It's been brought to my attention I don't blog enough good news.

So here you go.

Kate Upton is a hot Hollywood commodity right now (the model just landed the cover of Sports Illustrated's Swimsuit Edition for the second year in a row!), so how did the bombshell spend Valentine's Day?

"On Valentine's Day I had 17 dates - all the [Sports Illustrated] girls!" Kate said of spending the romantic holiday with her fellow models, on Wednesday's Access Hollywood Live. "We were launching [the magazine] in Vegas."

...

"I kissed 17 S.I. girls! I was killing it," she said with a laugh, while pretending to brush dirt off her shoulder, a la Jay-Z. "[It was] every man's dream."

But since it's me there is some bad news...there aren't any photos.

Added: Via Katherine Miller (who you should follow on Twitter for politics, sports and snark)...a look at how a member of the Directors Guild of America filled out his Oscar ballot. Interesting even if you're not into the Oscars as such.

Heh. Not in Florida!
"
An Indianapolis man might have thought he was just minding his own business today when he was cruising along Ind. 135 in Johnson County.
The only problem -- well, there were several -- was that he was driving a small motorized shopping scooter, police said, that could barely be seen by other motorists.
He was northbound in the southbound lanes.
At 3:49 a.m.
And the scooter, police said, did not belong to him but rather was the property of an area Walmart store.
Yet another problem: When police stopped the scooter, they noticed its operator – Marcus Earl Degraphenreed, 27 – had glassy eyes and seemed to be disoriented. Degraphenreed failed followup field sobriety tests, a police report states.
When a Johnson County sheriff’s deputy saw an “in-store use only” sign on the scooter normally used by disabled customers, he asked Degraphenreed where he got it. The man replied simply that he found it, a police report states. He did not specify where he found it.
Police arrested the man on preliminary charges of theft and driving under the influence. He was taken to Johnson Memorial Hospital for a blood draw.
The Amigo brand motorized scooter was returned to the Walmart store at County Line Road and Emerson Avenue in Greenwood,"

55 Tourists staying at a Los Angeles hotel bathed, brushed teeth and drank with water from a tank in which a young woman’s body was likely decomposing for more than two weeks, police said.

Elisa Lam’s corpse was found in the Cecil Hotel’s rooftop water tank by a maintenance worker who was trying to figure out why the water pressure was low Tuesday.

Lam’s parents reported her missing in early February. The last sighting of her was in the hotel on January 31, Los Angeles Police said.

Detectives are now investigating the 21-year-old Canadian’s suspicious death, police Sgt. Rudy Lopez said.

72 Renewable energy accounted for all new electric capacity added in the United States last month, according to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission.

In all, 1,231 megawatts of new generating capacity were installed in January. Of that total, wind provided 958 megawatts, solar chipped in 267 megawatts and biomass contributed 6 megawatts.

That's a marked difference from January 2012, when coal led the way with 808 megawatts of the 1,693 megawatts added. Natural gas followed with 445 megawatts, and wind tossed in 276 megawatts to take the pole for renewables.

Saw the tweets at Twitchy destroying Toure's latest gun control tweets and it reminded me of something I wanted to ask if others have noticed. In the suburbs of Seattle where I live it used to be a very newsworthy event when some type of crime (robbery, rape, assault) occurred, even though there wasn't a ton of crime going on. Now, however, in the last year there has been a huge uptick in crimes being committed, lots of armed robberies, etc. But, there has been a marked decrease in the news coverage.

I postulate that reporting an uptick in crime makes it difficult to successfully argue gun control issues (unless reporting on some "innocent gun victim" story) and so the media is squashing any news of this sort. Have others noticed a downturn in your area's crime reporting?

It's a blue state - crime reporting is very selective. It's Jersey, lots of criminals get punished and it never makes the news, or the knowledge of the cops.

112 In all, 1,231 megawatts of new generating capacity
were installed in January. Of that total, wind provided 958 megawatts,
solar chipped in 267 megawatts and biomass contributed 6 megawatts.

That's
a marked difference from January 2012, when coal led the way with 808
megawatts of the 1,693 megawatts added. Natural gas followed with 445
megawatts, and wind tossed in 276 megawatts to take the pole for
renewables.

Posted by: War on Coal at February 21, 2013 11:59 AM (e8kgV)

Pity, isn't it, that 1225 megawatts of that (the wind and the solar) will require "spinning reserves" powered by coal, gas, nuclear, or hydro to take up the slack for when the wind stops blowing, or the Sun goes behind a cloud.

Yep, 1225 megawatts of new generating capacity that cannot be classed as "base load" because it's not available 24/7.

The Italians are very anxious to get the Papacy back. Many of the high rank Vatican officials are tightly wired into Italy's political and financial structures, and having a paisan in the head office helps build an extra ring of protection around some less-than-religious activities. People think the Pope has only got to deal with keeping believers in line, but he's also got a huge bureaucracy of competing interests / turfsto ride herd on, as well.

He was informed to dump Novak and get married that weekend. It didn't matter to who, just so long as she was black. That's how he got married to (funnily enough) dancer Loray White.

It turns out that it has a lot to do with how the Progressive left defines “democracy.” It turns out that for them, “democracy” is only tangentially related to how a government is chosen, or even with voting!

his stupid pre-Oscar commercials. The one with James Bond, where he
mocks Bond for ordering it shaken not stirred because "nobody stirs

them. And a simple fucking wikipedia or ehow search proves it. It's
dumb, it's totally a dumb skit and if it is an example of his humor for
the Oscars, well caveat emptor etc.

Oh yeah. The most incredulous thing about the anti-Scott Walker tantrum was their belief that overturning his election was "democracy."

Had a short but pointed fight with my aunt (who lives in Canada...) on FB when she posted some shit about "standing against Walker for the people who live and work in Wisconsin" and I pointed out that people who live and work in Wisconsin (of which I was one and she was not) VOTED HIM IN.

Dude. There are some very very nasty penalties for violating the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act. Hell, when I was doing some adjunct instructor work for a university, we got put through a training class each semester on the restrictions, including that we had to have a waiver in our hands before we could give information out. Some poor secretary got fired because she left some transcripts next to a copier for a few minutes when she answered the phone and students came in and were rifling through them. I will be stunned if there were actual FERPA compliant waivers in the sheriff's files as the language of the waiver in the article is not a FERPA waiver. There's also the fact that what appears to be being shared is not academic performance but personal evaluations of the student. Where the fuck is that information coming from? Do the Iowa State students know that their profs are keeping arm chair psych evaluations of them?

219 Some House Democrats have introduced a bill that would establish a diplomatic envoy in Tehran and mandate direct talks between Washington and Iran over its nuclear development plans.

California Rep. Barbara Lee, the legislation’s chief sponsor, said the measure is aimed at reversing the administration’s official “no contact” policy with Tehran, reports The Hill newspaper.

“The darkening clouds surrounding Iran’s nuclear program are troubling,” she said last week. “We must use all diplomatic tools available, including engaging in direct bilateral and multilateral diplomacy. To do that, we must lift the ‘no contact’ policy and begin negotiations.”

According to Lee’s summary of the bill, the new envoy would be instructed to pursue “direct, sustained, bilateral, and multilateral negotiations with the government of Iran in order to prevent war and support human rights.”

I took it as a given. Who else had a long run as the President on TV when the book came out? That and some other factor fit Sheen perfectly.

As environmental loons go, Ed Begley Jr. is remarkably unobnoxious. He's like somebody who is intensely religious without inflicting it on others. He lives near Jerry Pournelle in Studio City and he's always friendly when I've been with Jerry on a dog walk, though I'm sure he knows there are areas where they deeply disagree.

Iowa State is the one with the real engineering and ag college.

Crappity, sorry about getting the school wrong, I forgot to go back and check to make sure I didn't have them confused.

Gah. I thought I had suppressed the six and a half hour university board meeting we had where we tried to figure out some way to integrate third party providers of online assignments with the school's grading system without violating any number of laws. Thanks for dredging up that memory. *eyetwitch* Seriously, though that's one of the reasons why I dug my heels in and didn't want to shift over to online stuff because it's just a nightmare waiting to happen with accidental information disclosure.

Honestly, the more I think about the story, the more alarming it is. Signs of depression? Who is doing that evaluation? How are they qualified? To whom is that information being reported at the university? Where is it being kept? Is this being disclosed when kids apply for jobs and/or grad school?

As you said, this should be a massive scandal but won't be.

241 Yeah amendments, it would be nice if they were teaching the kids about those in their American History class right now. Instead they are spending weeks and weeks discussing slavery. My son got an answer wrong because the question was phrased "slavery didn't exist until after Columbus discovered the New World true or false" he said false because we had discussed how throughout time slaves existed, like in Greek, Roman, and Egyptian culture. But, he got it wrong because they meant only slavery defined as oppressed Africans being brought to America to work for cruel whites.

Ask the teacher this: Who was the first slave under English law in North America and how did he get to be a slave?

You see, this isn't in the mists of time, we know his name because he lost a court case. And nobody ever teaches this.

Nobody.

His name was John Casor and you will never guess how he got to be a slave.

That would be news to all those Meso-American pre-Columbian cultures who enslaved their neighbors.

You should ask the teacher why she (racistly!) minimizes the heritage of her Latino students.

243 I wouldn't be surprised if Seth McFarlane actively pursued the Oscar hosting gig. There was a magazine article I read about him in People or something else like it that was in a dentist's waiting room. He appears to be a workaholic with an absurd number of projects at various stages on top of the stuff he already has going.

I haven't been able to look at any of his work since seeing an interview in which he stated he knew George W. Bush was a bad person because his parents were wealthy and Seth's parents were school teachers who had to struggle with expenses. At least, that is what he seemed to be saying. It didn't make much sense, although growing up without much may explain the intense work schedule.

When you teach a calculus lecture of 360 students, you do online homework.

When you say you dug your heels in, how many inches are we talking here?

In my neighborhood, the school teachers were the ones with the best houses. The school teachers' kids were always the ones who got little benefits and awards in school because, well, they knew each other.

He and Matt Damon have this chip on their shoulders where they think they grew up in some sort of abject poverty where their parents went through a painfully easy curriculum to get a comfortable, well-paying and incredibly secure job.

I'm quite sure the poor kid had all the toys he wanted. Me? I don't have any of the noblesse for all of his oblige. My parents didn't go to college at all.

Hell, try to find another research mathematician who went to American public schools.

246 The one good thing about the coming disasters is all the idiots who thought they had a better way.

It's not that I'm going to enjoy the Left dismembering the GOP. Just that I will enjoy seeing the GOP dismembered. Sic Semper Idiotus.

Mine too. Still is--the new subdivision by the country club with the huge houses? Almost all teachers and retired teachers. Two married teachers pull down a helluva pension.

And they get Christmas off.

Is this teacher aware that the Indians very actively practiced slavery in mostly the same regions as after the Europeans took control? The only reason they started bringing in Africans instead of buying from the local dealers is that malaria had found it way over along with the Europeans. Euros and Indians alike had a very high mortality rate while Africans, who'd lived with malaria for thousands of years, had much better resistance.

The term 'seasoned' in reference to a slave or worker referred to them being exposed to malaria and surviving, which meant future flare-ups of symptoms should be much less severe. Take away malaria and there would be very few people of recent African descent in the US today, as it is unlikely there would be much intentional immigration.

The book '1493' has pretty good coverage of this and points to other books more focused on the specific issue.

See, that's an appropriate use of online homework though you have my sympathies for still having to deal with multiple systems.

I was digging my heels in a good few inches because the university was trying to shift all departments over to online submission of all course assignments and hell to the no. It wasn't just me, many of the humanities instructors were also trying to emphasize that they wanted papers handed in during class hours to make sure that students actually came to class at least a few times. I have no idea how it all worked out because the program I was lecturing in was shut down as part of restructuring.

Proving once again that the average time between the posting of news so awful and mind-numbing you can barely wrap your mind around it... and the posting of a comment making a joke about it... approximately five seconds, three of which are consumed in typing and one in electronic distribution.

254 On February 28, 1993, a bunch of storm-troopers with obviously fake ATF marking stormed my compound where I lived with a bunch of religious colleagues. An
intense gun battle erupted, lasting nearly two hours. Six of my religious colleagues were killed and at least four of those fake ATF agents. After their failure to subdue our peaceful band of religious believers from our Constitutionally protected religious freedom and freedom to bear arms for our personal protection, they changed their markings to FBI, also obviously fake. The government did nothing to protect us for 50 days while these hooligans tortured us and denied us our Constitutional rights. Finally, these hooligans set fire to our peaceful religious compound resulting in the deaths of seventy-six men, women and
children, including me.
