, or basic common sense.

To me, all of this "I am done with the GOP" stuff is fine, but it still leaves you with Obama in charge, not only right now but of the next presidential candidate as well. I am looking for one of twothings: either a way to win, or if we cannot win, a way to inflict maximum damage on the democrat brand.

The welfare state does seem to attract muslims throughout Europe.

I have heard about London's muslim problem. Was really hoping the Irish would see what happened there and not repeat the same mistake. Guess not. Maybe I can get my kids over there before the land of their ancestors disappears.

LIB is what is going to happen if things continue the way they are. It MIGHT force a restart on the entire mess in DC. OR it might end up with the collapse of cities, anarchy in the countryside, and perhaps even a land invasion by the Chinese, coming to confiscate their collateral.

Sorry, but I just cannot abandon the idea that we should be able to overcome this.

So why do we even have a Republican Party?

Two choices:
1. Completely gut GOP, and start over.
2. Third party (likely Libertarian) and kick out Ron Paul.

Option 2 seems to be easier and more plausible

The Left has infiltrated the Republican party through stealth. Operatives, faux Repuplicans ala Brooks and Frum, bribes(Akin, just speculating),turning Republicans against the Tea Party(which was their only hope)etc.

We absolutely need to use their tactics and rip apart their base. How, is the perplexing part. If Conservatives are serious, they need to be untruthful and run as a Democrat and vote conservatively. Become media savvy and when called on their voting record, remark similarly to what the liars on the left do regularly. Many people who are conservative vote D everytime. It is who they think are the GOOD guys. Time to take that vote, Republicans.

Posted by: MidwesternSceptic at February 24, 2013 09:52 AM (cxl8k)

138 I have come to believe that it would take a societal and economic collapse to change the behavior of the electorate, and the behavior of the politicians they elect.

Until then, we will have Honey Boo Boo and other forms of bread and circuses, the Permanent Campaign of Barack Obama, the installation of his successor by the MFM, the reduction of all opposition to rodeo clown status, while the creeping numbness of statism envelops us like a heavy dose of painkillers.

That's so cute. You think the collapse of Social Security is a choice. Unless you're expecting to start collecting within this decade it simply isn't going to exist by the time you get there. All the money taken out of your paycheck is taxes, pure and simple.

I recall when I first heard the idea of a Social Security collapse it was something way out there past the expected lifespan of any living voter. Something like the year 2089. Then it became 2067, then got revised to a bit earlier, and again, and so on. At some point soon they'll finally admit it already happened and stop pretending it is anything other than an entitlement. The withdrawal holiday was a big step in that direction.

163 What's coming isn't revolution. Its going to be a real civil war.

I really doubt it. If condition become intolerable and the states are unable to assert themselves, it won't be a standup fight. The federals have the military and I expect that they would be willing to try and use them. I have no intention of trying to hold the field against artillery and airpower. It will be resistance rather than revolt. And resistance is just straight up murder of the cogs of the machine since the leaders are too protected.

I do not prescribe or desire this, I merely predict it, with regret.

Alas Babylon.

What we have now is different. There is no North and South. But whoever wins gets the whole enchilada, for better or worse.

Posted by: AZ Hi Desert at February 24, 2013 10:00 AM (/N0b9)

That's right. This time it will be neighbor vs. neighbor, which is the way most civil wars go. The 1861-1865 war was an aberration.

We know the cities will go one way and rural areas the other. The suburbs are anybody's guess. Which means that I could find myself on the front lines. Not a pleasant prospect.

#1 is actually the easier and most likely to succeed. You will never get the social conservatives to support the free weed/free sex party, especially since that party, by and large, has no moral compass, basis or motivation.

Truth is, we f'ing conservatives need to stop pining for Reagan. He is dead, and he ain't coming back. So we need to stop pretending/hoping some great leader is going to spring forth at any moment and save us.

I get tired of this shit. We can take back the Republican party and drive these big-government shitstains into the arms of their true party. But, the time is now.

You need to be going to the county meetings, meeting the local leaders, getting involved.

Because we have 13 months to get our shit together and have candidates ready to primary nearly all of these guys.

Pay little attention to anything that comes out of Washington DC until then--the real prize, the only action, is driving the Republican Party to the right. And it's not going to happen because of a speech or a bill or anything like that--it's going to be the fear of unemployment.

When the state becomes the be all and end all of existence not reproducing becomes an offense against society because the young ones belong to the state not the parents. 226 Two choices:

1. Completely gut GOP, and start over.

2. Third party (likely Libertarian) and kick out Ron Paul.

I choose 3. Start a whole new party.

I think the Republican "brand" is irrevocably tarnished, both by propaganda from the left and by their own reckless spending when they were in the majority.

The LIVs will never vote R because of all the "tax cuts for the rich", "racist", and "war on women" propaganda. Meanwhile, conservatives are finding it impossible to take them seriously any more. Stick a fork in them--the R party is toast.

The Libertarian Party has been around for about 40 years and I think they only got over 1% of the vote once. I see no evidence of progress. I was an LP member for a few years, but left after 9/11 because I couldn't tolerate their pacifist stance towards Islam.

A new Constitution Party (or whatever you want to call it) would pull fiscal conservatives from both the Rs and Ls, leaving the free sex & drug Ls to join the Ds.

A party that truly practices limited government would attract some social conservatives, the ones who want to be left alone. The ones who want to impose their morality may as well join up with the nanny staters on the left.

I could see a realignment where the cores of the Rs and Ds could fuse into one party, with the second party picking up those who don't feel represented by either D or R. We could especially pick up some conservative Ds if we take a firm stand against corruption.

235 And what brand baggage would you rather carry: the disfunctional GOP? Or the Libertarian wackiness?
================
The brand baggage of the GOP starts and ends with the top.
Here's the deal: We are the party the ended slavery, the party of the Reagan and Eisenhower booms that provided unprecedented prosperity for all Americans.

There are thousands of blacks who a proud to call themselves Republicans--I've heard them speak! And they're not single-issue or pro-choice Republicans, either. Full spectrum conservatives.

Yet, who do we get at the conventions?

The message and the messenger--that's the problem.

And that's why the Dems are beating us--the messenger is as important as the message.

Posted by: RoyalOil at February 24, 2013 10:39 AM (VjL9S)

236
I think the Republican "brand" is irrevocably tarnished, both by
propaganda from the left

The problem is that that won't change with a new party. Just think of how they attacked the Tea Party.

The LIVs will never vote R because of all the "tax cuts for the
rich", "racist", and "war on women" propaganda.

If that's so, the battle is already over, and your new party won't help. The only winning strategy is to present an attractive alternative and to educate the LIVs. Whether you like it or not, there are lots of them. We have to persuade them, not alienate them. I think it can be done.

Two choices:
1. Completely gut GOP, and start over.
2. Third party (likely Libertarian) and kick out Ron Paul.

Option 2 seems to be easier and more plausible.
Posted by: Foghorn Leghorn at February 24, 2013 08:35 AM (n8LUb)

Third option: co-opt the current GOP and make it a Conservative party again.

The infrastructure is in place. We just have to separate the idiot liberal check-pants blue bloods who pick the candidates from their leadership positions.

Go for the neck and take them out. I've been talking about this here for a while.

What we need is a banner, something new, not that old snake, and an anthem anyone can sing, and a hip icon and a website, and a constituency that understands and supports the Constitution. Then, good to go.

More than any of those, we need a platform, and one that will resonate with the populace. No acceptable platform (i.e., one that will fix the current problems) will so resonate until we hit bottom, and more of the populace (earnest liberals who are not members of the FSA) realize that we need fundamental change.
