Retracted and Edited: Hilary Mantel and Kate Middleton

Eh, I don't care about Kate Middleton, and I certainly don't care about this of a writer, but (redacted, here's the link).

I've actually now skimmed the offending article, which I only previously saw quoted, and I think it's the British tabloid media making a scandal out of nothing.

The essay is a sharp-tongued critique on the image-making apparatus of the royal family (and royals through history) as well as the image-making apparatus of courtiers and media. It's really not about Kate Middleton specifically, though that is a jumping off point for the essay.

Apologies, story retracted, sorry I posted this without reading the essay, which can be found here.

Note the essay is still negative and critical; and yes, she does bring up a lot of Stepford Bride imagery regarding Middleton. But the object is not really Kate Middleton, nor her looks.

Again, not exactly.

It strikes me overall as a perfectly fair essay to write -- bitter and tart, sure, but completely in-the-bounds -- and not one which should be jumped up into some Crime Against the State.

91 And this is about the book that won-"Wolf Hall"

Into this impasse steps Thomas Cromwell. Son of a brutal blacksmith, a political genius, a briber, a bully and a charmer, Cromwell has broken all the rules of a rigid society in his rise to power, and is prepared to break some more. Rising from the ashes of personal disaster - the loss of his young family and of Wolsley, his beloved patron - he picks his way deftly through a court where ‘man is wolf to man’. Pitting himself against parliament, the political establishment and the papacy, he is prepared to reshape England to his own and Henry’s desires.

From one of our finest living writers, Wolf Hall is that very rare thing: a truly great English novel, one that explores the intersection of individual psychology and wider politics. With a vast array of characters, and richly overflowing with incident, it peels back history to show us Tudor England as a half-made society, moulding itself with great passion and suffering and courage.

Oh my.

Over at the blaze, there's a story of a gun stash found in Cali. Here's the list of stuff found:

...the bounty found with a search warrant on property in Garberville, Calif., was “one of the largest hauls that we’ve ever seen.”

When you take a look at the list below and you’ll see why.

111 guns, including a MG 42 caliber WWII Machine gun with a full belt of ammunition
Ballistic vests
Tactical holsters
Ammo, magazines
117 pounds of marijuana
42 grams hashish
4 grams of methamphetamine
40 vehicles
A tractor
A trailer
All-terrain vehicles
Chainsaws
Concrete cutter
Air compressor
$12,000 cash
Jewelry

115 I've always somewhat marveled how relatively uninteresting and unattractive women with an overblown sense of self-importance and, shall we say, over-indulgent lifestyle write tomes from mental institutions defining who is, and who isn't attractive.

It's as if they live in some world that's a creation of their own puny minds and they whimsically create their own version of Utopia, oddly based on their own interpretation of reality and social mores.

By the way, she threw stones at Kate first. So don't feel bad about throwing a few donkey punches. So to speak.

For the love of all that is holy, and for the faith of anything close to evolutionary science, I have to believe erg is an anomalous biological dead end to which neither God nor nature would tolerate additional copies.

On the 'balance sheet' is somthing called 'Goodwill'... its a measurment of things like brand name recognition...

GM took a 27 BILLION hit on their 'Goodwill'.... by going bankrupt.... but what sad is that this is considered a Loss... and thus.... a Tax Writeoff.... so although GM says they have a few billion in profit (as Obama likes to tout)... they actualy had a REAL 3 Billion Loss... then a 27 Billion loss of Reputation... for which they get a 30 Billion PLUS tax writeoff.... which they will keep on the books...

Ergo... GM paid no Taxes last year.... and will not for years in the future... because of a voluntary hit to their own reputation...

I had no idea this was even Possible.... let alone LEGAL under our F'd up Tax law.

I'm not done with the book yet, but pretty close. As some of the above comments tip you, you have to be open to the idea that Cromwell wasn't the Prot Torquemada.

The title really is more characterizing the people around Henry than the doings at Wolf Hall--which were a little fucked up. And the book also has a cast list up front, which I know means I'll have to keep looking back to remind myself which pasty-faced suckup is which.

273 I think (constitutional) monarchy is just fine. It may be "irrational," but then, so are most of the things that sweeten life. Like sticking candles into cakes, singing a stupid song, making a wish, and blowing the candles out.

Britain has a long history and the royal family line provides a unifying element that ties the present to the past.

I like having the head of state and head of government be different. One is ceremonial, one is political.
Especially in our modern age when everything is so politicized, it's nice to have a neutral figurehead to admire or to laugh at. And when that leader is born (chosen by pure chance) rather than elected, s/he doesn't represent any particular viewpoint.

298 Yeah, it was sad how Diana died but the media coverage here was over the top. And you will remember that Mother Theresa's death a few days later was given relatively little attention.

Diana was also a stick figure, as Kate now is. Kate was slim but at a healthy weight before. Wonder if she's trying to be like Williams's mom. Pure speculation, sorry. But Kate is pretty still.

301 However, I am of the opinion that Middleton f***ed her way into status,
rather like a Kardashian but regrettably without video. Being critical
of that isn't the same as being envious.

"I saw Kate becoming a jointed doll on which certain rags are hung,"
Mantel said in a lecture at the British Museum in London earlier this
month in which she spoke about her changing views about the princess.

"She was a shop-window mannequin, with no personality of her own,
entirely defined by what she wore. These days she is a mother-to-be, and
draped in another set of threadbare attributions."

No, that's envy right there, dressed it up in highfalutin' "look at what an intellectual I am" terms, because she can't admit to herself what a bitch she's being, but envy just the same.

325 I want to make it clear that I agreed with her assessment of how the whole royalty thingie results in Kate being reduced to a breeder for the royal family and other superficial things. But there was no need to go overboard criticizing Kate herself, who seems to be a nice person.

One can criticize royalty without making it person.

And yes, I agree that her breeder attack may arise from bitterness about not being able to have kids.

I too am childless and think I probably won't ever have kids although I would like to have some. But I'm not going to begrudge other women their celebration of childbearing. In fact I always get excited when someone I know gets pregnant. Because I think it is a beautiful thing.

Not saying that Ace isn't on the money about the proximate cause of Hilary Mantel's critique of Middleton (because it's pretty clear that he is), but there is another, underlying cause - the tremendous envy and resentment towards any type of success/fame/achievement/acclaim that is, and long has been, endemic in the U.K.

I suspect it's a legacy of the class system, but it's a very real and pernicious thing over there - and one of the reasons (besides absurd tax burdens) that so many Brit celebrities opt to relocate elsewhere. It takes a bit of getting used to when one sees it - otherwise very personable and down-to-earth folks getting themselves worked up into a dark rage over one of their fellow Britons having a turn of good luck or attaining some rewarding goal, as if that somehow took something from them. But it's there, just like the "reading" that goes on when one Brit meets another to determine their place in the social hierarchy and how they are consequently to be treated.

Hilary Mantels books are worth reading; but her looks would melt down a four hour Cialis erection. So Hilary, I'll read your books--they're well worth reading. But as your opinions about how modern attractive women look, I'll repeat the advice the Italian women gave the Pope about contraception. "You no playa da game, you no maka the rules!"
