I should just throw up this quick recommnedation-- "Spycraft." A history of the CIA's technical side of tradecraft from about 1950-1980. Interesting. Mostly anecdotal, mostly just stories, and mostly sort of basic. But then, I needed "basic."
I liked it.
I was actually looking for a book on non-technical tradecraft (like countersurveillance practice) but I liked this more techy stuff.
Political slant: I don't want to cast aspersions but the author is plainly conservative.

It's kind of a chili concentrate. It's cooked thick and then formed into bricks. That's how you buy it at the store.
To cook it, you just get a knife and slice off as much as you want into a heating pan; add the meat of your choice and you've got good, hot, thick chili.

Reminds me of the story Gary tells behind a song he wrote. He and his wife out in California at some uppity dinner thingy.
An older lady asks him where they are from. He tells her and her reply, in her best Mrs. Thurston Howell III voice was
"Kansas? How awful."
So Gary comes home and and writes a song called "Midwestern".
Very humorous slamming of her type and the coasts in general. Hope he records it.
Not sure where God vacations but when He goes home,, He's Midwestern.

I been reading the threads and I have seen nothing about him going to college or where. If he went to college he could have done ROTC, but he was only in the Navy five years. You don't move up three ranks that quickly unless you are, oh wait, never mind.

At least three times. Ensign, Lt Jg, then Lt. I guess you could make the point he was not promoted to Ensign but started there. Also, if he was a reservists for a while he could have gained a rank, but I thought he was kicked out of the Navy too.Sounds like the guy had the 'black chip" on his shoulder and expected to get automatic promotions or he would be pissed.

Once upon a time, when I was a lib, I subscribed to TNR. It was always liberal, but when Marty Peretz was editor, it was also strongly pro-Israel, which set it apart from rags like Mother Jones and the Village Voice. And it occasionally published articles which countered the lefty Party Line in other ways. I remember reading a great article by Ron Radosh (who is now at Pajamas Media) in the TNR about Henry Wallace, the Commie and pro-Stalinist apologist FDR dropped from the ticket in favor of Truman in 1944. (BTW, a few weeks ago, Oliver Stone wrote a letter to the WSJ about what a great guy Wallace was and how the entire Cold War could have been avoided if only Wallace had become president in '45. Wallace still has plenty of lefty fanboys.)
TNR once tried, somewhat, to be a bit evenhanded. But that was over 20 years ago. Peretz must be long gone at this point (if not he's like 180 years old) and I had the impression he was the one who put the brakes on over there.

Went to their '91-92 New Years Eve (Wherever We May Roam tour) concert. In the Tokyo Dome. Oh. My. Fucking. God. Was that ever awesome. Some Japanese band, Slayer (I think), Europe (The Final Countdown, get it?), and then Metallica. Absolutely crawling with chicks. After, we went out and partied in Roppongi (Buzz and Lexington Queen, IIRC).
