38 From the comments of that NYTimes tax piece:

Let me set one thing straight that the author did not mention. Indeed, it wasn't mentioned in any article on the subject since the "holiday" on SS tax rate on individuals. When they gave the people the 2% reduction, they raised the employer contribution portion by 2%. In other words, the revenues received by the SS "trust fund" did not change at all. There was no "reduced revenue" as a result of the 2% withholding holiday, they just took the money from the employer instead of the employee. No one mentions this. NO ONE. Do you think that this increased cost to the employer MIGHT have been another reason for employers to not want to hire people for the past two years???? Duh. Yeah, they've been so worried about the unemployment rate... NOT. Since I'm no longer processing payroll, did the elimination of the "holiday" also reduce the employer's contribution back to pre-"holiday" levels? Or are they making MORE revenue off of people making less than 113k/year now by continuing to penalize employers for having employees?

48 - "Obamacare Fail: CBO Predicts Drop In Health Coverage"

Au contraire. That's not a "fail." That's an intended feature of the law. Democrats are not dumb. Crazy, yes. Corrupt, of course. Ruthless, no doubt. But not dumb. Far from it.

Obamacare is a tax and spend and regulation plan with a giant, underlying and ulterior purpose: shrink the middle class and reduce health insurance benefits.

Within the next decade or so the Democrats will use the post-Obamacare images of uninsured and underinsured seniors and uninsured and underinsured twentysomethings as the platform for their final push for a fully-nationalized system.

- "Breaking The Blue Model Monopoly On Education"

That would require for Republicans the sort of party-based political hegemony that hasn't been seen in this country since the Carter reign, when Democrats nearly had absolute power at the federal and state levels of government. For the simple reason that not a single major Democrat politico anywhere would vote or sign off on such items as comprehensive vouchers, merit-based compensation for teachers and administrators, etc.

Elections and politicians determine laws and policies, not editorials and certainly not coffee klatches or sewing circles.

49 (AP) Christopher Dorner sees himself as a crusader, a 6-foot, 270-pound whistleblower who
confronted racism early in life and believes he suffered in his career
and personal life for challenging injustices from bigotry to dishonesty.

In the document, Dorner rails against the hypocrisy of black police
commanders who crack down on their white subordinates and catalogues his
experiences with racism and injustice, beginning with a schoolyard
fight at his Christian elementary school and ending with the
disciplinary process that led to his dismissal from the LAPD in 2008.

Dorner recalls that he beat up a fellow student who called him a
racial slur on the playground while in the first grade. The principal
punished the student, but also chastised Dorner for not turning the
other cheek, "as Jesus did."

See it's not his fault. It's whitey and Christianity's fault. I'm sure the MFM is printing up his NRA membership right now

61 LEESBURG, Virginia (Reuters) - Facing government spending
cuts that could delay air travelers, pare education programs for the
poor and weaken military readiness, Democrats in the U.S. Congress this
week sought to shift the deficit-reduction burden to the rich.

House Democrats
have proposed substituting the $85 billion "meat-ax" approach to
deficit reduction with a mix of spending cuts and tax hikes, although
they acknowledge it is not clear if that will be embraced by President Barack Obama.

An attorney representing two women who were delivering newspapers when they were shot by police during a massive manhunt for an ex-LAPD officer called the incident "unacceptable," saying his clients looked nothing like the suspect.

Emma Hernandez, 71, was delivering the Los Angeles Times with her daughter, Margie Carranza, 47, in the 19500 block of Redbeam Avenue in Torrance on Thursday morning when Los Angeles police detectives apparently mistook their pickup for that of Christopher Dorner, the 33-year-old fugitive suspected of killing three people and injuring two others.

"The problem with the situation is it looked like the police had the goal of administering street justice and in so doing, didn't take the time to notice that these two older, small Latina women don't look like a large black man," Jonas said.

"Tragically, we believe this is a case of mistaken identity," LAPD Chief Charlie Beck told reporters earlier Thursday about the shooting.

A Tennessee born-again Christian has quit his job after receiving a wage slip marked "666" despite previously warning his employers of a serious aversion to the Number of the Beast.

Walter Slonopas, 52, toiled as a maintenance worker at Contech Casting in Clarksville until bosses issued him a Form W-2 bearing the satanic numerals. Despite assurances by Bob LaCourciere of Contech owner Revstone that three digits on the forms merely "refer to the order in which they were mailed out", Slonopas sees the dark hand of Satan at work.

According to the New York Daily News, Slonopas's first day on the job back in April 2011 saw him allocated the clock-in number 666. Once he'd made clear his "concerns", he was given a less mephistophelean ID code.

But fours months later a time-clock overhaul once again branded him as foretold in the Book of Revelation. He duly walked out, returning a few days later when Contech apologised and gave him yet another clock-in number.

This time, though, Slonopas is gone for good, convinced the triple occurrence of the numerical triplet of doom is beyond coincidence. "God is worth more than money," he declared.

157 Nobel Prize-winning economist James Buchanan of George Mason University died last month. He pioneered the “public choice” school of analysis:

Public choice theory demystified politics by puncturing the grand illusion that nourishes government growth. It is the fiction that elected politicians and government administrators are more nobly motivated, unselfish and disinterested than are persons acting in the private sector.

Buchanan extended the idea of the profit motive to the behavior of politicians and bureaucrats, two groups seeking to maximize power the way many people in the private sector maximize monetary profits. Public-sector actors often do this by transactions with rent-seekers — private factions trying to maximize their welfare by getting government to give them benefits, such as appropriations, tax preferences and other subsidies.

Pretty much the leading conservative argument in the debate over The Role of Government. R.I.P.

165 Allen,
Two things from the last thread (as I read through it).
1) Coaches being dumbshits and really having no qualifications to teach is a symptom of the current system. A big part of it is, "We can't pay the football coach more than dear old Fran who's been here 30 years!" by the parents. So the schools "hide" half of their salary by claiming they are "teachers." Eliminating extra-curricular activities would create far more problems than it would solve (bullying by jocks). Thought I knew you better than to consider an idea that would further feminize the American male.
2) Given that Dallas wiped out a lot of the local Republicans and replaced them with Dems a few years back, I was damned surprised they passed the towing law.

Lifehacker.com: Turn Fish Bones into Salt and Boost Your Food’s Flavor

Fish is great for you, but once you're finished eating, there's no reason to throw out the bones: they're great for a lot of things. In this case, keep the fish bones from your last meal and use them to make a delicious savory salt that'll add umami flavor to any dish you sprinkle it over.

In the military, it's called The Death Blossom. They've been ambushed and now they're firing wildly in a 360 degree loop until they find their bearings.

Not that I'd ever expect the tyrants to consider this, but if one trained man can cause such havoc, what do they expect to happen when hundreds or even thousands of men with even more training decide they've had enough of this encroaching tide of totalitarian sewage?

204 RoyalOil - I didn't want to turn it into a long discussion, so I left a lot out. But I generally think that school should be for, um, school. Right now (at least in Texas) public schools tend to be jock factories- especially if you're a 1st or 2nd string player on the Varsity team, you can be nigh-assured of passing grades.

Similarly, "Coach" is much more concerned with his game-plan for Friday night than he is with teaching about the rise of Workers Unions in the 19th Century, or the concept of economic moral hazard.

And, no, I don't think "Coach" should make more money than that Math Teacher- the math teacher is teaching something schools are supposed to teach, the Coach is coaching students in how to play a game.

Moreover, I was talking all extracurriculars (which I specified): art, band, choir, theater, etc. Not just sports.

Finally, I was only talking about them as actual courses. I would have no problem at all having Football, or Baseball, or Marching Band, or whatever moving to the same "Club" status as Chess Club or Debate Club- both of which also have competitions available, but students are required to spend only their free-time on them.

It didn't take long to figure out that the ranking system is based on complete bullshit. I wasn't thrilled to find out that the youngest was allowed to retake tests in elementary (as were all students) and kept telling him "they won't let you do that in middle school, you're going to have to up your game". Boy was I wrong. They sure as hell let him retake tests in middle school.

No fucking wonder they get great ratings and I have the hurculean task of instilling accountability, action/consequence, hard work, retention, and a whole host of other life skills. It's no fucking wonder that the current generation of young adults have problems with those very things.

Yeah, I get it. And, in the current environment, I don't completely disagree.

Maybe it's because I wasn't an athletic kid (though I was both in Band and in Theater, so I understand the value of the extracurricular courses), but nothing makes me more mad than "Coach" being in a classroom wasting the time of the kids who actually want to learn.

It's even worse (to me) because he probably "teaches" History- and, since he doesn't actually teach it, kids come out a) not knowing anything about it and b) having decided "it's boring" so they don't set out to learn on their own.

I'm hardly a "trained" history teacher, but I don't understand why teachers of history (which aren't the same thing) don't put forth a little more effort.

My one History Teacher who was not also "Coach" was the most desired History teacher- because he made things interesting. He showed us Name of the Rose in class (fast-forwarding through a certain scene). He showed us the hara-kiri (or was it sepuku? I always get them confused) scene from Shogun.

Same here. I always provide context and how things affected the world at large (usually to this very day) or try to put it in a little story arc at very least. The wife has actually gotten interested in history now that it's not just some listed of names and dates to her.

I remember that with Jill St John and Elke Sommers. Tony's character Hymie was such a hapless putz (really bad acting as far as conveying disgusted outrage) and Boyd's character was such a prick who looked like a hilarious dumbass when Sinatra won the award that he thought he was a cinch for.

I always liked the list of names and dates format because, well, I'm a guy and that's how we are. It was always a starting point for me to research the story behind it.

A long time ago, a friend of mine was bitching about how boring history was and asked rhetorically "why should I need to know anything about a battle that happened on the other side of the world a thousand years ago?" Me being me, I didn't grasp the rhetorical nature of the question and proceeded to say "Let's take the battle of Manzikert for example..." and then explained why. She was astounded and then began asking other questions related to the subject. I told her that she didn't seem all that bored with history to me.

It just amazes me that education majors are, by and large, unable to use different methods to make the subject material interesting to students who learn differently.

275 At least on the football team, he has a chance to learn some skills

that will help him later in life instead of being indoctrinated in

communist bullshit.

But you couldn't possibly sign him up
for a football club after school to learn those "skills" (like the
parents who want their children to learn music or math must), because if
the government doesn't provide it for him, it doesn't exist.
===========
That's not true and you know it. 1) I learned both music and math at school and 2) It's not wanting the government to take care of everything it's: Quit forcing me to pay property tax for the 9 to 1 ratio of bullshit I don't want and we might get a discussion going as to what the government schools ought to be spending money on.

Until then, at least there's one arena I can get the government to pay for that I support.

The cold, hard truth is: The experiment with modern public schools in America is a failure.
Some ideas I think we should consider:
1) Eliminating mandatory attendance.
2) Testing for high school entrance or vocational school.
3) Tax assessments for each student to the parents to fund the schools
4) Banning teacher unions
5) At-will employment for all school employees
6) Elimination of districts and other boundaries
7) Aptitude segregation instead of age segregation

Part of the problem is the marxist cocksuckers in wacademia, both in education and history, have made the narrative so fucking boring that it's difficult to get anybody interested in it. The problem is multifaceted and partially deliberate; but it also has to do with most of them being boring shitheads with poor vocabularies who are incapable of writing anything interesting. Well written history makes the subject come alive and is very much a function of literary skills.

There's a line I want to highlight from that story:

Now consider this -- there arenowtwo innocent people who were not in any way involved, nor were they driving his vehicle, nor were they of the same gender as the alleged perpetrator, that were shot by trigger-happy cops who are apparently shooting at anything that moves and vaguely reminds them of the person they are seeking.

Now consider what happens if they actually try to come take guns, and just a few dozendecide they're not going to comply in a given area. Multiply the number of innocent civilians shot by hundreds and consider how many more so-called "vigilantes" will be created
by those very jackasses-in-blue shooting people without cause -- and
getting away with it withoutthemselves being arrested, indicted, tried
and imprisoned.

He's absolutely right.

Horwitz always makes history fascinating. Great book, and very, very relevant right now.
