Overnight Open Thread (16 Feb 2013)

Oh hell no. Intel Watching You Watch TV.

The most intriguing element of the box is the built-in camera that monitors viewers and is designed to give advertisers a better insight into who is watching their shows. Originally it appeared this would simply capture crude information such as an estimate of the gender and age of viewers.

Now Intel is talking about the idea of using facial recognition as a way for individual viewers to automatically “log in” to a personal account on the box. The idea is that if you sit in front of the screen alone, the box can make viewing recommendations or show a favorite channels list based on your personal viewing history.

Now Intel says this feature can be turned off, but I'm sure it can be turned back on via other means without you knowing. Plus, it might be a tad embarrassing if your pron playlist comes up when you have company.

Haha. Live by the curve, die by the curve. Students Boycott Final To Challenge Professors Grading Policy And Get A's.

As the semester ended in December, students in Fröhlich’s "Intermediate Programming", "Computer System Fundamentals," and "Introduction to Programming for Scientists and Engineers" classes decided to test the limits of the policy, and collectively planned to boycott the final. Because they all did, a zero was the highest score in each of the three classes, which, by the rules of Fröhlich’s curve, meant every student received an A.

“The students refused to come into the room and take the exam, so we sat there for a while: me on the inside, they on the outside,” Fröhlich said. “After about 20-30 minutes I would give up.... Then we all left.” The students waited outside the rooms to make sure that others honored the boycott, and were poised to go in if someone had. No one did, though.

Don't know about fiber optics, but I know on the old wooden sailing ships they have glass prisms set into the deck that would capture light and diffuse it down belowdecks. Of course that only works for the second deck (second is the one right below the weatherdeck, which is the one open to the weather, also known as the first deck). Below that you're back down to lanterns.

Bing "sun tubes". there are several manufacturers. The product is essentially a 1-foot (or so) diameter thin-gauge steel or aluminum tube, long enopugh to extend from the exterior of a roof to the top of a ceiling (3' to maybe 10'), with a reflectively- coated interior, and clear plastic/glass ends.

The marketing literature says they work wonderously well, the photos suggest that they work well.

Can't recall their trade name but do a Bing search on light tubes. Someone actually did answer your post downthread. I've seen them frequently in residential applications. They work well. I don't know what the conduit transmitting the light is, but it's about a foot wide and as long as it needs to be to get to the roof. Transmits daylight into a regular looking ceiling light fixture as long as the sun is up.

I must admit to being intrigued by the technical aspects. How could you capture such a shot without the photographer immediately setting himself on fire? I suppose you could do a remote, but you would still have to develop the film. Forget electronics, that shit would burn out the receptors immediately.

Maybe not such a bad thing, but every once in a while I have to move the screen back and forth to get it to come on, and every now and again I have to rap the surfaces below the keyboard. It's like a connector is drifting loose, I suppose I should open it up and see. Also, with Windows Vista (yeah, I know) I had to turn off the latest update, if it downloads and installs the damn thing will shut off without warning. Microsloth "tech support" only says "It shouldn't do that."

No shit sherlock, thanks for all the help.

More and more personal and household devices are connecting to the

Earlier this month, Petraeus mused about the emergence of an
“Internet of Things” — that is, wired devices — at a summit for

applies to these technologies,” Petraeus enthused, “particularly to

So if you want 1000 sq ft lit to 1/2 sunlight, you need at least 500 sq ft of collector nearby in full sunlight. Which probably wouldn't get approved by the Hobbiton zoning board.

Wait. I thought anything other than muscle pain was your body's way of saying, "Knock that shit off."

He is taking some time off. Knee pain for runners can be something that's not a big deal depending on where it is. Outside of the knee, ITB (which is inflammation of the illio-tibial tendon that runs from the hip to the knee). I occasionally get that, and I just back off for a few days, ice and stretch it. Then there is patellofemoral syndrome, which is morein the frontof the knee (tracking issue, usually from overuse) so taking some time off and rest is also appropriate.

Anything chronic or recurrent should be evaluated. Sometimes people are running in the wrong shoes or need orthotics, etc.

Guy is tweeting with my wife, subject of MILFs comes up, wife mentions that many of our adult son's friends are attracted to her and he finds it funny/kinda uncomfortable. Guy tweets back using both @wife and @adultsion, so now he's talking to both of them. This amuses me, and seeing the opportunity to tease @adultson, I tweet "Hey @adultson, your mother still looks great in a thong-and better out of it" or words to that effect. Suddenly this guy tweets back "That was way over the line! Shame on you! You're blocked!" Funny guy. Chats wit my wife about sex, drags my son into the convo, and when I reply with what I know will be a joke to both of them, he gets in a huff. Whoever the hell he was, I wish him well, but really, his tuque seems to be juuuust a little too tight.

I have never been sprayed with jet fuel before. It was simply un fucking believable.

The plane came in at about 500 ft. You could not hear it, UNTIL he hit the afterburners. Mother of god, I would not want to be on the receiving end of that shit.

The fucker split the two goal posts with his wings out and then did a barrel turn pulling them back. I thought he would crash into the building downtown. Gone is a nano second.

Jet fuel covered everyone. So fucking cool. Nothing like the sound of 1,000s of lbs of fuel being blown out the back of a bomber.

Elliptical is good because it's no impact. Whenever I get injured, that, running on the Alter-G (anti-gravity treadmill)and deep pool running are thethree things the doctor always says I can do.

Book by some guy named McDougall iirc, called born to run. Read it if you are at all into running.

That was a really good book. I for one only use my Five Fingers for deep pool running (so I get some resistance). I know I am not someone who was born to run barefoot. I have really flat feet. I need stability and orthotics.

19 minute 5k, that is darn speedy! Congrats to you!

You can totally do that! You should sign up for a 5k race this year. You can always walk/run it! Someone here (I can't remember who) ran their first race at Disney World last year (I remember it involved wine), and then they later ran an half marathon (I think it was Tower of Terror Half also at Disney World).

294 I'm never one for calling for "thoughts and prayers," or donations for that matter, but here's a story you might like. A friend of mine, young AF pilot, and two buds were out playing paintball in Missipp this morning when they found a lab kind of hound caught in a bear trap. Now sure any good old boy would have put that pup down, but these kids are straight as a string, so they took the dog to university hospital to be saved. The leg has to come off, of course, but there's quite a following for three-legged dogs of good character. I wonder what happens if the "owner" shows up -- or the trapper wants to claim his gear. http://tinyurl.com/d3dqxhj

I went in for just one thing, and got out before my credit card caught on fire, so I'm sure they likely didn't have any ARs or AR ammo, but LOTS of other stuff.

What is the deal with Bass Pro shops anyway? Are they under the same corporate roof as Cabelas, or did they just shamelessly (and slavishly) copy Cabaelas' store design? They put up a Bass Pro shop in a big rural mall just north of Calgary, and I would swear that it's exterior and interior design is a Xerox copy of the Cabelas in Glendale, AZ, right down to the indoor trout pool and the number of points on the rack of the stuffed muley buck.

And why would you have a Bass Pro shop in Alberta, anyway, given that no body of water in this province supports bass of any sort? Kind of like having a "Moose Pro" shop in Florida.

We used to have this guy working for us that was very much "holier-than-thou" (deacon in his church, even) and every so often someone would get totally pissed off about him.....and I'd say, "remember, he has three very sheltered daughters and lives in a house where he can never leave the toilet seat up."

And if that didn't do it, I'd have them imagine the day, 18 years in the future, when some motorcycle-riding punk would show up at his front door and say, "G'd evenin', Mr. Pierce -- I'm here to pick up Carrie....I even brought an extra helmet for her."

361 Seems to me Intel is late to the game. Kinect and Move (in its complete form) add cameras to the Xbox 360 amd PS3 respectively. Since a lot of people use those for much of their video viewing as well as gaming they could be recording all sorts of info. The next generation of consoles is expecting to up the ante on those features.

Laptops and tablets are now coming with webcams built-in almost universally. And a fair number of monitors have an integrated webcam and microphone for Skype.

Likewise, a lot of new TVs have cameras built-in for Skype and Kinect like gesture recognition. I was recently trying out a demo of a Samsung model in Best Buy that had a gesture controlled version of Angry Birds on it. This is in the the high end right now but will migrate into cheaper sets soon enough. It will probably be hard to find a TV at retail without a camera and 'smart' features within five years.

I cannot believe that that large a retailer can't get any ammo.

Strangely enough shot gun ammo isn't as scarce. I say strangely because in a home defensive situation, the shotgun is King. imo.

No, it's that they aren't willing to pay much more than pre-panic, and they didn't bother or didn't want to get into a high enough position on the contract chain with long-term purchases.

One local retailer actually carries a *huge* back-room stock, way more than they need, and they ration it out slowly to keep the shelves stocked during panics, which honestly happen every 4-6 years, some smaller than others.

SNL turned into a "barking seal" show. All the "jokes" are done to get the approval of the studio audience, not to make the viewer at home laugh. It has turned into the network version of Bill Maher.

It's the use of the two words together that is what was protected when Chubby Checker trademarked his name. I'd say he has a case. Of course the $500 million in damages is ludicrous. It wouldn't surprise if there is an out-of-court settlement. I'm not a lawyer, but anybody can see that the authors of the software were trading on Chubby's stage name to get a humorous and memorable name for their lame product.

489 Class IV is the "best" but heaviest and least flexible body armor, designed to stop armor piercing rifle (.30-06 AP) rounds.

Class III is below that, and IIIA below that.

The A designation is counter-intuitive, it's less effective than the plain version (but usually lighter).

You could try BulletProofMe.com , also gun auction places and some surplus shops get them. They're usually legal in most states.

547 Frys electronics already carries packages of little stickers in two densities for level of opacity, that are intended to cover LEDs on computers and appliances that can be annoying in a darkened bedroom or other places. They should do the trick for any unwanted cameras.

But considering you can buy a cheap lens for the Kinect that adjusts the amount of space needed for playing Kinect games, I expect a thriving accessory market in camera covers that can be removed for when the camera is desirable.

594 If you didn't have holes in your head, how would you breathe? Trepanning is just giving your brain direct access instead of relying on that roundabout lungs and circulatory system nonsense.

"You know, Egon, this reminds me of that time you tried to drill a hole in your head."

"It would have worked if you didn't stop me!"

596 Always loved that bit of the movie. Whenever I'm channel surfing and see that it's one I try to calculate when the good bit will come up and turn back for that. Another one is the saucer section crash landing in the seventh Trek movie. Those few minutes are the only portion of the movie I care to see again.

601 Morning all.

Peter Hyams totally ruined '2010' with his interjection of 'current' political tensions. And Arthur C. Clarke was a total prat to allow him to do it.

To be fair, Clarke was already on a downward decline regarding his work. 2063 was not as good as 2001 (or "The Sentinel") or 2010. The novel 3001 just plain sucked....

603 Thats it, I will never visit hot air again.

That pop up they have with the guy with red hair and a red t-shirt is not only big, but he is freakishly freaky looking and seeing that without being prepared late at night after eating a healthy mexican meal, can cause your bowls to tighten in shock just enough that you may very well shart from shock.

Then you are stuck with the option of do you go clean up and change your shorts or do you just let them air dry and hope you don't forget and run to the store and get hit by a car and taken to the emergency room and when they pull your pants down to operate on you, the doc sees your shart stained shorts and stops everything to call your mother and tell her that you aren't wearing clean underwear, thus causing your mother to die of embarrassment just like she always told you would happen if you didn't wear fresh underwear and got in an accident.

Anyway...no more hotair.

605 3001 was truly less than satisfying. TMA-2 is broke after falling to Europa. This after puny humans had dropped nuclear weapons on TMA-1 with no effect. And since HAL and Bowman say its broke, lets hope one of these here killer computer virii that Mankind has locked up on the Moon, ala Moonbase Alpha, will do the trick. Yeah what OS does a TMA run anyway?

606 You know you want this!

The "Brief Safe" is an innovative diversion safe that can secure your
cash, documents, and other small valuables from inquisitive eyes and
thieving hands, both at home and when you're traveling. Items can be
hidden right under their noses with these specially-designed briefs
which contain a fly-accessed 4" x 10" secret compartment with Velcro
closure and "special markings" on the lower rear portion. Leave the
"Brief Safe" in plain view in your laundry basket or washing machine at
home, or in your suitcase in a hotel room - even the most hardened
burglar or most curious snoop will "skid" to a screeching halt as soon
as they see them. (Wouldn't you?) Made in USA. One size. Color: white
(and brown).
