| Overnight Open Thread (2-12-2013)Tonight we journey to the surface of Mars.
More like nasty lying political operatives wearing reporter suits. Daniel Schorr at the 1964 GOP convention: "It looks as though Senator Goldwater, if nominated, will be starting his campaign here in Bavaria, center of Germany's right wing" also known, Schorr added helpfully, as "Hitler's one-time stomping ground." Goldwater, he went on, had given an interview to Der Spiegel, "appealing to right-wing elements in Germany," and had agreed to speak to a conclave of, yes, "right-wing Germans." "Thus," Schorr concluded, "there are signs that the American and German right wings are joining up." Now back to you, Walter, and have a nice day! Pretty much anything Dan Rather ever said. And here's Bob Schieffer last month: And that's what Barack Obama is going to have to do.what happened in Newtown was probably the worst day in this country's history since 9/11. We found Osama bin Laden. We tracked him down. We changed the way that we dealt with that problem. Surely, finding Osama bin Laden; surely passing civil rights legislation, as Lyndon Johnson was able to do; and before that, surely, defeating the Nazis, was a much more formidable task than taking on the gun lobby. Here's a line you'll either recognize or you won't: "This is one time where television really fails to capture the true excitement of a large squirrel predicting the weather." If you don't recognize this little gem, you've either never seen Groundhog Day or you're not a fan of what is, in my opinion, one of the best films of the last 40 years. As the day of the groundhog again approaches, it seems only fitting to celebrate what will almost undoubtedly join It's a Wonderful Life in the pantheon of America's most uplifting, morally serious, enjoyable, and timeless movies. From Jonah Goldberg's classic essay on Groundhog Day. The 48 Laws of Machiavellian Power In one's life, you're better off following the teachings of Moses, Jesus, or Buddha to gain long-term happiness. But the sad fact is, many people live by a very different set of rules, and while most of these folks eventually self-destruct, they can inflict severe damage on our personal and professional lives in the process. Law 13 These rules may be amoral but even a moral person might want to have them in their quiver just in case. One of the clearest explications of the legal basis for Israel and the history of the region I've ever seen. If Israel is somehow 'illegal' then so is every other country in the area since they were also based on similar mandates. One of the best explanations of the legal and political background is presented in this video by Northwestern Law Professor Eugene Kontorovich. He puts the lie to the currently fashionable notion that the "1967 borders" have any legal or historical signficance, and demonstrates that Israel does not "illegally occupy" the West Bank. In fact, it was Jordan which illegally occupied the West Bank prior to 1967. OMG: Robots Are Taking Our Jobs!! The latest progressive fear - ATMs and robots are stealing jobs! In other words, the Left is only able to conflate obsolete jobs and permanent unemployment because it's looking at a particular moment in time, one in which the remnants of our once-thriving private sector are still introducing labor-saving devices, even as the Progressive government's heavy hand is simultaneously suppressing that start-ups that would have piggy-backed on this new technology and provided different (and often better) employment opportunities. Here are the kind of jobs being taken by the robots: Well actually robots have advanced quite a bit but they're still really only good at repetitive tasks requiring little inspection or judgment. So if a robot can replace you, then that doesn't speak very well of the value you were bringing to the job in the first place. From 1906. I've never heard of this knot before but it sounds more useful than the usual ones that are taught. You can see an animated version here. For some reason this amazingly useful knot has been forgotten. Like many knots, it is stronger than a square knot, but it is unique in that it can always be untied easily, even after it has been loaded heavily. In other words, it will not "jam". It is also easy to tie and easy to verify. Sadly strippers in movies mostly just dance. Teh Tweet! Tonight's post brought to you by 1979: Notice: Posted by permission of AceCorp LLC. There's also the point that the Jews need a homeland, for various historical reasons, which we can all be reminded of when we visit DU and Zerohedge; and the Arabs already got one (western Arabia). I need some help from the collective moron memory. Sometime in the last year or so, one of the morons mentioned that he had a daughter that stopped growing in one leg or something of that nature during her teenage years. I don't recall the exactissue but it was something very odd, and the root problem turned out to be something very counterintuitive. Does this sound familiar to anyone? The young lady in question is now in college, IIRC.
I ask because there is a ~11 year old girl in my church who has rather abruptly stopped growing this last year (less than 3/4" when she should be averaging around 4"). She is apparently not producing the growth hormone she should be producingat all. She is going to be getting injections of synthetic hormone as compensation, but I was wondering if anyone remembered the other story soI could pass it along to her parents if it sounded like it might be a similar situation. If she actually wants you to do something about a problem, she'll let you know. 85% of the time or more, when a woman tells you about her problems she doesn't really want your help -- you are just supposed to acknowledge her frustration. Most times, a simple "I'm sorry that happened to you," / "I wish you felt better" / "That was unfair and you didn't deserve it" / etc. will do nicely. If he's in that cabin, I don't understand why he went to the mountains.
He's not stupid but it seems that way. Mountains: limited ways in and out. That area has a noticeably paler population than say Baldwin Hills or Watts. Rough terrain on foot. Lots of LE with Helos due to skiiing, tourism etc. Why go to the mountains? I think it IS a beg setup but someone's flinging bullets at the cops so it's probably him. Maybe the truck packed it in as he was crossing and he had to improvise. The main ways criminals get caught: equipment failure or getting snitched on (gf's mostly). Joffen, I don't know you from Adam. Here, we are all pretty much the people that type goofy things that live inside your computer. My cousin committed suicide when he was 17. My brother in law committed suicide when he was 29, and left my sister and two little girls, due to his depression. You're in a dark place, and most people have been there at least once. Sometimes is seems like that's all there is.... darkness. It probably seems like everything you hoped for has come undone. Without trying to sound corny, your life is a sacred thing, like every man and woman's life is. Don't give up and do something so irreversibly tragic that you might contemplate. Regardless of what you might think and feel at this moment, there are surely people who care about you very much, and would be heartbroken if something happened to you. I know. I've seen a great many people I care about leave this life, and the hurt really never goes away, but sometimes the hurt reminds you that you are alive. Be strong. Re-affirm that you are stronger than this and will prevail. Not just survive. Prevail. Posted by: Reader C.J. Burch writes.... at February 12, 2013 10:42 PM (Md8Uo) 288

How about sending me rye?
I don't know if I can do that any more. There's some new (terrorism-inspired?) international postal rule about not being allowed to send alcohol at a certain proof, even as perfume, through the mail. I used to send my Aussie buddy the small 2-oz bottles of rye for Christmas mixed in with Christmas candies and a stuffed toy for his daughter but would describe them as "perfume" on the customs packing slip so the package wouldn't get stolen by Canadian or Aussie postal workers. So I go to mail the package to him one Christmas and discover that booze and perfume are on the no-fly list! I don't know if it affects private air courier companies or just postal services. Two of the strongest motivators on the plant.
Greed. Fear. ___ Upon this a question arises: whether it be better to be loved than feared or feared than loved? It may be answered that one should wish to be both, but, because it is difficult to unite them in one person, is much safer to be feared than loved, when, of the two, either must be dispensed with. Because this is to be asserted in general of men, that they are ungrateful, fickle, false, cowardly, covetous, and as long as you succeed they are yours entirely; they will offer you their blood, property, life and children, as is said above, when the need is far distant; but when it approaches they turn against you Posted by: Machiavelli at February 12, 2013 10:47 PM (AUeaU) 321

I've always like the next paragraph as well of Machiavelli;
But when it is necessary for him to proceed against the life of someone, he must do it on proper justification and for manifest cause, but above all things he must keep his hands off the property of others, because men more quickly forget the death of their father than the loss of their patrimony. Besides, pretexts for taking away the property are never wanting; for he who has once begun to live by robbery will always find pretexts for seizing what belongs to others; but reasons for taking life, on the contrary, are more difficult to find and sooner lapse. But when a prince is with his army, and has under control a multitude of soldiers, then it is quite necessary for him to disregard the reputation of cruelty, for without it he would never hold his army united or disposed to its duties. We need to face that people don't care about the details... they pay attention to the speaker himself.. Obama was a lying SCoaMF, but he came accross sure of himself, and made people watching feel sure of him as well. Rubio blew that. He was clearly nervous. He touched his temples multiple times. Don't kid yourselves, guys. Rubio's not ready for prime time. He should never have been given this task. He did not do well. He was unsteady, rambling, and his nervousness showed. Not good. He played beta or gamma to Obama tonight. Wow, not good. Rubio's revealed as very probably too young to become a standard bearer. Promising dude, but simply not ready. Nobody would confuse him for a Reagan, that's for sure!

wasn't Bavaria one of the weaker regions for Nazi support? In fairness, no. It was a stronghold of the Nazis from the get-go. It had been a Red stronghold before that (e.g. right after WWI, with the establishment of a Bavarian Soviet that was crushed by the central government), but the Nazis largely co-opted the socialist message (read their manifesto of the time), and added nationalism, which closed the deal. AD, what do I despise about Obama? An easier question would be what's to like about him. I can't think of anything to recommend the man. He's a progressive statist engaged on implementing his utopian dream and dragging all of us down with it. He runs roughshod over the US Constitution, despite being a constitutional lawyer. And that's not very ironic and it's not a coincidence, either. He's a Gramscian Marxist hell bent on destroying the America he hates (being America as it is), in lieu of fashioning an America Moochelle can be proud of. And that's no America I, for one, want to be part of.

Bebe's boobs-
Before my Mama passed away in Dec. 2001, she had asked me to be her Executor. As I no longer lived on the East coast, I asked her to name by baby brother. When I went back to help him, we went to BN to get a 'Dummy's Guide To Probate' (yeah, they make one). At checkout, he casually picked a yellow highlighter out of a jar, uncapped it, and took a sniff. I have done the same sort of thing (going back to mimeograph days). He looked at me and said 'smell this, it smells like a banana'. Sure enough, it did smell like a banana. So he tried the other colors and got strawberry for red, etc. He asked me what they did that for. 'I looked straight at the little girl running the cash register and said 'that's so blind people can highlight stuff when they are reading'. She nodded yes and said 'isn't that a great idea!'. True story. She was blonde. Posted by: EROWMER at February 12, 2013 11:14 PM (kxlCQ) Posted by: Hollowpoint at February 12, 2013 11:15 PM (X9Mnx) 449

Kerry wanted Rubio to stop talking so he could take over and Rubio smacked that fool down. It was great. Why does our side agree to such harsh, hot lights? i dunno that i'd go that far with Paul, but he does seem to hold too fast to the blowback theory of foreign policy, where any form of intervention _must_ have negative effects
Rand can't be trusted. He's a six pack away from ranting about gold and imperialism. He's fine as a junior Senator, but shouldn't be allowed more influence than that. He's trying to split the needle between mainstream conservativism and the Paultard loons. He's not as nutty as his old man, but that's not saying much. Posted by: RWC at February 13, 2013 12:00 AM (sqp6o) There was some video of little squids (less than a foot long, IIRC) that were doing the "leap out of the water and skip along the surface to avoid predators" thing. 'Cause it's a bit more difficult for creatures to do that when they're big enough to have squid-sized mouths -- the cube/square law* and all that. *and just in case -- the cube/square reference is when you increase the size of something, its mass goes up by the cube, but the strength goes up by the square. In other words, if you had a golden retriever puppy that was twice as tall as the usual, it'd be four times stronger, but eight times heavier -- so you'd expect it to do a lot of drooping around. Works for inanimate objects like I-beams, too. Posted by: cthulhu at February 13, 2013 12:13 AM (kaalw) 576

In other words, we play the game as though we're
dealing with people who can see through bullshit and contradictions, whereas the Dems play for the people who can't. There's a lot more of those in this country than not, so while we may be logically more correct and consistent, the Dems end up winning the "conventional wisdom". THE PSYCHOLOGY OF WOMEN & DRINKING
Seven New York City bartenders were asked if they could nail a woman's personality based on what she drinks. Though interviewed separately, they concurred on almost all counts. The results: Drink: Beer Personality: Casual, low-maintenance, and down-to-earth Your Approach: Challenge her to a game of pool Drink: Blender Drinks Personality: Flaky and annoying pain in the ass Your Approach: Avoid her, unless you want to be her cabin boy Drink: Mixed Drinks Personality: Older with picky taste and knows what she wants Your Approach: You won't have to approach her ... she'll send YOU a drink Drink: Wine (does not include White Zinfandel ... see below) Personality: Conservative, classy, and sophisticated Your Approach: Tell her you wish Reagan had had four more years ... Alzheimer's and term limits be damned Drink: White Zinfandel Personality: Easy; thinks she is classy and sophisticated but actually has no clue Your approach: Make her feel smarter than she is... Drink: Shots Personality: Hanging with frat-boy pals or looking to get drunk ... and naked Your Approach: Easiest hit in the joint ... nothing to do but wait Posted by: Thunderb at February 13, 2013 12:19 AM (Dnbau) 593

Awash in liberal talking points, it's clear this dunderhead is now so high on, among other things, his own arrogance that even my 77 year old Dem-leaning father commented on it tonight. Here is Cruz's press release in response.
WASHINGTON, DC—U.S. Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) released the following statement responding to the President’s State of the Union address: The President had an opportunity to reach across the aisle and propose policies to produce economic growth. Unfortunately, he chose instead to embrace unabashed liberalism. President Obama only knows how to grow government, not the economy. Under President Obama, the economy is entering its fifth year of substandard annual growth – 0.8% on average -- compared to an average of 3.3% for the last 70 years. If the President's big-government policies were enacted, they would make it harder for the 23 million people out of work to find a job, harder for young people coming out of school to find their first job, and harder for Hispanics and African Americans struggling to achieve the American dream. There is potential for real bipartisan cooperation in Congress to get the economy growing and help people get back to work, but expanding government spending, debt, taxes, and control of the economy will only make the problem worse. Didn't watch the preznit cuz I gave up TV, and well, I hate the taste of puke.
Didn't watch Rubio, cuz, well, I guess after watching the people on this thread argue over how to drink water I just can't manage to give a shit. Did watch Rand Paul cuz a link was posted upthread and thought, what the hell, I'll take a look. The following is intended as a constructive suggestion only --- Rand Paul gave a speech that on its merits was about like quietly whispering "fire" in a burning building. Mr. Paul, you have a very important message and you should make it sound like one. When the building I am in is burning, I want you to yell "FIRE" as loud as you can. There were a number of mistakes that pubbies always make -- stats and dollar amounts, followed by stats and dollar amounts. That will never work. Anecdotes work. Things have to be personalized. Everyone can project themselves into any person with whom they feel comparable. Very few people can project themselves into a statistic. Mr. Paul, study Hans Bleiker. Drag all of your compatriots with you. Apply the Bleiker Life Preserver -- and drop the damn stats and tell stories about people -- real, everyday people. Posted by: jc at February 13, 2013 03:05 AM (PlzOe) 757
An example of how pubbies should be talking in the age of Oblameus -
"Mrs. (insert name of real person) is recently widowed. She lives in (insert her town). Under this President, she is being bled out." Then go on to explain how inflation coupled with near zero interest rates is cancelling all the work that her and her husband did for 50 years. Explain how unfair it is and don't sugarcoat the language for anybody. Explain why Obuttsux is just a mean asshole and for pete's sake Make it Real for a Real Person. Right after you are done explaining how horrible this asshole has been to a member of the elderly in a manner that all the other elders can compare themselves to (the power of an anecdote about a real person rather than dry statistical facts figgers), then move down 10 years and do it again -- "Mr. and Mrs. (insert real couple here) live in (insert their real town). They are coping with unbearable stress. Not only are their parents being shoved down a rathole by the President's disastrous economic policies that are depleting their savings while offering zero protection against real inflation -- they are also supporting 2 adult children who cannot get a start in life because there are no jobs." Then go on to explain a couple of real points. Move down in age again and with the example of a real person explain how a student is getting screwed by the system --- etc., etc. These politicians need to reach out and get some real stories about real people that are getting the shaft. They need to boil those real stories into concise, well-explained forms and use them like a cluster bomb on preznit asshole and his crowd. No stats, except as a portion of the explanation. No figgers. No whining about the abstract -- talk about people and always, always, always do so with extreme prejudice. Posted by: jc at February 13, 2013 03:24 AM (PlzOe) 758
by "extreme prejudice" I mean talk about the Preznit and his merry band of misfits like you think they are all heartless assholes and with the full expectation that every reasonable person who is not a heartless asshole would agree. In other words, sound like Tip O'Neil talking about Reagan -- at all times, in all ways.
It should always be the verbal equivalent of an attempt to be rid of an infestation of bedbugs and always packaged with an air of righteous contempt that a parasite deserves. Posted by: jc at February 13, 2013 03:31 AM (PlzOe) 759

inflation?

So, how many ways are real Americans getting screwed:
- this president has changed our society from one where it rained sometimes but the sun shines a lot -- to a society where it is always dank, drab, and drizzles -- welcome to the new world where the only color is Soviet concrete grey -- and that is all you will ever see again until these assholes are gone. - you will be born into debt slavery from the very first minute of your life. Anything you make will be destroyed by their inflation. - you will be deprived of a chance to get an education without enormous, unmanageable debt. The days when you could work your way through college are gone and will be ruthlessly trampled out if they start to appear again. - you will be trapped by the welfare cliff into being a slave for someone who quit and is now riding on your back, or you must accept your fate and live in the handcuffs of a somewhat comfortable, but totally unfulfilled life. - you will be kept from supporting yourself by horrible, heartless, and clinically stupid regulations administered by people who have been turned into zombies by the lack of humanity in their respective bureaucracies. - you will be deprived of a chance to endure a single day without massively stupid bureaucracy adding a ridiculous level of stress to your life. You will come to understand the madness of completely meaningless frustration --- we are all Yossarian now. - you will be fought at every turn if you attempt to raise your children to believe solid values or even to receive an education that isn't truly pathetic. If you fight for these things, your children will be punished as a means to make you stop. - you will lose your insurance and your doctor. You will get health care from the medical equivalent of the DMV. You will be judged by a death panel. If you survive, you will meet another one soon enough. These are some of the messages that must be delivered (I am sure the horde can add more, and better ones) -- and it can only be done by telling real stories about real people -- and .... Posted by: jc at February 13, 2013 03:52 AM (PlzOe) 763
and ....
those real people that are chosen to be the anecdotes that carry the messages for us all will go through hell. Every single one of them will get at least the "Joe the Plumber" treatment. Each person who volunteers to be an example of the downstream effects of shitfest that is this regime must understand in advance what will happen to them, and each one must be vetted because the dumpster-diving media whores will go after them with claws, fangs, and disease. There is nothing these walking colostomy bags will not stoop to, so each volunteer needs to be prepared and ready for the challenge. Posted by: jc at February 13, 2013 03:58 AM (PlzOe) 764
Hey Richard.
I thought I was alone, so I am taking an opportunity to get some things off my chest. I get so frustrated with the arguments like those upthread, where it seems to me, that the members of the horde feel so hopeless about the lack of leadership. I don't think our problem is especially tied to leaders, or the lack of leaders. I think our problem is our side has no idea how to reach people that don't already agree with them. Yeah, but why?
Not a single recreational drug without (often deadly) serious drawbacks. No ability to cure all STDs- ever. No good tasting food that won't make you fat and/or give you the shits if over eaten. No type of booze that doesn't give a hangover. Something tells me that Man will never overcome these obstacles even though there's no physical law to prevent the possibility. Posted by: Hollowpoint at February 13, 2013 01:35 AM (X9Mnx) Because Man has a puritanical streak. Try starting a company to develop a safe and effective recreational drug. It occurs to me that I am posting a list of grievances. It also occurs to me that many of the people on my side are so sick of assholes and their list of grievances --
So, why should I consider myself different from Sandra Fluke? Well, grievances I have. So, at that level, maybe I have something in common with that stupid entitled bitch. On the other hand, the entire Declaration of Independence is a statement of principles followed by a long list of grievances. So, am I in the whining American group, or the principled group with grievances? I am probably too close to the situation to really know for sure. The sole intent will be to use legal means to steal your property. There will be a method to charge you with a phonebook thick list of crimes so that you will be forced to accept that you cannot win, no matter how innocent you are.
