1 Good Morning Morons. Today is Wednesday, February 20, 2013. On this day in 1472 Orkney and Shetland were pawned by Norway to Scotland in lieu of a dowry for Margaret of Denmark who married the King of Scotland to settle a feud. Margaret was 13 at the time and she died at 30.

8 Hackers hit Apple computers now using the Java plug in. Folks let’s face it. This continued war between security software and hackers has to come to an end. What needs to happen is to make this kind of crime a serious felony with hard jail time and the prisons most resembling the Black Hole of Calcutta. Personally I would prefer the death penalty with no appeal after breaking their kneecaps but some may balk at that.

In 2009, the Obama administration gave $24.8 million in stimulus tax credits to GE’s famous “Appliance Park” factory compound.

In 2010, Appliance Park won a $2.5M stimulus grant.

57 Hello, 'rons and 'ronettes, and thanks for the morning briefing, Vic. Hope you all have a wonderful day ahead of you. Grab a cup of coffee or tea and settle down for a moment while I tell you a story:

Besides "Sodom" and "Tinseltown," another nickname for Hollywood is "The Boulevard of Broken Dreams." Because for every Douglas Fairbanks or Gary Cooper or Claudette Colbert or Elizabeth Taylor, there are others who, for one reason or another, never make it, either because they just don't have what it takes - Ginny Simms, say, or Jack Beutel - or because they never got a break, like poor Peg Entwistle. Some people seem to have great careers ahead of them, but tragedy overtakes them; doomed Martha Mansfield, burned to death on the set of the movie that would make her a star, is one story I've told you. Then there are the others who drink deeply of success, but then lose it all and never come back. Clara Kimball Young was one such, as was the "First Movie Star," Florence Lawrence. When her silent days were over, Marie Prevost struggled for years to find work until death turned her into a joke and a carefree Fatty Arbuckle's loose weekend party at the St. Francis Hotel in San Francisco buried his career.

In his day, John Bowers, though not a top-rank leading man, was still a well-known actor, clocking screen time with Mary Pickford in Hulda From Holland, Dorothy Donnelly in Madame X (later a 1966 tearjerker for Lana Turner), Pauline Frederick in Roads of Destiny and the "too beautiful to live" girl, Barbara La Marr in Quincy Adams Sawyer. He went through a number of studios such as Goldwyn, Pathe and United Artists, each time leaving behind a reputation as an easy-to-work-with, consummate professional. He might not have been a Wally Reid or Doug Fairbanks, but he was a good, solid, firm-chinned hero. While making his way in Hollywood, Bowers married the delicious Marguerite De La Motte, a petite brunette who had studied dance with Pavlova and starred with Fairbanks in The Mark of Zorro and The Three Musketeers. The two appeared together in several films, had what seemed to be a happy marriage and were making a comfortable, if not, spectacular, living in Hollywood.

Bowers did stumble a little when he tested - and was rejected - for the title role of 1927s Ben Hur, but when you look at his picture, you can see he really didn't have the star quality the role demanded. It was all right - he was still working.

And then came sound.

Like so many others, Bowers' voice simply didn't record. He tried, in trifles like Say It With Songs and Mounted Fury, but they were only small, supporting roles. He lost his life savings investing in a flying school, became an alcoholic and watched helplessly as De La Motte divorced him. After 1931, the only way Bowers could get on to a movie set was to take a studio tour.

In November of 1936, he heard that his old pal, director Henry Hathaway, was directing a Gary Cooper movie - Souls At Sea - near Santa Catalina. He rented a sailboat and headed out, only to find that all parts in the film had been cast. Bowers walked back down to his sailboat, talking stock of his life, then cast off into the bay. A few days later, his body washed up onto the beach at Malibu.

A sad story, of course. But Hollywood has dozens of them. Why am I telling you about John Bowers? Because, shortly after his death (or suicide; no-one really knows. Bowers was reported to have once told a friend that he was going to kill himself by "getting into a boat and sailing into the sunset."), Selznick International Pictures premiered A Star Is Born. And director William Wellman and writer Dorothy Parker knew both Bowers and his attempt to regain the stardom that was once his. So, while Hollywood history has always said that the plot of Star is based on the doomed marriage of Barbara Stanwyck and Frank Fay, the film's penultimate scene (SPOILER ALERT!), where alcoholic actor Norman Maine commits suicide by walking into the raging surf certainly does have an echo of the death of lonely, lost John Bowers.

Here's Bowers: http://tinyurl.com/b8csfxh

Here's De La Motte: http://tinyurl.com/autyaet

And, because I like her, here's Barbara La Marr: http://tinyurl.com/awqextc

80 Good Stuff MPPPP, you are becoming a treasure. I hope you are saving these stories, put them together and it could be a great read.

Thanks, OSP. The thought had occurred to me, but I'm leery of trying it. You see, none of the work I've done is original. I'm merely taking already existing anecdotes, or stories from magazines or excerpts from books and retelling them, with a tweak or two here and there to make them my own. Now, that may fly here on this Smart Military Blog*, but whether that would fly in the real world, I don't know.

Also, anyone who is interested in Hollywood from after, say 1965, would find nothing in my book, since I don't really have a lot, nor care a lot, about the modern cinema.

But I have thought about it. If any morons with real-world publishing experience can chime in, that'd be great. BTW, I mentioned on the overnight thread that Friday's story will be about Errol Flynn. I haven't decided on a star or movie for tomorrow, though, so I'm open to suggestions.

116 Here's the deal with the teachers:

A lot of them are really good people who try hard, but they're forced to work longer hours for students who don't want to be there. They're also forced into situations of dealing with students with serious personal problems, for which they are not trained. If you had to play social worker to about 1/3 of the people under you while still doing your normal job, you'd be doing pretty crappily as well.

That said, the solution of higher pay is utterly wrong. Teachers are already overwhelmed with work, so paying them more isn't going to make their work any more efficient or effective.

The solution is to change the special ed laws so that it's easier to get the problem kids out of the classroom. I guarantee you, it would cut teachers' work in half instantly and free up lots of time and energy to actually do thigns for students who care.

I have. Very short story: Arbuckle, after finishing a grueling round of shooting, went to SF to blow off some steam. During the course of the party, a young girl / part-time good-time girl named Virginia Rappe was injured, but nobody knows how. She died in hospital, probably as a result of abdominal trauma and infection suffered from an abortion (she had had multiple). A woman named Maude Delmont telegraphed Matthew Brady, the SF DA, that they had a chance to make some money off of Arbuckle’s plight. Roscoe (no-one who knew him called him “Fatty”) went through three trials, finally being acquitted in the third (it was very obvious that evidence had been faked, perjured or lost), but the new production censor, Will Hays, decreed that none of Arbuckle’s films could ever be shown again.

I know I wrote about the case somewhat recently; anybody with good search-fu can go through Ace’s archives to find the post. As far as reading about it, the Wiki entry is good as far as it goes, so you can start there.

145 Morning, all!

Don't know why, but I'm terribly depressed this morning. Does anyone have any good news or happy happenstance to share? I could really use the cheer.

My lone smile this morning came while I was driving to work and had to stop and wait for a whole flock of wild turkeys to cross the road. That in itself isn't unusual, but the cute part was that one of them clearly didn't like the feel of the wet sand on the road on her feet, so she kept hop-skipping across to try and reach the other side without touching the pavement. I was worried at first she might be hurt, but no; just picky about where she stepped. The other turkeys just strutted across the road like usual, clearly thinking, "Geez, Bernice, would you get a move on?" Adorable.

Oh! That was actually my SECOND smile. The first was also during my morning commute when I saw an itty-bitty European Starling sharing some bird food in a neighbor's driveway with four huge crows. The starling looked totally at home, like it didn't have a care in the world despite the fact that the other birds could easily have curbstomped it and gobbled IT instead of the bird food. The crows didn't seem to care, either, though I'm sure the presence of the starling's entire flock roosting in a nearby tree would be enough to quell any murderous intent on their part.

I wish I'd had my camera - would have made a great picture.

Gee, there's a big fucking surprise. Do we have any word on the names of his victims? Particularly the first one? I'm sure the carjacking victims were just innocent passersby, but what're the odds the first one he killed somehow offended his dearly held Muzzie sensibilities. Since he killed her in his parents home -- where he also lived -- I'm sure she was a relative.

161 Oh, MWR, I'm so sorry. I know how much depression hurts.

I don't have any good news, but I can tell you a Sam Goldwyn story:

Goldwyn was notorious for mangling the language - "a verbal contract isn't worth the paper it's printed on" is one of his best-known, as well as responding to a merger offer by sneering, "Gentlemen, you can include me out." One day, it seems, he was in the projection room watching the rushes of a new movie and wasn'tsure aboutit. "What do you boys think? Is it any good? I should drop it, right?" he snapped, and kept right on talking.

One executive tried to interrupt the flow of words, but Goldwyn fixed him with a stare. "Don't say yes until I've finished talking!"

162 A quote from the magazine limit article.

Constitutional lawyers and some conservatives generally believe that
limiting magazine size falls within the boundaries of recent Supreme
Court decisions on gun rights.

AND

Evidence suggests that a ban on magazine size would indeed reduce the
number of those killed in mass shootings, largely because of the
difficulty in changing clips, particularly among amateur gun users.

What is an amateur gun user? Someone who doesn't get paid to use a gun?

I've seen groups of small birds pestering larger birds, too. Strength in numbers! And if it keeps the crows away from the smaller birds' eggs, all the better.

I do love my little family of neighborhood crows, though. I know they can be ugly, mean, smelly birds, but they're also ridiculously smart. I've named the three I usually see Heckle, Jeckle and Moe. Lately there have been three or four others, who I assume are juveniles, who I've nicknamed Flo, Larry, Curly and Shemp. I can't tell any of them apart so I don't know who is who, but I like to say good morning to them as I pass by.

Yesterday our front yard was bird central, actually. It was crazy! I think because the wind was so strong all weekend all the birds were taking the opportunity to get out and stretch their wings yesterday without being knocked ass over tea kettle. A whole flock of fat robins was whirling around from front yard to front yard. I saw a couple of bluejays, two Downy woodpeckers, at least one white-breasted nuthatch (I actually think it was two), and a cardinal. And when I got to work I could hear our resident mockingbird kicking up his regular hullabaloo.

I've been yearning for spring to arrive since OCTOBER. Looks like it's really, genuinely on its way!

Bluejays have an incredible range of sounds that mean different things; I've heard a melodic sound from one that might have been related to "I'm in the mood". I once saw a cardinal tee off on a bluejay to drive it away; doubtlessly from a nest it was ready to rob.

Male cardinals are very territorial and will unload on any other male redbird that violates its no fly zone. We get cardinal nests in our front and back yards; the fledglings grow up quickly and both parents help them learn to fly.

I was surprised by just how many different sounds bluejays make. You think you know everything, then you realize you don't know squat. They're so nice to watch, too -- these bright little flurries of color against the otherwise grim backdrop of bare winter trees. It's refreshing.

We had a nesting pair of cardinals in my yard a few years ago, but they haven't been back for a while. I was quite surprised to see that cardinal the other day. I know they're very territorial, and by gum, our yard seems to be EVERY bird's territory. It would be nice to have them around again, just because they're such lovely birds to look at. But if they were to drive away some of my favorite residents -- like the catbirds who show up in the summer and the cowbirds who crop up in the fall -- I'd be quite disappointed.

went outside, if that particular bird was around he would come over and

hang out me.

In case I ever have the opportunity, what did you feed it?

It was learning to fly, had fallen to the ground and couldn't get back into the tree.
It was a male and REALLY big. I wore rubber gloves and put him back into the tree. He got airborne with the extra height and didn't fail again.

209 MWR - when I first bought a young dove couple took up residence in a large pin oak outside my 2nd story bedroom window. Watched them grow older together. Then one year I drove in and a blueish was attacking their nest. Kicking newborns out of the nest. I was so pissed.
And they haven't been back.

Bluebird or Bluejay? Usually Bluebirds are victims of nest robbers.

215 Bluejays, schmuejays, I've had a conversation with a crow... In English.
.
They and Ravens are far and away the smartest birds. They always used to drop a bunch of walnuts at the entrance to the parking lot just before closing.
