5 WASHINGTON — There is something entirely appropriate about holding the State of the Union address on the same day as Mardi Gras.

One is a display of wretched excess, when giddy and rowdy participants give in to reckless and irresponsible behavior.

The other is a street festival in New Orleans.

8 The Rush transcript over at Drudge is a fabulous read.

One excerpt that "kinda" sums it all up, but read the whole thing, it's worth it (unless you tuned in to the actual show):

So Obama is not at all connected to the tragic destruction of this country. He is seen as somebody who wants to fix it. It's the same thing as people seeing Colonel Sanders as a guy running a hospital to save chickens. Wouldn't compute. It wouldn't make any sense. But that's how he's viewed. Now, maybe one reason is that he's successfully blamed Bush all these years and the exit polling data last November, vast majority of people still do blame Bush for the economy, but it's more than that. It's that Obama never, ever, allows himself to be seen as governing. He is constantly campaigning.

In my opinion, they also see JEF as a celebrity. Celebrities cross a chasm to the unreal, but are accepted as such. THEY can be rich, play around, do wrong, break the law, but that is okay, because they are celebrities.

Yes, he's "always campaigning" and not "governing," but that is what celebrities do. Market themselves.

9 When Obama leaves the WH I hope the next POTUS makes him Ambassador to Libya.

'Cause I'm a bitch like that.

10 239 This means that for a lot of people paying the tax will be cheaper than buying insurance. And since the new law prevents insurance companies from denying you coverage or charging you more if you have a pre-existing condition, you can always buy a plan later if you develop an expensive medical condition.

Not a bug, a feature. Just one more brief rest stop on the way to the progressive utopia of Single Payor.

...and in the right thread this time, too.

Um, your doing it wrong. One was an Asian which is a group that a lot of, um... "folks" believe makes their minority group look bad. So they're fair game. See "LA Riots". Some "folks" went after Asian shops with a vengeance. Until the Asians took to the roofs of their shops with guns. Some of those guns were assault rifles. *gasp* Aslo, see Marion Barry's quote, "We got to do something about these Asians coming in and opening up
businesses and dirty shops. They ought to go. I’m going to say that

32 #20 What pisses me off about this is that Sanford will be the Akins of 2014. The hypocrite charge will be writ large, and jokes will about. And the War on Women meme will continue.

Eric Erickson is just trying to latch onto a sure winner in an election so he can act like he's a king-maker. He did that with Perry as well (and my big reservation about Perry is that he allowed that jerk to latch onto his campaign).

Bah.

33 >>>Second, we have a huge number of people whose only goal is to be famous, regardless of how.

Yes, which explains a lot of shoot-em-ups, even the gangbanger ones. I kinda wonder if it'll play out differently for future kids, though.

Like, my son is coming in June, God willing. He's going to be surrounded by cameras and digital tyranny from day one, and of course I'm going to tell him so, just like every other parent will be telling theirs. For us, its fearful - for them, its normal. So I'm going to be very mindful of showing him where he can get away from all that, the deep woods, the mountains. Places he can still have a modicum of liberty and ease with himself.

From there, I'm wondering how curious a life that will be. Whether he will consciously have a kind of double life, or if his generation will successfully find a way to rebel and change it all...

34 Back when Sanford was governor and the Graham wing of the State Republican Party was in charge they looked at impeaching him over the affair. When they found out that he was a lot more popular than Lindsay Graham they backed off.

This is why I say he will likely win that contest. Not only is he still popular but he also has a substantial war chest.

44 #26 "Makes you wonder if Reagan would have ever been President, if it weren't for his stint in Hollywood."

---------------------
I have a sinking feeling this might be true. People think they KNOW celebrities because they see them on TV all the time. Note how Dorner felt like he could give advice and criticism to people on cable news. Note how OJ and other celebs have escaped conviction for their crimes.

It's an unsettling thing to realize that if someone is famous, they can behave as they wish, and they will never be held to account.

Also, I am thinking Ashley Judd is more of a danger due to this phenomenon.
Maybe we should get McConnell to retire and run a Kentucky celebrity in his place.

And that is the problem. The people who control what gets displayed on television are a bunch of unrealistic dreamers at best, and a collection of socialist idiots at worst. Common sense is rooted in their political opposition, but they have the power to give marching orders to their armies of idiot voters.

Until we get "air" parity with the enemy, it will be impossible to solve this problem.

This would be an effective way to put gun ranges out of business because, I'm guessing, most insurance policies these days exclude bodily injury caused by lead. That means the range would have to pay damages out of pocket, so bye-bye range.

Interesting. The conflict between conservative Utah and the Muslims who would presumably flock there to take advantage would be an interesting show.

Abuse of the welfare system is nothing new, and will continue for as long as we have a welfare system.

80 #36 "A really bad idea. "

I don't see why it's a bad idea. Who people choose to marry has nothing whatsoever to do with you or me.

There's no particular reason for plural marriage to be illegal. If Utah's OK with it then the state laws should reflect the beliefs of the state's voters. I'd rather have laws that will be consistently and impartially enforced than make otherwise law-abiding polygamists into criminals.

81 Several have announced but they are virtual unknowns. I don't see all the cries of hypocrisy. Sanford was never much of a social con. He is a libertarian type Republican.

----

That's what I'd guessed. Given that situation, backing Sanford doesn't seem like a bad idea to me.

I think people tend to direct their anger at the endorsers when they back a flawed candidate rather than at the state party that fails to put up better alternatives.

This is in contrast to the Hatch vs Liljenquist primary battle, in which we had a very solid challenger who would have won in the general but the chattering classes (by and large) backed the dinosaur.

However, I think he got talked into declaring last time, when he wasn't ready (and as the problems he had showed). For example, having a back surgery during primary season was probably a bad idea, but it probably was necessary and had already been scheduled.

A proper declaration for presidency should have been done in Austin with he state capitol as a background, with a lot of cheering supporters. It should not have been done in an auditorium with Red State fans and not much else. Not enough oomph and made him look less impressive. Cannot help but feel that Erickson sort of engineered that for his own purposes.

86 This would be an effective way to put gun ranges out of business
because, I'm guessing, most insurance policies these days exclude bodily
injury caused by lead.

I don't see how you go after the gun range on that one. The range hired a contractor to do the remodel. Surely the contractor is the one liable for saying, "Hey, these guys work with hot, fast moving lead. I bet its all over the place. I need to charge them a higher price to cover the protective gear for my workers."

I'm a contractor (well: consultant, but it works the same in this regard)- for most things, my actual employer is responsible (making sure I have a computer that does what it needs to do, for instance. Seeing to it that I'm well trained and up-to-date on current technology. And so forth.). My client is responsible for many fewer things.

If I'm not provided adequate training or equipment, that's the fault of my employer, not my client.

98 Many things are bad for girls. Why would polygamy be appreciably worse?

----

They are encouraged (coerced) into marrying polygamists at a very young age. They tend to not have educational opportunities (often they are "home schooled" but really just means staying home to take care of the kids), meaning if they do manage to get out of the situation, they are unable to support themselves.

They type of polygamy we're talking about here is so tightly wrapped up into the religion and culture that getting married (young) is a path to salvation. It's coercion.

My Utah friends, some of whom have a sort of fondness for polygamy (even if they oppose it publicly) since they have polygamists in their ancestry, say most of them are already being supported by the state.

If people want to sleep around, have kids out of wedlock or whathaveyou, go wild. Just don't make society endorse it and support it.

So here's something. Utah is considering loosening up its polygamy laws.

-----------

Not certain how far they can go. State constitution, Article II:

The following ordinance shall be irrevocable without the consent of the United States and the people of this State:

First:--Perfect toleration of religious sentiment is
guaranteed. No inhabitant of this State shall ever be molested in person or property on account of
his or her mode of religious worship; but polygamous or plural marriages are forever prohibited.

Part of the deal that allowed Utah to become a state in the first place.

103 There's no particular reason for plural marriage to be illegal.

Unless you've been paying attention to Britain, where men emigrate from countries that allow four wives (and at least one is expected to be their first cousin...) and they end up with households of 12-15 on the dole, who get together periodically to wave "DEATH TO BRITAIN" signs, and the (inbred...) sons grow up to rape infidel women.

But eh. We shouldn't be judgmental, or something.

We will have a lot more of all three (and more) n the future. So the culture as a whole is well on the way to being "non-American". Enjoy. Diversity is good. Diversity makes us stronger.

Posted by: RioBravo at February 14, 2013 10:11 AM (eEfYn)

109 You all might as well get used to the idea now but: Polygamy will be legal in the next 10 years.

There is no other way around the gay marriage slide that does not end in legalizing polygamy.

Every single "argument" the gays and their supporters use are exactly the same arguments the polygamists will and are using.

Worse, polygamy has actual support in the Bible.

Of course, polygamy is not the gay marriage pusher's purpose, though it does serve their purpose: They're pushing their agenda as part of an attack on religion and society--all part of a childish revenge fantasy.

This.

Besides, as you also mentioned, Utah's endemic brand of polygamy often involves marrying off girls who are quite young. So does Islam. So do many cultures where polygamy is accepted. Now I know "slippery slope" arguments don't really carry much weight, but how long after we start supporting polygamy before pederasty is officially on the table for legalization? The movement's already started. I don't personally see any need to give them further opportunity.

Polygamy is actually worse for young men and society.
1) It's better for a woman to have 1/5 of a rich man than 100% of a poor man.
2) Few young men have the wealth to compete with older men for mates.
3) Lot's of young men who can't find a good wife = the modern Middle East (and China).
4) Young men who aren't married are ripe for radicalism, full of anger with no anchors.

No pre-ex with SCOAMTTcare? Ha!
My insurance man wouldn't shop my individual coverage because he says not to move it regardless. He just found out that come Jan 2014, any policy that hasn't been in force since (I believe) Oct 2010 will not be grandfathered and will be subject to pre-ex underwriting and premium rating.

In addition, he says only 12% of us in the individual market can expect to receive an annual rate. The rest will be rated month by month.

As a former underwriter I know how SCOAMTTcare is incalculable, and have always known the goal has nothing to do with affordability or patient protection.

There is no other way around the gay marriage slide that does not end in legalizing polygamy.

Every single "argument" the gays and their supporters use are exactly the same arguments the polygamists will and are using.

Worse, polygamy has actual support in the Bible.

Of
course, polygamy is not the gay marriage pusher's purpose, though it
does serve their purpose: They're pushing their agenda as part of an
attack on religion and society--all part of a childish revenge fantasy.

I mind when I get others killed.

The 4 player co-op is the easiest, most casual gamemode. It's not like an 8-player MP game where you have the 14 yo's spam the mic with all sorts of obnoxious crap if you do something wrong or your timing is off by 1 nanosecond.

Co-op is made for friends playing at their own pace. You don't have to be good or worry about others dying since they re-spawn at the next checkpoint. Plus, defibs!

160 Checking out JWF and just now remembering to comment here about the 2/12 story from the NYT demanding Menendez be removed from his leadership positions in the Senate.

Here's the JWF link, so you don't have to go to NYT: http://tiny.cc/pz4hsw

As JWF says:
Quite curious how the New York Times is taking the lamestream media lead in investigating the obscenely corrupt New Jersey Senator. Would be nice if the rest of the media paid attention.

I tentatively agree. And the reason I say "tentatively" is because I don't trust the NYT. If they're pushing Reid to do something about Menendez it's not because they want justice for the taxpayers who may have been defrauded or justice for the underage prostitutes he allegedly schtupped. It's because of something else. I don't know what that something is, but I can guarantee you it's not something positive for the country or the Senate.

The Enemy of this nation is the Media, which is dominated by Liberal Democrat Union members from New York and Los Angeles who censor any opinions with which they disagree, and coverup bad news regarding their political allies.

They drive the agenda, and by doing so they drive armies of idiot voters.

Every newspersons opinion is worth thousands if not millions of votes. Their influence constitutes a basic breakdown in the concept of democratic representation. They have far too much influence, and it is counterbalanced with almost nothing.

201 But if people want to participate in these relationships and screw up

Because people are not islands. (Or potatoes). Those screwed up little girls grow up to raise screwed up little boys. Screwed up little boys grow up to be screwed up men. Screwed up men can cause all kinds of damage to people who had no hand in their rearing, and no say in their family arrangement.

This is why I bring up the idea of "who defines marriage." Is marriage truly a human "invention" created out of whole-cloth because "morality?" Or is the religious/civil recognition of marriage simply an acknowledgement of a natural (or God-given, take your pick) reality?

If it's the first, we have no reason to oppose any sexual desire anyone has- including rape (because we "invented" our morals), pedophilia, bestiality and necrophilia. Forget mere homosexual marriage or polygamy.

If it's the second, then homosexual marriage and polygamy are not simply "choices" people might make, but have the real consequences of acting in a way contradictory to Nature (or Nature's God, take your pick).

A group of Republican veterans are forming a super PAC to fund a new effort to refocus the party's messaging and policy goals, in an attempt to broaden the GOP's appeal beyond its traditional demographic base.

"The goal is simple," said Alex Castellanos, who is spearheading the project, NewRepublican.org. "Help move the GOP move forward and renew our brand." The endeavor is being backed by the likes of former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, who is featured prominently on the web site.

"Our mission is to do for the Republican Party what the DLC did for the Democrats," Castellanos said.

It's Orwellian because there is only one kind of diversity that is ever meaningful - intellectual diversity.

I'm all diversity, but only in the kitchen. The world is full of good food.

In yet another example, the Orwellian meaning of the word directly counters common sense. What is being forced upon us is reverse discrimination, and the destruction of merit: instead of having the best and brightest, we are to have a superficial show of diversity for diversity's sake, regardless of ability or intellect.

We were already diverse, but the control freaks in DC are forcing a false, quasi-Marxist philosophy upon us with the unsaid goal of undermining American values of excellence.

239 Hybrid vigor helpful to the species?
In some ways, yes.
When you cross a white bass with a striped bass (striper) you get what is referred to as a wiper. Fish and game departments do this purposely as wipers are very aggressive, grow fast and are fun to catch. They can be hard on other, less aggressive types of fish populations, like bluegill, in the same waters.
Evolutionarily (is that a word?) helpful?
Wipers, like other hybrids, have a very distinctive characteristic found in hybrids that would say no. Can you guess what that is?

247 I think the NYT knows that Republicans - if they were smart BWAHAHAHAHA! - could actually do something with the Menendez story, because it is bad for Democrats. They want Reid to clear him off the table.

Republicans could do the following with Menendez:

- make him the face of Obama immigration reform, which would poison that
- make him the face of Democrat foreign policy. The insufferable Kerry, dumbass Hagel, and this horndog
- tar the Democrat brand with this. This is what they are, this is what they do. Corrupt whoremongers. The lot of them.
- indict the Obama administration in the coverup. Oh, people love them some free shit, and they think Obama is fighting for them, but, no, aside from funneling "green" money to billionaire donors and stimulus money to fatcat union heads, he is covering for corrupt whoremongers.
- throw a wrench in to Democrat politics in Jersey. It would be a GOOD thing for Christie to get Booker het up about getting Menendez's seat. Start some black on brown rivalries on racism. The long knives out. Then after the deed is done, drop some doc on Booker as a reason not to appoint him, then appoint a Republican. Even some RINO. Hell, Christine Todd Whitman is retired, and whatever else, she is better than Booker.
- and something about private jets.

The story is that powerful. I mean, come on, get some good pictures of hot Dominican hookers, get some to cry on TV, and people will listen. But will Republicans do any of it? Hell no. Look how fast they let Weiner and Tony the Tiger get swept under the rug.

This story is an embarrassment of riches, we should be pounding it like an underage Dominican hooker - oh, that's an unfortunate turn of phrase, huh?

255 To illustrate the difference between Haley and Sanford all one has to do is look into the ATV law that went into effect July 1, 2011. This new law requires children under 16 to attend a safety course, wear a helmet and safety goggles and be supervised by an adult while riding. That doesn't sound too bad although the safety course is a waste of time and money but the law is also applicable when riding on private property and it allows the police to go on to private property to enforce the law.

Sanford said it was unconstitutional and he vetoed it when they first passed it. As soon a Haley entered office they re-passed the law and she signed it.

257 Two days after his State of the Union pledge to guarantee high quality
preschool for every 4-year-old in the U.S., President Barack Obama takes
his pitch on the road on Thursday to an Atlanta suburb where he will
deliver a speech on the issue at a local recreation center.

"Every dollar we invest in high-quality early childhood education can
save more than seven dollars later on by boosting graduation rates,
reducing teen pregnancy, even reducing violent crime,"

According to a fact sheet released by the White House on Thursday
morning, Obama's preschool plan would create a new federal-state
cost-sharing partnership to guarantee high-quality preschool to all low-
and moderate-income 4-year-old children, including families that earn
up to 200 percent of the poverty level. The program would be extended to
middle-class families who may pay on a sliding scale, and would
incentivize full-day kindergarten.

One JAMA (Journal of American Medical Association) study indicates that something like 40% of adult male homosexuals were molested as children, thereby indicating a psychological component of their sexual orientation. One means by which a person can cope with something which their mind regards as unacceptable is by convincing themselves there is nothing wrong with it.

Prominent "transgender" Chas Bono was repeatedly molested by one of Cher's lesbian friends when Chassity had been left with her to be babysat for extended periods of time.

Behind homosexual behavior there is often psychological trauma.

271 There is probably a genetic component to homosexuality, so acting on homosexual impulses is simply following Nature's course.

There *might* be a genetic component to homosexuality (Human Genome project never found one, that I know of- tsrblke or other such researchy morons, check me on that).

That said, what is true in general may not be true in specific cases. Also, we see no evidence that homosexuality is common (at least not without explanation) in any other species. So if Nature is all that exists, it seems odd that we would be the only species which has any predilection (however rare) toward life-long monothropic homosexuality. IN GENERAL it is bad if people are homosexual because IN GENERAL that would mean no procreation. (That is: if the majority of the populace were homosexual, eventually there would be no populace).

Note- this is not the "marriage is for procreation!" argument. Though that one is more valid than many will accept.

So while it may be true that any specific homosexual couple is merely "following (their personal) Nature's course," it does not follow that a society which is acknowledging Nature's general prescription should acknowledge, let alone condone or promote, homosexual marriage.

If Nature is not all there is (that is: if there is a God), God has decreed homosexuality to be wrong, and against His Nature. Here, being born homosexual is like someone who is born with a genetic predisposition to alcoholism. Just because you're "born that way" doesn't mean God doesn't expect you to try your hardest to keep to His ways.

291 That said, what is true in general may not be true
in specific cases. Also, we see no evidence that homosexuality is common
(at least not without explanation) in any other species. So if Nature
is all that exists, it seems odd that we would be the only species which
has any predilection (however rare) toward life-long monothropic
homosexuality. IN GENERAL it is bad if people are homosexual because IN
GENERAL that would mean no procreation. (That is: if the majority of the
populace were homosexual, eventually there would be no populace).

There are two arguments against tolerance of homosexuality which you have left out either inadvertently or perhaps because you aren't familiar with them. The other arguments are

Disease. Homosexual behaviour is rife with disease. Prior to the development of anti-biotics, it was a virtual assurance of a disease ridden life, and probable early death.

Psychological issues. Homosexuals do not have normal moral boundaries. As a result they are overrepresented in terms of brutal murders, molestations, and sadistic behavior. In large groups they tend to be confrontational and domineering. The Nazis were heavily overrepresented by homosexuals in their SS and Camp guards. (See book "The Pink Swastika." )

He's doing really well, they've had him up and walking for a few days, so it's a good thing. They're saying two weeks in patient but if he keeps improving that may be shorter.

Finding a specific gene that is responsible for a complex behavior is problematic with today's technology and knowledge. As for the HGP, it simply mapped the genome; it did not connect the dots.

There is homosexuality in other animals.

The fact that homosexual behavior precludes procreation is unimportant. As I mentioned, it is a complex behavior, with a range that probably runs from pure homosexuality to 99% heterosexual with small homosexual tendencies. So the gene or genes responsible (ignoring nurture) will not disappear.

I think you are missing the powerful effect that the evolution of our society has had on our behavior. 100,000 years ago, if I wanted that nice fat rabbit you trapped, I would just take it. But we have evolved culturally and religiously -- that behavior is no longer considered appropriate. We have improved on Nature. With God's help, or on our own...depending on what you believe.

Dorner targeted Quan to get at her dad. He targeted Lawrence, likely also to get at her dad (since said dad approved of the engagement, and gave Lawrence advice on how to propose). There's not a racial angle here. Dorner is / was a hate-obsessed freak, but not a racist.

I do want to say, though, that Lawrence's death is a real loss. I feel like burning Dorner alive myself after reading about him + Quan.

309 There are two arguments against tolerance of homosexuality which you

I left them out because they didn't factor into the thread of the discussion. My original position is that homosexuality is "Unnatural" (clarified later to mean "In general" and not necessarily applicable to specific cases) or contrary to God's Will.

The rebuttal to my point was pointing out there is "probably" a genetic component to homosexuality.

My response (in which I left out those arguments) was a re-rebuttal. I was pointing out why any specific instance of a "genetic component of homosexuality" is not actually germane to what society decides to condone.

324 There is homosexuality in other animals.

Which I didn't deny. I denied that it exists without some explanation.

For instance, those famously "gay" penguins apparently had no problem getting it on with the ladies once they were broken up.

Further for instance, youthful monkeys often exhibit the behavior until a) they achieve enough dominance to mate with the ladies or b) leave the tribe, to find one where they might be dominant enough to mate with the ladies.

And it is important, again, because if it is GENERALLY natural (that is: common, or at least not uncommon) in our Nature, then marriage is "just made up." And if marriage is "just made up" then all the protections implicit in it have no foundation. As I said- if marriage is "just made up" there is no moral case against pedophilia.

As for your "steal the wabbit" argument: I don't see what it has to do with the nature of marriage. Also, I would suggest our Nature (either just Nature, or by God's hand) is such that our "evolution" to a state where theft (especially violent theft) is "not appropriate" was inevitable. Humans are naturally social creatures, but you can't be a social creature if there is no trust among members of the society (be it as small as a family group, or as large as a nation). The same does not follow for homosexuality.

327 If you just do a little research on the ole internet, you don't have to look long to find an example of where a Cabinet nominee had been blocked, and the Senate was forced to use a cloture vote to bring about final confirmation.

That was back on May 26 2006, when the Senate had to get 60 votes for a cloture motion to force a final vote on President George W. Bush's choice for Interior Secretary, Dirk Kempthorne.

And like Hagel, Kempthore was a former Senator.

"I know this nominee is a person deserving of our respect," said Sen. Bill Nelson (D-FL) just before the 2006 vote, "But I must stand on my principles to oppose this nomination."

While other Democrats like Sen. Mary Landrieu (D-LA) had placed a hold on Kempthorne's nomination, it was Nelson in 2006 who ultimately refused to allow action on the Kempthorne nomination, so the Senate was forced to vote on a cloture motion, which was approved on a vote of 85-8, well above the 60 votes needed to bring about final action.

Joining Nelson to vote for a filibuster of a Bush Cabinet nominee were, Sen. Joe Biden - now the Vice President, John Kerry - now Secretary of State, and both Senators from New York, Hillary Clinton and Charles Schumer.

No there isn't. There is conduct which is labeled "Homosexual" in animals, but it is not based on a desire to behave in the manner of human homosexuals.

Various animals exhibit dominance by mounting other males, but these animals do not prefer to mount males, they do it just to show they can. Dogs will mount legs and anything else of vaguely the right size or shape (Stuffed animals) but this is not a predisposition for legs and stuffed animals, it is just animal masturbation by proxy.

Of all the examples I have ever seen of animals described as engaging in homosexual behavior, none of them are actual examples of homosexual behavior.
(a preference to mate with other members of the same sex.)

It is just "gay" propaganda.

357 About Prisoner X, the Australian/Israeli Mossa agent who was arrested for treason and committed suicide in jail before his trial began, from YNet:

Earlier on Thursday Kuwait's Al-Jarida newspaper quoted Western sources a saying that Zygier was one of the members of the squad which assassinated senior Hamas terrorist Mahmoud al-Mabhouh in Dubai in January 2010.

The same sources noted that following the mission, Zygier contacted the government in Dubai and updated it on the details of the assassination in exchange for protection. The sources also said that Israel managed to uncover Zygier's hiding place, kidnapped him and jailed him for treason, and all this while maintaining absolute secrecy. The report has not been confirmed by any other sources.

The Brisbane Times said Israeli intelligence informed ASIO of Zygier's arrest and detention just eight days after authorities in Dubai had revealed that suspected Israeli agents had used fraudulent Australian passports in the assassination of Mabhouh.
