Pulls two pistols, points the right at the gaggle of gypsy curb jumpers, shoots the guy on the ground three times with the left. Posted by: Buzzsaw at February 15, 2013 12:16 PM (81UWZ)

That's different. Radioactivity from atomic bomb tests? Sure. From a meteor? Nope. That meteor has probably been flying for millions, if not billions,of years, long enough that any hot (i.e., short-half life) radionuclides, the ones that emit a lot of radiation per unit time, would long since have decayed. Long-lived radionuclides by definition are those that decay, and thereby emit radioactive particles and gamma rays, slowly, and so are not much of a hazard.

Well, the area's hot from atomic bomb tests only in the same sense that Hanford is hot from tests as well.

Chelyabinsk is associated with Mayak, the former USSR's nuclear weapons facility from the early days of weapons production. In a number of ways, Mayak is analogous to our Hanford, with hints of Savannah River and Rocky Flats. And the place is highly contaminated in areas from those operations. In fact, the Kyshtym incident occurred right in that neck of the woods when a storage tank with a bunch of nitrates lost cooling, overheated and exploded.

291 What is infinitely cool to me is that we live in this tiny little solar system and revolving around the sun once is a big deal -- another year has passed. But think of a child's spinner with four blades. You blow on it and it revolves. We live in a spiral galaxy where we are a microscopic dot on the edge of one of four spirals. Continually revolving -- except it takes us 200,000,000 years to return to the same spot -- which is a 'cosmic' year. There probably is a gigantic black hole at the center of our galaxy which is part of the energy driving the movement. Now we may be returning to the same spot at the end of a cosmic year or we may actually have -- like an enormous game of musical chairs -- moved one seat closer to the black hole.

I wish they'd give up this storm naming crap. It's embarrassing. Anyone who's lived in a storm-prone region just deals with it. Giving the storms cutesy names is the equivalent of giving someone an award for not sucking at their job. it makes a completely normal occurrence into something much bigger than it is.

The dinosaurs were unable to compensate for climactic shifts by creating clothing or shelter. Man will be around a long time, absent any global and 100% fatal disease, that is carried on the wind. Even a huge meteor strike will simply send us back to the stone age. That is not a death sentence for humanity. Our civilization would be over, but the pre-glacial melt societies are all wiped out too. Who knows how magnificent those were?

There is no feasible means for wiping out all humans other than a malicious intelligence (be it machine or alien), or an impossibly virulent disease that can be transported on the air alone.

You actualy need both now days... theres so much background noise in the spectrum from all the various frequencies used hetrodyning and creating sidebands that useable range has decreased...

Had HUGE problems with that during Desert Storm... we had so many ships in the Gulf, radiating so much energy, that returns were getting lost in the ambient noise (major reason I slept in my Radar Room....).

Point is though.... its possible... but the question then becomes... 'IF' you know its coming, do you tell the populace? Creating Panic? Do you tell your Emergency services folks (knowing that word will leak?)... or do you sit on the info, and hope the populace never finds out you knew?

As they stepped onto dry land, and into the arms of their loved ones some couldn't contain their excitement. Carnival then chartered a caravan of buses to transport folks out of Mobile, Ala. To add insult to injury, at least one of those buses became stranded on the way to New Orleans, reports CBS News correspondent Anna Werner."

They were still arguing about how old the earth was back then. Physicists at the time thought that the Earth could not be more than 17,000 years old because a ball of carbon and oxygen the size of the Sun could not keep burning longer than that and produce the amount of light and heat that it does.

( to be fair, Lord Kelvin retracted his famous mis-statement when he was shown the numbers for newly discovered nuclear fission )
