I've been noticing some people have been fabing AR15 magazines out of three dimensional printers. That's probably the easier way to go for small quantities. If we're going to start from scratch, I'd recommend 3-D printing. Bending metal, which I know how to do, would have a longer lead time. A couple of printers and an oven would get us creating wealth in a couple of weeks, versus a few months using the old way. If we really wanted to get up and running quickly, we could consider plastic printing for the obvious parts. Those are really cheap. The scanning machine is expensive but you only have to do it relatively few times and can rent access. The old machines were cruder but more robust, it was almost all stamped steel and springs. Springmaking can be learned and contracted out once you get specs down. A big problem is you don't just need sizes of parts, you need fitment and to test it with the guns. That's more money. You could start with rare magazines and work your way up as you make money. I suggest "robust" plastic designs (easier for rifles) on 3-D printers because the initial investment is smaller. Also the DP-51 is a modified S&W clone, not a hi-power clone. It's a modified double-action and not single action like an HP. It uses Browning locking but like half of guns do. Springs are more than just specs. They're very picky as to durability and corrosion resistance and rate and construction.
It is not uber-hard but it's not "Bob's Your Uncle." In fact not that many companies make magazine springs, and they spend a lot of time developing "recipes," though they do tend to apply them to every gun at once when they get a good one. **** As an expert in these affairs I can tell you it is easy to make springs. Get untempered spring steel at McMaster Carr online and cut to width and length, bend to shape. Put the spring on an 3/8" aluminum plate, raised up on bricks high enough to get a flame under and big enough to accommodate the spring by half again, heat plate from underneath with a propane torch. Keep torch moving. When the correct temp is reached you can watch as the heat runs up the spring stock by watching the color change. I saw at a big medical trade show, a company that did 3d printing to visualize patient anatomy to help guide surgeons and stuff. The source data was a volume of medical CT images, which they then processed into a CAD file. So essentially anything you can CT scan can be set up for solid printing. Re fabricating magazines. Might be a good market for ie. 14 round clips that work in weapons that were designed for 15+ round clips. You might even be able to have a program where the sods in idiot states that do the magazine round limits send you their original clips and be able to use those springs.

The source data was a volume of medical CT images, which they then processed into a CAD file. So essentially anything you can CT scan can be set up for solid printing. As long as the ammo is not corroded I guess you could still fire it. If it shows signs of corrosion, especially around the case mouth, get a bullet puller and take them apart and trash all of it, cause it ain't good fer nothin' once it starts to corrode.
Yes eventually you will be able to buy ammo again, the ammo manufacturers are in the interesting position of either buying more equipment and hiring more people to meet a demand that might not be sustained or not be able to meet the market demands. Right now there's a lot of panic buying, will it last? Time will tell, the ammo manufacturers will either take a chance to make a capital investment to be able to ramp up production or they will not, there's a lot of variables in doing it. Not sure, but that may be from moisture. I've got ammo that old, no problem, but I kept it in an air conditioned house. But I had my guns in a safe in the workroom in the garage that got a little moisture underneath, and the brass rivets in my leather holsters got the green slime like that. Yes! Now some folks are perfectly comfortable with using .22WMR in Mauser actioned bolt guns but I would NOT do so for 2 reasons.... 1) the dimensions of the cases ARE different 2) why? I mean really why risk it based on pressure tolerances and such...the performance gain is there but if you are in an application needing the .22WMR bite the bullet and go .22 hornet or .222/.223 IMHO.... check out the SAAMI pressure and follow your bore instructions and if a new bore is on an old action your receiver instructions IMHO.... the most common current .22WMR application is in Lever guns and the PMR-30 from kel tec.... I stopped by the nearest rifle range last Sunday and it was packed out. Interestingly, the men were mostly shooting AR style weapons and the women were mostly sporting beautiful bolt action dear/sniper rifles.

One of the biggest misconceptions people have of these things is that the day of the collapse is the thing. So they ask "What might we have done differently that day or the day before to avoid it?" The truth is that the ramp of the market/economy on margin is what made the collapse possible. So if you're looking for a general cause, check when it became easier to "invest" with borrowed money and see which of those changes was made most irresponsibly. For the coming crash, you might look at the Kanjorsky hearing after which "Mark to Market" accounting rules got tossed. But that was done to arrest a collapse in progress-i.e. maintain a previous false status quo, so you can argue the cause for what's coming was earlier. Of course if you think about our monetary system, not from the "Fed is a false idol, hence evil" angle, but just a matter of how exponents work, you'd realize that a system based on loaning money into existence must either have fairly frequent bankruptcies of the primary dealers (those who get money directly from the Fed) or it must ultimately collapse into a singularity with no money in existence and the Fed claiming a right to collateral of some kind. Revolvers are supposedly so reliable, In my experience they are the worst, except my 629, .44. Never a misfire. Same with XD .45, I suppose, cant say that about any other pistola.

I love Attenborough's documentaries, you guys. Tortoises are interesting, but sea turtles are marvelous and fun beyond belief to swim around.
