A Pill for Instant Sobriety?

I can't believe it, but there's a lot of things I don't believe that are true.

Party animals could soon be able to sober up in an instant just by popping a pill.

Researchers have developed a cocktail of alcohol metabolizing enzymes that speedily reduces blood alcohol levels in drunk mice.

The treatment, which has been compared to having 'millions of liver cells inside your stomach,' could have far-reaching implications for drinkers.

I always thought it was stupid that the "synthol" served in the Ten-Forward ended its inebriatory effects the moment the drinker willed those effects to end.

And yet, here again is some Star Trek "science" I thought was jackass-stupid which seems to be at least possibly achievable.

I still don't like the show, though. They killed Tasha Yar.*

* This is a joke. I also didn't like Tasha Yar. I just pretty much dislike everyone on ST:TNG, or any ST show.

Except TOS, of course. They had Whimsical Endings there, when they would freeze-frame on Kirk and McCoy laughing at Spock.

The
Left has successfully established that unending deficit spending won't
result in any bad consequences. The two issues share this in common.

If
you can't beat them on the Social issues, you won't be able to beat
them on the economic issues either. They will just swivel their guns
from the social issues, (once those are defeated) and start training
them on the fiscal issues.

Bottom line, if we can't beat them on the airwaves, we can't beat them at all. (At least politically.)

Back in 1997 I had to take DWI classes and the instructor claimed that such a pill already existed.

It sounded like bullshit to me so I took it with a grain of salt.

It was strange -- the teacher seemed to pull the topic out of thin air announce it to the class. I don't know why. Maybe to see what the looks in people's faces would be?

Anyways, he then said the substance would never, ever allowed to be used under any circumstances. And it never would be because the ramifications on society. He told us to imagine a world where people could drink freely and then just pop a pill and be sober. I sat there wondering why he suddenly went off topic telling me some crazy ass sounding story.

This story is a bit more plausible. Something like what they describe could help lots of people.

172 Denise Crosby wanted to leave the show. She was frustrated that she had whole episodes with nothing to do, and only a single line of dialog ("Hailing frequencies open, sir").

She should have stuck it out. In the early days the TNG writers were trying to figure out what to do with everyone. Geordi was useless until they made him head of engineering... I remember in one episode Picard ordered Geordi to run to a window and look out, to use his VISOR thing to scan something. As if Geordi's VISOR is in any way better than the sensor suite onboard an exploration starship?

Given Tasha Yar's background, they could have made her the "street smart" one. She should have been able to pickpocket, and she should have been good at "reading" crowds.

182 I used to love ST:TNG and it was one of the first series that I actually plowed through over about 2 weeks on Netflix.
The longer it went on, the more I hated it.
Recycled plots, of course, but The Star Trek Tech Ex Machina crap made me realize what utter schlock it was. Write yourself into a corner, no worries, TECH saves the day.
The Prime Directive really hosed them too. Should have unloaded that somehow or stuck to it. O r maybe changed it to the Secondary Directive?

Any other Star Trek besides TOS and Enterprise are unwatchable. DS9 is BORING AS HELL. Seriously, I tried to watch it a few times but I wound up taking a nap every time.

I despise every cast member on Voyager. Voyager was just appallingly awful.

I did the same thing with SG1. I hate that now also for different reasons. Around Season 5 I think the cast stopped giving a shit. After RDA left, I stopped watching it. But it was actually compelling and original for a while.

I think Battlestar Galactica and Firefly hold up pretty well with repeated viewing probably because they're the best SciFi series ever besides ST:TOS.

191 wheatie said: They've been working on a 'Sobriety Pill' for quite a while.

I first heard of it about 15 years ago.

I'm trying to remember what the problem has been with it...some bad side effect

I realize I'm late with this, but if you happen to see this wanted to pass on that you're right.

A team out of Merck was working on a compound called alpha5Ia, which was found to eliminate the memory-deficits found when you get fucked up to have stupid, unprotected sex with someone you don't wish to remember the next morning. AFAIK, there was pressure to sideline the compound for legal reasons: don't enable people to drink and still believe they're functional.

That said, it's still a solid structural lead which never completely disappeared from the RD rotation as it has nice nootropic (learning and memory enhancing) properties in most every test we throw it against without the anxiety promoting/anxiogenic effects seen in most compounds that reduce GABAergic firing.

Anyways, if you're ever on Jeapordy...

195 @193 The idea of "sober-up" pills has been used as a throwaway in countless science fiction stories. I can't think of a particular example, but I've seen plenty of stories where the protagonist casually took a sober-up pill. I think I also remember one where someone handed sober-up pills to the protagonist, who didn't want to become not-drunk but grudgingly took them.
