Overnight Open Thread (9 Feb 2013)

Some of y'all have been whining for some Doom! OK, here ya go. The Coming Obamacare Recession. If you're just starting to plan for this now, you're behind the power curve.

Consumer and business spending, which have been rising modestly, will continue to rise if consumers and businesses have confidence in the future. The new year, however, brought with it higher taxes, and not just the increases on income over $400,000 recently won by the Obama forces. Many Obamacare taxes became effective January 1, 2013, including a 0.9% increase in Medicare Taxes and an extra 3.8% tax on investment income, including dividends, interest, capital gains, and rent income, for households earning more than $250,000.

Some of the ugly details of Obamacare, the most far-reaching piece of legislation to be passed without a single member of Congress having actually read it—indeed not even having been allowed a serious chance to read it—have only been gaining attention in recent months. Looking forward to 2014, employers are now looking at an additional $63 per insured employee fee to compensate insurance companies for the added costs of covering previously uninsured people with pre-existing conditions. That’s supposed to phase out by 2017, but if you believe that you probably also bought the line that Obama is in favor of a “balanced” approach to deficit reduction.

The Walking Dead Returns

Finally. Season Three, Part Deaux starts back up for The Walking Dead tomorrow night at 9PM on AMC. I'm stoked to see how this season plays out.

Gingerscrimination

Oh man. I'm sure the Ginger Mafia won't be pleased with this news. Quvenzhane Wallis Up For The Role Of Annie?

Hello Kitty

It would seem Hello Kitty is our latest astronaut. Girl Launches Hello Kitty Doll Into Space. Judging by how this little experiment ended, we need to ban Hello Kitty dolls. If it'll save just one tree....

And speaking of space, while we won't quite yet find out about sex in space, we just might finally get a little Boobie Pron In Space.

British celebrity rag The Sun is reporting that next year, the first porn star will blast off into space. She will be riding a private rocket, paying her own $100,000 dollar ticket to low earth orbit and completing her own training for the mission. Will the world finally find out about space sex? According to CoCo Brown, star of Big Booty Bomb 2, the answer is no. But wait, there is still hope, according to the article: "Maybe I'll pop my boob out and take a photo of it with the Earth in the background." The first space porn!

10 The Left’s Fiscal Manichæan Fraud

It is a common statement from the Left that we must raise taxes or cut vital services to the bone. This is a false choice; this is a Manichæan choice. That choice only makes sense if the money that is already being collected and spent is being done with maximum efficiently and effectiveness. Most people, who are busy living their own lives, can barely even guess what all the money the government spends, let alone where fraud and abuse is coming from.

66 I was planning to post this in the ONT, then the ???? thread turned to hair styles, so I put it there. Sure enough, the ONT came up immediately.

I read an interesting article in the Wall Street Journal the other day:

http://tinyurl.com/agqzvjj

It's about a hairstylist who became interested in recreating ancient Greek and Roman hairdos. Her name is Janet Stephens, and she has a number of videos on YouTube. Here's one:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M_HPjg-f8iQ

I think it's fascinating. Keep in mind that wealthy upper-class women in those days had servants to do that. I would imagine that elaborate, time-consuming hairstyles were probably a mark of wealth and luxury.

No, I'm not interested in becoming a hair stylist. Stop looking at me like that.

Not a fan of slow-cooked chicken. Dries out like an old apple with none of the flavor.

Soak bamboo skewers in water for at least 2 hrs. Soy, mirin, lower part of green onion, and a spoon of sugar -> half into marinade with chix for an hour, and half reserved for basting.

Heat up coals on hibachi or grill.

Pick out chix on to paper towels, skewer with skewers, cook over glowing coals two or three at a time, turning AMPERSAND basting alternately. Don't burn.

Rice, japanese or korean pickled schtuff, chopped green onion, and ice cold beer. #Winning.

OK, here you go. Here's the July 1952 issue of Popular Mechanics. Turn to page 109 for an article about the new missile test site at Cape Canaveral, Florida.

http://tinyurl.com/a2r8xj9

This was only two years after the first rocket launch at the Cape, so it's an interesting time capsule.

As of the end of June 1952, there had been a total of 44 launches:

2 Bumper/Wac
24 Lark
18 Matador

The first two launches at the Cape were a German V-2 with an American Wac Corporal serving as a second stage, called Project Bumper.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bumper_(rocket)

The Lark was an early anti-aircraft missile, originally conceived in late World War II as a countermeasure for kamikazes. The war ended before its first test flight. By the early 50s it was obsolete and was used for training missile crews.

http://www.astronautix.com/lvs/lark.htm

The Matador was an early winged cruise missile, which eventually became operational. There were many tests of the Matador at Cape Canaveral in the 1950s.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MGM-1_Matador

And that's it. At the time the Popular Mechanics article was written, ballistic missiles, satellites, and astronauts were still far in the future.

Obsolete computer stuff is like nostalgia candy for me. It's probably all a huge waste of time, but the increase in prices of vintage stuff has at least probably saved me time.

I've been thinking of trying to set up some VMs around old OSs, from OS/2 back to DOS/Windows or even Desqview, just to play with. Not quite the same as the hardware, but like I said people "discovered" it was collectible (some of it).

I still want to gut a PS/2 Model 80 case and build a new computer into it. BIG RED SWITCH!

230 I've been running a 1.6 GHz machine for the last 6 years and it still can run any piece of software I need.

I've always maintained that an old PII 333mhz machine was "good enough" for what most people ever needed if it had the right software.

W2K was the last Windows that even made an attempt to be svelte.

I've been dabbling with an old Pentium Pro 200mhz machine recently running NT4 with 128M that has a programming project I fiddle with occasionally.

That PPro with NT4 is about as snappy feeling in the UI as all the modern shit. No eye candy, no animations, just the basics.

Yeah, I'm in California, sadly. I could probably do that in about two trips in my Tardis-style station wagon (seriously I carried a whole assembled patio furniture set in one trip).

Truck shipping seems to have gone up in the last few years (*cough*).

Like I said, I'd be in hog heaven - but it would be cost-prohibitive.

*Somebody* there must do recycling. If you don't require certified data security you will find someone to take them through craigslist or something, or just pull the HDs.

For some reason local clearouts always seem to be auctions, and people here pay *way* too much for used equipment - I think some of it is government IT people stocking up on parts for out-of-warranty stuff.

They don't want most of it. The local Goodwill store in my area also serve as electronic waste dumping sites because they needed to get rid of the stuff but didn't want to turn people away. So they got set up with companies that ship it all to the third world to extract what little of value is there.

I'm going to have to take some stuff there next week. We're having all of the windows done in the house and I need to make room for the installers to work. Which means I have to free up some space in my storage locker by giving up a lot of old 'just in case' stuff that would once in a while generate some income by being able to read some antique storage format or whatever. It's been long enough that I doubt any more revenue is going to result and the locker rent is always an issue. (I'm trying to convince my packrat mother to get rid of enough stuff so that we can merge into a single locker and save some money.)

254 There are some groups trying to work on making old hardware useful again, but most of it is centered around Linux, which *works* but it's a bit of a Smarmy Self-Centered College Occupier as far as treating "dummy end users" right.

There's still a *big* "write it yourself" or "you have to learn how to do everything my way" attitude in the support community.

I keep trying to add linux machines to my fold, but every time I run into major software issues. HP/UX with X sucked ass, but it was easier to work on because it was consistent.

Standards don't just make it easier for companies, they make it easier for users. I tried to set up XBMC on Linux for my media machine and it turned into a simple, 137-step process that "might or might not work" depending on your hardware.

It sometimes seems like every piece of complex software requires its own 30-page readme file.

Still Has A Way To Go. Apple did not do everything right, but they "get" simple interfaces. You can sort of do that in Linux (IMHO they're all ugly), but not when it comes to installing and configuring.

There's another group working on a NT4 clone. That could interesting.

The Linux "community" has a real attitude problem when it comes to usability and making the tech accessible. This is something MS excels at because they can just order someone to do the drudge/scutt work of actual productization, internationalization, special needs, etc, etc.

Years ago I wrote some utilities that would have internationalized all the Linux kernel code to use message include files automatically. There was no interest at all. The utils did all the nasty shit a translated version has to do by hand now. I couldn't gen any interest among the priesthood. None.

I have no doubt that eventually he'll get tagged for it. Basically once the "mothers" break up, the biological mother will either sue for child support, or end up on state support and the state will collect.

My worry is that once we start decided that more than two people are a child's parents, we're opening all sorts of ugly cans of worms.

There's an old fifties horror show on Retro TV that I'm half watching.

I put the Kubuntu flavor of Linux on a laptop, and the install was easy, and I don't consider myself a geek. The desktop was almost a twin, appearance-wise, to the Win7 laptop I now have. The Kubuntu laptop died when I drop-tested it in a fit of pique, but the OS had nothing to do with the problem I had. I should do another Linux machine.

Since you ended up in court,....are these now ex-friends??

Yup. Two I had only known for a couple of months, but the other one was a long time friend, like for 8 years on and off.

The best part is that J and I had a mutual friend, M, who also completely cut me off after the incident. If the situation had been reversed, I would not have let J wake up alone in an ER. I certainly would have been concerned if a longtime friend did something so completely out of character and would probably have tried to, I don't know, find out what was wrong that triggered this and try to help them.

Does that actually happen or is it wishful thinking? The lesbians I see around here are not hawt. They fit the cliche right down to the baggy button up shirt, dockers, vest, bad hair cut, and chubby. I know one long term couple who both so closely resemble that cliche that when I see them, I have to stop and think about which is which.

Another one had played in that baseball league that was portrayed in "A League of Their Own". When you saw her out of the corner of your eye, you thought she was a man.

Don't get me wrong. These are very nice women. They're fun to hang out with, but not the type of person a guy would term "hawt" or try to pick up in a bar.

I don't. I remember sitting around laughing and joking, and waking up in the ER seven hours later, but the only memory I have in between is J on the floor, and I'm on top of him yelling something about how a civil war is coming, and then collapsing.

According to the reports, one of the other guests, Stephanie, started it by talking about stem cell research, which devolved into an argument about Obamacare and went from there. I had spent most of the evening flirting with Stephanie's sister, which she really didn't like, and everyone had been drinking pretty extensively so I think there was already some hostility that fed all sides.

I have known some lipstick lesbians who would definitely be termed hot by most other humans. But they often turn out to be 'flexible.' Meaning they decide after a certain point they want a family and find some guy to make one with. They may still have some girlfriends on the side but in two cases I know of will go into complete denial about their past escapades. One of them even claims she was a virgin when she married at 29 because another woman being in past the wrist doesn't count.

OTOH, I've know a fair number of the other variety, that would almost certainly reveal a genetic trait if it weren't too controversial for any researcher to approach with a ten foot Pole or eight foot Hungarian. (I've seen some claims that such women have blood chemistry that would be assumed to come from a man but it doesn't appear to have any mainstream support.) I know one couple who look almost exactly alike except one is about 15% smaller. Almost like a bigger Mini-Me.

439 I'm stealing this joke, BTW:

The Sunnyshchool teacher gave her class an assignment, to have their parents tell them a story with a moral at the end. The following Sunday, the kids came back and, one by one, told their stories. There were all the regular stories, of course: spilled milk and pennies saved. Finally, only Janie was left. The teacher grimaced inwardly and asked her, “Janie, do you have a story to share?”

‘Yes ma’am. Daddy told me a story about Mommy. She was a Marine pilot in Desert Storm. Her plane got hit, so she had to bail out over enemy territory. All she had was a flask of whiskey, a pistol, and a survival knife. She drank the whiskey on the way down, so the bottle wouldn’t break; and she landed right in the middle of twenty Iraqi troops. She shot fifteen of them with the pistol, then ran out of bullets. She killed four more with the knife, when the blade broke, so she killed the last Iraqi with her bare hands.”

”Good Heavens!” said the horrified teacher. “What did your Daddy tell you was the moral of this horrible story’?”

“Don’t f**k with Mommy when she’s been drinking.”

There's your mistake. Cops don't like dealing with people who are drunk and belligerent. They've been hit by them, and they prefer not being hit. Problem is, it's hard for them to distinguish between the drunk who is just swearing at them, and the one who will actually take a swing.

I had a co-worker whose husband was a cop. They really do take a lot of crap from people. And, yes, there are those cops who throw their authority around. Her husband knew a couple.

456 I have known some lipstick lesbians who would definitely be termed hot by most other humans.

I'll throw out the Colorado Alex theory of sexual orientation:

1) 1-2% of men are born homosexual. Another 1-2% become homosexual as a result of environmental factors.

2) 1-2% of Women are lesbians. Another 5-8% are born bisexual, and another 5-8% are hard wired to accommodate it, but are still more interested in men.

Basically in a small tribe, homosexual men are beneficial because they reduce competition for mates while still able to provide for the tribe as a whole. Meanwhile, women tend to be bisexual, as an attraction to other women would help to ease tension between women in the tribe, ensure mutual support for raising children, and help bind together multiple wives of the same man.

I may be mistaken, but back in the day, there were no "computer keyboards" as we know them. Your input to the machine was by way of punched cards, or by way of a Teletype machine, which was originally used to talk to other Teletype machines. And I don't think Teletypes had a caret character.
I used to use a Teletype to enter data into the old Baroid BLS2000 mud logging system. And it would talk back via the same Teletype. Most commands could be executed by typing a 3-digit number.

554 So, whoever was recommending Dogfish Head brews.....the fish meeting was at a restaurant that was having an event where they turned 15 taps over to DH beers. I had a "120", a "Burton Baton" DIPA, and one aged on wood from, IIRC, Paraguay ["Palo Santo"].

The "house style" was very hoppy, but not the piney, bitter, astringent, or even cleanly floral hops. More of a fruity, earthy flavor -- without too much "nose". The 120 came across as almost "hop syrup". The DIPA was cleaner, but still heavy. The Palo Santo was almost a stout or a porter, and clung stubbornly to the palate. As the BH remarked (several minutes after imbibing a single drop), "I can still taste it -- but it'd be good over ice cream."

My fourth beer of the night was a double-red from Ninkasi (Eugene, OR), that had the right "bite" to cleanse the palate from the Dogfish Head. I have to confess that my own taste in beer runs more toward the "San Diego style" where the hyper-concentrated hops are almost metallic at first sip, then rapidly bloom to a floral and herbal explosion as the liquid warms, fading quickly away. Nothing too "sticky" or "syrupy".

I just don't see why women would be more likely to be bisexual, or hard wired to accomodate both.
I don't even get that teacher thing, where women teachers are going after 14 year old boys. It just seems that most women are hard wired to be attracted to men, not boys, not both men and women, men. And if they're homosexual, why would they be attracted to a man at all. Don't get it.Posted by: nerdygirl at February 10, 2013 12:48 AM (bKckD)

You're speaking from theory. In theory, there's no difference between theory and practice. In practice, there is.

Colorado Alex (much respect) is speaking from observation and inference.

For my part, I suspect women's sexuality is more ... flexible, and less hard-wired. As evidence I would cite who become fixated on inanimate objects (shoes, leather, rubber), which IAFAIK is virtually unknown in women. A homosexual affair in a woman may be a one-off; in a man, it means you're dealing with a fruit.

RWC, I hope this helps:
Just this side of Heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge...
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food and water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable. All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing: they miss someone very special to them; who had to be left behind. They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. The bright eyes are intent; the eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to break away from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster. YOU have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart. THEN YOU CROSS RAINBOW BRIDGE TOGETHER...

588 So, I've been reading this free homeless guide written by a man who, at time of print, had been homeless in the San Diego area from 2005-2009, and was in danger of becoming so once again.

http://tinyurl.com/auuhoee

Pretty good read. He's not at all shy about calling out "homers" he takes umbrage with, especially Democrat moms with their kids in parks.

(.....Me, in mortal fear of becoming homeless myself thanks to Obummer? What ever gave you that idea?)

I didn't realize that, in San Diego, you can't legally sleep anywhere outside, not even in your car. Probably SOP for most cities.

....

This strikes me as being inhumane just for the sake of being inhumane. (And makes me even more scared at the prospect of being homeless. Thought I could at least find a beach or somewhere to crash on. No dice, apparently. So that no one gets the wrong idea, I'm not in any danger right now of that happening....but I'm looking at life without my dad, eventually, and it's scaring the hell out of me. Trying to do all I can to expand my skillset and remain employable, but goddamned if this economy isn't the most frightening thing I've ever been exposed to. Got a wife, too. If I'm made to suffer, I can deal. If I'm made to watch her suffer, and I can't fix it, that'll break me.)

I understand the potential/likely downsides (increased illegal activity, littering, potential public urination/defecation, complaints from neighborhoods with their new outdoor neighbors, etc.), but couldn't cities at least throw the truly imperiled a bone and let them sleep on the damned sidewalk/in parks somewhere after 10:00 pm without being harassed? Or, Jesus Christ, IN THEIR CARS?

I never thought much before of just how subhumanly the homeless are treated (not speaking sanctimoniously; I once didn't even look at a homeless person trying to solicit money in a drive-through when he was obviously signalling to get my attention; I rightfully regret that now). It's really heartbreaking. The author notes that, once you become "one of us," as he calls it, you'll find out who your true friends really are. And you'll find out quickly how it feels, day in, day out, to not be wanted by anyone around you wherever you go.

It breaks my heart that this happens, and it is happening, more and more, to people who truly do want to work and be successful, contributing members of society. Not saying that the "lifers" who are there due to an unwillingness to try and fix it, and/or substance addiction, are any more deserving of this treatment than those just down on their life luck (or victims of a terrible fucking uncaring bastard of a president). But, it's slowly dawning on me that becoming homeless can very well happen to anyone, and to me. And it starts such a destructive cycle and makes you at risk of being ticketed/arrested for everything you do, that it just amazes and humbles me to hear of those who have hit rock bottom....and have climbed back out.

I'd love to hear anyone else's thoughts about homelessness in general, as well as on policies of public sleeping. Fair/unfair? More we can do here? (NOT from government, from good ol' private sector freedom.)

This stuff's in my head now, and I'm trying to come to terms with my fear.

(Combine this discussion with a public school system that utterly fails kids, and makes them all but bound to become homeless.....Damn, we're pretty fucked up in this society in several respects, aren't we? Skeletons in our closet abound, with devastating human tolls.)

There are some crazed / dangerous people who are homeless, but there are also people who just fell below a sort of "minimum supportable level" and hit a place where "the rules" we all live by turn into a nightmare.

It is difficult to address because it's all power-mad rulemakers and ideological interest groups who make any practical attempt a nightmare, as well as the cultural baggage.

A supremely rich country can deal with that sort of thing, but with the left tearing the foundation of the economy away, that's not us.

At least we're not in Brazil, I remember some of the photos of what happened to the homeless and street urchins who were "inconvenient" when a major international event came to Rio. And that's a "civilized" country.

I think the sleeping in cars thing is pretty dumb. I know why they did it but it's pretty dumb.

Why would anybody vote or accept sending their child to a public school? Why aren't the parents going balls deep against the teachers union?

1) Most parents don't realize how bad the schools are in some parts of the country. If you're middle class, then the schools probably aren't so bad that you've started to worry.

2) It inevitably becomes, "Oh, I don't like the teachers unions, but our child's teacher is wonderful" and then you get nowhere because they don't want to upset Mrs. Winterbottom who little Johnny just adores.

Posted by: Colorado Alex at February 10, 2013 01:47 AM (hpDVh)

601 Public schools don't "fail" children in the sense that they're not there to help the children. It's a jobs program with the "side benefit" of creating a chaotic and ignorant, easily manipulated population.

You can scream it from the rooftops, but the MFM shouts you down because they back the unions first and the destructive agenda second.

Finally got around to reading a pdf of Quigley's Tragedy Hope and came across something that reminded me of Ace, so I'm dumpinga paragraphhere; hope you don't mind:
From the broadest point of view, the aggressors of 1931-1941 were attacking the whole nineteenth century way of life and some of the most fundamental attributes of Western Civilization itself. They were in revolt against democracy, against the parliamentary system, against laissez faire and the liberal outlook, against nationalism (although in the name of nationalism), against humanitarianism, against science, and against all respect for human dignity and human decency. It was an attempt to brutalize men into a mass of unthinking atoms whose reactions could be controlled by methods of mass communication and directed to increase the profits and power of an alliance of militarists, heavy-industrialists, landlords, and psychopathic political organizers recruitedfrom the dregs of society. That the society which they came to control could have created such dregs, men who were totally untouched by the traditions of Western Civilization and who were restrained by no social relationships at all, and that it could have allowed the militarists and industrialists to use these dregs as an instrument for seizing control of the state raise profound doubts about the nature of that society and about its real allegiance to the traditions to which it paid lip service.

610 posted at NY Post tonight at 11:30, re: Benghazi

Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans were killed in the attack on the US consulate because of a secret low-level war in which American hit squads took out leaders of al Qaeda militias, which retaliated in Benghazi. There was never a protest at the consulate over the infamous anti-Islamist YouTube video.

So says the new 80-page e-book, “Benghazi: The Definitive Report” (William Morrow) by Jack Murphy and Brandon Webb, two military veterans who specialize in reporting about clandestine operations at the website SOFREP.com. Their book, which they say is based on interviews with well-placed security types but contains virtually no checkable sourcing, is loaded with explosive allegations.

John Brennan was given free rein in North Africa by Obama, a book says.
The fall of Moammar Khadafy presented a tricky situation for us: Khadafy, though a despot to his own people, had nevertheless been cooperating with the US, which among other favors was granted the right to use Libyan territory for CIA black sites.

Moreover, the opposition to Khadafy wasn’t exactly led by a gang of Libyan George Washingtons. Many of the rebel leaders were sharia-loving members of al Qaeda who had come from jihadist strongholds in the cities of Derna and Benghazi, which are so tied up in Islamist fundamentalism that they were major exporters of guerilla warriors who fought the US in Iraq.

Having helped to engineer the ouster of Khadafy with air strikes eft Obama with the problem of a revitalized al Qaeda springing up to fill the void.

Obama gave his chief counterterrorism advisor, John Brennan, who is now the nominee to be the next leader of the CIA, a blank check. Brennan could do just about whatever he needed to do in North Africa and the Mideast, contend Murphy and Webb. Brennan chose to conduct a dangerous classified war without looping in Stevens, who paid with his life for his ignorance, according to the book.

The Joint Special Operations Command, which Brennan controls, is a collection of special forces outside of the regular military command originally formed as a hostage-rescue team. But in the middle of last summer, say Murphy and Webb, troops operating clandestinely under JSOC began infiltrating Libya.

“With the first phase of the Global War on Terror (GWOT) all but over,” say Murphy and Webb, “JSOC was starting in on ‘GWOT Season 2,’ as it were, where North Africa was seen as the most dangerous hub of terrorist activity.”

Murphy and Webb go on to make a shocking charge: “The nature of these operations remains highly classified. They were never intended to be known to anyone outside a very small circle in the Special Operations community and within Obama’s National Security Council. Ambassador Stevens, the CIA chief of station in Tripoli and then-director of the CIA, Gen. [David] Petraeus, had little if any knowledge about these JSOC missions.”

613 On the public school thing --

I remember my high school years, and honestly, we kids screwed the pooch. We provided a lot of peer pressure against any kid that actively participated in anything the teacher was trying to accomplish.

About the same time, it was becoming impossible for the school system to discipline kids, and took jacks or better to throw kids who screwed it up for everyone out of the school.

Then, they started looking for every other way to make the teacher's job impossible -- stuff like "mainstreaming" handicapped kids.

Yes, there are bad teachers. Still, we don't need to make the good teachers drag around all this other shit. We are not just screwing this up in a couple of ways -- we are screwing this up in just about every possible way.

THIS!

Teachers who are complaining that they should be paid more are somewhat justified, since they're being forced to do the work of several people. Of course, the ideal solution would be not to force them to do that. but ohnoes we can't do that, because it would mean things like tracking classes or separating out kids with disabilities or anything else that looks like "inequality". And meanwhile, everyone is getting the shaft because 1 person, try as they might, cannot do all that no matter how much you pay them.

I think there are some things we can do in this regard. One of them is to stop letting them tell us their bullshit while we remain pleasant about it. If it is bullshit, we should just say so.

The plan was to park outside the consulate, climb over the walls and ambush the attackers with a machine gun, rifles and grenades called “golden eggs.” At first, it worked beautifully. Many of the jihadists were killed and others were confused and scrambling for cover. The authors estimate more than 100 attackers were killed in total.

Woods took the opportunity to evacuate the DSS agents at the compound, putting them in a Land Cruiser and directing them back to the local CIA building.

Woods told them to turn right outside the consulate: “Do not go left into bad guy land,” he said. Confused, they turned left anyway and took on heavy gunfire, though the vehicle’s armor held up and they eventually made it to the CIA hideout.

At the consulate, Woods entered the blazing building in which Smith and Stevens had hidden when the terrorists’ assault began. Woods found Smith, who was unconscious and would shortly die.

646 As Woods was thanking Doherty, though, the attackers were adjusting their mortar fire, and getting closer with each volley. A French 81 mm round ended Woods’ life, though as he fell, his body shielded another security agent, saving his life.

Doherty was killed instantly by a direct hit on his position from another mortar round.

From below, several other agents rushed up to the roof and put themselves in the line of fire while they saved the other two men’s lives. They lowered the bodies down with rope they had cut down from their gym. One JSOC agent strapped a wounded DSS man to his back, then climbed down a ladder under fire.

Everyone at the CIA compound might well have been killed if they had remained, but an unmanned intelligence drone overhead signalled, by tracing heat signatures, that a much larger hostile force was gathering.

Some 30 Americans loaded into vehicles and evacuated the area. They were fired on again during the drive to the airport, but made it and escaped to Tripoli on two flights, at 7:30 and 8:30 a.m. Sept. 12. Stevens’ body was finally recovered when a local was sent to the Benghazi morgue and “there was likely a money exchange,” the authors say, to release the remains, which were on the 8:30 plane.

650 WHAT DOES IT MATTER!?

Posted by: Hillary Clinton at February 10, 2013 02:52 AM (M5sjN)

651 So, who is to blame for Benghazi? The authors are withering on the subject of John Brennan, our likely next CIA director.

“The overrunning of the consulate and the killing of the two [Navy SEALs] must have come as a shock to” then-CIA chief David Petraeus, Murphy and Webb say. Petraeus had been cut out of the loop as Brennan passed up to Director of Central Intelligence James Clapper “the bare minimum of information needed to keep these secret missions legal.”

Since the CIA didn’t know about the secretive hit squads targeting al Qaeda, the agency and the consulate personnel were caught off guard: “They had no idea that the Special Operations missions would be kicking the hornet’s nest in Libya and therefore could not prepare for the fallout that would result.” Petraeus, the authors say, “was furious about being left in the lurch by the Obama administration.”

Either Murphy or Webb was present, they say, at a Veterans Day parade in New York in 2011 during which Petraeus’s personal security detail lost contact with him for an hour. The authors suggest that such shoddy treatment was a sign that other leading CIA figures wanted him out and “cashed in their chips” by allowing details of the general’s affair with Paula Broadwell, which the FBI had known about for months, to become public. Petraeus’ fall was a “palace coup,” Murphy and Webb claim.

As Woods was thanking Doherty, though, the attackers were adjusting their mortar fire, and getting closer with each volley.

One JSOC agent strapped a wounded DSS man to his back, then climbed down a ladder under fire

I understand, and have struggled mightily with this question, but suspect that that would be the case regardless of which decision I'd made.

I only hope in a future life that I could make such a decision in a context that I alonewould fight the good fight, and bear the consequences.

For many, they see that as true either way. The fact that the other side isn't any better in that regard was very well disguised by the wide-spread knowledge of the choom bus.

It is very interesting to me that so many can look down on the allies they want at election time because they are too rigid in their beliefs -- while, at the exact same time, remaining at least equally rigid in their views that those same people should be in jail, presumably starting the day after the election. Very unique sales pitch. I wonder why it isn't working better.

This is not a flinging of a gauntlet -- I won't argue in support of any of this, and I won't defend anyone's foolish decisions. I just want people here to take a moment to ponder -- how many will soon be in essentially the same position over weapons and new laws that would jail YOU over what you don't believe should be a
crime.

Under every economic model not associated with FDR and Obama, every bit of that makes sense.

Will that remain so with long term unemployment at very high levels (not the governments BS stats, but the real number of people without work, or without enough work) for years or decades at a time?
