Question: What Do You Think of This Quickfire Format?

I don't really expect an answer here but was yesterday going too fast?

I obviously didn't have much to say yesterday, so quickie posts were going to be the extent of my output; but should the posts, thin as they were, have come slower anyway, so you had more opportunity for a thread with active comments?

If so, what I should do is maybe do this sometimes, but put all of these in draft, and then just start firing them out later.

Let me know your thoughts on the Instapundit-style rolling headlines. Sometimes I guess I just feel like doing that, but maybe not so fast.

6 Mandatory content-free response. But I guess I would prefer a little more meaty content in the posts, so that they all don't degenerate into competing open threads. Honestly, I do try to read all the thread headers, unless they center on a subject really remote from my interests, like, for instance, gaming. But then I won't comment on a gaming thread, either, until it has already gone off-topic.

Cheating?

Well, it's like this: "The Conversation" was supposed to be more conversational, more banterish, like twitter. it isn't working out that way -- yet-- and that means I wind up having to do far more over there (full blog posts) than I intended to.

What I intended to do was just use my twitter stuff over there. but the format seems to fight that.

we had a conference call yesterday about this, about trying to make the format more conversational and less "Group BLog."

As it stands it's much, much more of a draw on my time than I had intended it to be. Which is why I'm doing the 'just put up an ace post over there and direct people over" thing.

I get that, but realistically, I don't have all that much to say. Every post is really a mix of "Author's thoughts" and "just a convenient place for commenter's thoughts." Sometimes I just don't have any of the former, but figure I can still provide a space for the latter.

35 I don't know if this is just a defense of my own laziness and lack of realization, but i can tell when a blogger is writing just to fill up his in-his-own-standard of 600 words per post.

You can tell when very obvious filler is being packed in just to make that formal 600-700 word template.

A short post-- headline and link -- is just a confession I have nothing interesting to say myself and won't pretend I do.

37 Hi, ace!

What about saving up some ideas in draft format, then you and/or the cobloggers releasing them at points throughout the day? I know that, in the mornings especially, the Headline and News threads can get awfully long and stale. Maybe save the newsier of the posts until the afternoon, your usual posting time, but have some less newsy stuff, or more tabloidy stuff if you will, saved up to sprinkle throughout the day? Maybe save up a few posts like the earlier Batman one so that, on a particularly slow day, BOOM! you can drop it like it's hot.

You could have three topics - Politics,Cultural, Miscellaneous - per day with the exchanges taking place in the comments along with the hoi polloi.

Quickly paced works.

Sometimes the news is just that.

And, some news items are much trivial, versus others that should require a bit more time to absorb.

Also depends on how long the posts are, and how many links to jump out and read.

If you are looking for some real input, a serious conversation and ideas, leave it longer and spread out the next post.

You've been doing this for years. It would be safe to say you know what you're doing, and what you want from this blog.

1000 word metaphysical rants are great, as are short, smart-assed posts.

Poison.

Also, a "The Least Stupid Shit I Said On Twitter Today" compilation post might be cool every...night? I dunno. I never see that stuff. I imagine it's "night" stuff.

ace, the problem with too many posts in succession is that the comments can't get rolling. On the other end are the posts that stay on top so long they get stale. My estimate is that the average time between posts is something on teh order of between 50 minutes and 1 hour 20 minutes. Those give enough time to marinate, but not grow stale.

Maybe you can develop a bot that can space them so you can just write them and they will auto-post at good intervals. Make the cobs get their posts in teh same cue and if there are a lot of them, shorten the time a bit, Nothing less than 30 minutes, really though, that's about the minimum.

PS - this is all friendly advice, not some raving lunatic demands. Do what you like and we pretty much have to adapt.

92 I think the real key to success is having more co-bloggers doing a daily routine. You step in once in a while with some red meat. At your own pace.

So you have an early thread a co-blog throws up. Keeps the east coast morons happy for a while. Ben takes a dump. That's good. Maybe an early afternoon thing by another like Gabe. Purple Av is good.

I've been wondering if I should hit you up to co-blog with a weekly 'tech-toy of the week' kind of thing that would get you some change from Amazon. Because there are a lot of things out there that can both save morons money and help the AoS overhead. Win-win.

Posted by: Schrödinger's cat at February 15, 2013 04:11 PM (feFL6)

93 I dislike when a good conversation dies out quickly. If there were some way to have two or three of the most active or, most recent, threads posted side by side, that would be great. But I suppose that involves reformatting and adding a column or two. Otherwise, scrolling headlines might be pretty cool.

95 Time release. The blog goes dead for five hours, then wham we get four posts in a hour.

I think scheduling is something the HQ could use. Now we have Gabe in the Morning, then the news dump, which is fairly new, then nothing for hours.

Sometimes a mid day post but usually nothing till you post around 3:00. Then we get four quick posts in a hour and it's dead till the ONT.

Commentating is what makes the HQ the HQ. Fresh meat is what we want!

All day long! Greedy moron pigs!

I thought they were saving for a bloodbath at the end of season 3 but then Raylan shot zero people.

They do come up with innovative ways to have OTHER people shoot people, or have raylan shoot people without shooting them (bean bag ammuition, shooting the car's airbag).

well that's what I mean, I don't mean "I'm not writing long essays anymore."

Like when I'm not writing long, I can either do quickies or struggle to do a medium one (which will probably add little). So, as far as the throwaway posts -- medium or quick?

Okay, this is long, but thus is the nature of the clown joke:

There once was a little kid named Billy who loved clowns. I mean LOVED them. He had posters of them all over his wall and pictures of them everywhere.

One day his parents took him to the Circus to see all of the clowns. He was so excited! He never saw one up close before! In the middle of the show, a tiny little car came out and out came 20 clowns! He was cheering so loud he couldn't speak for a couple minutes. Just then, the Leader of the Clowns took a microphone and asked for a volunteer. Billy raised his hand and shouted ''Me! Me!'' The clown looked around and said ''You!'' as he pointed at Billy. He was so happy!

Billy joined the clown on the floor. The clown looked down at him and asked, ''Are you the horse's nose?'' Billy said ''No...'' ''Are you the horse's ears?'' ''No...'' Then the clown got an evil look in his eye as he said ''Then you must be the horse's ass!'' The whole tent shook with laughter, and Billy cried his eyes out. He couldn't believe a clown made fun of him like that! He swore revenge!

Billy grew up, he went to college, got a job, got married, and had a few kids, but still never forgot what that clown did to him. One morning he saw an ad in the paper for the same circus, and decided to go. He knew the PERFECT insult to get him back! When he told his wife and kids he was going his kids asked if they could goto the circus with him. He calmly said ''No. Daddy has something he needs to do there.'' In the middle of the show, a little car came out and out came about 20 clowns. The crowd cheered, except for Billy. The Leader of the Clowns took a microphone. It was the same Clown! Billy was so excited that he could now get revenge!

The clown asked for a volunteer. Billy calmly raised his hand. The clown picked him! Billy joined the clown on the floor. The clown said ''Are you the horse's nose?'' Billy stayed calm and said ''No.'' The clown asked ''Are you the horse's ears?'' Billy replied ''No.'' Then the clown said ''Then you must be the horse's ass!''

Billy knew his time had come. As the crowd laughed and everyone cheered, his anger grew. Now was the time for revenge. He looked deep into the clown's eyes and said...

''Fuck you, Clown.''

no he's right-- Andrew always wanted you guys for commenters. that was a driving thing with him. Several times before his death he pitched me, like, "What would it take...?" to get this blog as part of Breitbart.

Partly for me, of course, but largely because he wanted the commenters.

191 The "Fuck you, clown." joke killed me when I first heard it.
Next day I tried to tell it to a group of people. Total failure. It's a long joke and halfway through I realized -- nobody is going to laugh at this. Long jokes are hard to pull off.
Partly it was the setting. I heard it at the end of a long night of drinking. Everybody was tired and relaxed -- and patient. Plus the guy who told it had a really mellow, low key personality. Which made it funnier coming from him.
Long jokes seem to have died in the internet age. Nobody has the attention span.

Course, HA is owned by Summit and they have a staff. Insty probably has an assistant, but mostly it's him. The HQ is yourselfs and the co bloggers. Seems like you have the morning covered and the evening covered.

What you need is 11:00 to 10:00PM to cover. You are working 2-6? Then we get nothing after dinner til the ONT.

230 Yeah, that's the gist of the Fuck You, Clown joke. It's a shaggy dog story with a Fuck You ending. The version I heard was super long. Guy really dragged it out. In the one I head the kid was a fat kid and the clown did the old -- You're so fat, when you sit around the house, you sit *around* the house.
Little kid then devotes the rest of his life to getting revenge on the clown. Studies insults from history, becomes a touring stand-up insult comic. Devotes every waking second to trying to track down the clown who insulted him, etc, etc.

I brought it up cause one of the most important things in a lot of Breitbart/Ace style political posts is telling the Left - "Fuck You, Clown."

262 no he's right-- Andrew always wanted you guys for commenters. that was a driving thing with him. Several times before his death he pitched me, like, "What would it take...?" to get this blog as part of Breitbart.

Partly for me, of course, but largely because he wanted the commenters.

You may remember that I revealed this in a comment and Andrew got pissed about it.

267 I brought it up cause one of the most important things in a lot of Breitbart/Ace style political posts is telling the Left - "Fuck You, Clown."
Posted by: Flatbush Joe at February 15, 2013 04:36 PM (ZPrif)

They had a Two and Half Men episode using the Fuck you, Clownstructure except it was a formerly fat girl in Highschool that Allen only befriended and Charlie made fun of. She spent her entire life after highschool to make herself superhot so she could seduce both Allen and Charlie and then reject them at last second.

Ace, do you earn revenue based upon ad clicks?

I don't know, but I would expect the advertiser pays a flat fee to run the ad for a set period. Ad clicks usually are for Google or larger sites. They are hard to do.

276 As to Andrew wanting us, it's plain to see that over at Breitbart these days, commenters aren't numero uno with them.

1) have to sign up every browser session to comment unlike umpteen other disqus engine driven commenting on other blogs.

2) they use that style of commenting where you can't scroll the the entire comments, you have to keep loading and loading it bit at a time. This means you can't quickly find a previous comment you've made to see if someone's responded to it.

3) Wayyyy tooo much moderation. I've had comments moderated and I have yet to figure out why. Last year, I had a comment that got over 600 likes but Breitbart took it down (because I presume some lefties were offended as much as it was liked. Not a good system and I resent the hell out of it.)

4) they've got too much uniformity between sections. Why bother? Just call it BIG and be done with it. Each section just has different headlines. Bland and boring.

I'd like to believe that if Andrew was still there, they would be better. I don't know but I'm not interested in fighting their format.

So. Don't ever change Ace. Too many places get popular and big and suddenly think that now that they're a success, they need to change. To me, when your popularity is increasing is not the time to change formats.

I don't even mind the clunkiness of the commenting system. (anymore) compared to others, it's much more preferable AND it's unique. Makes me feel like an insider when newbies come on and complain.

You do what you think will work Ace. You've done ok so far.

277 here's an unrelated suggestion: incorporate more funny pics in your posts [/i[

I used to blog. In fact JWF and I started at about the exact same month. I watched his numbers, but mine were better. I had really good photoshops to go with every post. He'd borrow one once in a while and I was cool with that. Pictures are good, really good. Especially laugh inducing ones.

Anyway, after a while he brought in more co-blogs and his numbers drifted higher then mine. Because people like to chat, and I only had one post per day, while he had six or so.

So I think that pics are really good, but lots of content per day is better, but pics are good.

279 The themed posts are actually a great feature. Book thread, gun thread, gaming thread etc. might want to do just a bit more of that. Naturally, they all become UptonGunSquidDennehyPudding threads, but having some consistent themes during the week is a good way to keep us entertained.

I'd love to see a weekly caption contest thread.

280 people who are the tip-top in their professions consider their jobs "recharging and love." Because their personal interest aligns with their professional interest, they are unstoppable in their career and seem to everyone else to be superhuman.

Obviously I'm not going to make that particular cut.

Posted by: ace at February 15, 2013 04:31 PM (LCRYB)

I agree to disagree. I was one of them. Even if I worked 80hrs a week, I still made time -- seriously, for recharging and love. My required proportions weren't the same as others' might be.

But, the down time and away time was crucial to staying on top.

Granted, my industry was game development. Which sounds fun in itself (and it was for me: working for engineers/programmers, artists, animators, and managers), but you do not sit around and play games all day unless you are a tester.

Playing games at night with my husband, or getting to a movie or restaurant was the recharging and love. In the ballpark, but not my job. And, I did not my companies games all the time.

I have also authored a book. Same deal. As with you, there are cycles of writing. Cycles of inspiration. Goes the same for painters, etc. I would allow my artists to work "when they wanted" at times, because I knew they couldn't produce on demand. Same for you. It's usually a signal to do something else with your brain. Listen to it.

You did fine. Change it up so we get some excitement in our lives. We don't always have time for War and Peace or Movie Reviews, so rapid fire is wonderful.

284 I like the Morning News Dump approach. But, not as much as Ace and Co-blogger's input via full posts. If you don't have much to add, just give a bunch of links.

Posted by: Jimmy Doolittle at February 15, 2013 05:20 PM (OA8sl)

285 Rapid fire posts, especially with little in the way to generate comments unique to that thread, would allow the morons to move commenting on the threads that did have commenting worthy subjects all through the other threads.

It could, kinda, be your thing.

Keeping up with which conversation is going on where would be the measure of a true moron veteran of the site.

286 A couple of lines and out they go. That's the format everyone seems to be adopting. Things are moving way too fast and there appears to be no time to think.
