6 CA drops Algebra as a required course in the 8th grade as part of the “Common Core Standards” being adopted and because 80% of the blacks and Hispanics fail it. It seems the liberals are worried that they will not be prepared for college. When I went to High School there were three education tracks. Those were college prep, general, and business. That was common sense and it came at a time when not everyone was expected to go to college. We need to get back to that. BTW, the general degree only required two years of math.

19 Follow-up on that nutcase woman with the gun yesterday. She actually had just bought that gun.

But how Boland, 28, legally bought a handgun, as police said, and used it to try to shoot Ashley Hall school officials this week remained unknown Thursday. She squeezed the trigger, police said, but the gun didn’t fire.

Her history of mental illness would not have raised flags during a background check when she bought the gun days before Monday’s incident. That’s because, a federal official said, she was never convicted of a felony.

No she wasn’t convicted because she had been adjudicated to be insane! How was that not on her record when they checked? And these incompetent assholes want more laws?

35 Morning, ‘rons and ‘ronettes. Everyone around my office is acting like the proverbial chicken, so between them and the storm, I don’t know how much time I’ll have to hang out here today. With that, here’s a quick story told by Lex Neal, a Warner Brothers writer who also worked on a few Harold Lloyd and Buster Keaton pictures:

It seems that Neal had just been hired by Warners’. As he drove on to the lot, he noticed a group of nice little garages, so he picked one for himself. When he came to get his car that night, he saw that someone had plastered a sign on the windshield:

“Keep your damn car out of this garage – it belongs to me!” And, as Lex tells the story, it was signed by one of the biggest directors of the day. “OK,” the writer thought. “If it’s his garage, it’s his garage.”

When the director drove on to the lot the next morning, he found the garage empty except for the note. On the back, Neal had written: “Sorry. Saw your last picture the other night and didn’t think you were with the studio any more!”

Hope you all have a wonderful day. For any of you fellow NE Morons, stay safe and warm. I’ll see you all on Monday.

36 Vic, I'll say this; take the Tardisil comment away and Michele Bachmann is one of the toughest, sharpest, most committed conservatives we have. On every issue she's a solid lawmaker and a decent person. That's just my opinion. Is there someone as good as she is in Minnesota? I don't know. But it's time that we support our own no matter what. The Dems do it no matter what criminal behavior their candidates are involved in.

51 I want to point out something about the Benghazi hearings, which I put on a couple of threads yesterday but I think people might have missed.

Pannetta said he and Dempsey met with the president at 5PM, leaving the impression they called him about the situation and went over to the White House.

That 5PM meeting was already scheduled. It was on the president's schedule for that day and was published the day before. So Pannetta didn't call for a special meeting.

I got to thinking about this. Pannetta didn't call Obama, nor did he schedule a special meeting. He and Dempsey just showed up when they were on the schedule. Then after they told Obama about the Benghazi situation, he never spoke to them or called them or anything. Why was that? And why did no one get sent to help?

What if Pannetta and Clinton really were the ones who put the bin Laden raid into motion, because Obama was dragging his feet? And what if Obama got so mad that he ordered them to not move any troops or planes ever again without his approval? (This explains why they both are leaving, as well.) And what if the only way Pannetta and Dempsey could see him was to show up for the meeting and then tell him about the situation, hoping face to face contact would convince him to do something? But it didn't, because he was going to "show them who's in charge" or some other BS.

OR, this was the fake kidnapping which only Obama and Hillary knew about and Pannetta was kept out of the loop.

No one is asking the right questions about that meeting.

It's even simpler than that, nobody really gives a shit.

Do you realize how easy it would be to have Clinton and this administration reeling?

There was a communique from the Ambassador saying it was not safe and they needed re-enforcements sent directly to the Secretary.

So they knew.

A) That the filmmaker inciting a "spontaneous" riot story was bullshit.
B) They knew that the ambassador was vulnerable.
C) Everyone up the chain knew this was the case for weeks and did nothing
D) A decision was made all the way up the chain that the Ambassador would left to die.

We have all of the documents that prove this directly and tangentially and our "leaders" cannot make this case rhetorically or demagogically.

85 Back when I was in high school, only about 25% of my large, suburban high school went to college. You went to college if you were going to be a doctor, lawyer, engineer, or teacher.

Everyone else went to trade schools (beauty school, for example), apprenticed to the trades, or just went to work at one of the auto plants. A couple of kids I knew went into farming with their fathers. And because Viet Nam was ramping up, some got drafted.

By the time my daughter graduated from her high school (next district south of the one I went to) , almost 80% went to college. Of course, many only lasted for 1-2 semesters, but that money got into the university treasuries.

At best it means our leadership is every bit the malignant bastards Obama is and are praying to get power back to play the games directly in reverse, unlikely *but* the worst case scenario. The best case scenario, such as it is, is that the bastards on our side are so inept or cowardly they cannot do their duty and forgive me if that does not fill me with confidence in the long term stability of the nation. The medium case scenario which is similar to your offering is shrug another day at the office* and that is even more chilling.

When it comes to legislators (R, D, S, I), I believe that they have all become flag officers in the Free Stuff Army. They do it in bespoke suits, are articulate and clean, and have college degrees (some from prestigious places), but they are all riding in the dining on that good old government gravy train. Look at the salary, perks, and power, to say nothing of the custom legislation they create that exempts them from any onerous aspect of the "law".
Washington, Franklin, et al expected to go home and do real work to make a living nd provide for their families. Our current crop of legislators (with very few exceptions) expect to stay in DC for the rest of their lives and sell their souls for a living. Even sadder, most of them are so stupid, they couldn't cut it anywhere else (much like actors).

120 Fox breaking out the sob stories about TX vet inability to prove
citizenship to renew drivers license. Hey Fox, this isn’t just a TX
requirement. Soon everyone will have this because it was part of the
“findings” from the 911 commission.

1) He's not a "TX vet." He's a MO vet, who now happens to live in Texas.
2) I had to prove my citizenship when I got my DL (actually, when I got my learner's permit) at 15, which, without getting into specific numbers, was way before 9/11/01.
3) Once you have a TXDL, you only have to reprove (is that even a word?) your citizenship if your DL has been expired for quite a bit of time (I'm thinking it's over 2 years).
4) You do not have to be a US Citizen to serve in the US Military. I know this, because my wife's Ex was not a citizen when he joined the Air Force.
5) Presenting your "Social Security Number" (note that the story doesn't say "card") is worth precisely one weasel fart. Maybe less after taxes.

As a side note, if you haven't yet read the City Journal article on CalPERS that Maet linked in last night's ONT, I will say this --

It is tragic, because the gentlemen in question had potential and likely would have risen far on their own merits anyway but middlemen in the sausage machine of government and the military were terrified of pissing off the Race Gods at the political top of their power pyramids.

The minute these individuals pushed and coddled past the point of probity and competence face setbacks they are taught to default back to weaponized racial rage and some will use lethal force as a rebuttal.

I don't see a way to deprogram this racism since the left is not being punished for their antics either.

I'm not carrying any water for Dempsey but....

DoD can't just dive in wherever it wants. The way it works is that State has to request assistance. They each have liaison officers embedded in the others agency to facilitate this. I'm sure you can figure out why. DoD gets word that bad shit is happening, they launch and level the place with an AC-130....only to find out all the State guys were in the building they just leveled. I mean, it really HAS to be a State call.

Having said that, there is absolutely NO excuse, NONE, for not having a Marine FAST platoon on a very short leash and air cover spooling up on the tarmac waiting for a GO signal once State asked. Also, a little prodding by DoD would have helped as in, "We're ready to launch. Now. You want us to go, right? Right? RIGHT?!?!?"

It's one of the reasons I a) don't think Coaches should be allowed (forget "required") to instruct anything but the sport(s) they coach and b) would not mind (at least, not too much) an end to most (if not all) extra-curricular activities as being available during school hours (end Sports for credit- also band, choir, theater, etc.)

133 The trouble with "tracked learning" programs (Business, General, College-Prep) was that certain administrators gained more power than a WWII draft board. Teachers' kids got college-tracked, that became the high-status position, and every parent wanted it. I was tracked "Special Talent" (gawd, they were in the terminology business back then too), and therefore was not allowed into the metal or auto shops. It was a workable concept, but like all government-conferred power, was liable to abuse. Social engineering.

I was lucky in several ways. The family business had taught me mechanickin' and a trade, despite my objections. And rock'n'roll was very good to me. When I dropped Algebra III and calculus for music theory, I was public enemy #1 for a while, but I worked my way through college with the band and the backhoe.

The typical Special Talent Student got into State (they didn't tell us, but it was open admission back then), discovered High Street, and staggered home to sell insurance. And they have to go to Mr Goodwrench for wiper blades.

Yeah, but I don't live in CA, I live in TX (this is me *not* gloating). We figure if you can afford the car, you can afford a DL ($25 every 6 years) and state minimum coverage.

I call BS on this, OP. A scrap car is worth around $200 without salvaging anything from it like the catalytic converter, tranny, tires etc. That's worth more than a towing charge.

170 Move over President Obama. Conservatives are not talking so much about the president’s address at Thursday’s National Prayer Breakfast, but rather remarks from Dr. Benjamin Carson, a black pediatric neurosurgeon with Johns Hopkins Hospital who took over the stage for 25 riveting minutes.

Mr. Carson spoke of his disdain for political correctness, calling it a “dangerous” and “horrible thing” that has led to such ridiculous fears as wishing people Merry Christmas, according to The Blaze.

He also talked about the moral decay of American, and cautioned of a Rome-like fate, and — in front of Mr. Obama, who sat just feet from the podium — confronted the issue of America’s debt and current fiscal policy.

“Our deficit is a big problem,” Mr. Carson said, according to The Blaze. “Think about it — and our national debt — $16 and a half trillion dollars.” And here’s one of his most daring lines, as reported by The Blaze: “What about our taxation system — so complex there is no one that can possibly comply with every jot and tittle. When I pick up my Bible, you know what I see? I see the fairest individual in the universe — God — and he’s given us a system. It’s called tithe.”

One other thing that effects those prices is car age. If you have a relatively new car that was completely trashed in a wreck it will not bring as much.

The metal is thinner and there is a lot more plastic on them. All that reduces the weight.

Oh, I admit you have to know when even to apply the sympathy meter. I never pull it out for my son or daughter. Part of getting it to last forever is not misusing it.

Like that time my son was horsing around and hit his head on my wife's hope chest. If I'd pulled out my sympathy meter, I might have run over to him and hugged him and said, "there, there, it's okay." But I knew better.

Nope. I went over and checked the hope chest for damage.

210 Hey guys,
I don't know if I posted this I think i posted about the M1A, but the rest is new).

Just got back from 6 months in Chi-com land. I never thought I'd get here. Caught the last train out of GZ (Guangzhou) before Chinese New Year holiday (the whole country shuts down) to LA. A 2 hour layover turned into 4 and then onto Houston. We flew around Houston for a spell but were unable to land due to heavy fog so they dropped me in Austin. A layover and another flight to Dallas (no direct flights to Hoston at that time) then onto Houston. 40 hours later after leaving for the airport in GZ here I am> Gotta love air travel these days!

My M1A scout rifle (7.62 x 51 mm) with 20 round magazine and 5 extra new, steel magazines arrived. I picked them up today.

It was a used police trade in. Metal and bore is in Very good plus condition , so that's something positive. The black synthetic stock needs some more black spray paint (no problemo). It is missing the front sling swivel and stock ferrule. I don't think the synthetic stocks even came with a stock ferrule but I know where to procure both.

The interesting thing is the magazine that came with the rifle. The bottom is decoratively edged in black electrical tape, and some cop wrote "Fman" on the bottom of the magazine.

Thank you officer "Fman" where ever you may be!

On a related note, the floor is literally strewn with firearms and military stuff that arrived in my absence.

A Serbian chopped AK pistol with a 75 round drum (my wife found the drum and that combo is her favorite, I don't know how I am going to get it away from her. She calls it HER "little baby AK") Sheesh! Do your wives adopt (purloin) your guns too?

Also laying around were

DOU 1945 marked K-98 mauser- 8 mm

Chinese SKS with spike bayonet- 7.62 x 39 mm-10 ROUND MAGAZINE

2 -Chinese SKS's with blade bayonets that spent time in Nam and Albania (7.62 x 39 mm)- 10 round magazines

Nazi Afrika Corps hat to wear while shooting the Nazi rifles and Chinese surplus Commie Army shirt, hat and pouch to wear while shooting the Chinese guns. (I do like to get into character, re-enactment mode when shooting foreign milsurps!)

20 Russian military surplus SKS stripper clips

Spring replacement set for SKS.

Sight and windage adjustment tool for AK or SKS

2 slings (1 surplus Commie Chinese AK sling, 1 surplus Russian PPS sub machine gun sling).

Still on the water- two 12 round magazines and two 15 round drums for the Saiga 12 gage semi auto shotgun.

What to order next? I'm thinking an M-1 garand. Sven, any suggestions as to other cool stuff?

BTW I want to invite Obama, Feinstein and Biden by for tea and crumpets just to watch their heads explode when they see all this stuff!

I registered my wife for a concealed carry permit class and license today .

Also I noticed our Vietnamese pot belly pig was MIA. It wandered onto our property and would not leave. We put up signs all over the neighborhood but no one called so we kept it. I think it was a pet and grew too big and someone let it go. It grew really big after they fattened it up and was a mean pig. It was definitely no Wilbur from "Charlottes' Web".

They shot it in the head with my p-64 milsurp polish officers pistol, butchered it and it's in one of my freezers now. I will let ya'all know how Vietnamese pot belled pig bacon tastes!

It's good to be back home for a spell!

Thank you for the kind thoughts and prayers, Horde. Mommy just called and surgery is at 1. As far as I know, it's not a full knee replacement, they're just going to put in some screws to hold together his kneecap. He must have hit exactly on a fracture point because his knee's not very swollen or bruised at all. If it weren't for the fact that he can't put any weight on his leg, it looks like it just needs strapping, not even a brace. He's at the more or less brand new year old hospital and holy crap that place is fancy pants. I am hopeful he won't end up with a staph infection but I'm going to keep an eye out.

In a bizarre way this may be a good thing because once he got over the horribleness of the bad drug reaction of a few months ago, he refused to keep up with his PT for balance and walking. He has Parkinson's and while he can still walk and golf, he's been getting worse. Denial is a helluva thing and he and Mommy were spatting about how he needed more PT. It appears God decided to answer that question for him.

242 WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) — The number of Americans losing their jobs every week has hardly changed over the past six months.

Initial jobless claims fell by 5,000 to a seasonally adjusted 366,000 in the week ended Feb. 2, the Labor Department said Thursday. Economists surveyed by MarketWatch forecast a drop to 360,000.

Claims from two weeks ago were revised up to 371,000 from an initial reading of 368,000.

Weekly applications for new unemployment benefits have ranged from 360,000 to 390,000 since the beginning of 2012. Although they’ve occasionally fallen below that level — claims fell to 330,000 in mid-January, for instance — the number has always bounced back up.

263 On New Year's eve, a girl was charged with hit-and-run in Longmont, Colorado.
She repeatedly said she didn't have anything to do with it, but police have spent the last month convinced she was lying because her car had damage from an unreported minor accident.

The only thing the girl had to back up her story was a church pastor, an entire congregation, witnesses in the parking lot during the period, and a time stamped videotape of her whereabouts.

So the Boulder DA is dropping charges due to lack of evidence.

The world is going nuts.

Under the government’s theory, Citigroup and Bank of America paid SP for ratings that convinced the banks their own CDO offal was rock-solid. And because SP deceived them into thinking the best of their own rubbish, these banks and other lenders suffered more than $5 billion of investment losses, according to the suit.

Black, white, blue -- it's easy to get those colors mixed up. It's also easy to confuse two women with a single guy. The cops that shot them up will probably get a harshly worded letter put into their files.

Longmont Police Cmdr. Jeff Satur repeatedly said
investigators were certain they had the right car, which was impounded
when Balentine was arrested, and that evidence on the car backed up
their suspicions.

with this:
Brackley said on Thursday investigators concluded
her story about the damage was accurate and that no evidence --
forensic or otherwise -- connects her car to the scene of Grimmer's
death.

"The Longmont Police Department deserves credit

He fell out of the tree, broke his patella and tore some ligaments.

I was outside at the time, and supposedly said to him (I was five, and don't remember), "Daddy, that's not how you climb a tree!"

Apparently I was lucky that he was immobile and in great pain.

Presumption of innocence, do you speak it? Note that she was arrested prior to anyone actually doing any checking into the forensics on the vehicle. It's one thing to impound a vehicle during an investigation and another to arrest someone. Guess what, honey? That arrest is now floating around the internets on various background check sites and there is absolutely nothing you can do to make it disappear completely, even with a full expungement. Once it's in someone's dbase somewhere, it's forever.

Reading between the lines, my interpretation is that you have a person who has the misfortune to be related to people involved in a brawl who happens to own a similar car that had some damage so hey let's just arrest her and bingo bango done! Then she got all bitchy and nasty about how she didn't do it and she could prove it and fuck that c--- we know it's her. I am cynical enough to believe that conversations such as that took place. Hot damn, I didn't know SoCal even had a turkey season.

My last class of junior rifle boys had a new line I had not run into before. I like to start them out in prone, no sling. Then you take the ones with real potential and stand them up; the others get the coat.

I had to convert the whole group (11 and 12 years old) to seated, supported "bench rest" because the smaller ones all said "Mom says I don't have the upper body strength for this." All right, they're all shooting more-or-less target rifles, with a little heft to them, but why should 11-year-olds even know the term "upper body strength"? And what boy, lacking it, would claim so?

You never hear girls talk like that. OTOH, if there were girls there, they'd have never said it. One reason I prefer a "mixed" team. Boys used to be harder to teach because they were full of movie macho positions and could not take coaching. Those days are gone: we're well into the "pew, pew" generation.

Is it possible this information is on-line ?

358 Tony Bennett hit the beaches on D-Day with strongly-worded letters in his backpack.

He was in the Battle of The Bulge.

Throwing those letters at German tanks.

I've been looking for it for quite awhile. All I can find are references to it in various other documents.

360 The program can be overridden if necessary from a computer.

I can see no problems arising from this. Or can I?

361 References I have found say it is in the national archives. I've tried to look for it using their website, but it informs me that the documents are in identified racks at the archive.

Posted by: DiogenesLamp at February 08, 2013 09:28 AM (bb5+k)

362 Best advice then would be to go through your CongressCritter or Senator's staff for a good conservative Lawyer's # in DC.

Posted by: sven10077 at February 08, 2013 09:24 AM (LRFds)

I was trying to keep the costs down, say a hundred bucks or so. (How hard could it be just to get copies of a few documents?)
I'm budget conscious that way. I can afford top dollar, I just don't see the point of going that route if I can get a better deal.

I guess you want to keep this info hidden at this time , but if you gave us a clue or some more information , someone in the horde might be able to help...

364 Judge Bean, how much did you pay for your hex Mosin 91 and that old Chinese gun? If you shoot that old Chinese gun let me know.

I hope your FFL send you a Xmas card

365 362 Diogenes lamp,

Yeah you've self-disqualified for Congress like I have...I can balance a budget.

Look the next time I go see my foster brother in Bristow I'll give you a heads up and see if i can go ask around.

It may be ~3 months though.

366 I was really wanting someone with a conservative
bent. There is a reason for this. If the information I'm looking for
reveals what I expect it to reveal, it needs to be in the hands of
someone with a conservative bent.

I don't mind telling anyone what i'm looking for, but I would prefer not to let the "Sandy Bergers" get first crack at it. A public forum is not the place to mention it.

Are you on the AOS user group?

I'll try to look into my credentials again.

377 Diogenes, I assume its something g I can copy scan and email to you. If its more complicat then that I might abuse an intern and have them do it.

When I have to suit up and go downtown, I eat lunch over the Smithsonians - except in the summer - walking past the archives.

It ought to be pretty simple. I have found a paper that quotes one of the documents I want, and it says the original is in the Archive. I don't see why it would be any more difficult than scanning them and emailing them.

I'm wondering why you say you don't have a conservative bent?

All I can find is a quote from one of the documents I want, with a reference to the original being in the national archives. I want to verify that the quote is accurate. Also the circumstances surrounding the quote lead me to believe that there are other documents from the same author that should reveal further information that I would like to have.

381 Judge Bean, you probably already know this, but let's pass it around. If your Lowe commission rifle is 8mm, be very careful with ammunition. It was one of the first rifles to be designed for all-smokeless powder loads, and therefore looks pretty hefty around the action.

But the technical definition of "8mm" changed, and modern 8 is a much tighter fit. It will chamber, but produces much higher chamber pressures, and the rifles are prone to blow up. Obtain known antique-size 8mm cartridges, mark them, reload, and use those exclusively.
