NBC Falls to Fifth Place in Crucial Ratings Sweeps for First Time;
Finishes Beneath Univision

Univision finishing fourth is a big deal, too.

NBC excuses this by noting their "Big Guns" -- are Revolution and The Voice really "Big Guns?" I guess they are, in relative terms, for NBC -- are on hiatus.

Only two of their shows garnered better than a 2 rating. Remember the pre-cable days of the big three, when top rated shows might have a 30 rating or higher? Those days are definitely gone. That's not NBC's fault, but is a 2 rating now the Mendoza Line between success and failure?

The model for TV now seems to be the model for Obama's political campaign: Microtargeting. Targeting very niche audiences with tiny, shallow appeals, pulling in a couple of hundred thousand people here and there, and pocketing you small wins.

Actually... Allah posted this yesterday and noted there are now three shows about auctioning off the contents of unclaimed storage lockers. And this funny and informative song about this general phenomenon, of 2-3 different "reality" show for each different niche interest.

Because if you watch "Ace of Cakes," why not also "Cake Boss"?

The cheaper something is to make, the more likely it is to be knocked off. This is true everywhere, but being a geek I do know that the Knock Off problem was rampant in comic books -- a cheap form of entertainment to produce. Of course it's rife in TV and in movies, too.

But the reason I mention cheapness is that as it gets easier to produce a TV show -- technologically, good digital cameras can now be had for $1500 or so, and that's new and not used, and everyone now can have their own digitally editing bay for $1500 as well -- and easier to distribute them through cheap methods (now garbage-channel cable, and more and more, the internet), we'll see even more of this sort of very specific niche targeting.

I mean, if you want to do a reality TV show, all you need is a crew of 12 and some cameras and some mics. And of course you have to rent out that one house in LA that all the cheapie-beepie reality shows seem to film at for ten days. Knock off another show, or come up with your own slight variation of a hundred other micro-target shows -- a reality show about baseball card collecting for adults, where each contestant has his own mock baseball card and keeps it in his pocket, until he's evicted, at which point is card is ripped and marked "in poor condition"! -- and you're in the TV business, Jack.

Hell, I might produce a Dungeons & Dragons elimination reality show. What the hell. Why not. Someone would watch it.

Via @ryan_l_lewis

EC's Idea...

1. Put 12 democrats on an island with enough food and water for only 11.

2. Then tell them, one of them is a republican.

3. Take money to bank.

Actually I think this is a great idea, parodying liberals' efforts to sniff out who is One of Us and who is Not One of Us.

Imagine, you have a real Republican but he knows the whole liberal rap. (Most of us do.) You cast your Democrats from places like Utah and Alabama to make them red herrings. (Well, of course you have your NY and Boston and SF liberals too, but you make sure you have a bunch of liberals from Texas and such. Wouldn't want to make it to easy.)

Now you film them doing what they do in real life, attempting to out-liberal each other and to see if anyone disagrees, so that they may be shunned.

46 Going to my 3 hours every 4 years theory, this ratings BS shows that the GOP should've handled the debates a little differently.

There's no reason to give legacy media that respect. I mean, I know that Obama would've refused to debate in any circumstance without his co-debate partners (way to collude, JEF!) in a friendly environment, but still.

And with micro targeting, the GOP could really push some wedges out to these groups. With ninja bureaucrats SWAT storming small businesses across the spectrum, maybe some de-reg would be a welcome campaign promise.

I loved this passage in the story:

NBC suffered the lowest ratings ever for an in-season scripted series premiere with the debut of Do No Harm on January 31. The dismal 0.9/3 of the premiere fell 22% to 0.7/2 on February 7, leading to the series’ swift cancellation. The White House comedy 1600 Penn is probably not far behind, having hit a weak 1.1/3 in its last airing February 7 (MWR - Yeah, and good riddance. Garbage.). Adding to NBC’s woes, the Season 2 return of Smash was a train wreck. With a limp 1.1/3 rating, it returned down 71% from its Season 1 debut and 39% from its first-year finale — and it fell another 25% to a series low of 0.9/2 this week.

I know it's cruel of me, but I can't stop laughing.

As for Do No Harm, if you're going to make a modern "Dr. Jeckyll and Mr. Hyde," just call it that. Okay? When you name your protagonist with the split personality Dr. Jason Cole (ie, "Dr J. Cole"), everyone knows what you're trying to do. Just do it and quit the cutesy crap.

Speaking of dead tv shows, when is the last time anyone anywhere has had anything to say about any episode of South Park?

Are they currently running new episodes? Do they even know.

My theory is, Matt and Trey stopped having any real creative input in to the show about 4 years ago. They still pretend they do, but they don't. So what gets made now is like a fanfic version of what used to be a real tv show.

Imagine, you have a real Republican but he knows the whole liberal rap.

Alabama to make them red herrings. (Well, of course you have your NY
and Boston and SF liberals too, but you make sure you have a bunch of
liberals from Texas and such. Wouldn't want to make it to easy.)

Now you film them doing what they do in real life, attempting to

"The Shirt off my Back"

Take a highly successful individual, millionaire and self-made. Take away all thier money, possessions, accreditations, contacts to friends and family. Give them a new, blank identity. The model for Obama's political campaign was a little bit different.

It was "pulling in a couple of hundred thousand people here and there," and then having a substantial fraction of them illegally cast multiple votes.

As has now been extensively factually documented.

Interesting that it NEVER comes up.... as they essentialy steal all that stuff.

The storage lockers that get auctioned off are ones where the owners (or their estate, should hey be deceased) have failed to keep up with the rental payments. I'm not familiar with rental contracts at storage facilities, but I imagine some of the small print includes wording to the effect of, "failure to pay the monthly rental fee for XYZ months in a row will lead to the forfeiture of the locker and all its contents." Or whatever the legalese would be.

Cracked.com had a good piece just the other day about the dark side of some reality shows, and the #1 spot on the list of five was reserved for Storage Wars.

I can't watch that stuff. It's too depressing to think of someone who's lost everything and been forced to put their life into a storage locker, only to have it auctioned off because they couldn't keep up with the payments.

Nope. Part of your agreement you sign with the self-storage place is that if you don't pay your bill, they can just seize your stuff.

The most reputable places will actually try to track down owners/survivors and get their back-rent before selling the stuff off, but they technically don't have to.

I used to have a friend who was into that kind of thing. Those storage lockers haven't been paid in (at minimum) 90 days. It's essentially an estate sale of whatever you had in your storage locker.

There's no reason to give legacy media that
respect. I mean, I know that Obama would've refused to debate in any
circumstance without his co-debate partners (way to collude, JEF!) in a

And with micro targeting, the GOP could really push some wedges out

I have often said that Republicans should give the established media absolutely no respect. Don't talk to them, don't do interviews, don't answer any questions from them. Keep repeating over and over that they are biased, and that you're not going to grant them any credibility.

Repetition will eventually get people to believe it, and it might eventually force them to hire people outside their philosophical rut.

Those self-storage places are offering a service for money- you pay them, and they'll keep your stuff. When you don't pay them, you not just "not paying them" you're actively preventing them from taking on a new client who would pay them.

Understand that we're talking a minimum of three months here. I think some municipalities in Texas even make it 6, including a minimum number of attempts to contact, etc.

We're not talking about one, or even two, missed payments here.

Further, usually those places will allow- up to a few minutes before the auction starts- the legitimate owner to show up with the back-rent and prevent the auction of their stuff.

You don't have the right to keep your stuff in my storage locker. I'm selling you that privilege.

What were they (the storage place) supposed to do? Wait a year to 18 months to get paid?

My theory is, Matt and Trey stopped having any real creative input in to the show about 4 years ago. They still pretend they do, but they don't. So what gets made now is like a fanfic version of what used to be a real tv show.

Uh you woe be wrong. They put out about 14 new episodes per year. The last new episode was at the beginning of November. New episodes will likely return in march or April. And watch six days to air to see how much they are still involved in the show.

_

Posted by: BumperStickerist at February 21, 2013 04:24 PM (J8DGo)

324 Yeah... there is Right... and there is Legal... and sometimes (more often lately) they do not intersect.

I think it depends on what you consider right. It's very sad that the collected belongings of people's lives are auctioned away, but on the other hand the owner of the facility needs to make a living, too. If he or she allows the storage unit to remain in arrears they're losing money, not to mention preventing someone else who might also be hard up for luck from being able to store their belongings until they can get on their feet again. Someone who might otherwise have to abandon their belongings or else sell them off themselves.

Just because something is very painful doesn't mean it's not the right thing to do. If you don't feel at least a little sympathy for the previous owners of those items, THEN I think you're in moral trouble.

Why should they give it back? Why should the owners of the storage space go to the expense of tracking you down and then shipping you your stuff? What possible higher morality is there in forcing the person who is owed money to take the burden of returning belongings to someone who has abandoned those belongings? You do comprehend that we are discussing people how have not paid for the space that they were voluntarily renting from someone else. This isn't random, these are people who are already deadbeats on what they owe. But you somehow think that the business owner who is attempting to recoup some amount of the lost revenue from the loss of usage of that space is the one who is morally wrong?

Posted by: Heralder at February 21, 2013 04:30 PM (+xmn4)

Because EVERYTHING on reality TV is a "war."

Storage Wars
Whale Wars
Parking Wars
Design Wars
Whisker Wars

It's laughable how many shows have "War" in the title. Apparently there are no suitable synonyms in the english language.

You literally cannot make this sh*t up.

Imagine putting a kid doing math as we learned it, next to the poor sap that had to learn it this way?

I remember some of my programming classes in compsci. We literally were graded on the efficiency of the code, even if the output was correct. The professors checked the processing time.

This new math reminds me of that.

The difference being that eviction from a dwelling means potentially the difference b/w life and death. And even then, after enough time, you've gotta get gone.

(Even though some of them are like cockroaches and NEVER leave. I say this as the daughter of a guy who rented out an apartment once and took two years to get the lousy deadbeats evicted, after leaving the house in unlivable squalor. But I digress.)

Chris Christie falls so deeply asleep at a Springsteen show, he's declared dead. He's buried. He wakes up. The cemetery caretaker finds him chewing his way out of the grave. Caretaker alerts the...the X Files. But not the X Files. You know who I mean. The same kind of thing can be in other shows.

The X Files think Christie's a zombie. There are no muscles on him. He's just a skeleton with a quarter ton of mushy sludge hanging off it. This almost fully decomposed body could only be moving supernaturally. To be sure he's a zombie-zombie, they do a second test. Christie drinks the whole barrel of fetus brains in formaldehyde and belches. The smell that comes out of him induces Scully's miscarriage. ...Not Scully. You know who I mean.

They chain Christie to a wall like in Day of the Dead. They try to teach him to talk, but all he can say is "I wasn't asleep! BROOOOOOOOOOOOSSSSSSSS!" They're about to give up and shoot him. But Mulder (not Mulder) turns his pistol away when Christie says something different: "What kind of gravy was on those meatballs? It's not sitting right." He shits himself. He shits himself again. Then he shits himself. It's pouring out of his suit pants by the gallon. The pool reaches Mulder's shoe before he has time to step back. He puts the gun back on Christie.

430 President Obama, speaking to a very friendly Al Sharpton as part of a round with black broadcasters Thursday, offered a harsh assessment of the GOP — arguing that their opposition to taxing the wealthy was the only thing keeping an otherwise deeply divided party from falling apart.

Speaking about the looming sequester deadline, Obama said: “My sense is that their basic view is that nothing is important enough to raise taxes on wealthy individuals or corporations, and they would rather see [billions in sequester cuts to social programs]… That’s the thing that binds their party together at this point.”

Obama boasted that “75 percent” of the country backed his mix of tax hikes and spending reductions — rejecting Republicans’ argument that he needs to pony up more budget and entitlement cuts.

What a liar. He thinks if he says it, it is true. A lot of dictators think that way. Dictators and stupid people and assholes.

Oh, there's someone saying that the owners should ship stuff back.

I don't know where people are getting this idea that there are no protections for those whose stuff is in the lockers. Most jurisdictions have statutory provisions regulating when the sales can take place, how far in arrears the person is and the notice going to the renters. If the sale is done improperly, then the company will be liable for the sale of those goods. It's not as if I'm a day late and bam all my shit got sold.

There is no reason that conservatives couldn't chip in to produce 30 minute sitcom or drama on a regular basis, say 12 episodes with a new episode every two weeks. Release it on Amazon, Hulu or Netflix. Hell, see if you can get some well off conservatives in Hollywood to throw in their support.

502 Paula Broadwell’s promotion to O-5 stalled
The Associated Press
Posted : Thursday Feb 21, 2013 11:07:59 EST
WASHINGTON — The Army has stalled the promotion of Paula Broadwell, the reservist whose affair with former CIA Director David Petraeus led to his resignation.

Broadwell was promoted to lieutenant colonel in the Army Reserves last August. But Army spokesman George Wright said that was reversed early this month and will be pending for as long as she is under investigation.

Investigators have been looking since November into whether Broadwell had classified information in her home without permission.

Under Army rules, a promotion can be delayed if new information about a person comes to light within six months of the promotion. Investigators have said they believe materials found in her home were gathered while she was researching a biography on Petraeus, a retired general and former commander in Afghanistan.

517 Former Sen. Chuck Hagel declined to sign a letter circulated by Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) in 2007 calling upon then-Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice to press Arab allies of the U.S. to recognize Israel’s right to exist “and not use such recognition as a bargaining chip for future Israeli concessions.”
Seventy-nine Senators eventually signed the letter, which was sponsored by Schumer and by Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC).
The Schumer-Graham letter “concerning the Responsibilities of Friendly Arab States” has not, apparently, been cited yet in the debate over Hagel’s potential confirmation as Secretary of Defense. The letter also calls upon Arab allies to “take meaningful steps” to assist the Palestinian Authority, to stop supporting terror groups, to end the Arab states’ boycott of Israel, and to push Hamas to recognize Israel and past peace agreements.
The most charitable explanation for Hagel’s refusal to sign might be that the letter differs from the terms of the 2002 Arab Peace Initiative, which Hagel has praised, and which offered Israel recognition in exchange for full withdrawal to its 1967 borders.
Hagel has also claimed he did not sign such letters unless they were directed to the President, but he failed to join 96 Senators in a critical pro-Israel letter to President Bill Clinton in 2000.
Among the minority of Senators who declined to sign the Schumer-Graham letter were members of both parties, including Thad Cochran (R-MS) and Claire McCaskill (D-MO), both of whom have declared they will vote for Hagel’s confirmation. Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-UT), who is regarded as pro-Israel but voted “present” on the motion to end debate on Hagel’s confirmation on Feb. 14, also declined to sign the Schumer-Graham letter.
Then-Sens. Joe Biden (D-DE), Hillary Clinton (D-NY), and Barack Obama (D-IL) all signed the Schumer-Graham letter.

545 Speaking of Mamet, I was watching State and Main last night and there really are few movies that are better at sending up Hollywood's hypocrisy and pretension not to mention the wonderful jab at politicians. I just wonder if Alec Baldwin and SJP realize that they are the jokes instead of being the ones making the jokes. Not to mention that movie has the single best (fake) product placement ever. Go you huskies!

But you know what? Fuck HGTV, they film a lot of the shit in Canada, just to cut costs.

What you wrote--

is an oldRon Paul trope, the kind of stuff you can find on Alex Jones' Prison Planet conspiracy website. Rand Paul's chances of winning the 2016 GOP nomination are in direct proportion to his ability to separate himself from that crowd, which includes his own father.

Put a bunch of humanities students on a farm with no modern conveniences. They have to work for a full year and the winner gets a scholarship to go back to school and get a second bachelor's degree in something useful.

638 The more these shows copy off each other, the worse they get. I had a chance to watch Diggers on NatGeo the other day. These are guys going around with metal detectors digging up stuff. Now my dad used to sell metal detectors and I went a huge number of outings with him so I know a little something about metal detecting.
The guys on this show are IDIOTS! They make up their own jargon ("I see Round in the Hole!") and they keep saying that round things are rare. Everything they dug up that episode was round. They scream and jump up an ddown whenever they find a penny! The graphics informs us of the POSSIBLE worth of their finds. By my calculcations, in one whole episode they uncovered about $30 worth of stuff. They spent that much in gas, not to mention time.
Also the sound guy take waaaaaay to many liberties with the beeping noise and we get to see the same "view down the pole" over and over and over again.
But talking about the Democrat reality show reminded me of the time Kennedy, Humphrey, and Mayor Daley were in a boatin Lake Michigan and it sprang a leak. None of them could swim and there was only one life vest. Being good Democrats, they decided to determine who would get the vest by secret ballot. So they voted and when the votes were counted, Daley won by 15 votes.

Well, I suppose if you are in favor of killing fetuses at the drop of hat, for whatever trivial reason you can think of, right up until labor, then using a meaningless, impersonal euphemism for the baby would help you to delude yourself about what is being killed.

647 From the drudge link on Detroit:

Nearly half of the owners of Detroit's 305,000 properties failed to
pay their tax bills last year, exacerbating a punishing cycle of
declining revenues and diminished services for a city in a financial
crisis, according to a Detroit News analysis of government records.
The
News reviewed more than 200,000 pages of tax documents and found that
47 percent of the city's taxable parcels are delinquent on their 2011
bills. Some $246.5 million in taxes and fees went uncollected, about
half of which was due Detroit and the rest to other entities, including
Wayne County, Detroit Public Schools and the library.
Delinquency
is so pervasive that 77 blocks had only one owner who paid taxes last
year,
The News found. Many of those who don't pay question why they
should in a city that struggles to light its streets or keep police on
them.

Oprah once put together a show where a family had to live like frontier folk with no modern amenities whatsoever. They had to prepare for the harsh Winter by stocking up on wood and canning food. there were no games, no phones, etc...

After a few weeks, the grandmother was allowed to visit but only bring gifts that would have been common to the era.

History is a humanity, son, and I'd bet you would find plenty of volunteers from that disciplineto run a historic farm. The constant bashing of the humanities on this site gets old really quick.

658 This isn't random, these are people who are already
deadbeats on what they owe. But you somehow think that the business
owner who is attempting to recoup some amount of the lost revenue from
the loss of usage of that space is the one who is morally wrong?

Okay then.

Not all the "abandoned" storage lockers may be rented by deadbeats. Some renters may be in jail, and some might be deceased, with their heirs not even knowing that Pops put his collection of Old Masters into mini-storage.
If I were ever to bid on locker contents, and I might, because I am something of an auction fan, I would try to make an effort to contact the original owner in the event that I ever got something outrageously valuable in a "pig in a poke" auction like that.

Most coins found are worth very little...they're pitted, scarred, and corroded to the point where they're worth little more than the value of the metals they were minted with. I used to go out with my metal detector all the time....I found lots of coins, more than I could count. Lots of silver, (never any gold coins though...sigh), and in general, my 'finds' earned me enough money to buy batteries for my metal detector.

I did find the rusted remains of a revolver once in a drained lake bed in Oklahoma, (Lake Eufalah), during a particularly dry year, and once, I got laid after finding a friend's lost earring at a local park.

You're free to put a stop to the misery any time you feel like it.

Press Alt+F4 and all the bad stuff will go away.

The Humanties (and other Liberal Arts courses) are chock full of banal, bullshit disguised as erudition and thoughtful discourse.

The produce thousands of ill equipped for life BA grads every year and charge a bundle to do so.

It's not the IDEA of the Humanities so much as their execution and the cock holsters and propagandists that fill the ranks of the professorships that irritate.

Thus the satire and parody.

667 Really, you don't need to worry about any of this. As the small businesses that are the subject of so many of these reality shows slowly go out of business, television will be forced to the next level of its devolution, wherein "reality " shows will all become Twitterized - content will reduce to brief snippets of video captured by random posters on their smart phones and sent up to the networks for air play. You'll have to be so stoned to watch this for any length of time that all drugs will be legalized.
