74 [blockquote]In the ever growing literature about Soviet spies who infiltrated the White House during the lofty Popular Front years of Franklin D. Roosevelt’s presidency, the most fascinating — and perhaps unexpected — was Harry Dexter White.[/blockquote]

http://tinyurl.com/bbrj5qo

The animating principle of postwar democrat/liberal/progressive/leftist intellectual activity was,and still is, the need to suppress the fact that St. FDR's administration was riddled with Soviet spies. I'm not an expert, but I believe this explains the unhinged level of hatred of Nixon beyond the normal political bigotry of Democrats.

82 ...Last I read, unfunded liabilities=$123 trillion. $400K per taxpayer!!

And US taxpayers are liable to China for fifty cents on every dollar that our federal government spends.

Gratis the SCOTUS, ObamaCare has the federal ways and means to abscond with the individual's physical entity and private property if non-compliant. Obama already endorsed the efficiency of China's economic model that not only taxes/confiscates/imprisons and kill at will, but conducts human test trials without respect for the person, and sells their body parts regardless of whether the "subject" lives or dies as a result of losing the kidneys or other human organs/tissue. Eventually, it won't simply be blood transfused from taxpayer to Big Brother when we can't pay "our fair share" of government's taxes.

1984 ain't ever gonna happen...TRUST the government to care about you.

It's for the children. It's for your own good. And corporations are people, too. Who can argue with making a profit?

Would a global jubilee erase everyone's debt at once? In erasing debt, would savings necessarily also disappear?

124 74. No argument with the evidence regarding FDR, his own ideology and that of his administration.

Nixon was too strange. He ruined Adlai Stephenson, fellow native Californian and famous statesman, for having provided a character witness on behalf of Alger Hiss from the office of Supreme Court Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes, and subsequent from the FDR administration State Depts. of Agriculture, Justice and State. Hess didn't deny being a communist democrat. But then, so was FDR; so logically any communications between Hess and Moscow would have been directed by FDR himself, not messages from a "spy" against his President.

Without evidence, Nixon smeared Stephenson as a communist during Eisenhower's POTUS campaign. Stevenson argued that "The whole notion of loyalty inquisitions is a
national characteristic of the police state, not of democracy. The
history of Soviet Russia is a modern example of this ancient practice. I
must, in good conscience, protest against any unnecessary suppression
of our rights as free men. We must not burn down the house to kill the
rats."

Nixon played for McCarthy. Subsequent to election as Eisenhower's VP, he was ordered to attack McCarthy for pointing at the US Military and charging infiltration by communism.

And then, in his own administration, Nixon appoints Henry Kissinger as his adviser on National Security Affairs, "improving relations" not only with Russia (supposedly) but doing the unprecedented POTUS visit to Communist China, declaring those specific communists to be America's "most favored trade nation."

And the rest...half of every dollar spent by any agency in our government is our debt to China. Unless federal spending is severely curtailed, even if Congressional spending were to coast, the percentage of every dollar we owe in debt to China increases. INTEREST

here's what I think is happening:

Boehner wants to nix the sequester. He has enough votes but it means it will pass with a Democrat majority.

Which would pretty much make Boehner the Democrat Under-Speaker of the House for Pelosi.

So Boehner is trying to drum up more Republican votes for Obama.

If Boehner goes ahead without a Republican majority, it will seal his fate as Speaker.

It'll be interesting to see how things unfold.

Nah. Boehner kicked that whole "majority of the majority" rule to the curb months ago. This time around it would be the third or fourth important major bill he used the Democrats to pass.

Boehner won't leave that chair until after the Dems take the House back in 2014.

4% cuts across the board for 10 yearswould go a long way and be much less disruptive to daily life. (It also will not happen.)

Short-term interest rates at 2% would ensure that we could not pay the interest on our debt, leading to massive devaluation of the dollar, and brutal lowering of our standard of living. We don't have another 1.2 trillion dollars available each year just to pay higher interest.

Each 1% rise in interest rates costs us $600 billion a year in interest. And we get nothing for that spending, no services, not even govt jobs.

This illustrates that there is no way out of the current situation without massive economic pain. Bernanke is trying to spread the pain over about 10-15 years. Take your choice, slow and painful, or faster and extremely painful.

199 @190 No kidding Hrothgar. Let's take Obama at his word and the $80 billion (or whatever it really is) cut this year is going to close schools, close police stations, starve children, blah, blah, blah... What the hell is the other $3.5 trillion going for? Nevermind Obama. You're right. That $80 billion is essential. And since that remarkably well spent $80 billion seems to take care of all those essential things, let's leave all that in place and take a hatchet to the $3.5 trillion instead.

200 After WWII, both the Democrat and Republican Parties requested Eisenhower to run on their ticket. Truman had hoped to recruit General Eisenhower as a Democratic
candidate, but found him more interested in seeking the Republican
nomination.

Interesting,
the likely outcome of domestic public works might not have been
different, whether administered by Eisenhower or Stevenson. The US would
have its new postwar highway infrastructure.

Eisenhower, the popular war hero promising to get the US out of the UN
Korean war, used Hoover's FBI fabricated file of lies against Stevenson
during the campaign (in 1949, Adlai dared once criticize Hoover's FBI
abuses as inefficient). Corruption in Truman's administration, which was linked to certain members in the cabinet and senior White House staff, was a central issue in the 1952 presidential campaign which Adlai Stevenson, Truman's successor as Democratic nominee, lost to Republican Dwight D. Eisenhower. Eisenhower's campaign theme: "Truman's failures: Korea, Communism and Corruption". Truman went on a whistle-stop campaign tour for Stevenson, and accused the former general of disregarding the "sinister forces...
Anti-Semitism, anti-Catholicism, and anti-foreignism" within the
Republican Party.

Coincidentally, with all the dirty campaigning from both parties, the GOP did not first win by a landslide.

33,936,252 votes to 27,314,922.

But “Peace, Progress, and Prosperity,”certainly guaranteed GOP re-election. Wish that had been the GOP 2012 platform.

http://tinyurl.com/b5rb99j

Stevenson's campaign position never countered Truman on the Korean War.

Following Eisenhower defeating Stevenson twice, indeed the
Democrat Party skipped over what elements of conservatism remained
(shed associations with defeat) and projected FDR's socialism with
Truman's penchant for global warfare, gone steroid today given Obama.
More is the pity that Nixon (rather, Kissinger) would mark the
transformation of the Republican Party, suffocating its libertarian core
after marrying America to Red China. I remember Nixon always demanding
more executive authority, a constant theme battling Congress or anyone
for his right as POTUS to do whatever he saw fit. In a word, Watergate
brought his end. But given Kissinger's perpetuating mark, the two
parties certainly merged into a single enterprise of "shared values"
profiteering.

202 @Cheri193...yep. This is a major part of the problem. And people should start realizing that when you run out of money, once "essential" functions of government may have to go, or be privatized. For example, Canada privatized their air traffic control system in 1996. Canadian planes are not falling out of the skies.

195 excellent points but let me cover a few out of order
on the debt, yes a 2% would cost us the 1.2 trillion but like a year ago I did the math on what cut departments and a 10% across the board cuts would save and it came out to around 1 trillion.
now remember, by law the first thing we have to pay is the debt so that's covered. then we would pay for the department of defense then public safety because that's what the government by law is responsible for. then we pay for s/s and aid and go from there
will it devalue the dollar? yeppers but right now the dollar is inflated, to keep our credit rating one of the things moodys looks at is do we have a plan to get back on track and in this case yes we do.
will it hurt in the short term? of course. is it drastic? oh yeah but its time to pay the piper
everyone in the country says everyone must pay their fair share...well, its time for top ramen for all

In addition to the fish fries, scout your local paper for fundraising spaghetti dinners, pancake breakfasts, and the like. Many schools, churches, and organizations have such fundraisers.

They are way cheaper than eating at a restaurant, and you will meet nice people.

Not a pleasant experience. Other dishes were also scant and not flavorful, according to my family.

295 OK, morons, I am here with a few minutes to spare and will give you some other money saving tips.

1. If you have friends in similar funemployment situations, hold pitch-ins and get together for dinner. Split up leftovers and take home and freeze.

2. Shop at the lowest-priced grocery you can find for canned goods and staples, even if it means going to a seedy place. Canned goods and staples (like oatmeal) are pretty much sealed and no matter how crappy the store, it won't matter.

3. Plant a garden. You can do tomatoes, peppers, onions and cilantro cheap with plants from Lowe's or local growers. Save surplus and trade.

4. Scour internet for cheap and filling recipes, and there are a lot. Casseroles plus a vegetable will keep you going.

5. If you are really broke, check church food pantries. In Indiana, all you have to do is show your driver's license and sign a form attesting to your income. (No one really checks.) You can usually pick up a week's worth of food this way and people will be nice to you. I work at one on Fridays at my church, so I know what I am talking about.

We used to do this when I was an Air Force wife living in West Berlin in the late 60's. At that time enlisted salaries were very low and you often ran out of food before the end of the month. We hit upon doing this as a way to save money.

Cheap entertainment we also did included Monopoly tournaments, cribbage matches, and trivia contests.

339 I'm thinking of a silhouette of a Minuteman with the name unfurling off his musket, and the tag line "the heartland of the Massachusetts Republican Party" for the black and white logo, and something bordering on pure iconography for the younger one.

The first letter of each word will be white, inside a red or orange square. The rest of the letters will be black on white.

I want to use a sans-serif Bauhaus font because for 80 years it's been "futuristic" and people kind of get that intuitively.

Additionally, the first letters of the four words can then be separated and made into a larger red-and-orange square that I think will look really nice on the web.

Check your local hotels, lots have free breakfasts. Food's usually mediocre, but okay. Walk in, go upstairs first. Wait 10 minutes in the hallway and come down direct to the dining room. 352 Tobacco Road, it doesn't matter which party controls your legislature. The people raising money and picking and funding the candidates are all liberals. They have figured out how to climb to the top of the party and pull he ladders up behind them. They will do fine whether the D or the R wins elections.

Treat them as the enemy. Join the party, take your local organization over or start one. And relentlessly attack the leadership for being too liberal, while recruiting and organizing people who think like you.

And then go take some local seats. Once you show you are successful and have a winning record, money and support will flow to you. You will be able to take seats in the state committee and eventually the executive board, and install real conservatives instead of these weak assholes.

They had no .22, no 9mm, no .45ACP. Still had a few boxes of rifle rounds like .270 and 22-250, but that was about it. The guy at the counter said, "We got a good shipment in late last night. The difference is they scrap them all now, unless they get a "freak" (good or collectible car). I'm sure the owner buys the freaks for a few hundred and shops them out to make private dough. NASCAR has three major series, one of which uses pickup trucks (superficially) so it's easier to tell that it's different. I don't know the specific rule differences between the Sunday (Sprint Cup) and Saturday (Nationwide) series, though I think it's mainly to keep the cars cheaper. Folks who do well on Saturdays for a while tend to get moved into the Sunday races. When the two series race at the same track on a given weekend, it's common for some drivers to enter both races for practice, or because they get paid for both.

412 Bob Woodward's article in WaPo just nailed Obama's hide to the wall. He has the documentation from his interview's with WH staff to prove Obama initiated the sequester: (Just in case you haven't read this yet)

Bob Woodward : ".. The president and Lew had this wrong. My extensive reporting.. shows that the automatic spending cuts were initiated by the White House and were the brainchild of Lew and White House congressional relations chief Rob Nabors — probably the foremost experts on budget issues in the senior ranks of the federal government.

Obama personally approved of the plan for Lew and Nabors to propose the sequester to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.). They did so at 2:30 p.m. July 27, 2011, according to interviews with two senior White House aides who were directly involved.

Nabors has told others that they checked with the president before going to see Reid. A mandatory sequester was the only action-forcing mechanism they could devise. Nabors has said, “We didn’t actually think it would be that hard to convince them” — Reid and the Republicans — to adopt the sequester. “It really was the only thing we had. There was not a lot of other options left on the table.”

If you check market-ticker.org you'll find that a conservative estimate based on recent grumblings from the fed that the current easing can't continue forever puts a significant bond market event (jump in rates blowing everything all to hell) no more than two years out.

No, I was trying to put two thoughts in one comment.

Also, don't listen to the jokester above. Both series drive counter clockwise, except on road courses (no idea what the trucks will do on a dirt track later in the year). The rules I was referring to were specifications on the cars. Also Nationwide races are much shorter.

Besides the tech glitches, there were a lot of good little lefties blaming Olive Garden and Red Lobster's decline on cutting their employee hours or laying off due to Obamacare, and "good people" are boycotting them for treating their employees so badly

535 I think soap operas are horrifying. It's emotional porn and inures people to awful behavior, and teaches them to expect and suspect it, even if it's not there.

No argument whatsoever regarding WaPo's collusion. I doubt anyone but Woodward, could have published that article with them. I agree that any further attention paid by WaPo will be minimal, but it was a small victory to have convincing evidence presented which did prove Obama had started the ball rolling. He had documented all the dates of his interviews with Obama's staff and their on-record remards about sequesterization during the earlier period when he was writing his book. It was the best documented time-line with specific names of staff that I have read on the topic.

It is interesting to watch the guy responsible for Watergate, attempt to expose some of the WH doublespeak. He's on the sidelines now.
