Happy Friday.

The NYTimes and green automaker Tesla are in a bitchfight over a test drive utilizing Tesla's East Coast charging stations. NYTimes' reporter says the car broke down and cites misleading info from Tesla as well as unexpectedly cold temperatures. Tesla says the reporter set out to sabotage the test drive. Root for injuries.

A meteor strike in Chelyabinsk, Russia, caused about 400 injuries. The second video here demonstrates how people had plenty of time to rush to look at the phenomenon out the windows only to have the windows shatter in their faces.

Have a good long weekend.

39 Hello, ‘rons and ‘ronettes and fellow subjects of Alextopia (all hail to Her Imperial Stompyness). Thanks for the morning briefing, Gabe and Vic. And thanks to all of you who’ve bought a copy or downloaded my book, The Director’s Cut: A Theda Bara Mystery. I do hope you’ve enjoyed it, and if you have, would be very grateful for a small review, either on your own blogs (which leaves out Allen G) or on Amazon.

Here’s a quick story to go with your morning java:

In the first rush of talking pictures, Hollywood scoured the Broadway stages and almost anyone, from leading man to chorus girl, could be snapped up if they were deemed able to “talk.”

Among that first wave were the “First Couple of the Stage,” Alfred Lunt and Lynn Fontanne. Both vain and self-centered, they were concerned that their first screen test show them at their best, and Lunt was understandably nervous when his wife returned from seeing the rushes. “How was I?” he asked.

“You were wonderful, of course, darling,” Fontanne answered. “You’ll have to change your makeup – you looked like you hadn’t any lips – but me! Oh, Alfred, it was awful! My makeup was all smeary, my hair was a mess, my mouth was flapping and my hands looked like blocks of wood waving in the air! I look like a scarecrow on the screen! Oh, darling, what will I do?”

Lunt, who had been closely watching his wife all through this, narrowed his eyes, rubbing his chin thoughtfully. Finally, he spoke.

“No lips, eh?”

I hope you all have a wonderful weekend. For my fellow NE morons, let’s hope the weekend storm fizzles out before it gets to us. I’ll see you all on Monday with another story.

Fontanne picked up the phone. "Yes?" Then she turned to Lunt. "It's for you, dear," she smiled, and walked off the stage.

That article and the bitchfest after proves why electric cars simply are not ready for real world usage. It gets cold out. People need to run other errands on trips. People get caught in traffic. What would have happened if the driver got a call that a family member was ill and he had to get to a hospital where no chargers were located? Hell, if that had been a gas powered vehicle that ran out of gas, when the tow guy showed up he would have put in a gallon or two and the guy could have then driven to a nearby gas station to fill up. Not to mention that the refueling would have taken a few minutes to full, not an hour to maybe 60%.

Right now, all electric vehicles are toys, not practical usage vehicles.

There's good argument to be made that American Blacks are culturally different from, say, African or Caribbean Blacks. Like Italians and Spaniads, so to speak. But the language is all screwed up by the Left, so no one can speak precisely to address these differences except for them.

I gotta wonder if the Ruskies are making shit up. There's a report buried in the Drudge link that they 'intercepted' and fired on the asteroid and blew it into smaller pieces.

Since asteroids travel about eight times the speed of a bullet it sounds a little incredible. Plus, the amount of energy released by a single large collision or many small collisions is essentially the same, given the physics of kinetic and potential energy.

When I was stationed in Italy, we would often have local crimes reported in the Stars and Stripes. And occasionally the perp would be described as an African American from northern Africa.
I keep thinking that in order to be an African American, you need to be able to trace your lineage to the African continent. And be an American.
Of course, this presented an issue for a friend of mine. Born on a US Military base, on the African continent, and being a US citizen. As both parents were white, apparently he could not self identify as an African American.

The Lunt-Fontanne opened in 1910 as the Globe, and in the 30s was turned into a movie theater. When it was converted back in the 50s, it was named for Alfred and Lynne in honor of all their contributions to stage arts (despite my stories, they were a devoted couple and were great champions of youg actors and playwrights).

I saw Titanic, the musical, there when it ran in 1997.

I propose, that a white, born in Johannesburg, who emigrates to the US and becomes an American citizen, would have a more legitimate claim to the AA title than some born & raised inner city black from Detroit, who probably couldn't find Africa on a map.

On the other hand, battery tech. is notoriously not advancing as fast as these companies would have you believe, and further, did he actually need to have the car towed? Because if he did when it died, it seems to me that Tesla is the one lying. The fact of the matter is he could not drive the car in a normal manner and make it to his destination on a cold day, because of the cold.

Not to mention that, because the heater in that thing runs entirely off the battery, he had to freeze himself to get as far as he did by turning off the heat, in the middle of winter.

The most likely ABM would have been the SA-10 Grumble which accelerates at 2kM/sec and has a straight up max altitude ceiling of 30Km. So the engagement window would be extremely small. 117 The meteor explosion in Russia was the equivalent of a tactical nuke - about 3.6 Kilotons. The World War Two A-bombs which killed about 70,000 people each were about 4 to 5 times as powerful as the Russian meteor blast. The only reason that the city survived and thousands weren't killed is that the explosion of the meteor took place about six miles up. According to the article I read the meteor was estimated to weigh about 10 tons and was moving at about 55 Km/sec. I wonder if today's blast knocked any planes out of the air. By the way there was a fatality in the Tunguska blast of 1908, so the crap that "nobody has ever been killed by a meteor" is just that; crap.

If you go to the JPL risk page you will note that the scientists there say that anything up to 50 meters in diameter "is too small to cause damage on the ground" - what a crock. A 50 meter diameter asteroid would weigh about 150,000 tons - at a velocity of 20 Km/sec (average collision speed) it would be the equivalent of about a 7 megaton H-bomb. That is where JPL starts talking about "damage on the ground" . Seven megatons would wipe out most any city on the planet - the heat alone would give 3rd degree burns to anyone exposed to it out to a range of about 6 miles. Surely the government wouldn't be lying to us about the actual danger of impact events could it?

You're welcome, Nighthawk, and thank you very much for the compliment. I don't know any Myrna Loy off the top of my head, but here's a Robinson:

Many people don’t know that Robinson didn’t like guns, which is ironic, considering his screen reputation. During the filming of Little Caesar, every time he had to shoot, he would wince and scrunch up his eyes. At last, director Mervyn LeRoy (a very underappreciated director, IMO) had to tape Robinson’s eyelids open for any scene where he shot a gun. And yes, he was quite different from his on-screen persona, a very cultured polyglot whose hobby was collecting fine art, much like Vincent Price.

I’ll give you a Myrna Loy story or two on Monday.

140 - "The NYTimes and green automaker Tesla are in a bitchfight over a test drive utilizing Tesla's East Coast charging stations."

Sometimes the irony quite literally writes itself. And here's the thing (another layer of irony):

Liberals are so foggy headed they would not be able even to grasp the various layers of irony with that story. You could sit them down, using a flow chart, and even a puppet show, and still they would not get it.

Taxpayer-subsidized "green" car actually should be painted yellow, for lemon? Whatever, dude. Look, Jon Stewart just made fun of a Republican, ha ha.

You have kids driving Toyota Priuses their parents bought them to "anti-corporate" protests and then tweeting about them with their iPhones.

Every day on college and university campuses across the nation space cadet liberal arts professors tell their students about how great Obama is, and about how horrible Republicans are, and at least 50% of those students will graduate and instantly will join the ranks of the long-term unemployed, the underemployed, or those who are not bothering even to search for work.

It goes on and on.

To a larger point, though, what does it say about how truly hosed we are that people who are so terminally loopy run the country?

"New York State’s new gun law (NY SAFE Act) includes the ability for pistol permit holders to request that their information be kept private and confidential by completing and submitting a State Police “Opt-Out” form.
The New York State Police has stated that the “Opt-Out” form would be created and made available by February 15th. In preparation of this and in an effort to provide this new form as quickly and conveniently as possible for our customers, we are encouraging all Monroe County Pistol Permit Holders to submit your current e-mail address to our "Opt-Out" Form Registry. When this form is made available, we will send you an electronic version of the form so you can complete and return it to the County Clerk’s Office.
It is important to note that, according to the NY SAFE Act, Pistol Permit holders will have 60 days after the forms are made available by the State Police to submit completed forms to the Clerks’ Office. Again, we have been informed that the form will be made available by February 15th."

So yes, everyone in NYS should opt-out, I guess. Of course that gives them a nice little list if they didn't have one already.

No, I don't just believe the NYT. I do believe the data- which shows that the reporter was wrong, but a) not that he was lying and b) his account was closer to the truth than Musk's.

Personally I'm taking the stance on this that I do with the Syria conflict- let's arm both sides. But just because someone dumps some fancy graphs and says, "These show he was lying!" doesn't mean the graphs actually show the other guy was lying.

Exactly incorrect, with the Model-S. You're right about the Tesla Roadster, but the Model-S is supposed to be their entry into the "Family Sedan" market. They're expecting to sell to CEOs to drive in to work to impress potential customers/partners.

So, no, you may not be punching in at 7, but you expect to make it to and from work.

I wonder if the teacher encouraged/discouraged the window viewing.

Speaking of deaths at school, getting away from windows for safety still applies in the more recent application if given a school shooter taking aim, though huddling under one's desk once a shooter's in the room is dubious as a safety measure.

At what point will economical windows generally consist of a more shatterproof material? Do clear plastics amalgamate with glass, improve insulation as well?

"May" have? Really?

But I can tell (for instance) about the speed that she's pretty spot on. There may be some discrepancy between what the reporter said and what actually happened, but his story there conforms more closely to the data than what Tesla reported. I could see some of that just by eye, without even examining the data particularly closely.

The NYTs reporter lied (perhaps not intentionally).

Ah! The old "unintentional lie." Got it. We also call that "a mistake." In this case, I'm more inclined to call it "the truth, but the data he had was imperfect."

But that really brings us to the main two points. One, who has more to gain here, Tesla or NYT? Oh, sure, the "Oh, the Tesla Model-S didn't perform as promised!" might be good to sell a few extra newspapers, but it's not like it's going to make this guy's career. On the other hand, it could really hurt Tesla.

Tesla has more at stake, making their motives more questionable.

Two, the question is if the car can perform like a car worth $100,000. I think, even if he hadn't had any trouble with the car at all, I could say without fear of contradiction: no.

Except that's exactly what Tesla is marketing the Model-S for. It's supposed to be an entry into the mainstream auto market. It doesn't matter that it would suck for that purpose.

If all they were interested in were the "Malibu Brunch Set" they wouldn't be taking the line of argument they are against the NYT. Further, when initially challenged on the reporting, the NYTs stood by it, asserting it to be entirely factually accurate and mistake free.

Except for the parts that revealed outright falsehoods, the data generally jives with what the reporter said. Face it bro, the data pwns your attempt to defend a NYTs reporter. Because it reveals factual misstatements by the reporter.

240 Except for the parts that revealed outright falsehoods, the data
generally jives with what the reporter said. Face it bro, the data pwns
your attempt to defend a NYTs reporter. Because it reveals factual
misstatements by the reporter.

Except that he didn't say he drove on cruise the whole time. He said when he was told to slow down that he did- and set it on cruise.

As for the data itself- I know I've never been misled by my GPS data AT ALL. So of course it must be 100% accurate.

I'm not saying that he got it all right. I'm saying there's an explanation other than "lying," and that when the data is examined it conforms more closely to what the reporter said than what Tesla says.

And, again, if the point of the Model-S is to be a competitor against other luxury sedans: even if Tesla's account were 100% accurate, it would show that it fails at that.

Just as ridiculous, private industry wanting to harness the asteroid they project being worth 15billion dollars in minerals.

In the '60s, Dr. Strangelove made an iconic image of a bronco billy riding the bomb. Now NASA is attempting to capitalize on the Bruce Willis flick. Talk about a death wish, instead of letting it pass by, blasting the earth with millions of asteroid fragments because some industry wants those minerals for their own to sell to whoever survives. Let the tinfoil hat elitists shoot themselves on their rocket ride to rule the asteroid, removing themselves from earth.

Yes, but it's probability of earth impact is 1:10,303,000

Lets put that in perspective: that is one chance in 10,303,000 of billions of people dying and civilization being destroyed on a specific day a little over two years from now. Other than that asteroid what would you put the odds against that happening on that specific day?

This is not likely. Hubby is a "car guy" and is in the auto industry. There had been open speculation for years amongst industry people that Tesla was most likely a big Ponzi scheme. That was before they got their government subsidy, of course. But Musk was known to be terrible with the money he got on deposits for unbuilt cars, and it's likely the green subsidies he got from the Feds went into paying off the loans he took out to keep that company afloat for years.

I think they're estimating that the explosion was 6 miles up. By the time it actually hit the ground, it may not have had enough energy to leave anything other than a "small" crater.

Of course, there's also the definition of "small." Are we talking "VW Beetle" small, or "bread box" small? Going the other way, are we defining "half-a-city-block" as "small?"

well, the big boom in the SMODVID is the thing actually blowing up, not a sonic boom

the reports say the thing was traveling 33,000 mph, which is Mach43 (speed of sound x 43)

that's twice as fast as manned space flight

Well in this case it is the shockwave of the thing entering Earth's atmosphere at speed once it went through dense enough air to generate the wave...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sonic_boom

The acceleration to speed is not the causative so much as the object being above trigger speed for air density...

meaning if you had an object already zooming at speed it would still generate the wave once atmospheric density was manipulated....

BOOM!

We grew up at an air base where every once in a while F-4 pilots would get excited....

407 Guy goes into an expensive bar and orders a classy drink. After sinking it he says to the bartender, Say this is a really nice place, I should come here more often. Bartender says Thank you sir , Glad you like it here. Guy says Where's The Men's Room ? etc

Guy comes back from mens room. Says This bar is a terrible place. It should be bulldozed and everyone working here Fired. Really upset.
Bartender says Gee Sir what 's the matter ? 3 minutes ago you couldn't say enough good stuff about this bar.
Guy says, Well I was in the can having a drain when some big guy put a gun to my head and said Give me a **** j*b or I'll blow your head off !
Bartender says So what happened then ?
Guy says WELL, YOU DIDN'T HEAR A SHOT , DID YOU ??

Back when I heard this joke everyone was going around for weeks saying "Did you hear a shot?"

408 "VDH looks at former civilizations that collapsed. Much of what he says in here is wrong but it is interesting anyway."

What was wrong? Seemed pretty spot on to me. Granted I don't have VDH's credentials as a classical historian, writer, or conservative commentator, but everything he said lines up with just about everything else I've ever read.

And the sum of the square roots of any two sides of an isosceles triangle is equal to the square root of the remaining side!

One could make that argument in all seriousness. Of course, the Injuns lack of effective border controls really worked out well for them.

413 What I really love about these videos are the attitudes of the Russian drivers. They're all like, "Oh, cool, giant flaming meteor." I feel like if this had happened over the East or West Coast of the USA, all the low-information voters would be running around in panic and brainless hacks of the MFM would be shrieking hysterically

Nah, we don't want to take a chance on an losing an emerging majority voting block member. First class medical care for anchor baby mamas, that's the ticket. All you seniors on Medicare can take a number and go to the back of the line!

Wouldn't NASA be expected to have something about the Russian event on
their website? Couldn't this be used to further Islam in some way?

421 From the streaking horizon videos and contrails it clearly looked like it was 1 piece, that then broke into 2 large pieces that flew side-by-side for a long time, so I expect we will find the second entry wound soon.
I think that "Zinc" factory might have collapsed due to poor construction+overloading by the companies industrial expansion and then the sonic over-pressure was too much and it simply broke. Maybe a football sized hypersonic-roid helped at best.
