11 The country will be much better off when Vietnam war veterans are no longer serving in any office. That war and its aftermath just screwed them up. We should do the honorable thing and let them live the rest of their lives in peace away from any governmental service of any kind.

12 "Sen Hagel is an honorable man."

McCain's schizophrenia about honor is his worst instinct. Honor toward those who have been dishonorable, dishonor toward those who have been honorable.

Posted by: Matt at February 12, 2013 04:31 PM (N3qr3)

13 McCain really likes the word "honorable," doesn't he? He needs a new adjective.

24 My friends, we don't need to fear my good friend Senator Hagel. Sure he is off his rocker, doesn't really have a clue about anything, and is not fit to serve as Secretary of Defense, but he is an honorable man whom we should not impugn. Of course he called our country the world's bully, one of our strongest allies an enemy that commits nothing but war crimes, and otherwise is in no position to lead our armed forces at this perilous time. But my friends, he is an honorable man, and he deserves our respect and an up or down vote. Sure he's nuts and would probably be a disaster as Secretary of Defense. But my friends, my good friend Senator Hagel is an honorable man who served his country honorably over 40 years ago, and he deserves our respect. I for one will not allow this committe to impugn the integrity of this honorable man who told blatant falsehoods for years, impugned our party, and has yet to deliver everything we asked. Because my friends, my good friend Senator Hagel is an honorable man.

36 @32 In fairness, McCain was a little smarter before the repeated blows to the head, some of which were self-inflicted.
I am not making light of the torture he suffered at the hands of the VN Commies, but did they screw him up so bad that he thinks Commies are OK, should be made-nice-to, should be elevated because that would reflect on our honor?
Really?

Posted by: Thorvald at February 12, 2013 04:58 PM (1V6Pv)

37 i mean if you think a nominee's unacceptable who cares about being "unprecedented."

not a perfect analogy but if the Dems had "unprecedented"-ly stonewalled Roberts Alito there'd be a bunch of "well they HAD to you see" thinkpieces. McCain's not gonna earn brownie points for being Mr. Statesman.

39 The team Obama is putting together now (Brennan, Hagel, Kerry, etc.) is specifically designed to push a change in stance to one of containment on Iran. Hagel even let it slip during his hearing. Trust me on this...this is where this is going.

44 Just sent this to Patty Murray and Maria Cantwell:

"Please vote to confirm Chuck Hagel for Secretary of Defense. I know he is the best Obama could come up with, and he is the only non-Democrat in the world who so closely reflects Obama's own views on Israel and Iran. Plus, he probably can't beat Obama on the golf course. I really want to see Democrats stick this piece of dog doo-doo to Obama's shoe, so please please don't cop out! Vote for Chuckles."

Won't you be my friend? Anyone?
