btw, I loved how Rubio surrounded himself with 'victims' last night, i.e., victims of Obama's failed policies. That woman Jill who lost her job because of Obamacare. And that guy Jack who lost his job during Obama's recovery and can't afford to put gas in his car to look for a job. And that nice couple from Wherever, USA who are burdened with tax debt wracked up Obama's cockamamie "green" spending programs such as Solyndra and now-Chinese-owned A-123 Battery. oh wait, none of that never happened because the GOP would never ever think of doing it Posted by: soothsayer at February 13, 2013 05:48 PM (b8TXQ) 14

The dems believe that if you didn't have food stamps you'd have bread lines. That's what they say out loud. But they whisper that you need food stamps or the crime rate would soar and the people would riot. They whisper praise on the administration for paying off those inclined to riot with food stamps. When I initially heard this I was shocked and horrified but if a dem says it, it's not racist, right? It's only racist if a republcian says it.

My friend tells me the story of when he just started as a State Farm agent he was making about $150 week net after expenses and struggling with a wife and new baby and working 80 hrs a week. He was at the grocery check out with a lady with a cart full of sirloins and ribeyes , etc and he was there with the usual pack of hotdogs and bread. He said he told himself he would be just like that lady one day and able to fill up a cart with all the excess granted by success and then he saw her pull out the food stamps. Deflated him big time. And made him angrier when he saw her in the parking lot getting into a fairly new car. This was in the 80's.

There is a problem when our societal memes do not match our society (go look up the technical sociology terms yer own darn self).
In other words, we keep verbalizing and telling ourselves that America is the greatest!!!!111one! Then we, and our gov't, do the crap that we've been doing for the past 50 years. And you wonder why there's a disconnect? Why so many people could associate 'high levels of food stamps' with 'America is great'? Happy hour! I swear I was just remembering those days. Being a waitress myself, I always tipped. Stole some tp from a public restroom the other day just for old time's sake. Don't wanna lose my touch. Posted by: Justamom of the LiB camp at February 13, 2013 06:09 PM (Sptt8) 105
29 I'm kind of wondering when the government will start sponsoring sports. Not just any sports, mind you, but real sports. You know, like the kind they used to have in the Colosseum.
They'll call it The Hunger Games. Posted by: puddleglum at February 13, 2013 06:10 PM (pAUVV) 106
We can't have people being helped by their families or private charities. Then the people receiving help might feel inspired to become self-reliant. We can't even have a decent economy whereby we could work for a decent wage. The Dims have gradually destroyed that so they could step in and provide food stamps. It's what they do. And the FSA just keeps on voting for them. I agree with Annie Coulter: if we had a press that told the truth, would there be any Dims in office? Ted Cruz's dad was a US immigrant from Cuba, his mom is American, BUT he was born in Calgary. He's still a US citizen, right? OR does being born in Canada negate him from ever running for the big job? Posted by: LizLem at February 13, 2013 06:12 PM (8wqqE) 110

IIRC, Backwards, you are in North Florida. I , too, went thru an extended term of unemployment (3.5 yrs) there. I think EBTs are issued based on household income. My wife was/is disabled so our income was zero. We gotbenefits until I landed a minimum wage part time job. I was never so glad to get a tiny paycheck in my life, just to get out from under that stigma.
Doing much better now: got a great job going in the door and just this past Friday got 66% jump in salary (Now making what I did 3.5 years ago). Hang in there, pal. Posted by: Pecan Scandi at February 13, 2013 06:13 PM (NQdDJ) 112

With all the new grocery chains popping up, would one that didn't accept EBT be a hit, and like FoxNews dominate its segment. I'm sure it would have to be a "club" store to,get around some bs law or regulation. Non-union of course.

Food stamps weren't nearly the problem when they were actual stamps that invoked some shame in usage.
The ease of transferring the old stamp-stamps--trading them for cash/whatever--sent less (and fewer) distorting market signals (more exchange = more information), and priced in some of the "shame." The more below face value they were going for, the more would be bought and passed. The "shame equilibrium" was about 50%, from what I saw. The least economically damaging thing the government could do for The Poor is hand them stacks of our stolen money to spend on whatever they want. But getting people stuck in The System is more important to "us." As was "shame"--which the (black-ish) market could deal with. But the market can't respond sanely to tens of millions of people stuck--really stuck--buying way more (or more expensive) food than they want (in aggregate). So, have some inflation. Less filling! I take it you're of European descent. I don't think I could be any whiter. How is that possible?! B'Gal's SS. They calculate it by household down here. As you might have guessed, we've downsized like a mofo these past few years. There's nothing left for us to cut: we don't eat out, I've postponed dental work for years, my 22-yo truck isn't running because I can't afford the part to fix it. SMOD would be welcome right about now. Posted by: BackwardsBoy, who did not vote for this shit. at February 13, 2013 06:18 PM (+z4pE) 118

Posted by: pep at February 13, 2013 05:53 PM (6TB1Z) Soon, I'm guessing. Civilizational decline seems to follow a pattern with maybe a few cultural variations here and there but almost boring in its dismal sameness. But hey, that doesn't mean we should give in or give up. Let me give you a brief history of food stamps/commodities (from what I know.)
Way back, people got commodities. They got a big box with powdered milk, grains, beans, canned meat, cheese, butter and other items. They also could get recipe books on how to plan menus and cook up the stuff. (I believe "native Americans" still get commodites.) People would trade off the stuff they didn't like, but they had real food and wouldn't starve if they could cook. Then they started food stamps, which were in a booklet. Depending upon the time frame, you would get change or vouchers for your change, if you did not spend the full dollar amount. They were good only for groceries, not prepared food and could not be used for things like laundry soap. The grocery stores saw all of this as a good deal and wanted to increase what could be purchased. So they started allowing purchases of things like already made sandwiches from convenience stores. I once saw someone fill up a cart with those, real waste because they could have bought the makings a lot cheaper. Once you could buy prepared food, they increased the types of stores you could buy from. And, also they decided it was just too humiliating to deal with those little pieces of paper, so they went to the EBT cards. The amount of fraud on those is amazing. When they figure out what your income is, they will add up the bills you have and assume you are able to pay them. That is your "income". I haven't dealt with food stamps in a decade or two, so they may have gone with percentages that they use for rent, etc. There have been periods where single and childless couples can't get food stamps, but obviously, this is not one of those times. From what I can tell about a friend, recently in jail, they continue to dump funds onto the EBT for several months, before they expect you to let them know that you are still alive. He had several hundred dollars waiting on his card when he got out of jail. Back in the 60s, I had friends with kids on food stamps. Holidays like Thanksgiving and Christmas were really hard, because they fall at the end of the month. They had to be really frugal to have a nice holiday dinner. Same women were able to make their own bread and really budget to buy what they needed. Of course, those were also the women that got off welfare just as soon as the kids were old enough for school. Now, it's like a career and you never want to leave. Posted by: notsothoreau at February 13, 2013 09:49 PM (5HBd1) Processing 0.03, elapsed 0.0227 seconds. |
