Further Researches Into the Greater Internet F***wad Theory

Is Social Media Breeding Monsters?

There are days when I dread getting onto Facebook or Twitter. As someone who monitors a very wide variety of feeds for news and information that are outside of just my own select follows, I probably see more than I'd like to. It often devolves out there into a sewage pit of trolls, infighting, harassment, stalking, crime and just generally repulsive behavior. But there are plenty of positives about social media, and it's up to us to be vigilant and help make sure that those positives continue to shine through.

I contributed my thoughts to that, here.

How I hate the endless point-scoring on the internet. I don't mind argument -- argument is about something greater than self. When I knock the Tea Party, and someone argues with me, we're actually discussing something other than ourselves.

But when someone trolls in to play the point-scoring game.... When it's obvious all that's going on is some idiot seeking to prove, in the space of one comment, the perpetual topic A of the Internet -- I'm better than you -- it infuriates me.

I imagine you're not fans of it, either.

This is so obvious that it hardly needs stating, but: The Internet is egalitarian... and that is both its boon and its bane. The downside of the internet's egalitarianism is that people who have no social peers in their own lives -- because, most likely, they are insane or too repulsive in character to attract real-life friends -- flock to the internet. They've alienated everyone they've ever known in real-life; now it's time to try out their off-putting schtick on the millions of new potential victims at their fingertips.

So stay off of those things. Permanently.

You'll have the added benefit of knowing that you're not putting money into the hands of arrogant prats who will then turn around and pump that money into a galaxy of liberal-loon causes. As do the execs at Facebook, Twitter, et cetera. Go look at who Obama visits when he comes to Commiefornia on fundraising trips. Those same people.

95 As a content consumer and not a content creator my solution is to avoid places that devolve into stupid tribalism. NYTimes, Yahoo News, YouTube comments, etc are all no-go places for me.

That said, I really do feel for content creators. Especially once in places like YouTube. Those guys get so much hate. Some of them make hundreds of videos putting themselves out there, and are mercilessly, and ignorantly savaged for it.

This is one reason I can't stand places like Slashdot. If you're a company that does AMAZING things, but are on their list of hated companies, you will get ZERO credit. Montesano, GE, Microsoft, etc. are all very hated over there. Comment after comment will be nothing other than self-identifying as a righteous bien-pensant.

96 What is worse is the 'anonymity' of Facebook posts.... even from people you DO know...

I've had people I KNOW say things on Facebook that they would NEVER say to my face.... thinking that anger would cool before I saw them again.... and people who DON'T know you are often even worse...

But... I don't hold a grudge.... I nurse and keep it like a family heirloom until it is time to confront....

98 It is not so much about repulsive individuals finding a home in the web's anonymity, but about those who do have social graces finding a place to not have them (some are exhausted by having to be socially graceful, after all, and they crave their time as anonymous virtual sociopaths). Like offline life, so much of what we do with and around others is posing. This only seems problematic when we make the mistake of thinking that there is a "real" person that comes out at some point.

There may be a real person somewhere, but it doesn't come out offline any more than it comes out online. In the end, we are still always posers regardless of the medium, but some media force us to pose in ways that would be offputting in the wrong circumstances.

99 I have a similar take on this. It's like everyone get 'familiar" and then tries to out do each other.

But that's also the charm of this place. There are a lot of very smart, very quick people trying to outdo each other. That's good. It's when someone thinks being top dog is more important that civility that things suffer. You, for example. You suck.

113 I've found the best and the worst on the net, but I'm becoming very selective about where I spend my time, and where I comment. I don't envy you having to monitor all that nonsense. I don't have the patience for it anymore. Perhaps because I listen to enough inane conversation in real life. (Being forced to hear teenaged girls discuss their latest crush is beyond mind-numbing.) I think most of us seek online environments where we can have a rousing good discussion; which includes civil debate where we listen to people we don't agree with and acknowledge when they've made a good point. I've learned a great deal by hearing someone dissect my opinions. It makes me consider other angles, and makes the eventual opinion have weight. In fact, I don't think I really understand an issue until I've essentially walked around it and looked at from every perspective. Finding online communities that practice that sort of give and take is becoming increasingly rare. Most of time, unless you are a known commenter, it is difficult to express a strong idea without people immediately assuming the worst, or becoming upset because you see things slightly different. As you've pointed out, our ability to debate is reduced when it becomes a contest in mud-slinging and not an exchange of ideas.

Ace,
I'll say this. I think you're mostly right. But also I think people flock to the internet to push their particular social agenda.
Case in point, in the CNN thread you referenced, I think that particular person (or persons) really hates the whole American Prosperity thing (which let's face it, even tough the ships are Bahamas Registry, the cruise is American life epitomized.) So they cry the whole "see how selfishwe are" thing whenever they can.

I will say this, I told my wife "this may soundawful, but my first responsewas "wow Carnival's gonna have some deals coming up as a result of this." Yeah I feel bad for the people (their vacation was ruined)it's a low probability risk of getting aboard a floating city though. Carnival needs to make it right to them, but I wouldn't fault anyone who wanted to take a cruise later. (I did comment that if it had happened to me, I'd likely not want to be on a cruise for a while myself. I also joked that having just dealt with a sewer backup in my basement, I probably couldn't survived.)
The internet allows people to push their agenda without the social stigma (as AtC put it "the punch in the face" that would normally come with being so brazen at it.)

I've read that FB and other sites have led to huge surges in affairs and divorces. In the old days, finding an old high school fling was much more difficult - especially since many folks don't remain in the same town they grew up in. 167 Good post, and many of my comments probably fit this profile.

That having been said, I mentioned this earlier, posting on your local newspaper site is really an incredible experience.

At the HQ most commentators can read and have some knowledge of history, etc. On a newspaper thread the stupid is really really strong. I mean depressingly strong.

You simply can not explain anything to them. These are the Obamabots that drink the kool aid all day.

Everyday, I am amazed at the stupid of the comments, and the comments that agree with the stupid.

We are so boned. We have raised people in socialist schools that simply know fucking nothing.

Which is, frankly, typical real word guy conversational behavior when your with the boys. Giving out facts, opinions, woppers and toppers. And on the internet, everyone is a guy, even the girls.

Note that the author of the original article is a female. She may be defining as "monsters" people who are simply "mean" to what she perceives as the wrong people.

"By my estimation, 70% of the people on Facebook rarely post anything. The others post almost non-stop."

True. And the bad part is, the 70% are the ones you really aren't that close to, and you only accepted their Friend offer because you didn't want to be a dick. So you spend all your time reading unimportant (and unoriginal, usually just a re-post) things from people you don't really like.

174 a million years ago when I was in college, and before there was an internet, my university had an information desk. To get students to use it, they were allowed to call in and ask all manner of nutty trivia questions which we had to attempt to answer. Like I had to find out how they make grapenuts, among a million other goofy things.

I discovered that people will behave completely differently when they are assured of anonimity, and that when you remove the shame of discovery by their peers, will say anything. The internet functions the same way

Its like the Boston Tea Party was more about the Crown giving a Tax Break to the British East India company, than it was over the size of the Tax... ie... the crown giving a Tax break to a favorite Company so they could undercut the competition (can you say Facebook? or GE?)...

I disagree with this. I think a lot of the people who comment on the Internet do it to validate themselves. The issue doesn't really matter. If it's not this, then it will be that. They're the equivalent of a bellicose drunk in a bar. They want to win, because winning makes them feel good, and if you lose, well, nobody knows who you really are.

193 Only ever got banned at one site. It was an honest mistake. I read the headline and skimmed the story. It was about some white guys getting fired. Accused of saying something insensitive. I wrote some quick thing saying that white people shouldn't allow themselves to be scapegoated like that, made some crack of the diversity nazis.

What I didn't read was the part about how, in addition to saying something insensitive -- they were also actual neo-nazis and implicated in a murder of a black dude. And the link, which I was too lazy to click, had a picture and they had swastika tatoos and were obviously total nazi scum.

In that context my comment attack modern political correctness and the Diversity Nazis was, uh, really inappropriate and looked like I was promoting white pride in defense of some neo-nazi skinhead murderers.

I would have banned me to probably.

298 Try this internet loss of humanity thingy tale of weird.

My Wife's Uncle is dying of cancer. He's got days, maybe hours.

As some bizarre method of coping (that's what I'm hoping, anyway), his daughter is daily posting pictures of him on facebook. Laying there, 83 pounds soaking wet with tubes in every orifice, f*d up out of his mind on morphine. From what I understand, funny "go get 'em - you'll show 'em" type captions.

So as a "facebook friend", you get to see this poor bastard's daily dying journal done up as some sort of "meme generator".

Just a few years ago it was much harder to rob somebody of their dignity like that - where's the humanity? Not doing facebook or being a friend, I can only imagine what the conversation is. Do you "like" something like that? Good God.

Of course I don't usually get hauled along to these things, because I just start going "Seriously, what the f* is wrong with your brain?".

316 To answer your question Ace, YES. Three points. First is that the internet offers a bit of anonymity which kinda fosters what I call cyber courage. For example if someone said some of the things they say to others on a comment thread like this one in a setting like in the line at the bank. Most likely they would get their lights punched out. Thats why lines at the bank etc. for the most part are much more civil. Second. Social networks. FB to be specific are kinda based in fantasy in that the relationships are not real and based more in narcissism and voyeurism. Look at me I have 1000 friends on FB. Never met any of them though.
My third point would be that it's to easy. What I mean is that I could type up a tweet or post in the heat of the moment hit send and regret it later.

That's probably good.

318 @314

Stopped calling, shit they won't email you. Now it's texting.
My sons will not answer their phone or my emails, but I text them and within two minutes I get a reply.

One of them even let his voice mail fill up so you could not leave messages. He got to working and realized he was fucking up and had to call me for his password to clean out his voice mail box that had been full for about a year.

320 Voicemail is the funniest to me. I think it's dead. No one wants to leave a message and fewer still want to listen to them.

321 I have an account on Facebook which I visit about once per month, solely to check in on some old classmates.and some relatives who live across country.

I do not discuss politics but it seeps in from other people's posts. I hate the whole thing because they are constantly adding new features and I cannot ever find anything.

So to me, it looks like a bunch of stuff like "Sam and I are going to the fish place in Tampa" mixed with "Latest recipes from Southern living!" and political rants against Obama by my dog trainer.

I do not find it useful at all, and when you add in my hatred of Zuckerberg and the way they data mine from that site, it is a wonder I go there at all. I think I keep the account because if I close it some of my friends will start the rumor that I am dead.

There are days when I dread getting onto Facebook or Twitter

Then don't. Get rid of them both. They're designed for idiots anyway.

Simple, isn't it?

Posted by: Jay Guevara at February 18, 2013 08:29 PM (IDSI7)

323 I still have a twitter account but I don't think I've tweeted or checked my timeline since Nov 6.

Exactly. And shouldn't that read " some of my 'friends' will start the rumor that I am dead?'"

For my part, to any such "friends," I am dead. Eff off, "friends."

No Facebook. I value my anonimity.

No twitter. My vocabulary has more than 140 words.

FB is for bored women and teenagers. My sister lives on it. She's 58. I get sick of the constant fucking email about Bubba you have a new post.

Get a life. I don't give a shit if your dog caught a rabbit or you shit in the woods, and I don't want to see your pictures about it either.
Posted by: Billy Bob, Pseudo Intellectual at February 18, 2013 08:16 PM (wR+pz)

You are my man. A friend asked me for my Facebook page, and when told I didn't have one, replied that I should "friend" him when I got one.

I told him I would get one, as soon as I turned into a teenaged girl, and he would be the first to be "friended."

Text them that you're sending them some money, and you'll leave details on their voicemail.

329 There is no reasoning with people that believe in imaginary beings, or vote for people who believe in imaginary beings, so how can we argue about rational minor details, when the main precept of what they espouse is so fked up?

Posted by: Toby TL at February 18, 2013 08:48 PM (dbt/7)

330 People that think there is a God watching their every hair fall to the ground, or people that vote for same said believers, how can anyone with a rational mind do anything but mock them?

20 messages, 20 hangups...that's why they invented caller ID, so you know who called and didn't leave their name, their number or a message.

332 I never got banned from LGF, but he must purge his list every so often. I had posted in a few years and when I went back to log in, nothing. Gosh, that really upset me! Posted by: Billy Bob, Pseudo Intellectual at February 18, 2013 07:47 PM (wR+pz)

Same here. Once I looked around the site though and saw how much it had changed since I was a regular - well, I was very happy I was no longer a regular.

I miss some of the LGF posters of the early days (for me, that was 2001, 2002). Glen Wishard's posts stood out - he wrote friggin' novels over there - always brilliant and entertaining. And Allahpundit was extremely funny back in his pre-HA days. That was when it was a big deal if a post got 100 comments. Ah, well. Like an earlier commenter said, I'm waiting for CJ to say Dan Rather was right.

334 I think we find in the anonymity of the internet of the comment sections, social media, and games is that people 'bravely' reveal what is in their true nature.

Most are hate spewers willing to kill anyone to get their way, or to be 'better' than another as long as they suffer no consequences. Then there are a few that are truly wondrous loving people even to those they dislike and disagree with.

Life is a bell curve with a constant moving median. When that median is moved artificially things go a bit wacky.

Posted by: All_IS_LOST at February 19, 2013 12:50 AM (T/L2Z)

335 Ace-
I loved your comments on the cruise. You nailed it. And you said this...

But when someone trolls in to play the point-scoring game.... When it's obvious all that's going on is some idiot seeking to prove, in the space of one comment, the perpetual topic A of the Internet -- I'm better than you -- it infuriates me.

For two years, I read this site religiously. I gave it up when you conducted the daily smear job on Paul whom I still consider as the only viable opposition to the clown that the GOP helped deliver.

I come back now and then. You are right about topic A. And while you stand infuriated please know this. I felt the same way about you- delivering the message that you were smarter than us Paulbot worshippers and you thought what? Romney, the elite mormon banker was the answer to our prayers?

Ultimately, I think you understand that the Republic is now lost. And while you are busy pointing out topic A and how it looks on everyone else- please know that topic A looks no better on you.

336 @Clutch. Totally in agreement. I have an immediate member of my family with terminal cancer. We didn't have to ask to know he would not want his condition shared on Facebook . Those close enough to need to know were called. He has the right to live his last months without being treated like a walking dead man - and from people that aren't close to him .
