| Top Headline Comments 2-12-13Happy Tuesday. Virginina ABC stores (the state liquor monopoly) are cutting workers' hours because of Obamacare. DC Comics, ever determined to demonstrate its relevance, has launched two new series exploring the themes of Occupy Wall Street, which, you may recall was a short-lived wannabe post-anarchistic protest movement that fizzled last year after dozens of participants were the victims of sexual and other assaults while other participants plotted domestic terrorism. Bravo, DC Comics. Awww, Politico notices that Obama's election-year promises are worth shit. I don't know if this has been mentioned here or not, but it seems like something that could bear mentioning twice: Makers Mark is responding to increased demand by watering its booze. North Korea conducted its third nuclear test yesterday. FLASHBACK: "North Korea Says It Will Abandon Nuclear Efforts" Obama to use State of the Union to make the case against spending cuts and for tax hikes. Surprise.Comments1
Good Morning Morons. Today is Tuesday, February 12, 2013. On this day in 1999 in the infamous Scottish Law ruling the Senate voted to acquit Bill Clinton in his impeachment trial even though he was guilty as sin.

Hello, 'rons and 'ronettes. Thanks for the morning briefing, Gabe and Vic.
In the early days of silent pictures, there was really no such thing as a consistent stunt double. You might have a member of the crew dress up as the leading lady in order to show her jumping on to a moving train, or perhaps a real cowboy would be filmed in long shot breaking a horse, while the star waited until all was safe before moving in for his close-up. But in general, if a stunt or pratfall was seen, it was the real actor doing it. The actress Pauline Curley, for example, was shooting a movie along Oregon's Columbia River when the cable connecting her boat to shore snapped. She was thrown into the churning waters and only barely made it to an outcropping of rocks, tearing her fingernails to bloody shreds as she hung on desperately wating for help. In the climactic rescue scene of 1920's Way Down East, Lillian Gish’s hand was submerged in freezing water for so long that she lost almost all feeling in it for the rest of her life. Grace Darmond - the bisexual actress best known to cinéasts as the lover of Rudolph Valentino's first wife, Jean Acker - was once thrown forty feet into the air by an angry elephant. Edwina Booth, while on location in Africa for the MGM film Trader Horn, not only suffered from malaria, sunstroke and dysentery, she nearly shattered her skull in a fall.* And leading man Wallace Reid was so banged up during the shooting of Valley of the Giants that he became hooked on morphine to ease the pain, an addiction that led to his death in 1923. Which brings me to the tragic tale of Martha Mansfield, a lovely ex-Ziegfeld Girl who seemed to be just on the cusp of stardom in November of 1923. She had first come to the attention of fans after being cast opposite John Barrymore in 1920's Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, and since then, her youth and limpid grey-eyed beauty made the 5' 4" actress a perfect fit for "vamp" roles in such films as Women In Love, Gilded Lies and Youthful Cheaters. Part of her latest film, the old stage success The Warrens of Virginia, was being filmed in Texas. On November 28, the Fox Film Corporation crew had filmed some battle scenes. For the next day - Thanksgiving Day - the schedule called for some close-up shots of Mansfield and her leading man, Wilfred Lytell. The company was staying at the Saint Anthony Hotel in San Antonio. Martha was in high spirits on Thanksgiving morning, having bought herself a new radio. She promised to throw a "radio party" for them all when they got back that night. "Last night I heard Chicago and Cincinnati. I'm sure I'll be able to get Philadelphia and New York tonight!" After breakfast, the group rode out to Brackenridge Park, where some shacks had been set up as slave quarters for the film's plantation setting. Martha positioned herself for a few exterior scenes. When those were done, director Elmer Clifton called a half hour break so that interior sets could be put together. As she wouldn't be needed for a while, Martha walked back to wait in her nearby limousine. Afterwards, a few people said they thought they saw a little flash of light at the window of Mansfield's car. Whether she had lighted a cigarette to calm her nerves or someone nearby had heard the age-old call of "smoke 'em if you got 'em," no one will ever know**. But everyone saw what happened next. There was a high, tortured scream from the inside of the car, and Mansfield burst out of it, her huge Civil War hoopskirt engulfed in fire. Her leading man, Lytell, reached her first, throwing a coat over her and pinning her to the ground as he and nearby crew slapped out the flames. For a little while, all seemed to be well. Martha wasn't in much pain on the way to the hospital, worrying only that the fire might have scarred her face. At the hospital, her wounds were proclaimed serious, but not life-threatening. But during the night, her conditioned worsened and she sank deeper and deeper into unconsciousness. Finally, just before noon on the 30th, she died - of "burns of all extremities, general toxemia and suppression of urine," according to her death certificate. She was only 24. Barrymore and Gloria Swanson were among the mourners at her funeral and Sam Goldwyn and David Selznick were asked to be pallbearers. Her part in The Warrens was edited down to nearly nothing. http://tinyurl.com/bo674x7 And that's it. I hope you all have a wonderful day. BTW, don't forget about my book, The Director's Cut: A Theda Bara Mystery, now on Kindle and available from the Barnes and Noble and Amazon websites. Like it? Please leave a review. Hate it? Tell me - how else will I learn? *she sued MGM for over a million dollars; the case was settled for $35,000, but the action effectively ended Booth's career, as no other major studio would hire her. **Mansfield rarely smoked, according to her mother, and - quite naturally, one thinks - no one ever came forward to admit smoking near or with the actress that day. - "Virginia ABC stores (the state liquor monopoly) are cutting workers' hours because of Obamacare."
Definitely. Hours will be cut. Employees will be laid off. Employer premium cost percentages will be cut. Now flash forward about a decade. And let's just assume for the sake of argument that a sufficient number of conservative poseurs stay home or go third-party in '16, and also that minority and college kid turnouts sufficiently are robust, that Hillary or Cuomo get elected and then in '20 reelected. And that Dems somewhere in the interim retake the House. You can bet your bottom dollar in those events that we're looking at single payer and the complete destruction of the U.S. economy. The narrative will be that only single payer can work to solve the ongoing "health insurance crisis" and the "proof" will be all of the people post-Obamacare without coverage and struggling to make ends meet. The Dems would make Machiavelli blush. - "Obama to use State of the Union to make the case against spending cuts and for tax hikes." Of course. The other narratives and memes on Wednesday will be gun control, gay rights, student loans and immigration. Journolist already is buzzing. That rumor went around at the time, since, as I said, Mansfield was not known to smoke. But no one (so far as I've been able to tell) was ever charged with negligence or manslaughter, so I'd take wiki with a grain of salt. Knowing William Fox as I've grown to know him, if he could have pinned the blame for Mansfield's death on someone, he would have, and cashed in on the result. Yahoo says it was a tossed match as well.
A group of people were standing idly by and one of them decided to take a smoke. He lit his match and, as careless smokers often do, tossed the still burning match away without thinking. It landed on Martha Mansfield and that incredibly flammable Civil War dress went up in flames. Martha was trapped inside due to the bulk of her costume. re: Think Bloomingidiot’s shit is only affecting the idiots that voted for him? Think again. Food makers nationwide are trimming salt to satisfy the dumb bastard.
When New York passed a law that cigarettes sold there had to be "firesafe," Big Tobacco™--who manufacture almost all the nominally small-brand cigarettes made for people who like cigarettes--dutifully destroyed all the products they sell everywhere in the world by adding whatever throat-ravaging poison makes them "firesafe" by New York's then-unique standards. When I and the forty other guys who smoke because we like cigarettes saw what happened, told y'all, said you're next, lardos, I'm sure we sounded pretty crazy. Well. The law is all kinds of ass, of course, but corporate obedience to it (and symbiotic enmeshment with it) is the real problem. New York is the tiniest, tiniest fraction of Big Tobacco's market. They sell mostly to Asia and Arab countries. But they all transformed their whole operations to suit New York the second the law passed...and oh, Philip Morris wrote the law. Some private companies said, "Fuck you, we're not wrecking our stuff; it's made for the people who buy it, not for the government" and stopped supplying New York. And so, soon, fascist vengeance: Good-tasting, not-intentionally-poisoned cigarettes were made illegal in over forty states. And incidentally, now good cigarettes don't exist anymore. Enjoy your fucked up food. It'll soon all be equally terrible. And blame Bloomberg if you want, but know that all the companies who are selling you Bloomberg's porridge could just tell him to go pound salt, if they wanted. But since the coming Bloomberg food laws (nascent, "guidelines," for now) are Big Food's OWN FUCKING IDEA--why would they? "Fight the real enemy," I'm saying. It's bigger than one smug fuck. I thought that part of the job of a police officer was to tolerate some increased risk. Apparently I was wrong....a $1,000,000 reward and 1,000s of cops working the case sounds like cops will tolerate zero risk, unlike what is expected of citizens who don't have the option of arming themselves. Hispanics, Latinos or whatever you want to call them have never voted for the GOP in large enough numbers whether they have been illegal, 1st generation, 2nd generation to make a bit of difference. B-but I was told that tax hikes were so unpopular that politicians in Washington wouldn't dream of even MENTIONING them any time in the near future! It's supposed to be Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy "together". In the comics, Poison Ivy rescues Harley after Joker dumps her by shooting her off in a rocket (Hahahahahahaha!!!). Ivy nurses her back to health using her special plants and Harley comes back from the near-dead. It's never shown, but Batgirl asks Harley if she and Ivy ever.......but Harley denies it. The U.S. government spent about $2.2 billion last year to provide phones to low-income Americans, but a Wall Street Journal review of the program shows that a large number of those who received the phones haven't proved they are eligible to receive them. The Lifeline program—begun in 1984 to ensure that poor people aren't cut off from jobs, families and emergency services—is funded by charges that appear on the monthly bills of every landline and wireless-phone customer. Payouts under the program have shot up from $819 million in 2008, as more wireless carriers have persuaded regulators to let them offer the service. Fraud in a government program. It can't be!
