Apparently Rape Culture is Alive and Well

Since somebody added a comment on to a single anti-rape poster. Oh the humanity!!

A flyer for a New School University screening of the new Jennifer Baumgardner documentary "It Was Rape," which chronicles eight women's experiences of being raped, was defaced by someone on the New School's campus. The flyer - which was defaced with the phrase "And It Felt Great" - was spotted by a student in one of the campus buildings, taken down and then handed over to the school's wellness center. That's where it was then passed on to Rhiannon Auriemma, a graduate student at the university and a peer health advocate at the school's Student Health Services.

Auriemma has a degree in Women's Studies and works on the university's Yes Means Yes campaign, which aims to engage student voices around sexual assault while educating the New School community around issues of rape culture and sexual violence. She believes the flyer incident needs to be examined in the greater context of rape culture. And though it may, on its face, seem like a small agression, as Auriemma explains it, "Because we are socialized within a culture that excuses and, at time, supports, gender based and sexual violence, micro-aggressions such as the defacing of the It Was Rape flyer take place." And, she notes, we need to be vigilant - even in places and within institutions that we presume to be safe spaces. "While The New School is a liberal institution that attempts to subvert larger, structural oppressions, we are not exempt from the reality of these oppressions," she said.

What's also alive and well is the utter humorlessness and clueless self-seriousness of the Women's Studies culture.

So just out of curiousity I look up if it has a phobia name and it does. So I go to show her my phone as this site: http://tinyurl.com/ba6f6xb And when I turned it to her it hadn't finished loading so I didn't see the picture at the top, but she did and recoiled like I was putting a spider in front of her. Posted by: is the future here yet? at February 18, 2013 10:49 PM (Q2wni)

81 Yeah, so Yglesias' brilliant point is that in some time in the past, the British, when they were the world's empire, issued "consols" which were basically bonds with no maturity date. People would buy them and then just collect the interest forever, because apparently there was never any doubt that the government wouldn't be around to default on its debt. So Yglesias thinks we should do the same thing. Except that (a) the British abandoned this practice and (b) no government has ever been as fuckin' broke as we are, so there is no way that these things could be sold with anything less than usury interest rates. He's a fuckin' hack. I don't have any sort of degree in economics and even I can see through his dumbshittery.

96 Now that Mrs. Muldoon has gone to bed I can tell a funny story about her. In nursing school she was learning about how to report out the microscope findings on a urinalysis. 111 Actually someone earlier posted the "how people perceive time" video, and it really was profound, I think there is a lot of left-right truth to that video

leftists tend to be people who think in the present

rightists tend to be people who think in the future

so leftists are people who tend to focus only on current material needs and dismiss any concern about moral hazard or looming debt crises in the future

but rightists are concerned about the long-term concerns, and so that is why they get a bad rap in a culture that is also mostly short-term oriented.

Yeah, so Yglesias' brilliant point is that in some time in the past, the British, when they were the world's empire, issued "consols" which were basically bonds with no maturity date. People would buy them and then just collect the interest forever, because apparently there was never any doubt that the government wouldn't be around to default on its debt. So Yglesias thinks we should do the same thing.

Tell Ygleisas to put his entire savings into these things, or STFU.

Yeah- my wife's father was murdered a few years ago. The likely culprit still hangs around the vicinity. There's no way I would give up my right to defend my self and my family. Just wouldn't be prudent. The scumbag was a convicted felon who had no problems with possessing a gun illegally. I often wonder what might have happened if my F-I-L had been armed that day. Might not have made a difference, but then again.

@156 As far as Obama being rated one of the greatest by idiots--- depends on how the economy goes. Of course, the media will continue to work mightily to see that no one notices if we end up with hyperinflation or a depression. Some on the left dream of revolution, if so let's hope the MSM are the first loaded into the tumbrils.

I think the media are the truly soulless unprincipled ones. You can't blame politicians for being power mad. But the mainstream media are the enablers. They now comfort and protect the powerful and afflict the powerless. We're living in an alternate bizarro universe.

35 or so years ago, I girl I knew very well was raped one Sunday afternoon walking from the college library to her car. It messed her up in the head for several years.
Another girl I knew(well, +30 year old woman) was raped in her own house, when she came home some stalker was waiting for her.
Guns aren't for everyone, but if a woman was at risk, they should have the right to carry. Rape is ugly and cruel, and no real man would ever do something like that. You would have every right to plug that unspeakable scum dead if you felt threatened.

205 So, I keep in touch with my college teaching cohort via the net. We have the occasional private group discussion with one of us acting as moderator. Tonight's topic, as it has been quite often since Newtown, is the boomsticks. The convo was going okay until someone said that "well regulated" in the 2nd Amendment meant they wanted stringent gun control. I say it means "working properly/calibrated", get called a bullshitter, then link Oxford dictionary to prove my point (and lo and behold, 1700's speak for "working properly"). 5 minutes later, all my posts get deleted.

Now I'm debating if I succumb to the temptation in the next debate to either delete all the things I disagree with or edit them to something like "you're wrong because I suck dicks". Normally I wouldn't because I think censorship is bullshit, but since we're having censorship against the stipulated rules anyway, does the moron horde think I should get some payback to illustrate a point?

I'd always been weary of the militant feminists. The definitive BING moment for me overall was early in college. Had to go to <pick your lib topic for sensitivity> special guest speaker events twice for Ethnic Studies 101. I picked the feminist speakers because they seemed the least objectionable overall. They had a couple of the modern leaders of the movement up there, but I can't recall now which ones. My first one they talked about the middle east stuff. Basically how things weren't perfect in America, but focus needed to shift abroad to the developing world too, and they talked a lot about the middle east and clitoral circumcision. Then 9/11 happened. The event afterwords, I saw people get kicked out for asking about and quoting the same ladies' earlier statements.

You're right. I'm in an unusual position for a conservative/libertarian. I work in a non-profit human services organization. I talk with rape victims on a near-daily basis. I counsel women who're being stalked or otherwise abused on a near-daily basis. I'm not allowed to suggest to them that they think about purchasing a firearm.

I do it, mind you. But I have to be very careful and indirect in the way I do it.

Probably a bit more than just that involved as well.

The Academy has become Ground Zero for the Left. There is this malevolent strain of PC on campuses that feels the need to constantely re-assert itself by finding even the slightest hint of anti-whatever near-by and create a ZOMGBBQ! controversy. And after many Op-Eds by the kow-towed student newspaper, after the sit-ins, and Awareness Weeks, nothing has changed except for a larger, more oleagenous sense of self-righteousness for the Lefties All-On Board.

The idea that rape is evil isn't an owned property of the Left; but they sure as shit own this Soviet enviroment of PC.

And all the while, the nation that was their hope, the nation for which they left everything and everyone they ever knew, slips closer and closer toward a hybridized Bladerunner meets 1984 meets England at its worst.

I remember receiving tips in 7th and 8th grade about how to thwart a rape and peeing, vomiting, eating grass....anything gross was included.

Rape isn't about sex, it's about violence, so the gross stuff doesn't make you less sexy, it just throws off the game. It's unexpected and although he might not mind if the victim is covered in piss, he likely does not want to be covered in it himself.

Of course, all these things were advice to an underage girl.

Met a Russian guy - they were always Russians, in those days - and in that sort of demotic Russian I'd learned/picked up living there, managed to make the purchase. $400 - and this in the '90's, mind you - for a Toakarev and a box of shells to go with it. We seal the deal and I ask if there's anything else I need to know.

"He" is a figurehead -- "I serve as a blank screen on which people of vastly different political stripes project their own views." He's too stupid and narcissistic to even realize that all these "different political stripes" were all-Left, all the time. Muslims think, "he's pro-Muslim"; blacks think, "he's black"; the poor thinks, "he'll get us free stuff"; college students say, "he sound just like our professors, he must be so smart".....but the right says, "he's another goddamned red-diaper leftist."

The real lefties don't trust him either -- which is why he's got "minders" like Valjar.

"...and that is both its boon and its bane. The downside of the internet's egalitarianism is that people who have no social peers in their own lives -- because, most likely, they are insane or too repulsive in character to attract real-life friends -- flock to the internet. They've alienated everyone they've ever known in real-life; now it's time to try out their off-putting schtick on the millions of new potential victims at their fingertips."

See That is the BEST THING about Ace of Spades. We meet on the same flat battlefield. The freaks, the savants and the sages. The Red Staters and the Huff Po fakers. Sink or Swim. Long bows or ...er..reverse compound or whatever.

I assume you are addressing those of us who were creeped out by the poster comment.

Actually, now I feel bad for taking offense. I know nobody meant any harm. It was just weird to have such a creepy comment referred to as funny, although Maet has graciously clarified his thought. And like I said, I got all riled up over at the Fox site commenting about Salazar.

I'm not sure how to express this. I'm not mad or hurt by what you or anyone else said, so please don't worry about it. (I was annoyed about how Maet's comment seemed to refer to it as "humor," but like I said, he has clarified this.) I know where you are coming from, and I trust you as a good person.

So again, please don't worry about it.

(I'm not very good at this -- just trying to let you know everything's okay from my end.)

323 The handwriting on that flier is very likely to be a fully grown adult's (because this is gadget days and very few kids are developing printing that's personalized or efficient like e.g. the d and G and a on there, which are a practiced speed-printer's d and G and a) whose sex isn't deducible (because writing legibly is more a girl thing and capitalizing the wrong words is more a guy thing and making open/stylized dots on punctuation is totally a girl thing and inconsistency among repeated characters is totally a guy thing and...) and when you find readable writing on a vertical surface, you should probably look for a culprit who's accustomed to writing readably on vertical surfaces, like say for example a teacher. Or teacher's aid. Especially if it happened in a school.

Or you look for someone who did it before that surface was made vertical. Like whoever put it up. Because hey, look at that--why is it rolled like somebody was sneakin' it around at the bottom of a pile of rolled things? Well, maybe it was just at the bottom of the rolled pile of them and then later it got written on...so lightly that the pressure of writing--that big hot wet rapin' hand slowly sliding across it--didn't visibly change how rolled it is on that side. For whatever reason.

Point: maybe wait before deciding exactly what kind of people-you-already-hate need to all go to all the hells for not having done this arguably annoying thing which may be a different thing than you want to think it is. Or not.

Sometimes the weapons charges are dropped in a bargain including pleas to other crimes, it's a common charge to throw out for all criminals. One of the NRA's big complaints is, what is the point of more laws if you almost never use the ones you have?

C'mon, if you think I knew how to disable the security in the site's main CMS ... seriously, I'm at a "grandmother" level (or worse) when it comes to using the web. Don't need a CMS for this other thing, copy-paste-drool is more than sufficient.

Tried doing it myself in Wordpress and, well, looks worse than craptacular.

I find the anti-Americanism in Europe to generally be ill-informed and reflexive, but it's louder at the Garaunid.

(PS, the mis-spellings of Gruadain are because the Naudriag used to be famous for their mis-spellings.)

378 How many rounds per week or month to become proficient enough to compete in a USPSA match, assuming one is not bad with a pistol to start with? These days, it seems like it would be cheaper to take up polo or yacht racing than that.

Just show up with:

pistol
a minimum of 3 mags
holster
mag carrier
decent belt
enough ammo, locally 150 rounds is gen enough
eye and ear pro

I'll give you a hint -- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bourgeoise -- "Historically, the mediæval French word bourgeois denoted the inhabitants of the bourgs (walled market-towns), the craftsmen, artisans, merchants, and others, who constituted "the bourgeoisie", they were the socio-economic class between the peasants and the landlords, between the workers and the owners of the means of production." More or less, caliber is the width of the bullet. Anything expressed in terms of millimeters (like, 9mm) is pretty straightforward. Other sizes are fraction-of-an-inch (for example, .45 is 45/100 of an inch.)

Posted by: MINEMINEMINE!! at February 19, 2013 01:16 AM (nqXsF)

Literally? Yes. In reality? Slightly more complicated.

Generally speaking caliber is the diameter of the bullet, but a *lot* of the time it's not that accurate (a .38 and a .357 are both .357 in diameter). The millimeter numbers are generally from Metric Europe, but still usually but not always are the caliber (9mm is 9mm or .356"). Some millimeter calibers are from the US (10mm auto) and inchers from Europe (older ones, .416 Rigby and .375 Holland and Holland).

Major exception - Shotguns are based on a gauge system relating to the weight of calibrated spheres - the lower the number, the larger the barrel. 12 ga is about .73 caliber.

*Usually* millimeter to inches is the normal conversion.

There are more oddities, such as .45 Auto being .451" in diameter and .45 Colt (Cowboy guns) being .454". Also, normal everyday 9mm parabellum is 9.19mm (the latter being case length), there are also 9x21 and two different unrelated 9x23 calibers - but to make it even worse, the Russian 9x18 caliber is a different *diameter*, .363" instead of .356.

Basically it's a half-ass hacked-together system of measurement.

@411 But are they the old style hippies who were anti-establishment or the new hippies who are pro-establishment (statists in other words.)

Remember way back when when the students took over the campuses and the dean's office? Can you imagine today's students doing that now that the former revolutionaries run things in academia and are now The Man.

Today's students are no longer anti-establishment because the establishment is perceived as non-conformist and so the students conform. The irony is so thick it can't be cut with a machete.

446 404 OK, I'm a gun newbie. What does caliber mean, is it diameter? When things are referred to as millimeter, how does that transpose to caliber. Journolist needs to know.

Posted by: MINEMINEMINE!! at February 19, 2013 01:16 AM (nqXsF)

More or less, caliber is the width of the bullet. Anything expressed in terms of millimeters (like, 9mm) is pretty straightforward. Other sizes are fraction-of-an-inch (for example, .45 is 45/100 of an inch.)
Posted by: Steck

Plus! Please remember caliber does not equal destructive power!!

A .22 is almost the same width of a .223 but the .223 is a rifle round has much more lead and powder in the cartridge. Rifle vs pistol rounds are a simple thing that the anti's tend to conflate.

Further, a .223 caliber (aka evil black rifle round) is one of the smaller rifle rounds available.

A benign looking hunting rifle in .30-06 will have much more foot lbs of power than a .223 , IIRC. *caveated* heavily.

MINEMINEMINE:

Caliber, when discussing handguns and rifles, refers to the "nominal" bullet diameter.

.45 ACP (Automatic Colt Pistol, for the 1911) and .45 Long Colt (very different; for a six-gun) both use a bullet that is about .452" in diameter.

.44 Special and .44 Magnum use bullets that are .429" in diameter.

"Why" the .44 is actually .429 I don't know; could be marketing, could be to avoid mistakenly swapping bullets when reloading, ....

Click over to : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_handgun_cartridges

to get all sorts of details on just about every cartridge ever marketed.

Caliber, when talking about very much larger guns, like Army field guns and guns on ships, refers to the barrel-length-to-bore: the 16" guns on the Missouri were 50 cal guns; their barrels (the rifled part) were 800 inches long. Some countries use only the bore-to-rifled-length ratio, some include the chamber.

Denver, CO...good place to live for the most part, but I have to drive quite a long way to be able to shoot outside at a sanctioned range without having to deal with other shooters and a range master. By sanctioned range I mean someplace with a backstop reserved for shooting, not some gravel pit where people shoot at trash they bring. I don't like the lack of freedom concerning distance and when to fire or not fire at the outdoor ranges in the metro area's larger parks. I can barely tolerate shooting indoors...too loud, even with foam ear plugs and ear muffs on top of those. Maybe I should move to Wyoming.

In math it's either right or wrong. There is no 'well intended' answer that will get a passing grade. In writing, you can play on the instructors emotions and if they're bad at their job they'll excuse lousy writing if they like what they thing the student is saying.

I had a film class around 1982 where an essay assignment was given. I wrote a lengthy parody of a Serious Critic article. The instructor loved it. I felt like Jack Nicholson in this scene:

468 MINEMINEMINE:

Caliber, when discussing handguns and rifles, refers to the "nominal" bullet diameter ....

... and, effectively, specifies the cartridge used.

If someone talks about a ".45", pay attention to the context of the discussion. If the discussion is about automatics, .45 ACP is likely the cartridge, but it could be a .45 derived from the .45ACP (see Wiki) or possibly another (see Wiki). If the context is six-guns, .45 Long Colt (or a derivative) is much more likely. There is at least 1 revolver on the market that uses .45 ACP.

Check CheaperThanDirt.com, or some other dealer. Look at their firearms, and see how they are organized. The look at their ammunition. Spend enough time to become familiar with what sort of ammunition is used in which kinds of firearms.

No web project will ever meet the cost/desire axis for the average biz.

Limit your wants, make sure of your needs, hire as much as you can
afford, and shop around. You can always post a list of desired features +
time frame on wanted boards.

The key is knowing and making sure of what you absolutely have to have for the money you are willing to pay.

I taught one of my compliance auditors how to do web support -- and he continued it after we both worked elsewhere. It ain't rocket surgery. The underlying problem is that someone with no idea of what is to be done is describing something specific in a non-technical language and wants a professional to GET WHAT THEY WANT without having to learn how to specify it. Happens all the time.

And the solution can never be to hire better professionals. The solution is to couple the effort toward getting there to the effort of describing "there", so that the point is reached where "close enough, let's just stop". The alternatives, sadly, are to pay out the ass or be pissed-off at the result. It's just the way things work.

Those aren't really equivalents. The most used part of Wordpress is the server side functions. Frontpage was mainly a creation and management tool with a foucs on working with IIS. You could use it with Wordpress to have a data base driven site but it stopped being updated around the time Wordpress was getting big. Plenty of other more recent creation tools, like Microsoft's own Live Writer, know how to work directly with Wordpress.

Microsoft in general appears to have decided against being in the web development tools business except as it relates to things like SQL and IIS or as an output option for Office apps. Pretty much all of their end user tools for doing WYSIWYG web work are either officially dead or long overdue for updates.

Cannot recommend Frontpage for anything. MS introduced it as a disruptive bit of late web tech and it failed.

Joomla, Wordpress, or a handful of other platforms have already proven better for web biz.

I was down at the local Barnes and Noble today, perusing the computer books. And I've got to say that the shit level is pegging the meter. There are tons of entire languages that seem to have no basis in reality and no reason to exist, and there is zippity-doo-dah available to manage real projects instead of masturbating to ridiculous certifications. When do you need Ruby? What is Python good for? Under what circumstances should you shun Perl? When should I use Hadoop over Cassandra, or vice-versa? Fuck if I know.

I've experienced enough programming in the dark ages (COBOL, ForTran, BASIC, Pascal, C, Assembler....) to know my way around a bit, but this is crap. In the real world, during my visit to the 3D printer place, a guy was saying, "well, the actual commands go to the printer in Python, so you get interpreter lags." Problem is, I understand what he said. He said, "someone used the wrong fucking tool because choosing the right tool was too difficult". We've got 15,000 tools to do stuff in software, and no freakin' idea of which is the right tool to use, and everyone is running around with their favorite screwdriver looking to pound a nail.

Part of the problem is that everyone would rather play than work, and modern IT culture has fostered that. I appreciate it, but it has led to a shit-ton of wasted time and energy and a lot of products that don't work properly *for the task* because the program is the goal, not the task.

It doesn't have to be drudgery, but IT peeps need to get rid of the disdain for business needs.

I think they've long since given up on stocking serious high level stuff int he book stores, unless they are tech specialists. Anybody at that level is likely to find a PDF online of the book and give that a look to see if the paper version is worth buying. For B(amp)M the real market is stuff for beginners, like introduction to whacking people on the head with an iPad.

What I've never found at any Barnes and Noble store is a book on creating EPUB files. The place that sells the #2 e-reader brand doesn't carry any books on how create content for their device. You can find those books at Amazon, though.

It just frustrates the crap out of me. There are real goals that need to be accomplished -- just for one, you've got photos that you took on several cameras, photos that were sent to you in several media, photos that you've scanned at various resolutions -- distributed across a wide spectrum of media from DVD to SD to email attachments -- on two decades of machines where you update from one to another. How do you consolidate these, eliminate duplications, and ensure a secure backup? Would that by Python, Ruby, Rails, VBASIC, or Hadoop?

ForTran was optimized for Formula Translation in the engineering field; COBOL was optimized for business applications; Algol (and its derivatives: Pascal, BCPL, B, C, C++, and C sharp) was geared to implementing algorithms. WTF is Hadoop good for? Python?

We'll be rich! (yes ... it is burbon again ... sorry.)

Computing has progressed in kind of a wrong direction - not necessarily wasted, not that I don't enjoy some of the benefits - but imagine what would happen if we had pushed harder for expert systems and less for bling?

Your task would be to have the "expert" combine your tasks in the way you wanted to minimize your interaction, by establishing and testing rules (like what to do with what type of file automatically when you insert a DVD or USB drive, automatic renaming, etc), and then you set it loose and observe the results.

Scripting to automatically sort and copy from inserted DVDs can be done (was dealing with this recently), but it's such a nightmare that I ended up doing it manually.

But we have gigantic bloated Operating Systems built on decades of legacy code, arcane generational interface rules, and lots and lots of conflicting apps and ads.

When we have the choice of making a thing that works better versus making a new thing that doesn't work very well, we generally choose the latter.

Without the desire for the new, we wouldn't progress, but it drives us to endlessly duplicate effort. Darn tradeoffs.

537 OS developers always talk about putting whizzy expert system stuff into the next big rev and always have impressive lab demos. But like battle plans and contact with the enemy, this stuff never seems to hold up well enough with end users to be shippable.

So much stuff that has seemed right around the corner for decades has never found those last few missing pieces needed to become a widely used product.

A lot of photo management apps have duplication detection. It may be a lot simpler to look at reviews of those than cobbling up your own code. Probably the first step is picking up a big drive, like one of those WD 3 TB externals going cheap at TigerDirect, and get everything copied on to that before any old machines or media fail. Then see how much space is left because you'll want a comparable volume for the organized version of it all.

I think that visioning it as one would the progress of transportation systems helps reduce the boggle. On foot, on log, on horse, on boat, on train, on plane, etc., then iterate. The speed, the compression of time by advancements, has led us all to forget that we are only beginning. 549 Hadoop isn't a language. It's a platform for creating data intensive distributed apps, so it can be a floor wax and a dessert topping from the right perspective.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hadoop

A trip to Wikipedia with these sort of question is a lot more useful than any bookstore these days. The back cover of a book just isn't enough space to describe what the subject is and why you want to learn for these deeply convoluted tool sets.

It used to be a lot simpler to look at a task and work out which odd names and acronyms you needed to know and what else was just esoterica for others to use. But nowadays you can waste a lot of time reading up on stuff you'll never deal with directly in a zillion years because it feels like you're accomplishing something but isn't actual work.

I'm starting to think the line was crossed before I was born. It's just such a big Thing to move, it moves slowly. And even if we change direction, we'll keep moving the same way for a while.

And we don't have far to go.

I mean, we didn't have "Everybodynet" when I was a kid. We has BBSs and Usenet and TV and papers and books.

And people could be out of control and rude and nasty.

But it's hard to imagine hundreds of thousands or millions of threats and death wishes.

One of my consulting clients (an insurance company) some years ago had an inhouse desktop app that was being constantly changed (like daily) due to new customers, regulations, etc and their daily build process for the app took over 4hr.

That 4hr build severely impacted their test group's ability to find issues fast enough for whatever developer was doing time in the barrel that night, and get the thing ready for push redeployment the next morning.

This long build time problem had apparently been going on for years and nobody could figure it out.

I was consulting on other SCM issues when this situation was casually mentioned on day, so I took a real quick look at their build process which was using a bunch of Unix shell scripts to drive it. There was some shit where the scripts being used to do math, jigger strings and whatnot in one spot and it was causing like 20+ processes to get forked off for each of those operations.

I replaced about 3 lines of script code with a tiny C program that did the same manipulations and their build time was slashed to 20min. Not dropped by 20min, dropped TO 20min from 4hr+.

My whole effort, from analysis to implementation only took about 1/2hr ;-> I was a freaking god that day.

It was more muted, publicly. But the ideas haven't changed.

I grew up with hippies - the real leftists, the ideologues - in the back rooms they were about purges and camps and elimination of dissenters. Holdovers from the 60s far left.

It's a "paranoid stereotype," but in my experience it was true.

Not everyone, some fellow travelers really seemed to be all peace and flowers - but they willingly traveled with the whackos.

Not people find fellow cause everywhere because we're legion and we can talk to anyone - and avoid any ideas - in many ways.

The fringes are just weaving through the mainstream now, agglomerating greater numbers.

Damn, I need to stop interacting with the world for a while.

Finally got around to downloading all of Blakes 7. I'd forgotten how
painfully cheap the production was, considering Space:1999 was around
the same era. BBC vs. ITV.

I got all of Blakes 7 for the BH some years back, from traveling to the UK on business. With the little "Liberator" models in the special edition.

563 Not a big fan but it felt right to name my first Windows 7 install Blake. Later it became Blake-64. Then about a year ago it became Blakes8 as the first test version for that came available.

564 And all the while, the nation that was their hope, the nation for which they left everything and everyone they ever knew, slips closer and closer toward a hybridized Bladerunner meets 1984 meets England at its worst.

Still, there's always whiskey, and it is possible to live well. I suppose thoughtful antique Romans, in the last days of things there, must have felt something like that.

Not sure if you'll read this David. I sincerely understand what you're saying and appreciate your thoughts about what we as a nation have done to ourselves and what we have in store for our future. I am on the same wavelength as far as my personal concerns go, so the coonskin cap line was actually half-serious, if only meant as humor. I have spent a good deal of my working career in some pretty heinous places -and also some beautiful places- doing hard work and putting in long hours. Sometimes insane hours: I once had a two week paycheck with 220 hours. Living a lifestyle few would be willing to deal with for a few weeks, much less for years on end. And adopted a mindset that made that experience enjoyable and rewarding on levels that were other than monetary. I'm battle hardened for the coming apocalypse, as it were.

566 it has been that way since way before then. Civil War? Tories and Revolutionaries? Cain Abel?

Seems to me that folks were willing to stand their ground and trust God to have their back. These days, all anyone I know seems interested in is compromise. Just don't ever stop to think about what that compromise entails. Because considering consequences is racist.

567 The one thing I've never been good at is sandbagging clients. I probably could have turned that little 1/2hr C program into two days worth of billable hours rather than a freebie while walking out the door to lunch.

What area of CA, if I may ask? I'd say get while the gettin' is good. There are some places I love, but would never live in by choice. California is one of them.

======
In my youth I did so many idiot things that I came to a simple realization: mental health is like physical health -- it is not some bright line that one is on one side or the other -- rather, it is a entire range of conditions.
Physical health can range from the incredible fitness of Floyd Mayweather or some other champ in his prime to the sad state of someone minutes from death. Similarly, there is a huge range of mental health as well.
Sadly, it seems to me that very few appreciate that mental health has to be protected as one would protect their physical health, because it is precious, fleeting, and certainly subject to deterioration just by living on this planet.
Somehow in this country we have adopted the habits of mental health that are on a par with drinking raw sewage. It is truly frustrating and terrifying to watch. The consequences are not, and will not, be pretty.

Years ago I would have argued with you. Maybe even last year.

But too many conservatives have fled the field here, I guess I'll leave one of the most beautiful places on Earth sooner or later because so few stayed to fight.

Bon Voyage. North or South Central, probably. Culture shock.

572 I mean, from my experience in California as a non-native (first time in CA was when I was about 25) it just has that 'feel' about it. Maybe that is something created by expectations you have from hearing about it all your life from movies and tv shows, then finally going there, but to work and not for something touristy. There's just something about that place that permeates the psyche like no other place in the US has done for me.

Desenex can cure that...

I moved to CA in 1980, and fled around 1984. The handwriting was on the wall even back then.

So can herbal enemas....but given the choice of working my ass off for a meager apartment in San Luis Obispo or being a millionaire as long as I'm within the city limits of Chicago, I'd go for the westerly option.

575 Oh well, need to deal with more stress and bureaucrats and insurance and money tomor... today.

Time to sleep.

Supposed to be raining soon, hope I don't sleep through it like last time.
