Malware Warning on Google Chrome
Possibly a Residual Alarm from a Previous, Now Fixed, Infection?

I'm searching for a solution now-- apparently this virus is being inserted all over the web (there are references to it everywhere, if you google it).

Google Chrome even blocked the Google-owned YouTube.

Until we get this fixed you might want to keep off this site. Maybe turn off the computer.

Explanation? Gabe did what I didn't and read to the end.

The errors are similar to the experience of many Chrome users earlier in the week, when error warnings spread wide Monday morning after a Silicon Valley web-advertising company's website was hacked with malware.

In the earlier case, Netseer's corporate website was infected, which caused Chrome to block it; however, the company's ad-serving infrastructure and corporate website had the same domain, so any ad served by Netseer caused Chrome to block the page.

Google did not immediately respond to an email request for comment Saturday, outside normal business hours, but said in response to Monday's incident that it does not comment on individual malware cases.

Well, that's not as clear as I'd like it, but what I think it means is that this is a false warning, at the moment.

I think it means that, at least. I think it means that malware was detected, and now all of Netseer is being blacklisted by Chrome, despite the fact that the malware problem is (again, I think this is what they mean) now handled.

29 IMO, it's an advertising hack that does it....I've picked up some nasty shit from some very reputable sites, (bigtiddies.com, butteredboobies.com, skankyhosonchoochoos.com). -Infect an ad server, and insert your malware- and it pops up everywhere. To be completely safe, take your router, and modem outside and shoot them.

Nothing new...(I've picked up some horrid crap from Insty, MSNBC....a number of places). Aint nothing wrong with AOS.

On a serious note, I'm wondering why Chrome et al. are not "smart" enough to merely block the suspected bad elements of a web site (with a notification to the end user) instead of blocking the entire bloody site as a security hazard. Infected ad servers are hardly a new problem.

Do the following:

1.Open the Chrome Settings pulldown (top right "3 bars" icon)

2.Click Settings

3.Click Show Advanced Settings (at the bottom of the window)

4. UNCHECK Phishing and Malware Detection ==> rely on your AV software

5.Close

The "Malware Alert" is no longer seen.

This suggests to me that Google Chrome checks a (Google?) site for "broadcast alerts" of this type, and probably others.

If such a site exists, who controls this site and who is allowed to send/post suspicious links to it? Who verifies the links?

86 The hosts file is an IP remapping scheme that's implemented low down at the TCP/IP level.

IOW - it works with anything that goes out your tubes connection.

You can enter things in it and cause them to go into a black hole at 127.0.0.1

Like this:

# For example:
#
# 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
# 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host

# localhost name resolution is handled within DNS itself.
# 127.0.0.1 localhost
# ::1 localhost

127.0.0.1 c1.zedo.com
127.0.0.1 c2.zedo.com
127.0.0.1 c3.zedo.com
127.0.0.1 c4.zedo.com
127.0.0.1 c5.zedo.com
127.0.0.1 c6.zedo.com
127.0.0.1 c7.zedo.com
127.0.0.1 c8.zedo.com

That take references to all those vile zedo things and sends them nowhere.

On Windows the HOSTS file lives in the directory

C:\windows\system32\drivers\etc

You will need to login as admin to edit it.

91 Oh, if your editor insists on renaming it HOSTS.txt, you'll want to rename it back to just plain "HOSTS" with no file extension.

If you google/bing around a bit you'll find a number of preconfigured hosts files that nuke ad sites, pron, etc.

Next time you boot, the TCP/IP should find it and load the remapping list.

ProTip for office warriors - you can really fuck with someone by remapping some common web sites to other ummm..."things". Ping/Tracert will get you a site's IP addr. If the user is not tech savvy, this will drive'em nuts.

The block of Ulsterman also applied to sites containing a link. The case I noticed was TheCoffeShopBlog.net. I asked BC if he had any indication of malware of any sort, and he said no.

TheCoffeShopBlog.net is a Northern California blog, almost at the Oregon state line, although the host could be in San Jose.

But this does point, very slightly, away from the alerts being regional.

103 SRWare Iron is an open source version of Google's Chrome with all the tracking bits removed. Configuring NoScript is a hassle;/. Better than default chrome.

PA has the proper protection solution using HOSTS file. Download Notepad++ (free open source) editor and use it for editing the HOSTS file.

MVP is a preconfigured HOSTS file service and its free.

104 I keep getting "unresponsive script" with google chrome language in it and firefox hangs and freezes. So I signed out of my google account and avoided using google.

I guess I'm hiding from Google, which is probably futile, but what the hey. It helps.

110 Well I just spent the day struggling with Windows. Another day of my precious life lost to Bllionaire Gates's crappy OS. I run with Opera (who?), JavaScript off, cookies off, plugins off, virusware 24 /7. Yet today I found 2 viruses and 3 Trojans.

Chrome on this old box can't even see the Internet. So I never use that. Really should get away from Google. What's that other not Bing no tracking search page, ix something?

Computers could be smart. Self checking self maintaining. Virus ware should never have been necessary. But programmers are stupid.

But you know what was smart? A time machine out of a DeLorean. Brilliant gimmick. Better than the sled or the bird statue or Luke I am your father.

Written with text to speech. Which is kind of cool. More consistently reliable than Auto incorrect.

111 first, learn how to use a computer so that you can fix it if it breaks.
second, don't use google chrome.
third, keep your anti-virus spyware software up to date, don't download coupons or play stupid online games.... if any of that is too difficult for you, sell your computer, buy two bricks and use them to dash your own brains out, you are too stupid to live and you are making everyone else's life harder than it needs to be.
