While Rove would like to argue his “national nomination machine” will
protect Republicans from candidates like those who failed in Missouri
and Indiana, that isn’t the bigger story.

Republicans lost winnable senate races in Montana, North Dakota,
Ohio, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Florida. So in seven of the
nine losing races, the Rove model has no candidate-based explanation
for failure. Our problems are deeper and more complex than candidates.

By urban Democrat standards that would not even be all that fraudulent.

- "MTV Is Awfully Contrived"

And the "Jersey Shore" generation is awfully hopeless. Check out the unemployment stats for those under age 25.

19 From the story about the TX teen:

Perhaps the most controversial portion of the agreement is the parents’ decision to allow their daughter to marry the baby’s father, 16-year-old Evan Madison.

How in hell is that the most controversial portion of the agreement? I don't know of many states where the law DOESN'T state that children sixteen years of age or older can marry with parental consent. That's the LEAST controversial part of the agreement, to my mind. The most controversial is that such an agreement was even necessary.

I'd say the most controversial aspect is that this girl's parents were perfectly willing to cause their daughter physical and emotional harm to abort her baby. Without knowing all the details I can't say what the hell was going on with them, but that doesn't sound like a terribly happy home.

Winnable according to who? In Ohio I would've loved for Sherrod "Restraining Order" Brown to have lost but it just didn't happen. Josh Mandel was probably the best candidate that could've emerged from the Hatfield/McCoy version of the state Republican party's incestuous battles but he was still somewhat inexperienced for the job and it's not like the state has benefited from Fat Fuck Rove's master plan for a permanent Republican majority.

It seems VP Joe Biden has been whispering in the ears of selected Colorado representatives about gun control. If one of our dear Colorado reps mentions "get a double barreled shotgun" we will have evidence of a direct link to the VP (a 'smoking gun' if you will).

35 How in hell is that the most controversial portion of the agreement?

In the 21st century? The only people who still expect unplanned parents to get married before the baby's old enough to be in the wedding are the Amish.

Kids think they can't get married until they finish all their education and have amassed some assets/success to share with a potential spouse...they don't think that about having kids. Which is completely fucking backwards, but all the birth expenses will be paid by someone else and then they'll get paid to go to school as single moms, so why wait until you're married? (Especially because if no one wants to marry you, then you'll never be a mom and the whole world will shit all over you until you die. Ho-hum.)

Bird related OT story...continuation from the previous thread.

A friend and I used to shoot ground squirrels on cleared land near the earth station we worked at. They were all over the place. Problem was, they could see us coming, and most would duck into their holes before we could get close enough to start dispatching them. One day while we were out, we could see a golden eagle off in the distance....just circling around. Near enough to the ground squirrels to be a concern, but not really close enough to be a danger yet. Several males were standing up, watching the eagle, and chirping, and the other eagle that no one noticed, swooped right between my friend and I, glided about a foot and a half over the ground, and snatched one big fat male off his mound from behind. That furry little rat never knew it was coming. The eagles then flew off to enjoy their lunch.

The sneaky birds were hunting cooperatively.

I think the court decided that the parents were unreasonably coercing her to get an abortion by removing all methods of social interaction / education etc until she relents. It wouldn't be applicable in every case but I think this is fairly obvious.

I don't think cars and cell phones are the only ways of getting education or social interaction, and I think it's also reasonable for the parents to want to limit their daughters activity...she did clearly break their rules and put herself and the whole family in a bad situation. Mostly, I hate how this seems to make the teen entitled to adult decisions like getting married and to the privileges---that's what cars and phones are when you don't pay for them yourself---of being a teen in her parents home. Emancipation would be better if the girl is mature enough to take care of herself. If she's not, then the parents (or some other relative or foster parent, if the parents are really abusing her) should decide whether she gets a phone or a car or a curfew. Not tge court. By all means keep parents from forcing unneeded surgery on kids, but I really don't want the court saying that teens are entitled to cell phones at their parents expense.

98 Involuntary termination or a pink slip is the employee's departure at the hands of the employer. There are two basic types of involuntary termination, known often as being "fired" and "laid off." To be fired, as opposed to being laid off, is generally thought of to be the employee's fault, and therefore is considered in most cases to be dishonorable and a sign of failure (compare dishonorable discharge). You may now not continue.

"María de la Soledad Teresa O'Brien[1] (born September 19, 1966) is an American broadcast journalist. She is the anchor of CNN's morning news program Starting Point which premiered on January 2, 2012, and airs weekdays from 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. ET.[2]

Along with Early Start, Starting Point replaced American Morning, which aired from 2001 to 2011. O'Brien co-anchored American Morning from July 2003[3] to April 2007, with Miles O'Brien (no relation).

After leaving the morning anchoring position, O'Brien worked with the "In America" documentary unit on CNN."

And why on earth can the court order the parents to give their minor kid a car, a cell phone and permission to get married? I'm glad the baby will be protected and all, but this seems...wrong. And honestly if the parents really did try to drug their kid illegally, why even let them have custody? Why not just start the emancipation process, like I've seen with other pregnant teens?

I'm not sure there's much of a difference, since it says the court ordered them to pay the phone bill. The point is though that if she's still their kid, they should be allowed to ground her from the phone and from driving---those are reasonable parental decisions, forced elective surgeries are not. But really I don't know why they don't just remove her from the parents by emancipation or other means, that's what they usually do in these situations.

The only way it makes sense to meis if the girl had a job or someway to contribute her own money towards her phone and car, at least paying the insurance and gas. Then the parents arguably have less an ability to simply seize both those things. Additionally, since she's marrying the father of the child, I'd imagine that emancipation is at least a threat that was made.

The main issue seems to be that the parents threatened violence against her (threatening to induce a miscarriage or force her into the abortion office), and the courts are making sure that they can't follow through with those threats.

I want it to be illegal for any federal office holder (or anyone on their behalf) to solicit, accept or spend any contribution from anybody. Taking contributions while in office is a clear conflict of interest.

Challengers should be allowed to accept any amount from any U.S. source, as long as it is disclosed. These funds should be collected and dispersed by an independent accounting firm subject to audit.

Office holders should receive an amount equal to the highest sum raised by the challenger from the treasury. This payment would also go to the independent firm who would track every expenditure.

As I have written, so it should be.

I didn't have cable as kid in the 80s, so I never really got into the whole MTV thing. All I know of MTV I got from some early 90s exposure that almost completely turned me off mainstream music forever. They've only gotten worse from there. *sigh*

Why is it that the big hospitals are always located in the worst slums? The hospital that my wife gets most of her treatments at is located in some of the worst slums within a 100 mile radius.

Same thing with the Medical University of SC, except that they do have "Old Charleston" close by.

176 I seriously cannot believe someone actually suggested peeing and vomiting (so easy to do on command, right?) As defense against rape. Yeah, a person who wants to humiliate hurt and degrade a person in the most vicious way will really stop if you humiliate yourself a little first. Leftists hate women, they really really do.

182 Mossad agent Prisoner X?

Do you remember the story about a Mossad agent who was arrested for treason and committed suicide in custody in Israel, Prisoner X? He was born in Australia and immigrated to Israel. Well more from the Jerusalem Post, via Der Speigel

According to Der Spiegel, Australian Jews are particularly attractive to the Mossad because of a quirk in the law: Australians are allowed to change their first and last names once a year, a simple way to adopt a new identity.
In Zygier's youth, he reportedly became involved with the "Community Security Group" in Melbourne, a kind of Jewish community defense team. According to Der Spiegel, groups like this one are often linked to Mossad, and this was probably close to the time of Zygier's recruitment, as well as "Paul Y." and "David Z."
Zygier emigrated to Israel after he completed his education, and Paul Y., and David Z., allegedly did as well, all holding Israeli and Australian citizenship. This lead to their recruitment by Mossad, said Der Spiegel.
Meanwhile, the three men applied for new names and Australian passports. Der Spiegel also said Ben Zygier became Benjamin Burrows or Benjamin Allen, and Y. and Z. changed their names too.
According to the report, in 2009 their repeated name changes sparked the interest of Australian authorities and when Zygier handed them his old passports, it was filled with Iranian entry visas. Reportedly, Paul Y. had a passport containing visas from from Syria, Iran, Egypt and Dubai, while David Z. had spent time in Iran. In 2004, David Z. allegedly sought help from the Australian consulate in Tehran

Prisoner X was probably part of the group that keeps blowin up Iranian scientists, and he tried to "defect" in Dubai and alert the Arab world. That is why he was arrested for treason and they won't talk about it.

185 update: white stuff continues falling. cats are freaked.

'Way back in the early 70s when I might have been in college, an acquaintance asked me to walk her across campus one night. As we talked about trust, threats, and self-defense, suddenly out of nowhere, she produces a foot-long hatpin. That, to me at the time, was a nasty looking bit of weaponry. Sure, it's not a gun, but it beats nothing. Extra concealable, too!

Why is it that the big hospitals are always located in the worst slums?

Easy. A century ago, when most medical schools/hospitals were first established, they were in upscale areas. But over time, the FSA moved in, whites moved out, crime skyrocketed. Wash, rinse, repeat.

It's not a poverty issue; it's a character issue.
