How Long Does It Take To Get a Building Permit?

One of Adam Carolla's constant complaints is how regulated everything in society is in general and in particular how long and complex the city of Los Angeles has made doing the simplest of (legal) construction projects. Depending on where you live adding a pool to an existing house on flat stable land can take up to a year and cost $100K+ just for the permits and studies. If it's on a sloped lot... well you better be rich and have plenty of free time - although according to Adam even Jimmy Kimmel Joel McHale balked when he found what a new pool would cost him.

Well it turns out that lots of cities have decided to effectively stamp out any new (legal) building.

Here's a heat map created by Prof. Stephen Oliner of UCLA/AEI showing the average time to complete the planning process for new construction projects. As you can see depending on which county you happen to be in it can take up to 10x times longer. Basically any county in dark red doesn't truly want people to build anything new and will grind them down with process until they give up - all the while demanding federal and state help in bringing new jobs to the area.

Also: Meet Your New and Improved 3-D Printable AR-15 Magazine

The 3-D printing gunsmiths at Defense Distributed are about to release blueprints for an upgraded magazine that won't degrade even after you fire hundreds of rounds.

...In recent tests at a gun range near Austin, Texas, Defense Distributed fired a total of 342 rounds using the magazine with no issues, according to the group's founder, Cody Wilson. The group fired 227 of those rounds using full automatic fire, while swapping out the barrels on the rifle to keep them cool. The group also uploaded a promotional video, seen above, demonstrating a portion of the test.

And of course YouTube promptly pulled the video down although it seems to be back up now.

Oh Those Mean Nasty Republicans With Their Hateful Rhetoric

Yep just full of nasty hate speak and always lowering the country's politics into the muck.

Oh and by the way here is then Speaker of the House Tip O'Neil talking about President Reagan:

"It's sinful that this man is president of the United States." "The evil is in the White House at the present time. And that evil is a man who has no care and no concern for the working class of America and the future generations of America, and who likes to ride a horse. He's cold. He's mean. He's got ice water for blood."

Sigh. Why can't we have some of that Republican hate-speech like in the old days?

Fran Tarkenton: Mickelson Was Right - Taxes Kill Jobs

I guess he's old enough and rich enough now not to be intimidated by the Punish the Rich crowd:

Pro golfer Phil Mickelson has gotten a lot of flak for his recent comments about threatening to make "drastic changes" in his life due to state and federal tax increases. Never mind that he later backed off, saying he should have kept hi thoughts to himself and apologized to those he "upset or insulted."

Mickelson was telling the truth. If there's anything that should upset or insult Americans, it's just how much of their money the government takes. Mickelson estimates that more than 60% of his earnings are snatched in federal and state taxes (he lives in California). Should a private citizen, no matter how successful, really owe the government more than half of what he or she makes? Intuitively, this cannot make sense to anyone who believes in the principles of hard work and personal responsibility.

Our Best and Brightest: Hagel Got Money from 'Friends of Hamas', CIA Nominee Brennan is a Convert to Islam

Senate sources told Breitbart News exclusively that they have been informed that one of the reasons that President Barack Obama's nominee for Secretary of Defense, Chuck Hagel, has not turned over requested documents on his sources of foreign funding is that one of the names listed is a group purportedly called "Friends of Hamas.
Yesterday, a former U.S. Marine and FBI agent confirmed [that] John Brennan did convert to Islam... "Mr. Brennan did convert to Islam when he served in an official capacity on behalf of the United States in Saudi Arabia."

So what quality do the Dope and the Convert share? They were both hand-chosen by Obama.

The Blaze: Rise of the Next Conservative Media Giant?

Jonathon Last who's currently on a book tour is quite impressed with what Glenn Beck has created:

I'm fascinated by what Glenn Beck is doing with The Blaze as an internet TV network and it's incomprehensible why media reporters (and business reporters) aren't all over this story. Beck took a cable TV following, ported it out of an established network, and ushered into his own new network, which is not just an internet TV channel, but a pay internet TV channel. How is this not the most interesting, and potentially disruptive, media experiment since the advent of Fox News Channel? And yet when you look around the mainstream press . . . crickets.

...I went on The Blaze's Real News last night and came away even more impressed with the operation. What they're doing isn't an alt-version of Fox. It's actually more like what PBS might be in an alt-universe where it had created a hit newscast for younger, conservative viewers. It's long-form broadcast. It's high-energy, but not shout-y. And it's really, really smart.

Well Last isn't normally one to gush like a fanboy so I'm officially intrigued.

Antlers: The Hot New Bridal Accessory?

This listing is for a bridal mini hat by Fine & Fleurie featuring three handmade silk habotai flowers and a set of handmade sculpted antlers. Each flower is centered with ivory swarovski pearls and peeking out from behind the flowers are handsewn rhinestone leaves. Chocolate brown ribbon ties make for a perfect fit and and elastic band provides additional stability. This is a great piece for a fearless, whimsical bride.

And just $325 . I mocked but then it occurred to me that a) she looks good in antlers, b) brides have probably been wearing animal-based head thingies far longer than veils or funny hats, and c) it'd actually be kinda cool to have some antlers.

6 I'm 100% certain that a bride who spends $325 for a hat with antlers will look back in 10 or 20 years and cringe while her kids wonder what she was thinking.

Furthermore, if you're a groom and you see your bride walking down the aisle with antlers atop her head, wouldn't you be stifling a laugh? And having them sit askew doesn't help.

Brennan has been running a covert gun-running and terror-cell liquidating operation outside the normal chain of command per Obama, Petraeus didn't even know what was going on.

So, upon check-out for a book, I asked "So, do you happen to have any Blu-Ray DVDs?"

One librarian says something about "beasts" and only having one and goes into a back room. She says "You may not like it." I am thinking "I don't care. If it is a chick-flick, wifey will like it."

It was "The Secret Life of Bees". It's the only Blu-Ray DVD they have. I said "There is an empty shelf over there. You could print a label that says Blu-Ray Selection and when you get more you could add an s."

Anyway, we both liked the film. (Hoity-toity people call movies "films".)

Why she didn't think I would like it is beyond me. For all the singing talent (Latifa, Keys, Hudson) there, I was seriously disappointed that it was not a musical. And btw, there actually is stuff about bees.

So was the protests just for show or something. It is not easy to get in the the confirmation hearing and they had at least 8 people there including the leadership. Sure they hate drone strikes but having the covert operative of the Muslim Brotherhood in control of the CIA is not something they should be protesting. He would end the drone program on day one if he really is a MB operative or Muslim. And not just a poser Muslim.

274 The government taking more then 50% of your income is criminal. Seriously, that is more then the effect rate of serfs.

Speaking of which, it might not hurt for the Republicans to implement an amendment to the effect of "No one may be taxed at a rate greater then 50%* of his or income"

This changes the discussion from "the rich aren't paying their fair share" to "my God how much are we making people pay in taxes again???"

It might even prompt a change to a flatter tax structure. After all, is it "fair" that different people pay different tax rates primarily depending on how much Obama likes them?

We were getting by on $2T/year before Bush, which was about 17% of GDP IIRC.

A 17% flat or income tax tax sounds reasonable if a bit high.

337 Liberation theology[1] is a political movement in Catholic theology which interprets the teachings of Jesus Christ in relation to a liberation from unjust economic, political, or social conditions. It has been described by proponents as "an interpretation of Christian faith through the poor's suffering, their struggle and hope, and a critique of society and the Catholic faith and Christianity through the eyes of the poor",[2] and by detractors as Christianized Marxism.[3]

Clerical celibacy only really goes back about a millennium. It was, primarily intended to stop bishops and other Catholic leaders from giving church property to their heirs.

And Catholics have this solution, as opposed to Orthodox, because the latter never had the freedom from secular political control the latter had.

I'm pretty sure that would not be a problem in the modern world.

Yes, we should always try to understand the intent of an element of tradition before changing it...but some traditions will be found to be solutions to no longer existing problems.

420 Nobody cares about the Episcopal and Lutheran priests that have families. And yet, they have been accepted and ordained as Catholic priests for years. They all claim the apostolic succession.

Prepare to be assimilated! Resistance is futile! The Church is 2,000 years old. The Roman tradition of celibacy is "only" one thousand years old.

I am not buying into the Malachi "prophesies". If you believe that God (YHWH) loves us, it is simply not logical (study Thomas Aquinas) that He would destroy the world while still there are souls being born and being trained to love him.

I also do not believe in "the rapture." It is scripturally unsound and it denies the simple truth that we all must must our own death, our own cross.

I'm a federal agent. If I say he didn't (I'm not), does that cancel out the Marine/FBI Agents claim? Or do I need to have served in the military, too?

There doesn't seem to be any context to the claim, such as the Agent was assigned as a LEGAT to SA at the same time, and discussed the conversion with him, or conducted his National Security Clearance investigation.

There in the night stars are now right.
Eons have passed: now then at last
Prison walls break, Old Ones awake!
They will return: mankind will learn
New kinds of fear when they are here.
They will reclaim all in their name;
Hopes turn to black when they come back.
Ignorant fools, mankind now rules
Where they ruled then: it's theirs again

Stars brightly burning, boiling and churning
Bode a returning season of doom

Scary scary scary scary solstice
Very very very scary solstice

Up from the sea, from underground
Down from the sky, they're all around

New kinds of fear when they are here

Eons have passed: now then at last
Prison walls break, Old Ones awake!
Madness will reign, terror and pain
Woes without end where they extend.
Ignorant fools, mankind now rules

472 Someone may have already brought this up, but it's pretty common for the Saudis to offer lots of money--I'm talking tens of thousands of dollars--for prominent Westerners in their country to convert to Islam. They use it for propraganda inside the country--"Look how cool Islam is, even this Italian diplomat couldn't resist." I know two or three Marine officers who have done it, a former Defense Attache, and a bunch of other civilians from different countries. The Westerners mostly just put the money in the bank and laugh at the stupidity and shallow thought of Islam that thinks reciting 2-3 sentences in a language you probably don't even understand fundamentally changes your heart and your personal relationship, if any, with God. I don't know any that pursued Islam in their lives for even one second after their "conversions." I've had taxi drivers here in Amman claim to be teaching me Arabic, when they are trying to get me to recite the conversion litany. We usually just laugh at them, and try to get them to not charge for the ride if we recite it.

477 > For every cloud of smoke that follows a CIA drone strike in Pakistan, dozens of smaller plumes can be traced to a gaunt figure standing in a courtyard near the center of the agency’s Langley campus in Virginia.

The man with the nicotine habit is in his late 50s, with stubble on his face and the dark-suited wardrobe of an undertaker. As chief of the CIA’s Counterterrorism Center for the past six years, he has functioned in a funereal capacity for al-Qaeda.

Roger, which is the first name of his cover identity, may be the most consequential but least visible national security official in Washington — the principal architect of the CIA’s drone campaign and the leader of the hunt for Osama bin Laden. In many ways, he has also been the driving force of the Obama administration’s embrace of targeted killing as a centerpiece of its counterterrorism efforts.

Colleagues describe Roger as a collection of contradictions. A chain-smoker who spends countless hours on a treadmill. Notoriously surly yet able to win over enough support from subordinates and bosses to hold on to his job. He presides over a campaign that has killed thousands of Islamist militants and angered millions of Muslims, but he is himself a convert to Islam.

I saw it as a Knight riding in to save the downtrodden it ends up it's more just hassling your neighbor (it is necessary but not my calling). Went on to Vo Tech for Powdered Metals. 500 Is there more proof that Brennan converted...

Is there any more "proof" that Menendez was f*#ing underage girls in the Dominican? Or used his influence to help the "Good Dr." in Florida get coke thru the airport screening in the Dominican Republic?

"Allegedly." Smoke and fire...

Meanwhile, Panetta, and the CotJCoS, gives the JEF cover and "deniable plausibility" that he was "unplugged" while the gun-running mission in Benghazi was under siege. For 8 hours. And he "went to bed" while an Ambassador was being murdered! And the Admin. had that "you-tube" story "ready-and-waiting". MOTHERFUCKERS!

Is that the SOFREP info that came out the other day about Brennan using JSOC to hit AQ targets in Lybia? That info is VERY interesting, and the SOFREP guys seem to have their shit together. The conversion claim doesn't do us any good if the left can simply roll their eyes and marginalize it like the Birth Certificate claims (with a willing propaganda machine to do the heavy lifting).
The Conversion for money scheme posted above could also explain it.

I think it would be teh awesomesauce if there could be a constitutional amendment that says something along the lines of: If a majority of folks who can prove that they are in the country legally finally turn off the tv and realize that the elected leaders are fucking up royally and have to be uprooted and replaced by randomly chosen citizens who have at least heard of the bill of rights. It's a simple fun read. I think thats why people like it. I'm not the sharpest knife in the drawer but I had a good story to tell. That made it easier. Everytime I get a good review I am in disbelief. It was never meant to be anything other than therepy for me. Then by chance I gave it to a lady at the local ABC store to read. It just took on a life of it's own. Anna Puma, MPPPP, several others here all write way better than me. But they didn't live the story. Maybe that's the difference. That's why I can get away with not knowing how to write.

If you time it right so that all the ships the bombs are hidden on arrive at American ports at the same time. It doesn't even have to be big cargo ships.

It would take a while to scan everything, so that would allow more bomb carrying ships to arrive at American ports.

And then... BOOM!

Seattle, Oakland, Port of L.A., San Diego, Houston, New Orleans, Mobile, Miama, Boston, New York, Philidelphia, &c., &c. would all be gone.

Then Martial law is declared...

619 Denniger is a confused person.

I don't see much confusion in his writings at all. Economics, and the workings of the stock market are part mathematics, which is clear enough to anyone willing to seriously look at them, at partly psychology, which is anyone's guess when enough people will call bullshit on all the lies keeping the two appear elevated. But it will eventually happen, because the mathematics require it. He's not a nihilist at all, he's specifically trying to avoid the outcome of the current course (or anything as inadequate as 'the Ryan plan'), which is the inevitable collapse of our currency, making all other concerns moot.

As for the tea party, that's more ego than anything else. He tried to start something by mailing tea bags to DC around the time of TARP passage, and saw the tea party rallies (more properly flowing from the famous Santelli rant) as a continuation of that. And then was disappointed when they were pretty much the same people that traditionally side with the GOP (if neber really represented by them).

To correct, currency destruction is what the goldbugs over at zerohedge are worried most about. KD's thesis is that the Fed will run out of places to stuff dollars before we get to that point which leads immediately to massive deflation (see Japan's stock market over the last 20 years) and/or the inflation on business inputs crushes profit margins which, once sanity returns to the market, will crush their stock values as well, which is effectively deflationary (people who falsely think themselves wealthy today will find those paper assets vaporized one morning).

652 Parachuting in, sorry.

I *will* read the ONT after I scan today's posts but...

I've been working today and been chawing on a "serious" question (sorry ONTers, some of us live hours earliar than NY), off and on whilst driving between locations.

Why should anyone be shocked at Barry for arrogating to himself the powers of a King with his Executive Orders and somesuch?

It's not like he's the first one!

We should be PISSED at the Members of the House and the Senators (both parties!) who have, through sloth and corruption, venality and stupidity ,slowly ceded all their powers to the Executive branch!

And all those Governors (Yeah, you Jan Brewer and you too Christie!) licking DC's balls for the very Fed funds that you must *know* bind you to a contract for guaranteed future insolvency.

These assholes *LET* this SCOAMF (and Valerie Jarrett) dictate what they do! Both sides!

I long for the day when the Senate is comprised of a majority of people who were elected to their first office *after* I was born.

Sorry ONTers...

Been brewing.

No other outlet.

A ferinstance: Everyone always says, "defund the EPA".

That's never going to happen. (Fuck You, Nixon!)

Who has "oversight" on this whackadoo bueraucratic behemoth?

My entire life, they are part of the Executive Branch.

I would like to see the EPA's original commision!

Probably illegal because of Judiciary Act of 1789 or more likely, Wickard v. Filburn, somehow...

653 @model 1066, I'm sure there's been some technology sharing with those monkey bastards.

654 I'm in Santa Clara, CA. I've gone into the city with
a "what do I need?", gotten a checklist, and come back with that. It's
never taken me more than 8 hours of real work (sometimes over a couple
of days) to get the stuff together, and I've never had a problem pulling
a permit when I had the stuff.
That said, the staff in the City of
Santa Clara has this weird thing about acting like they work for the
people who pay their salaries.

I can't see anything happening in a nonviolent way unless the states choose to use their power to dissolve the fed gov't and try again.

657 I'm not at all convinced that even the more than honest Democrats that voted for this fraud will ever come around to the enormity of their mistake, and the cost of their vanity and foolishness. Years from now, when and if this country has begun the long road to recovery, if some idiot Democrat says 'yeah, I thought Obama was going to be a good presi...' that's the point I will get stabby.

658 I guess that I'm still stuck on the whole "inaliable" concept.

When you look at a figure such as Chris Dodd, it is almost impossible to imagine any portion of property or soul he *hasn't* managed to trade!

Nope. Such things don't exist around here.

I live in a house originally built in 1955 that was occupied for years by Merv Griffin's mother. It's developed.

661 It's funny how Iranian rocket technology can put a monkey into low earth orbit and completely change it's hair color and facial features when it comes back.

It's a miracle! China can pull it off too!

suggestion: don't ever give anyone any reason to think your property is "historical" unless you have already lined up a solid buyer that thinks that is just great and you have a shitload of their non-refundable earnest money.

663 I'm getting to the point where I start to hyperventilate when I think about living here -- in the land of my birth -- subject to the tender mercies of Jerry Brown, Di-Fi, Boxer, and Mike Honda. In the meantime, safer, more reasonable places are doing things like http://tinyurl.com/alas9qj

It's tough to find anything historical around here -- fifty years ago, it was mostly orchards.

I have personally witnessed gov't dipshits deciding that rotting trailer courts that were pieces of shit for their entire existence (and effectively beyond livability now) are "historical." I'm talking those 8 foot wide rounded top 1950's vintage shit -- not even a single 14x in the mix anywhere, and none of them in anything resembling good repair. Some dipshit fits the bill exactly.

672 Also.

Gabe Zimmerman was one of Gabby Gifford's staffers who is dead and who was one of the good guys.

He was so, so, wrong!

But he was smart and passionate!

I butted heads with him many times over the phone.

673 Apparently, there are parks and fountains and shit, where we used to make tree houses and "forts" in the windbreaks between Farmer Kuhn's Feed Corn acres...

We used to have "corn-fights", in the '80's!

Favorite memory of mine is me and Laura (who had Horsies!) calvary charging a bunch of burn-out, "big-kids", holding down a "fort" that they had appropiated from some littler kids, to smoke bongs in.
