Dr. Benjamin Carson's Galvanizing Speech at the National Prayer Breakfast

He heckled the grieving president. How rude.

As far as his background -- he's a legitimately gifted surgeon, specializing in pediatric neurology. He has the distinction of being the first surgeon to successfully separate Siamese twins. (He realized he could put them into hypothermic arrest at the key part of the surgery, when the twins would otherwise bleed out on the table, as previous separated-Siamese Twins had.)

I mention that because people are saying "Carson for President!" and I was just curious about whether that seems feasible.

Status: Feasible

Downside: It's "rude" to say what you believe in front of the Liberal Christ, before whom you must bow and quaver

Other Downsides: Lose the goatee, Hippie. This isn't a Jefferson Airplane concert. Serious men have serious facial hair or, preferably, serious clean-shaving.

Carson said he didn't want to run... but did allow "if the Lord grabbed me by the collar and made me do it, I would."

Lovely Bio:

[Carson's mother] required book reports from her boys every week, which would be returned to them corrected, at which point they would get a new assignment with direction to improve. They found out years later that friends of their mother from church were correcting the reports, as their mother could not read. Amazing woman, raised amazing men.

In other words, stop with the kneejerk reactions to the news media. Left and right, if you let the world get filtered to you through their eyes, whether you agree with them or not, you're still getting the world filtered to you through their eyes.

26 Dr. Ben Carson is an amazing human being. His mother put him through school, demanding excellence, and not allowing him to fritter his life away with drugs, and thug behavior. She Would. Not. Allow. It. As a result, he is the top pediatric neurosurgeon in the US, and very possibly the world.

I met one of his former scrub nurses who had moved and worked in CCU when my husband had heart surgery. She said Dr. Carson was the most amazing man she had ever met. A phenomenal doctor, and with fantastic bed side manner. He worked with residents and nurses, finding ways to help them be better at their job, while always putting the care of the patient first. The waiting list to see him was at least a year (for our daughter, when they thought she had a brain tumor. Since it was kidneys problems, it is obvious that our doctor was NOT the caliber of Dr. Carson.)

So, the thing to do is pray that God will call him to serve his country by running for office, and then pray he is not corrupted by it. He has my vote.

That's true. OTOH I think it's important for people to be tested in public service/elected office to ensure that when the chips are down, they stick by the principles that they espouse... as well as knowing when to compromise.

That's why I have trouble getting excited about 1st termers, especially in the Senate where as members of the minority all they can do is make speeches w/out really accomplishing much. See Paul, Rand and Mike Lee. What we're seeing with Rubio with this immigration stuff is very telling, I think.

In addition, it's important (to me, anyway) to know where they fall on a wide range of issues. One reason I was never super-enthusiastic about Condi Rice for POTUS, even tho I admire her a great deal, is she's basically blank slate on domestic policy.

That said, Dr. Carson sure is exciting to have on our team. Doubt he'd want to leave his practice to become a politician, however.

You don't think becoming head (and Dean) of the Neurology Department of Johns Hopkins Medical School took some political savvy? Yes, he is eminently qualified for the position-he is the best at what he does. But he also has a gift for interpersonal relationships, which is the key to being a good politician-connecting to people.

Bubba Clinton had that. He was flipping brilliant at reaching both individuals and groups (although he mastered grabbing the womens). But he was also selected for a Rhodes scholarship, so he wasn't a slouch intellectually.

As Ace and others have said, if he can master medical school and his extremely difficult specialty of pediatric neurology (which is harder than adult neurology), then he can easily prepare for running for president by 2016.

And a ticket of him and Allen West would be freaking awesome.

I want an asshole conservative as president, because in order to clean this mess up, the next president, if he is a conservative, will have to have a hard demeanor.

This doesn't make one a disciple of the Strong Man on the White Horse. It makes one simply... rational.

To win the White House you need credibility, charisma, biography, and X.

I am a big believer in evolution and I consider it personally a Bad Thing if someone doesn't believe in evolution, so my *personal* inclination would be to agree.

However, the main problem with evolution rejectivism is the suggestion that the person in question is anti-science and anti-reason. Not the belief itself, just that suggestion.

Will liberals make an issue of this? Of course.

In 1994, Carson and his wife, Candy, founded the Carson Scholars Fund, a
nonprofit organization rewarding students in fourth through 11th grades
who strive for academic excellence and demonstrate a strong commitment
to their communities. “We want these scholars to think that they are
world-beaters,” he says. “You take a fourth-, fifth- or sixth-grader and
give them all the attention for academic achievement and humanitarian
qualities and you have started something.”

The Carson Scholars Fund has awarded more than 3,400 college
scholarships. Through annual golf tournaments, galas and other events,
along with the help of a star-studded board of directors, the
organization continues to raise money to expand the program. His dream
is to have a Carson Scholar in every school in the country.

President Washington was a classical gentleman who worked his way up. He was considered to be from a family of good social standing though humble of means who used surveying to work his way up to respectability. married money and engaged in the activities of a noble young man volunteering for the militia, and engaging in Freemasonry as a social network and duty.

Washington felt cowed at times by some of the more brilliant intellects of the founders but earned respect for his belief in the wealth potential of America and his moral judgement.

It was said of his mind that "Ben Franklin, Jefferson, Adams, Hamilton, Madison, and Mason knew many things like a Fox, but Washington understood one big thing like a porcupine.

This was "heckling" just like that was, that is to say, it wasn't.

Posted by: ace at February 09, 2013 01:50 PM (LCRYB)"

The problem with that assumption is that the only "sciences" that matter in politics are climate science and some selected parts of evolution (the parts that help "disprove" religion, not the parts that support the hypothesis that some groups of people are different than others). Neuroscience isn't on the political menu, so it's almost irrelevant. You could be a scientist in your day job, but if you don't toe the line in those two politicized "sciences", you are not sufficiently dedicated to science, according to the Left. Are there enough voters who could see through that bullshit? Perhaps.

Dr. Ben Carson is an amazing human being. His mother put him through
school, demanding excellence, and not allowing him to fritter his life
away with drugs, and thug behavior. She Would. Not. Allow. It. As a
result, he is the top pediatric neurosurgeon in the US, and very
possibly the world.

I met one of his former scrub nurses who had moved and worked in CCU
when my husband had heart surgery. She said Dr. Carson was the most
amazing man she had ever met. A phenomenal doctor, and with fantastic
bed side manner. He worked with residents and nurses, finding ways to
help them be better at their job, while always putting the care of the
patient first. The waiting list to see him was at least a year (for our
daughter, when they thought she had a brain tumor. Since it was kidneys
problems, it is obvious that our doctor was NOT the caliber of Dr.
Carson.)

So, the thing to do is pray that God will call him to serve his
country by running for office, and then pray he is not corrupted by it.
He has my vote.

As a RN this makes him the finest kind.

What was so good about the speech, among other messages by Dr. Carson, he contrasted his life to The Chin-jutting Highly Offended Jug-eared Jackass. Both had teen moms. One raised a man of high standards and accomplishments, goals, morals and faith. The other raised a pigeon-toed pansy with affirmative action who once ate a dog.

The speech was full of freedom (his American history and detail are wonderful in the speech...and the eagle story at the end...great, great speech)...but the "compare and contrast" of these two black men were in full and unedited view. Bravo, Dr. Carson, for your courage, convictions and profession. Bravo.

306 Loved this speech.

On a related topic, this week I sent my liberal mom a transcript of Rand Paul's speech on foreign policy. I've had to be really careful about what I share with my parents in the last few years to avoid starting big painful arguments. But I thought the Rand Paul speech contained some ideas that my mom would agree with, so I presented it to her that way; just sharing something I thought interesting that I thought might have a few points you would agree with. I didn't make any attempt to change her mind or promote my own views.

My mom loved the speech. She wrote a long email back to me with lots of liberal twaddle in it, but the amazing thing was that in a non-confrontational way she was able to digest some conservative ideas. And she liked them.

I bring this up because this speech by Dr. Carson is one that I could share with my mother in a non-confrontational way. I think he could win converts to conservatism. He has an easy-going, non-threatening manner and lots of credibility. He builds a relationship of trust with his audience before he skewers liberal ideas. And he skewers liberal ideas in a way that seems both genteel and non-partisan. This is how I think we need to fight our cultural and political war.

I bring this up because I know a lot of people want bomb-throwing, we especially like it from people like Newt Gingrich and She Who Cannot Be Named. But I think their style, while it gives us an outlet for our frustration and anger, does very little to win converts. It's just not very productive for most of the people that we need to reach. And I think we need to reach them. I don't see any other way out of this mess, because a full scale civil war is simply going to harden people in their positions and the only way to win it would be to kill everyone who disagrees with us.

The way to reach people, imo, is not to tell them how wrong they are, but to find areas of agreement and build on them. If you tell people you think they are wrong and stupid, even by subtle implication, they will immediately turn you off. It's just human nature. To win converts we are going to have to be nice, build trust, show that we understand how they feel about various positions, and then present an alternative point of view without invalidating them. I know, probably almost impossible. But we have to try. Even if it's just one person at a time. Dr. Carson brilliantly shows how to do this.

I think the "insulting" part was probably when Dr. Carson spoke of tithing 10% being good enough for God, and that we should not use the tax code to "hurt people" because they are successful. That was direct hit on TFG's class warfare bullshit.

Also I think people may not see the significance of Dr. Carson's very first comments about political correctness. PC is a major tenet of cultural Marxism (Google it) which seeeks to stifle any discussion of actual differences between races, genders, people who achieve and those who don't.TFG is a major practitioner of this school of thought policing. His entire MO now is to de-legitimize conservative thought and shame anyone who speaks against his brand of politics and policy. Dr. Carson directly challenged him on this, which I am sure TFG noticed immediately, but it went over the heads of everyone else there.

330 Stephie, the problem with the "non-bomb-thrower" idea, especially as regards Rand Paul Dr. Carson is partly that they haven't been marginalized by the full force of the media yet. Yes, there are bomb-throwers on the right and I agree that they aren't helpful in the situations you discuss. The problem is that the MSM takes all our spokespersons ( ideas) and paints them as extreme, crazy, etc. Was it ever really Sarah Palin's ideas or statements that were "crazy"? If we get an articulate, charismatic person, the press MUST destroys him or her because of the threat. Only when they veer left (Christie, Rubio on immigration) can they be partially accepted - at least until such a time as they run against a Democrat.

333 Wonderful, gratifying speech. Especially liked the rictus fake-grin of The One, as his anti American agenda was taken apart by reason and the core beliefs of faith, and the historical values of this country.

I don't have an opinion on whether Dr. Carson would be Presidential as such, but what I see written all over him is Keynote Address! I hope the powers that be take notice.

Side bet: if B Hussain is smart (which is open to debate) he will try to co opt Dr. C to head some meaningless "Commission" to keep him out of mischief, and try to ally him with the Administration (e.g. dangle goodies for education and other causes Dr. C holds dear).

If this comes to pass, I hope Dr. C sees the bigger picture and has nothing to do with this odious regime that has occupied the White House

While I like what I'm hearing from Carson, and he's saying the right things so far, we don't know shit about him on other issues. We had the same high hopes with Christie and look how that turned out. If Carson is serious, then some media types should interview him some more and get his feelings on other issues besides what's already been said so far.

Excellent point of reference. Even though he was obviously the better choice over the JEF, at no point did I feel confident that he'd be able to overcome the extreme ambivalence which voters felt toward him that made him lose to McRINO in 2008. The only hope was that voters would realize what an inept retard the Indonesian was but that wasn't nearly enough.

That wasn't me that was feeling that. I've always taken Fat Boy to be what he is; a former federal prosecutor used to bullying people to get his fucking way based on the sheer financial hell that he can bring to bear on a person to defend him/herself. 365 Dead thread, but I wanted to add my two cents worth. I remember some years back Teh Oprah featured Dr. Carson on her show. I was wondering who invited him as the keynote speaker, wouldn't it be funny if she recommended him?

The speech was awesome. He has big, huge balls that are not kept in his wife's purse to say what he did in front of Barry and Teh Mooch.

Like someone else said, yes, it looked like Barry was checking his phone, and I too thought he did the middle finger/side of face thing at one point (on the side opposite of the cameras). He started with his index finger, then switched to the middle.

One last thing, Dr. Carson has an incredible bedside manner. My sister adopted a baby from Korea. She had some medical issues. One was an ASD (atrial septal defect), or a hole in the heart, the other was a craniofacial abnormality. There was some concern about developmental delays and future health problems. My sister took her to Dr. Carson. He
Examined my niece, ordered some imaging and recommended some exercises and a follow-up appointment. On the subsequent appointment he told my sister they would continue to monitor my niece in a year. My sister brought her back a year later, and he said "I think she's going to be fine, her issue with her skull is more a cosmetic thing, don't have to worry about it from a medical standpoint. I could do surgery, but most people won't even notice there's anything abnormal about her face because when they see her, all they will see is that big "Riley" smile." My sister loved him and his office staff. She said he always ran behind, but it was so worth it to see him.

367 @ 161 "If he is at a big teaching hospital, he is swimming in leftist doctrine,
maybe he wants to get the hell out of there."

Medicine isn't as horribly politicized as the rest of the academy. In fact, most people in medicine who actually practice medicine, as opposed to the academics, lean conservative. Staying up all night with drunks and other aholes will quickly make you realize that the "disadvantaged" are that way because of bad choices, not because of bad luck and NOT because of rich people.
