Sargent's response evidently was..........crickets chirping. How To Get Out Of A DUI I really don't think this will work here in the States but hey, you never know. 'High Tolerance' Cited In Man's Drunk Driving Win. He claimed, however, that he didn't feel under the influence at all while driving to work. He also blamed the glögg for putting him so far over the limit, but pleaded with the court that he shouldn't be convicted because he thought the traditional Swedish mulled wine he had been drinking was simply an alcohol-free variety. The court agreed, stating in its ruling that as the man drinks alcohol every day, even before heading to work, he must have a high tolerance for alcohol, Skånskan wrote. The court therefore threw out the charges altogether and the man was set free.Boot Phone ![]() ![]() Tonight's ONT brought to you by: ![]() Comments1

The State is Mother; The State is Father
With young adults increasingly becoming overgrown children who expect awesome stuff and awesome life just be handed to them, and with the state becoming evermore the benefactor, protector, and provider, if not outright substitute parent, it is becoming ever more true that “the state is mother; the state is father.” Aside from the fact that tyrannical cults of personality tend to have such parental figures in an almost deified status (Hitler, Stalin, Kim Il Sung, Mao Zedong, &c.), the reverence and obedience once shown to real parents has withered away with the breakdown of the family and has been taken up by Leviathan. It is easy to slam a Chevy engine in them. Everything Toyota made until the 80's was all to GM specs. The stock engine in an FJ-40 and all land cruisers until the FJ 8o in 1986 was a 1948 iron block GM knock off straight six. They were fuel injected them in 1988 with the FJ-62. I have two of those. I have a "buddy" 17 year-old "friend".
Adopted Russian kid of one of my best bud's. His dad, one of my "besties" is not a hunter, nor a particular fan of firearms... (not that he is "against". Just doesn't have the history. And he more than makes up for that. 2 adoptees and the coolest fellow you could ever know. Just sayin'. Sweetheart guy). Anyway, the kid begged for a shotgun for months. His folks finally relented and bought him a Remington shotgun at Christmas. So the kid has become a "hunter". Goes to a SC state "wildlife preserve", ground hunting with an brand-new 870 and slugs, and kills an 8-pointer, out of the gate. Doesn't know, and is ill-prepared, to field dress...or anything, else. Pure f'ing dumb luck, 1st time out. Kills a trophy. So, he ambles through the woods, finds another hunter. And gives his deer away!!!! No antlers. No back-strap. Nothing. Only the photos. I have done my best to shame him as a "Bambi-killer". It's hunting. Not sport-killing. I think he gets the message. But, next time, I want to go with that lucky f#*ker! Posted by: Capt. You're lucky so far-- 12 inches already in downtown New Haven, with 16 to 18 inches reported elsewhere in the county. 196 Carol T,
I am an Ohio citizen as is my wife. We're currently in the great state of Indiana as resident guests at the leisure of the Dept of Defense's indulgence. I was born in Dayton in 1972, drifted to Alberta, back to Ohio to Georgia, to Texas to Ohio to Texas to Maryland, to South Carolina, to Louisiana to South Carolina, to Indiana, heading back to South Carolina. I would say we are praying to go from South Carolina to Texas, Louisiana, or Alaska and then to Texas, Louisiana, North Dakota, Alaska, Montana, or Alberta....but that'd be confusing and prideful... if you want to hear God laughing yell your wishes and plans at him. I thought I had hallucinated that in my drug-fueled haze until a couple of months later when I saw it sober. Even then I thought it was a hallucination. Good times. Oh and on Kasich....sorry...yeah technically he's still my governor I need to go buy an acre in Texas so my wife can make a Declaration of intent and we can switch our state residency for tax and political purposes.... Kasich is a nice enough fella and better by far than Voinovich and DeWine since DeWine got poisoned by the Cleveland gang... Kasich is a lot more moderate than his rhetoric but Ohio has at least 3 and maybe 5 different GOP flavors. Kasich is falling prey to the Cleveland gang curse. thx, steck. It goes like this:
I'm driving a HP Pavilion dv6. To hit the F-keys, I have to hit the appropriately named "fn" key. For example, to re-fresh the ONOT, i have to hit fn then f5. Not a problem, I can do it in my sleep (and often do). The problem is, when I'm working in Excel, having to hit the fn key really harshes my mellow. I'm sure there's a way to "toggle" this "feature" on and off, but I just can't find it. Your thoughts? thx Posted by: AltonJackson at February 08, 2013 11:33 PM (JMmQ9) 321

well, cthulhu, this is a "Mr. Happy isn't very cooperative" type of thing Posted by: chemjeff at February 08, 2013 11:23 PM (BBWjt) OK, not kidding here....hie thee hence to your doc, and get an overall checkup first. There are a number of *serious* medical conditions that have weird and seemingly explicable symptoms ["I smell garlic when I stand up too fast"] -- and, BTW, Mr. Happy isn't happy. Quite a few of them react BADLY to things that Mr. Happy might appreciate. As in, "keel over dead at inopportune times", badly. "255 Okay, so it is winter. And, like, it snows in the winter. Sometimes the snow blows around in the wind. This is not news. It is winter."
This over-reaction to normal winter weather, thunderstorms, and so on, is being pushed by local tv stations. They carry on like the end of the world is coming. Anyway we got a bunch of snow. I came back to my own house after being at my dad's for a couple days. The guy I hired to plow never came. Plus the end of the driveway has a buttload of that heavy crap dumped on it from the snowplows. I put the jeep into 4 wheel drive low. That sucker went through my driveway like it was nothing. In seven years, I've never had an amount of snow in my driveway that it wouldn't go through. I love the jeep, it's going to be tough when I have to get my next car, because I don't want to buy from a company that took gubmint money. Oh, and anti-SUV environmentalists can eat me. Ahhhh. The storm of '78. i was in jr. high. My ma's girlfriend pulled stakes and was moving to Nashville. We loaded a pull-behind U-haul the very morning the snow started. There was already plenty snow on the ground in Plymouth, Indiana. Wehad skiddedoff the road before 30 miles and somehow managed to extricate ourselves. Kokomo is 60 miles from Plymouth: It took us 4 hours to get there and a hotel room where we stayed two nights. On the third morning we jettisoned the U-haul and headed south. 465 East around Indy was a freaking glacier. Snow was packed 5- inches deep into glazed ice. Travel was at 5-10 mph. We found another vacancy and stayed two more nights. On the fifth morning roads were passable as the temps had raised enough where salt could work on the roads. Tennessee bound! My older brother followed a few days later and picked up the U-haul in Kokomo. The wheels were frozen into the pavement. He used a jack to lift the trailer up and free. I was so glad to see him and our crazy cousin greet me in Nashville! Back home in Indiana I remember digging a snow maze in the yard. We had four feet of snow. I am in MA but most of the reason I can't do things like that is that I have bad neck, which makes my hands hurt and weak and to top it off, four weeks ago I fractured my tailbone! I can hardly sit w/o being in pain. The 24 hour news cycle ruined things. A snow storm is expected in the winter in MA and other states. They have made such a big deal out of this one it had better be worse than 1978. I doubt it will because I was 18 that year and remember it well. There was a big storm a week or so before and all the new snow fell on top of two plus weeks of ice underneath it. It was five or six inches deep of thick hard ice to start with Posted by: CarolT at February 09, 2013 12:17 AM (z4WKX) 429

Night morans. Let me just say this. I am so glad to find a group of people that love Archer and Trailer Park Boys. We are the future. We are second to none. I rose from nothing, poverty to where we couldn't drink the water in the house I grew up in. I love our country. I worked three jobs through college. I now have three beautiful children and God willing we will end up with six. Are we here to just eat, shit and die. Or are we here to do something. To make a difference. To better this country for our children and grandchildren. Fuck prison. Fuck sorrow. Fuck turmoil. We are ALL FUCKING DEAD at the end of the day. The disciples of Jesus Christ went through sorrow more than we could know. Now are we going to stand up, be arrested and join that "animated contest of freedom". Or are we going to slink away and shrivel into the irrelevancy of history. Stand with me. Stand together. And start the battle where it belongs. This July 4th, we should all join in D.C. and lay 30 round magazines at the Washington monument. This is the foundation of our freedom. FUCK THE BUREAUCRATS. God bless all. We've decided as a culture that any combination of people constitutes a "family" and how dare anyone think otherwise. Posted by: Colorado Alex at February 09, 2013 12:46 AM (hpDVh) I don't have a problem with people being a "family" -- I just think that having the government enforce it has become more of a nightmare than orphanages and "fallen women" ever were before. Even 20 years ago, I was running into women who had five children by five different men, and men who struggled to get back on their feet after horrible divorce settlements and got hauled back into court because they'd somehow managed to get two nickels to rub together. OTOH, I knew of a case where an executive managed to bully his ex-wife into refinancing their ex-home repeatedly so that his new home was owned free-and-clear. "Family Court" is government meddling writ large, with ideology straight from the progressive's playbook.....and it's a horror. Posted by: cthulhu at February 09, 2013 12:59 AM (kaalw) 554

Same here brother. Estimator/Project Manager. Family business. Been in business over 70 years now. Much smaller scale than what your talking about, but has provided a very nice living for my family. And we spent a crapload of money about 18 months ago to protect our business and rep. Another estimator left the biz and decided his non-compete didn't apply. He learned wrong.
Posted by: BCochran1981 - Credible Hulk at February 09, 2013 01:08 AM (GEICT) I speek like it's "we", but it's "him". 4o years in the biz. 20 as an owner. Honest. Fair. Trustworthy. We are not looking for a "home-run" everytime. We are "dollar cost averaging". And he has been frugal enough to have a deep reserve, when things are not so good. But, recently, we are finally able to really raise the unit price, and we are re-filling the coffers. Mostly, though, along with a modest profit, for the "long-run", it's about being the best, dependability, honesty, trust, and respect of your peerage. Fuck the "boilerplate in a subcontract. It's about the handshake and an "gentleman's agreement". Posted by: Capt. Backfire at February 09, 2013 01:24 AM (mkb9H) 618

Jake. Let's talk scopes, and shit. and I don't mean a colonoscopy.
I sold my 1-4x24 today to a fellow rifle owner I met in CCW class. Great guy. I bought a 3-12x44. Amazing what the Chinamen make for not much dough. I realize that for my nice rifle I will want to be some nice glass on top some time. I'm just wondering, being a scope neophyte and all, why good glass cost 10x what inexpensive glass cost. It's such a big difference. Posted by: Tobacco Road at February 09, 2013 01:29 AM (4Mv1T) 624

Posted by: The Dude at February 09, 2013 01:47 AM (vJdyz) It's watchable, though. It's a good "turn off brain at end of day" show. The only show I dropped this year so far is Tamako Market; that bird needs to die. Am watching: Minami-ke Tadaima: Good follow-up to the original series about the three Miname sisters. The middle one is particularly funny. Boku wa Tomodachi ga sukunai NEXT: I enjoy how the reason most of the cast doesn't otherwise have friends is because they are so messed up. And yes, I'm rooting for "Meat.: Sasami-san@Ganbaranai: Weird but interestingly so. I also have a weakness for the director's work. Maoyuu Maou Yuusha: I enjoy it for the socio-economic issues and the huge... tracts of land... Mondai-Ji-tachi ga Isekai kara Kuru Sou Desu yo: I like the fact that the three powerful kids know they are powerful and act like it. Nice to see the pendulum swing from the Emo Shinji achetype. Space Bros.: Good solid story, with good characters, and excellent plotting. Shin Sekai Yori: An intereting world they put together... I'm rooting for the rat people led by the Machiavellian rat dude. Robotics;Notes: Nothing quite like a slice of life story involving a high school robotics club that gets embroiled by plans for global government and mass genocide... Psycho-pass: Excellent dystopian future where an all seeing benevolent computer runs everyones lives... and has them executed if their psychological "hues" get too off. When i was researching scopes i saw that they got bashed on the AR forums. I did see some good reviews by a gun instructor and some leos who throw them in the trunk routinely. I frankly can't understand how an illuminated scope, with locking turrets and other such features can be made as cheap as they are. I will run with it till I find a reason to trade up, like for long shots, once i find a place to do that. Posted by: Tobacco Road at February 09, 2013 02:04 AM (4Mv1T) 679

It's been almost 25 years since I read that one or its sequel. It caught my interest because I was fairly active in fandom back then but I only vaguely remember the details. Like the lead character using the pen name Jay Omega. It was OK but it seemed like one of those concepts that a roundtable session at a Thursday after-meeting would do better. We had a pretty good Star Wars parody starring the Looney Toons cast called Star Warners that was largely cooked up that way. Never pitched it, though. Eugene Volokh was a law student back then and was an occasional diner in the aftermeeting crowd. There was one occasion where he was among the first to leave and we came up short on divvying up the bill, with the general belief being that Volokh had skipped out on the bill. Though he may not have realized it. The restaurant had an item on the menu called Chicken Eugene and that became a running joke for some of us thereafter. Posted by: Arbalest at February 09, 2013 02:11 AM (a7GSt) I've given up on sanity returning to California in my lifetime. I was born here, the climate is perfect, there are resources beyond imagining.....and I'm looking to bail. Breaks my heart. Just to provide an illustration of why this is inevitable -- we live in a modest suburban home in Santa Clara, and our property taxes are $150 shy of six grand. Now, if investments yielded 10%, we'd need $60,000 of investments to pay our property taxes after retirement. But they don't. The Fed's ZIRP means that a "risk-free" investment earns only about 2% -- http://www.bloomberg.com/markets/rates-bonds/government-bonds/us/ -- so we'd need $300,000 of investments to just pay property taxes -- we've had $240,000 of our investments sucked away from eating, driving, medicines, and keeping warm. And where the ZIRP looked temporary when the US debt was $10T, it looks permanent when the debt is $16T and rising -- because the interest expense for the Feds' FY 2012 was $359,796,008,919.49 -- roughly 9% of the $3,796B of total government spending. That's with the average interest rate at 2.523% [http://www.treasurydirect.gov/govt/rates/pd/avg/2012/2012_12.htm] -- if interest rates were to go to the 6.642% that existed at 12/31/2000 [http://www.treasurydirect.gov/govt/rates/pd/avg/2001/2001_12.htm], the interest expense would go to $947B, or almost a quarter of all Federal expenditures. So ZIRP isn't ending soon. If you want a property where you can pay the taxes with a $100K savings kitty, you have to look at places where you can get a decent property at $X, where the tax is $Y, and where the earnings on your savings is $Z, where Z > Y. It's 6th-grade math. Posted by: cthulhu at February 09, 2013 02:59 AM (kaalw) Posted by: The Political Hat at February 09, 2013 03:03 AM (Vk2pI) 737

LASFS meets on Thursday evenings. The club house used to be in North Hollywood and moved last year to Sherman Oaks or Van Nuys. (I've never been to the new club house, so I'm not entirely sure of the location.) The meeting usually broke up a bit after nine and a subset of us would pick a restaurant to go to for dinner. Preferably a place that stayed open until at least Midnight or didn't close at all. After a few years we got lazy and just went to Solley's Deli in Sherman Oaks every week.
Part of me really misses having that semblence of a social life but I don't feel like I have much to discuss with those people any more. cthulhu: Few people really like the idea of emigrating to another, less-desirable place. But this is a matter of survival. Too many things are wrong in California ... starting with CalPERS. I expect that the solution will be that the residents will end up voting down every plan the State comes up with, save cutting retirements and benefits. There may be an approach to the federal government for a bailout, but if I was a senator from ANY other state, I'd filibuster every bailout attempt. No need to share the pain that California generated for itself. This leaves a lot of ugliness in CA ... and it is perhaps the first of many plagues to be visited here. I caused none of these, and no one will listen to me ... so they will hear my footsteps ... leaving ... eventually, and not in the far distant future. Posted by: Arbalest at February 09, 2013 03:19 AM (a7GSt) 741

#760 Morning, J.J.! I wondered how the snowstorm was going.

North of here and into New England might be pretty bad. But 1978 here in the city was really quite extraordinary. Posted by: J.J. Sefton at February 09, 2013 06:43 AM (XkWWK) 771

#770 JJ, out here my parents were snowed in for a week with no power. They camped out in front of the wood stove in the family room and shut the rest of the house off.
The REMC linemen had to be brought down their road in an Indiana National Guard halftrack. We were living in Evansville then, so although we only got 8-10 inches of snow, the city couldn't handle it because they rarely got snow. People just didn't know what to do. The drifting on I-64 was so bad that my husband got routed off on his way to the mine, and had to come home (which took him almost all day). The guys who were at the mine were stuck, and finally took a bulldozer and plowed their way to a local gas station, where they broke in to get food and cigarettes. LOL! Good Morning Miss Marple, I have to look out several windows to see how bad it is here. I am sitting at the computer in my kitchen, ready to getinto my work computer. I have to make add some things to payroll. We were supposed to work from home yesterday. I alteranted between this computer, an old Dell laptop that works better with work's computer becuase it is Windows 7 and I don't need to use my work computer do to payroll, it's on the internet, but I have a Mac laptop that is not compatible with the payroll website, because Mac uses Safari as a browser. The screen is a bit bigger here too. I feel about the same, thank you for asking. I thougth because the ampersand showed as I typed it worked. It gets confusing when you are going from one operating system to another. It is 18 degrees here. Most of my windows are covered in ice and I can't see much outside. Wind is very strong. Wanna bet that Bloomie's driveway has been plowed well and thoroughly already? Even his snowplow driver carries an assault weapon. Posted by: Hrothgar at February 09, 2013 07:28 AM (Cnqmv) 781
#780 That's a sucker's bet. I KNOW his driveway has been plowed. He probably had a snowplow dedicated to him, so he can travel wherever he wants.
Next up: plowing only in selected areas because of union grudges. Posted by: Miss Marple at February 09, 2013 07:30 AM (GoIUi) 782
I only got 3-4" in the Philly burbs. It rained most of Friday, and not even much of that. It changed over to snow about 9:00 pm and was still snowing when I went to bed, but it must have ended shortly thereafter.
I stopped in the supermarket after work and the lines were really long at the cashiers. I heard a guy in front of me talking about 8-12". I don't know where the hell he got that. People need some drama in their lives, I guess. It's been years since we had a decent snowstorm around here. *grumble* Posted by: rickl at February 09, 2013 07:32 AM (sdi6R) 783
good morning all. We have about 30 " of snow on the ground in Manchester, CT. I a m looking out on my deck and the birds are eating on top of the snow that has piled up, it's at eye level, the cats are freaking out cause they can't see out the door.

Storm? Just a snowy day in Syracuse, enough to keep the snowblower from rusting. I hate winter, not because any day is bad, but because it never ends.

I looked out the sunporch window, that leads to the street. All the cars are buried up to the top of the hoods. Other cars have more but I'm sure it is from the snow drifts. The snow isn't coming down very hard now but I had the local news on first and they said it's going to continue until at least noon.

794 Hrothgar,
Well in my misguided youth I'd snark "taste" but at the end of the day I think trolls who give anyone but me heat about how much they post need help or FM 2-1. The HQ is a team effort of Ace and the COBs doing the heavy intellectual lifting or in the case of some undermining of western civilization and of us acting as the packing styrofoam peanuts.... now it is true I leave a LOT of peanuts but that is because I am a nut and well "eleventy!" No need to get judgemental with any of we other morons. Posted by: sven10077 at February 09, 2013 08:00 AM (LRFds) 797
795 Hrothgar,
Quite...I am hoping some reporter in Moscow looks at the camera and says "yes scientists say the storm is because of global warming....fucking idiots comrade six feet of fucking snow in 2 days they can kiss my curvy Russian ass." No need to get judgmental with any of we other morons.
Posted by: sven10077 at February 09, 2013 08:00 AM (LRFds) Actually, I would like to be able to thin the comments section for only a very few of the truly trollish ones. Most of the commenters here have something intelligent, funny, or bizarre to say, but a few of them really clog up the thread with pure stupidity, and it would nice to flag them so their comments don't show (at least on my browser). I realize that I might miss something, but I find I can't read anywhere as much as I would like to so... Posted by: Hrothgar at February 09, 2013 08:09 AM (Cnqmv) 800

cthulhu: Spend some time researching the Nebraska-Texas corridor. If you can stand the cold, you might find what you want there. Farther north and west have merit, but they are colder. South of the Ohio River has merit, but I've seen the Deep South .... I don't have enough family there. Posted by: Arbalest at February 09, 2013 03:54 AM (a7GSt) There's some family history involved. I'll leave it to you, dear Morons, to elucidate why he seemed to know
there would be no profit in pinning his villainy on (currently pro-government) lefties. --------------- Pinning this on the leftists in this country would make it look just like any other politically-motivated bank bombing. The left wing media would downplay it, whitewashing the leftist bit, and right-thinking people would just think it was some Occupy loon. Everyone forgets about it the next day. Pin it on a militia and it stirs up more gun-grabbing, anti-conservative talk. It's by design that the terrorists are trying to neutralize the right. We're the only ones who have their number pegged.
