Fine. His arguments are entirely specious. They assume that *this time* the House Republicans really will capitalize on that "PR win." Pinkey swear.

When the first premise of your syllogism is invalid, the entire syllogism is invalid.

I don't think anyone here would have had a problem with Boehner's "strategy" (to give it so lofty a title) if we'd ever seen any evidence that he would actually follow through.

Instead, every time something similar has come up, he's said, "Ah, we'll make *this* brilliant maneuver that cedes a little bit of ground, but sets the ground for victory!" and then when the "time for victory" comes up, he says, "Ah, we'll make *this* brilliant maneuver that cedes a little bit of ground, but sets the ground for victory!"

At some point, you have to stop setting the ground for victory, and get around to being victorious.

In short- I don't care what words Boehner uses, and I don't care about Ed Morrissey ball-washing him, one way or the other. What I care about is Boehner's actions.

So far, those have been incredibly disappointing.

The AMT fix alone will stabilize what small businesses remain afloat's ability to manage their cash flow more efficiently....the donk hostage taking of AMT fixes is over....

that said the M$M will NEVER allow the narrative to be that the mules lack a counter offer or are to blame...so unless Boehner got a balls transplant and the House is gonna use every means they can to argue with their districts on this issue while having party operatives in purple and even blue areas making the same case it is a tactical not strategic advantage....

The gist of Morrissey's argument is that he was setting the stage by giving ground strategically so as to prep the field for what looks like a bad situation for Obama. Your argument boils down to "he gave ground, and hasn't reclaimed it yet". I imagine Boehner would agree, because if the story is accurate, that's the strategy. We won't know if it worked until we see his approach and the results. But hey, why wait when invective is so much more satisfying.

Things can change. Boehner is no longer doing the one-on-one negotiations with O. He's demanded a return to regular order, and making it stick. I don't much care whether it was a grand strategy or a revelation that what he was doing was going to cost him his speakership, as long as he stands up and does what needs to be done.

67 47 Pep,

Again let's go ahead and act as though Ed is executing insight that has not been discussed ad infinitum here for the last three months....

Until Boehner accepts the reality of the pitched and bought media battlefield he will at best make tactical gains in a strategic game....

Boehner is actually a very cunning operator contrary to theatrics here in a difficult position but Poppin' Fresh's blowjob does nothing to make the case to the "mainstream GOP' that they need to get their heads out of their asses and play hard with the press.

Boehner is in a bad position and Ed's cheerleading is not making the point this is a rigged game.

I am angry at Tepid because I KNOW that the mainstream right reads it and in trying to defend RiNOism Ed is in fact giving the party permission to focus efforts on grabbing lockstep left rather than whipping wayward party members and staying pat or moving right.

Do go on

Poppin' Fresh takes an opportunity to acknowledge the wild bias while making the point about tactical gain and refuses to use it....

coming from Poppin' Fresh's "credibility" the indictment would sting moderate GOPers because they KNOW he is one of them but Ed refuses to spend his capital on it...

moreso the pity eh?

108 We just want to see some positive result

----

You can find some positive result in the cliff negotiations. The Bush tax rates got extended indefinitely for 90% of the people. The estate tax and gift tax exemptions remained in place at $5MM (significantly higher than a few years ago), and there was a permanent fix to the AMT.

Now you could find some negatives. Taxes went up for everyone. Taxes went up too much for high earners especially when you add in Obamacare taxes. GOP got nothing in return for raising taxes.

But on the balance, since the Country basically voted for tax increases by electing Obama to a 2nd term, since the GOP had little leverage in that taxes were going up anyway. Since Obama wanted much more in the way of tax increases, I think it was a favorable result. Yes, I would have liked much more, but what I want the Country rejected by voting for Obama.

Give Boehner credit or don't. He offered more, but I will look at it as positve result given the environment. That doesn't mean I think it was the best result. I was very partial to the LIB crowd.

159 Seems to me these are our options:

1. LIB. Okay, so we just sit back and watch and let the whole thing burn down. Except there is a chance it might not burn at all, the economy and the country might just stagger along with no/low growth for quite some time (see: Japan). Then, whenever the next economic bubble comes about (dot-com, real estate, etc.), whomever happens to be in charge at the time will get the credit, deservedly or not.

2. Support current Republicans in their efforts, however tepid, to stand in the way of creeping galloping socialism. But that makes one a sellout and an implicit endorser of the apparent current Republican strategy of "surrender now, fight later (maybe)".

3. Don't focus on politics, work to change the real problem - the left-leaning culture that sneers at any conservative idea.

I'd prefer to work on #3 myself.

Results matter. If Boehner gives up his position, then it doesn't matter how 'smart' their maneuvering was.

Results are what counts. I have little faith that Boehner will give us results. He has already had 2 years and has what results to show for? More spending and now more taxes.

Posted by: blindside at February 08, 2013 12:03 PM (x7g7t)

161 We won't know if it worked until we see his approach and the results. But hey, why wait when invective is so much more satisfying.
Posted by: pep at February 08, 2013 11:30 AM (YXmuI)

Please present for me the following:

A. An actual budget being presented to Congress.

B. Any actual cuts in spending, not cuts in the rate of growth, actual cuts i.e. less dollars being spent.

C. A debt ceiling restriction.

Unless and until I see those, I will not believe that Boehner and the GOP are winning anything at all.

I'm sorry, but you are demanding faith in the actions of Boehner, et al, that is completely, totally and utterly unwarranted by the facts. The burden of proof is on you to come up with anything other than words to support a contention that there is any game being played by Boehner, et al, let alone a long game. I have yet to see any such evidence adduced by any person advocating the acceptance of such position.

Beck has a fund set up at Mercury One for Kyle's widow and children. Chris donated the proceeds from his best-selling book to help veterans, so the wife and children don't have a lot. So far, they've raised over $300,000 (which Jesse Ventura wants to get his evil mitts on).

Look, I'll grant- willingly- that Boehner did about as well as could be expected (in light of TFG's reelection) on the tax deal. I'm a little pissed he didn't use the chance to get spending cuts, too- and *now* he's looking for some way around the Sequester.

So, higher taxes on everyone, for no spending cuts. Again.

I'm sorry, that's getting more than a little old.

If this were the first time, or even just the second, I might be more willing to say, "Alright, here we go." Instead, this has been status quo since at least 2011.

So- wake me when Boehner has actually done something useful- and, yes, I mean more than once. Preferably several times in a row.

Then Boehner needs to step down as Speaker.

If Beohner can't carry the message, then put someone who can in the position to carry the Message. As the most visible Republican (on the national stage), that is one of the most important (certainly in the top 3) jobs he has.

If we had the Senate, he might be able to pass that duty off to the Senate Majority leader (probably not, but maybe). But we don't.

If we had the Presidency, he could (and should) hand that duty to the President. But we don't.

If he can't handle it, he needs to step down and let someone who can hold the position.

But Boehner isn't in this for you and me. He's not even in it for Republicans. He's in it for him. I don't blame him for that. I blame him for representing himself as being for you and me, and then selling us out continually.

Usually hunters are more mindful of their environment. These guys are lucky they got a second chance they need to learn something and be way more mindful.

Similar topic, had a bunch of kids come into our deer camp in one of the Cali high deserts looking for an old quartz mine. No map, 1/4 tank of fuel and no water, and no idea where they were headed. As it was they were lucky, deer season made it so you couldn't swing a dead cat around without hitting a hunting camp. A week later and they would have been a missing persons report.

The problem is that none of them are the Speaker of the House. None of them.

Few enough people even know who the Speaker of the House is. Fewer know Eric Cantor, or Jeb Henserling, or any other Representative. When the Speaker... um... speaks... the Media doesn't have a whole lot of choice when it comes to reporting it. Certainly they can spin and twist his words, and he doesn't have the Bully Pulpit that the President does, but he's got a pretty big microphone. The same simply is not true of any other Representative.

Thus, when leading the Opposition Party, one of the Speaker's jobs is to be the Face of the Party. That means being the attack dog, when necessary.

308 287 AlexTheChick,

There's more to "the Texas way" than raw emotion, but I fear the Texas model won't work nationally and if amnesty passes won't work in Texas anymore either.

I tried to be agnostic in my postings but was a Perry backer, albeit one who expressed concerns America would not elect another "Texas cowboy" with the Bush hate still being whipped.

There's more to what Perry was trying to express than just "emotion" but the GOP needs to make up its mind internally on whether or not to try the texas model nationally.

I think the LEGAL Immigration rate should be directly tied to the Unemployment rate.

Anything above 8%? We shut the dam door.... 7%? we let in very few.... 5% which is considered full employment? ( and use the OLD method for this)... go back to the 1 MILLION folks we let in a year.

323 302 MadDog,

The American businessman and citizen is schizoid on Immigration issues. Americans do not like illegal immigration but they will NOT hold the democrats responsible for their willful failures on illegal immigration. Business likes the labor cheapening impact, but blanches at tax cost. If we naturalize 44 million guys names Juan I want INS abolished period along with minimum wage.

331 BurtTC - I did find it surprising that the other nominees were able to portray Perry as soft on immigration. I would have thought that being the only one from a border state, he would have had some credibility.Perry would have been better off just saying it was a very popular policy in Texas and we must bedoing something right since our economy was growing somuch.

Regardless, Texas has a very strong GOP. But people running for Texas office do no run on a border fence, e-verify, or other things that seem to be popular with national base conservatives. There is a bit of a tension.

You can make of it what you will.

334 I would support another Perry run in 2016, the man was not ready because of his back surgery the month before he announced.
I have had two neck surgeries, one in 2000 and one in 2004. The longer you are out under anesthesia the longer it takes to recover. The second surgery I was out for over four hours. I didn't go back to work until February. I had to work from home and go to the office a two days a week to do things I couldn't do from home.

I have yet to start working today. Maybe in a little while. I have an entire bag of things to do for work today.

Rush is right, SCOAMT did go the Las Vegas on 9/11/2012.

337 Romeo13, tie it to the black unemployment rate. If the Dims want to play identity politics, give'em both barrels. No immigration reform until black unemployment is 5%. Tim Scott needs to be our point man on this, filibuster if necessary.

Posted by: Jean at February 08, 2013 12:50 PM (qjFNd)

338 With respect to emotion v. reason. I think that is one of the problems with the GOP. I'm all for governing on emotion. And I wish that is how you got elected. But for better or worse people vote on emotion. Its why cultulral issues move voters over economic ones. So I do think that GOP needs to be better at manipulating voter emotion. It doesnt' appeal to most of us, but we are all pretty reasonable voters.

Yep, I think that's it in a nutshell: Perry was unable to articulate his strengths, and let, especially Bachmann and Santorum to portray him as something he wasn't. Which is his fault entirely.

Posted by: Jean at February 08, 2013 12:53 PM (qjFNd)

341 Sven - I think you would agree. What the base wants nationally with respect to immigration ins't necessarily what the Texas GOP wants. There are obvious reasons. So I think Perry was illequipped to handle the issue. He probably thought what I thought. How could someone from Minn and Mass trump him on this issue.

350 Vermont Teddy Bears. Who the hell would want one of those monstrosities in their house? It practically needs its own room. And it's not like the recipient can discard it after a week or two. You'd have to break up with the person who gave it to you.

Other problems here...
Where do they get those women in the commercials? From the Hoodie-Footie commercials? Do these women exist outside of Hugh Hefner's world? They're practically retarded.
