The proof for me was when looking at the A-10 someone pointed out that the weapon was at the centerline and the front landing gear had been moved to the side. I think you are correct, sir, that the order is gun first, flying platform second. Then all that armor and redundant system approach followed. The imitation-is-the-sincerest-form-of-flattery stuff arrived with the Russians, who had television in 1812, tried builing something like it. Go, Ace! Theoretically an A-10 at max airspeed will be brought to below stall speed by the GAU-8 firing a full load of ammo. Unfortunately testing this theory would require doubling the yearly military budget to account for the destruction and carnage generated by the test.

Yes, yes #39, it was a Boyd design*. They actually DID start with an existing gun and built a plane that could carry it. *The plane, not the gun. John Boyd was also a big deal in the F-15 the F16 and Marine corps ground combat doctrine. Then the Army decided to do it the Marine way. Boyd is sort of a big deal. You have to write things so that the tone is right in the way people read it. And "bend over" doesn't work quite as well as an inside-joke reference because your mind has to think a bit more about what's being referenced. Also, phrasing it in the form of a question ads to the humor. I only know this because I took Comedy 101 at the Ace Community College of Movies, Humor and War Porn. You know, if her parents had any inclination she would be born that way or talk that way as an adult they would be giving each other high-fives for flushing her down the medical waste bin. 192 Theoretically an A-10 at max airspeed will be brought to below stall speed by the GAU-8 firing a full load of ammo.
In the airshow demos I've seen, the A-10 is always hitting ground targets from a steep angle. So, I'll raise your theory and say that an A-10 can be kept aloft by firing a full load of ammo. Posted by: t-bird at February 15, 2013 06:21 PM (FcR7P) ----- The theory was from the test engineers at Edwards AFB in the mid-late 90s. Just some rough calculations from watching the A-10 slow down while firing the GAU-8 with high speed tracking cameras. They estimated the the airspeed reduction per 100rds fired. With a stall of around 120 kts IIRC, a full load of ammo fired would stall the aricraft probably from crusing speed (not top speed as i said earlier, its been a while) I wasn't working directly on the A-10 but was at Edwards a few times in the mid-late 1990s. 201 Anyone know if the GU-8 is the same as the chain gun in the MH-47 Chinook helicopters?
I was on one and they fired that sucker off. Shit it went through ammo faster than shit through a goose. The noise would scare the shit out of you. Posted by: Billy Bob, The guy who drinks in SC at February 15, 2013 06:42 PM (wR+pz) ------ The Chinook uses Dillon guns aka mini Guns aka the M-134D, the inside joke is that the D is for Dillon Aero the manufacturer of the 4th iteration of the mini gun. dillon developed a Re-design of the feeder-delinker (FDL) assembly that didn't need 4-8 hours of shop time to clear a jam. It uses 7.62mm NATO rounds and spits brass so quick it's supposed to be used with a specialized brass catcher to keep operators from falling out the door from spent rounds. @194 - Goalkeeper's been around 20 years, not in USN though.
The 75mm tank gun in some of the WWII B-25s could have brought it below stall speed if it hadn't been manually loaded..I think some Mosquitos and maybe Typhoons had autoloading 6pdrs (57mm) Posted by: JEM at February 15, 2013 07:30 PM (o+SC1) 205
Flew that sucker for over 20 years...
What amazed me most about the gun (besides the fact that I could hit a soft-skinned vehicle at 3 miles and still heat up the target's interior to something like 1000 degrees) was the rapidity of the firing/cease firing sequence: 1) Squeeze to the first detent: camera starts recording/LASTE stabilization starts initial elevator movement to steady the platform. 2) Squeeze to the second detent and LASTE kicks in fully, gun begins rotation to about 3200-3600 RPM and fires 72 rounds per second. API mixed with HEI goes down range and I could put everything in a 25 foot circle at 5000 feet. The depleted Uranium API rounds have no explosive--the kinetic energy is enough to flash ignite the oxygen inside a tank as the penetrator turns the armor molten. Each HEI round contains the explosive weight equivalent of a hand grenade. 3) Let go of the trigger and the gun stops firing (that's immediate). 4a) In less than 2 seconds (~1.5 actually), the barrels stop rotating forward. 4b) They reverse, unloading all the breeches 4c) A fresh round is loaded into the first firing barrel and the gun is ready for the next pass. 4d) While you're repositioning, the barrels rotate about 120 degrees, cycling them to the ram air portion of the structure around the gun to keep them cool (and thus more accurate). The rounds are in a continuous feed loop out of and into the ammo can (the big round thing at the back. Live rounds feed out the front, spent brass is fed back into the can at the rear...we don't eject brass--it would goon up the jet's weight and balance to jettison that much material. As far as the aerodynamics go, yeah the thrust of the gun (18,000lbs when firing) is equivalent to the engines' forward thrust (both of 'em--shut UP Eagle/Viper drivers...). On the pre-LASTE jets, yes, it would cause the nose of the jet to "tuck" (move down) slightly and you had to compensate with back pressure on the stick. Now, not so much.
However, the jet ain't gonna fall out of the sky. Sheer inertia makes this a physical impossibility. You might slow a teensy bit but you don't fire long enough to make any significant change to air or ground speed. Posted by: Panther 01 at February 16, 2013 08:53 AM (7393o) 207
"Anyone know if the GU-8 is the same as the chain gun in the MH-47 Chinook helicopters?"
Chain guns are entirely different from the Vulcan, Mini-gun, Avenger and other rotary barrel guns. They're (generally) single barreled guns, similar to the mechanical machine guns of the 19th century, such as the Gardner. The actual "chain gun" uses an endless operating chain, like the chain on a bicycle, to cycle the bolt. Posted by: Deanimator at February 16, 2013 06:08 PM (2YnwF) 208
"The 75mm tank gun in some of the WWII B-25s could have brought it below
stall speed if it hadn't been manually loaded..I think some Mosquitos and maybe Typhoons had autoloading 6pdrs (57mm) " The Germans used the Bordkanone BK 7,5 75mm self-loading gun in their Henschel HS-129 twin engined ground attack plane. An interesting concept, but fatally crippled by a lousy plane with underpowered (and often sabotaged) French engines, poor visibility, and a cockpit so cramped that some of the engine instruments had to be mounted EXTERNALLY on the sides of the engine nacelles. You know, I flew flew around with one on these with (usually) 1174 rds of 30 mm for 20+ yrs and was never once seized by the temptation to shoot up schools or innocent 3rd parties just because I could.
