Are You a Geek? If So, TV's Here to Help

Gabe said "there are some interesting pilots slated for the fall," and I was going to say "LIAR!!"

But, if you're geeky, then this is just an embarrassment of riches.

I haven't seen this kind of sci-fi/fantasy/Android Cop kind of schedule since I was younger told by a much-older brother about the sci-fi/superhero craze of the late seventies which I totally know nothing about first hand being far too young to have seen it firsthand.

Eh, I don't want to encourage people to watch TV. But you don't listen to me anyway.

Is this all, ultimately because of Doctor Who? I don't watch a lot of TV (he lied) but I'm having trouble of thinking of other big-hit sci-fi/fantasy shows that would justify this newest craze.

Maybe the Hunger Games plus Twilight? Or them, plus the Marvel movies?

The reason I mention Doctor Who is just my personal memory -- when I started watching it, after years of avoiding that type of show, I thought, "Oh right, I used to like this sort of action-adventure-fantasy sort of thing, so long ago."

So long ago, when my much-older brother (seriously, there was like a 10 year gap, at least; maybe 20) relayed the plots of old episodes of the Six Million Dollar Man.

7 Why wait for next fall? We talk a lot about trying to retake the culture and the media, and there's a show that deserves particular attention for advancing a Conservative perspective on a major network TONIGHT. Not only that, it's really entertaning.

ABC's "Last Man Standing" with Tim Allen is very funny and has a definite rightward bent. For example, last week's episode was about one of the daughters' decision to join JROTC and finding inspiration in a wounded veteran. The protagonist is an unabashed critic of Obama and there's some really humorous material.

The show comes on ABC on Fridays and of course you can find past episodes online. The show doesn't just deserve your support, it's the rare sitcom that's actually funny these days. Check it out, Fridays at 8 ET.

8 Right now there are way too many police procedurals on. Bones, which is so absurdly specific I'd say it was a parody if I didn't know better, is about not forensics generally, but reconstructive skeletal forensics specifically.

Is that still on? No? Well it was.

I had a dream one time, an actual dream, not making this up. Back when they added the fourth entry in the Law & ORder franchise, I actually had a dream that I saw a commercial called "Law & Order: High Guard," about a team of detectives on a massive satellite-city orbiting the earth in the future.

Like, I dreamed they expanded the franchise to space.

And I'm kind of shocked they didn't.

13 Ace: It is several things. We are in a Golden Age of Sci-Fi since the late 1970s. Zombies are an in crowd enthusiasm, guilty pleasure, and/or something to say you like to be cool. Lost and The Walking Dead are TV phenoms. Sci Fi is optimistic for the most part and sells well when times are tough. MSM entertainment is mostly repurposed dreck except for the Sci Fi themed shows. It all adds up.

Yeah, look: You should ditch that. The company's ditching it. They have all but said "This was a massive error."

You can now buy dowloads of the actual early red-box sets with the actual rules, I think on like rpg.net or rpg.com. Or something. WotC has a page with old game downloads, sort of cheap-ish, as it's a download.

You can also download the new rules for the NEW edition, the playtest rules, which are still all funky but at least they got rid of the 4e "Magic: the Dungeoning" power card sort of thing. And, it's free.

Also on TV at the time were Stargate Atlantis, Smallville, Babylon 5 (well, that had ended after its 5 year arc, but was still being rerun), Eureka, that one show with the chick who was dead and a reaper...

Miller's Sherlock is more likeable than Cumberpatch's, I think. BC's way makes him out to be more Asperger-ish. Miller's is a little more "approachable". Both shows have their strengths, but I would go with Elementary just for the reason that shows are being made. Moffat is taking his sweet time coming up with more eps and it sucks.

Which is, heresy of heresies, a weakness with Sherlock stories. If you are using another character simply as a sounding board, you might just be a hack. At least the Downey/Law movies tried to give Watson something to do.

Posted by: weft cut-loop at February 08, 2013 08:19 PM (NTBjC)

95 Her role is to probe Sherlock's psyche, so really her character just exists to further explore the Sherlock character.

Then she's wasted as a character on the show. She does little more than follow Sherlock around and help with the medical side of investigations. Now that we're into the "Moriarty" territory, it'll get interesting. I think Liu gets kidnapped like Irene Adler did and Miller has to find her before she ends up the same way.

Also, Miller's Sherlock seems to be a more accurate replica of the character from lore, i.e. drug-addled, whoring, etc. Cumberpatch is clean as a whistle and has no apparent weaknesses or flaws.

98 Oh, we're going to get into teh ghey in D-and-D? Okay, then.

Carl Sargent had taken over Greyhawk duties in the early 1990s and quickly got around to making it dark, gritty, and demon-haunted. One of his innovations was to stuff the See of Medegia (= Renaissance Papal Rome) balls-deep with sodomites. So apparently there was a meme around then that it had become "Gayhawk".

I viewed an IRC chat once where Gary Gygax was asked what he thought about homosexuality in Greyhawk / old-school D-and-D. His reaction: "Bugger off!". His next reaction was "who cares?!". Perfect Tory response.

Post-Sargent getting himself disappeared and all, I think it was in "Dead Gods" that Monte Cook retcon'ed Nilonim - the
dissident dark elf down in the Vault who wasn't a demon-worshipper - into being a
homosexual. (When I thought it over, I figured, yeah, I guess he was.)

I found it on demand but they put a few episodes on a week, I started watching it in December 2010, in the middle of Season 1 and then it went to the end of Season 3. Instead of going to Season 4 they went back to Season 1. I finally caught up on it because they put three or four hours of reruns on AMC Sunday mornings. Mad Men is good and very true to life, according to an older friend that was in the business at that time.

1, that's not lucy liu's fault as an actress, it's a writers' problem;

2, traditionally that's really what Watson was in filmed versions. In the books, he's more important because of his role as narrator and the point of view character, but he loses that in filmed versions.

196 i always mention this but:

Mark Frost, co-creator of Twin Peaks, and a good writer (bunch of bestsellers), wrote a book called "The List of Seven" in which a young doctor named Arthur Conan Doyle (Doyle was in fact a doctor) meets a swashbuckling detective and righter-of-wrongs who will one day be the inspiration for Sherlock Holmes.

It's good, it's fun, it's pulpy. Good villain. Very very bad sick-bunny Moriarity analogue.

Much as I enjoy Rifftrax, they keep coming back to the same stable of jokes; Pop Reference, Internet Meme Reference, Generic Joke, Kevin sings...and it feels like Nelson is the only one doing any writing.

CT just makes me laugh more consistently; the jokes have better variety, are much better observations about the movie being watched and also include the smattering of pop references and internet memes.

Oh and one thing Rifftrax will absolutely not do is any kind of risky humor, such as racial jokes. CT has no problem with that, and their targets are everyone.

There's been an American serieswith that premiseas well. Mann and Machine aired back in the mid-80s, but only lasted for a single season.

Of the new crop at the link... maybe some of them will be good. But I'm already feeling pretty negative about most of them. The only one that I'm hyped about right off the bat is the potential SHIELD series, which seems pretty likely to air given the information provided on it.

216 the only bad thing about List of Seven is something that happens a lot with derivative work:

I've seen a bunch of derivative works in which they HAVE to introduce the supernatural (or the fake supernatural). Like the first RDJr movie. Because of Hound of the Baskervilles. Even though that wasn't a typical story. But everyone thinks of that, so.

Anyway, List of Seven goes down that road yet again. I'm not sure I buy the plot.

I totally mised that. Her character in TA is interesting as she's very very patriotic and will do anything (including sex) to complete her mission. The writers are careful to let her humanity through occasionally, as with her husband/fellow KGB agent.

In fact, it was her patriotism that suprised me, even though it is for Mother Russia. Plus, the soundtrack is great, too. And it's the original performances, not bad studio wanna-be ripoffs.

251 Truman North,
it's gotten worse here. I had to go to a few windows before I could see outside because ice is forming on the windows. I'd say it's five to six inches now.

The 4 pm driving ban was emailed to be by Red Mass Group. I had my personal email closed almost all day.

The winds have picked up here too.
I still don't think it's so bad that we couldn't drive. Patrick is trying to make up for his huge screw up in 2007, there was storm that that was forecast to start at noon on a Thursday in December, he let all non-essential public workers out then and private companies left it up to employees discretion. I was going to leave at one point but my brother worked in off 128 North then and would come home on Rte 2 and could see all the cars sitting in traffic that was not moving.

It took some people 13 hours to get home. I left around 10 pm that night and Boylston St, Mass Ave and all the streets in Boston were untreated because they let everyone out at the same time.

Police cars were spinning out of control on Mass Ave in Boston. Once I got into Cambridge the roads were fine, even in my small city.

Patrick and Menino both ruined that one.

i wasn't disagreeing-- I was trying to say I think a Gothic Soap Opera could/would work. I was just trying to say the basic premise of Dark Shadows could sustain a series, maybe.

So long as it was nothing at all like the movie.

Posted by: ace at February 08, 2013 08:58 PM (LCRYB)

283 Dark Shadows: Super when I was in high school, and all my sisters and I watched it every day. Movie PO'd me because they changed the entire thing, so I never watched it.

Days of Our Lives: Part of the NBC Pantheon of soap operas which included not only Days, but The Doctors, Another World, and Another World Somerset.

I used to watch the entire NBC line-up every afternoon, wasting 3 1/2 hours of my life every day. Back in the 80's I gave up soaps for Lent (don't laugh) and it improved my life tremendously. Never watched them again.

However, I could still give you the characters and plot lines. Pathetic, but true.

I worked with two (younger, heterosexual) engineers who taped it daily a few years back. I could not believe they would tape that drivel, but they did. Actors on that show start young and die of natural causes in real life.

Normally, I just pop in on my wife long enough to ask whether Sammy (sp?), Victor, Marlena, et. al are good guys or bad guys presently.

401 Textbook on Americanism - not so much a textbook as a single page book. Paragraph 1:

1. What Is the Basic Issue in the World Today?

The basic issue in the world today is between two principles: Individualism and Collectivism.
Individualism holds that man has inalienable rights which cannot be taken away from him by any other man, nor by any number, group or collective of other men. Therefore, each man exists by his own right and for his own sake, not for the sake of the group.
Collectivism holds that man has no rights; that his work, his body and his personality belong to the group; that the group can do with him as it pleases, in any manner it pleases, for the sake of whatever it decides to be its own welfare. Therefore, each man exists only by the permission of the group and for the sake of the group.
These two principles are the roots of two opposite social systems. The basic issue of the world today is between these two systems.

436 And this, then I'll stop pasting shit:

2. What Is a Social System?

A social system is a code of laws which men observe in order to live together. Such a code must have a basic principle, a starting point, or it cannot be devised. The starting point is the question: Isthe power of society limited or unlimited?
Individualism answers: The power of society is limited by the inalienable, individual rights of man. Society may make only such laws as do not violate these rights.
Collectivism answers: The power of society is unlimited. Society may make any laws it wishes, and force them upon anyone in any manner it wishes.
Example: Under a system of Individualism, a million men cannot pass a law to kill one man for their own benefit. If they go ahead and kill him, they are breaking the law -- which protects his right to life -- and they are punished.
Under a system of Collectivism, a million men (or anyone claiming to represent them) can pass a law to kill one man (or any minority), whenever they think they would benefit by his death. His right to live is not recognized.
Under Individualism, it is illegal to kill the man and it is legal for him to protect himself. The law is on the side of a right. Under Collectivism, it is legal for the majority to kill a man and it is illegal for him to defend himself. The law is on the side of a number.
In the first case, the law represents a moral principle.
In the second case, the law represents the idea that there are no moral principles, and men can do anything they please, provided there's enough of them.
Under a system of Individualism, men are equal before the law at all times. Each has the same rights, whether he is alone or has a million others with him.
Under a system of Collectivism, men have to gang up on one another -- and whoever has the biggest gang at the moment, holds all rights, while the loser (the individual or the minority) has none. Any man can be an absolute master or a helpless slave -- according to the size of his gang.
An example of the first system: The United States of America. (See: The Declaration of Independence.)
An example of the second system: Soviet Russia and Nazi Germany.
Under the Soviet system, millions of peasants or "kulaks" were exterminated by law, a law justified by the pretext that this was for the benefit of the majority, which the ruling group contended was anti-kulak. Under the Nazi system, millions of Jews were exterminated by law, a law justified by the pretext that this was for the benefit of the majority, which the ruling group contended was anti-Semitic.
The Soviet law and the Nazi law were the unavoidable and consistent result of the principle of Collectivism. When applied in practice, a principle which recognizes no morality and no individual rights, can result in nothing except brutality.
Keep this in mind when you try to decide what is the proper social system. You have to start by answering the first question. Either the power of society is limited, or it is not. It can't be both.

They decided a long time ago not to do them in any particular order to keep from having "Joel' and 'Mike' sets. There are also complications with the rights on a lot of the movies. 'Catalina Caper' couldn't even be shown on TV for a long time because the original owners sprang out of the woodwork and wanted a big piece of the action.

You better off just downloading one of the monster torrents for the whole series, including the Season 0 that only played in Minnesota before they got picked up by Comedy Central to take it national. The complete torrent will be about 83 GB. Just remember to buy a box set occasionally to reward the creators. Better yet, RiffTrax and Cinematic Titanic will take donations on their sites, understanding that trying to fight the torrents is a lost cause.

1. Put It To The Torch

Am I supposed to be sorry, my words struck a nerve

Am I supposed to be sorry that I lift dust where my footsteps once were

Maybe I’m supposed to care for grand ideas never expressed

It took no heart, pierced through so clear

More verbal piss in the well of your fear

Here’s your apology, here’s to burning out

And here’s to fading away

Fuck you both, I just put it to the torch

So with those new found ideals

You’ll be well on your way

And changing agendas is part of your game

Your sense of entitlement strengthens your pain

It shows on your twisted face

Wearing a drawn out shade

I take it all and I put it to the torch

I torch it all without a shred of remorse

Here’s your apology, here’s to burning out

And here’s to fading away

Fuck you both, I just put it to the torch

Put it to the torch

And let it burn!

Oh torch it!

I am going to make a serious effort to be at the next mega meetup if able.

543 First episode, cops raid his house on a pretext,
claiming its a drugs bust; based on the reactions (like Mrs. Hudson
saying "Again?" or something) it's plain it's a plausible pretext to
search him.

In the novels, Sherlock Holmes used cocaine, but it was legal in Victorian England, AFAIK. Watson was a retired military doctor, and something of a foil. He was used to ask the questions of Holmes that revealed his awesome powers of deduction. But Watson was no fool, and was brave and loyal.

545 Weft-Loop - totally agree: was willing to give it a chance, but found it sadly wanting. To be fair, though, I thought Millennium was the best take on the whole criminal profiler genre (even with all the supernatural elements thrown in), so I'm more than a little biased.

Capt. Backfire, I do not believe in lying about my age. i am 53. I probably could be your mother but I never wanted kids even when I was a little girl.

547 Dead? Nice.

Dark Shadows used to mess with my head. The lead actress had one of those faces that look like a different person's face from every angle. That's the only time I've ever seen that on TV. Watching it was like constantly re-failing a neuropathology test.

Anyway, Hulu has every episode of Sledge Hammer on it. That was the last show made entirely of Groucho/Dangerfield/Airplane-style eye-roller jokes. Fantastic crap.

548 I remember watching the original "Adventures of Superman" and "Adventures of Robin Hood"shows. The original broadcasts, circa 1955.

TV shows have gone downhill ever since then.

550 Not on the list: Daniel Knauf - the TV writer/producer who came out of the closet as a conservative the week Andrew Brietbart died - has a new show he's shooting.

It's about.........DRACULA. 1st ep is already in the can.

From the NBC promo:
------------------------------------------
Series introduces Dracula as he arrives in London, posing as an American entrepreneur who maintains that he wants to bring modern science to Victorian society. In reality, he hopes to wreak revenge on the people who ruined his life centuries earlier. There's only one circumstance that can potentially thwart his plan: Dracula falls hopelessly in love with a woman who seems to be a reincarnation of his dead wife.
----------------------------------
He wrote/produced HBO's Carnivale, a couple episodes of Spartacus Season 1 on Starz.

He's also active on Twitter and is a very funny guy.

552 Nothing about Defiance?

Granted, it is on the SyFy network, but I have hopes. http://bit.ly/wNedzd

553 no matter how many sci-fi/fantasy shows they put out today none of them are any good, why?

the people who create these shows are raging progressives who always infuse their political ideaology into their work whether it be conscious or unconscious. Progressivism is a small, petty and regressive ideaology and so shows produced by the progressive mind have those same faults, these shows arepetty, unimaginative and small in scope.

the progressive mindset is unable to cope with the thematic expansiveness and freedom inherit in the genre.
