| Overnight Open Thread (2-7-2013)Red Letter Media's Review of Revenge of the Sith Okay this is kinda old but I happened to watch it again last weekend while trying to explain to Mrs. Maetenloch just how awful the Star Wars prequels were and why. (Lucky for me she indulges my little rants and feigns interest remarkably well) Actually of all the reviews this might be the most insightful and educational one - as well as the most poignant when Plinkett considers what might have been. Here he analyzes RotS and the entire story arc in the movies and points out where they went wrong (and right). He even gives Lucas credit for avoiding some of the more tempting mistakes. Some of the more interesting points from the review for the ADD types: The huge fundamental logic gaps in the story that got worse as the series progressed, the fact that Anakin becoming Darth Vader just isn't all that interesting, how using blue screen in every scene ultimately makes it static and boring. Also the parallels of Anakin's story and Citizen Kane (and Lucas and Charles Foster Kane) were something new to me (must have taken a bathroom break during the original viewing.) It's particularly telling when he shows similar scenes from the original Star Wars and the prequels - in nearly every aspect except for special effects the original is better. And even the new special effects aren't necessarily an improvement: At one point Plinkett replaces the movie with a scene from a Star Wars video game and the sad part is that you don't even notice for a while. It's all just one giant video game with the about same emotional impact as a gaming session.
Guns Drove Nazis To Kill Says Tony Bennett At least I think that's what he was getting at. But his comments at a Mayors Against Illegal Guns rally this week were such a hot mess of stupidity that who knows what he really meant - other than guns are bad, bad, bad. "My own children were just told don't ever have a gun, no guns in my house, they're not allowed." "[Guns] shouldn't be on our streets here," The Pension Fund That Ate California After spending years dogged by unpaid debts, California labor leader Charles Valdes filed for bankruptcy in the 1990s-twice. At the same time, he held one of the most influential positions in the American financial system: chair of the investment committee for the California Public Employees' Retirement System, or CalPERS, the nation's largest pension fund for government workers. Valdes left the board in 2010 and now faces scrutiny for accepting gifts from another former board member, Alfred Villalobos-who, the state alleges, spent tens of thousands of dollars trying to influence how the fund invested its assets. Questioned by investigators about his dealings with Villalobos, Valdes invoked the Fifth Amendment 126 times. This is a cautionary tale on how CalPERS, the CA state pension fund, metastasized from a boring but well-run holding account into a giant black hole of debt and obligation that threatens to push many California cities and even the state itself into bankruptcy. And how badly was it run? This bad: Another reason not to buy CalPERS's stock-market excuse is that its losses have been far worse than they should have been, thanks to a number of overly risky investment practices. Wilshire Consulting reported last year that CalPERS's returns over the past five years have trailed those of 99 percent of large public pension funds. In a just world everyone who was in charge of CalPERS over the last 15 years would be in prison. But that ain't the world we live in.
What Sequestration Will Really Mean A leaked set slides to be presented by the Army to the White House on the impact of sequestration has appeared and includes the following: - Only deploying units in Afghanistan, Korea and the division ready brigade will be allowed to conduct readiness training. All other units will conduct collective small unit training in first part of fiscal 2014. That means 78 percent of non-deploying brigade combat teams will be ill-prepared for future contingency operations. - Interrupts timeline for pulling vehicles and equipment out of Afghanistan and delays reset of $20 billion in post war equipment needed for future operations. - No new depot maintenance orders issued beyond January. This could affect units in Alaska, Georgia, Hawaii, Colorado, Kentucky, Louisiana, New York and North Carolina and delay the repair and reset of 1,300 tactical vehicles, 14,000 radios and 17,000 weapons. - 250,000 Army civilians would be furloughed for up to 22 days. - 5,000 contract, temporary and term employees would be released Now the military budget does have a good deal of cruft and waste built into it but this is not the way to make cuts without seriously hurting our capabilities. But until people actually experience some kind of impact from our limited budget they will keep voting for big government and low taxes. Following the Left's Example on Guns: Personalize, Personalize, Personalize You're sound asleep when you hear a thump outside your bedroom door. Half-awake, and nearly paralyzed with fear, you hear muffled whispers. At least two people have broken into your house and are moving your way. Sound crazy? Well it actually happened. And if we want to fight back against the Left's anti-gun narrative, our arguments need to be personalized as well. Good evening.
Speaking of Star Wars we are all aware that Disney wants to do individual spin off films, right? They want to start with two and three characters up for consideration are Yoda, Han Solo and Boba Fett. I can *kinda* see a Han Solo Versus Boba Fett movie, but I can't really see them in seperate features. And Yoda...no, sorry, wouldn't work. I think they should dip into the Expanded Universe and do Mara Jade. That would be cool. Posted by: Robert at February 07, 2013 10:29 PM (LUnTP) 20
Well, we have to look forward to how the MSM is going to cover a Black liberal Obama supporter that killed three cops and is still on the run.
He's not a mass murder, he is just confused. The guns made him do it. They have already edited out his liberal rant on AP. Why let everyone know he loves Obama, Chris Mathews, MSM and hates the NRA? Thanos in The Avengers *2*, yes. It's all well and good for the sequel and there is going to be story-lines set up and so on. Same goes for the first Avengers, all the characters were well established so an alien invasion story isn't unwarranted. Make the threat large enough for a group of larger than life characters. WB wants to do what Marvel did but in reverse, in which case they need to do a story that's much more down to earth. The villains should be...Legion Of Doom-esque.
Posted by: Robert at February 07, 2013 11:09 PM (LUnTP) Don't even waste time with a Justice League movie. You want that make it a "sequel." And here's what you do first. Batman/Superman. No extra superheroes. That is what people actually want to see. It also doesn't require you to do additional plot building for other heroes. They are fully known quantities, and you can essentially have them in their own universe separate from individual movies. Give them an opponent requiring them to work together, and at the end have it revealed that even if they won a bigger threat is on the horizon requiring a bigger group than just those two. And that is essentially exactly what Bruce Timm did with the animated universe. Batman, then Superman, then combine them together some, and then move onto the Justice League. And that formula is pretty much the reason Warner Bros. is pumping out two animated movies a year. Posted by: buzzion at February 07, 2013 11:23 PM (GULKT) 188

I'd expect that the opening storyline of the New 52 relaunch is the template they're using. The idea being that the audience knows who almost all of these characters are, more or less. The only character given an origin was Cyborg, as he is also the only one who didn't have his own book relaunching that same month. Leaving him out of a movie would simplify things, although kids are familiar with a version of the character from the animated Teen Titans series. Anyway, that storyline used Darkseid as the big bad sufficient to draw all of these very different characters together. It was done in such a way that they didn't realize they'd gotten lucky and Darkseid would be a far greater threat if chose to make a more concerted effort in the future. The Earth 2 and Worlds Finest titles show that the world next door paid a much higher price in driving off Darkseid. In any case, they have no choice but to rely on audience familiarity with the characters, since they don't have time to do a bunch of movies as Marvel had already done when the decision to do the Avengers solidified. Darkseid is a fairly well known character beyond comics and would be a lot less work than a rogue's gallery assemblage of the heroes leading foes. Besides, has Lex Luthor and the Joker working together ever been a believable pairing? Posted by: epobirs at February 07, 2013 11:30 PM (kcfmt) 212

I live in within six miles of Boston. The only news I heard today was on Mark Levin and Limbaugh. The local radio show I listen to had clips of the Boston Mayor, Menino, aka known as Mumbles and the TFG twin, in speeches and acts, and politics, our Gov. Deval Patrick.
Deval thinks he can order all cars off the road by noon tomorrow. There is a large snow storm headed here. It's all they have talked about a lll week. Mark Levin confirmed what I posted on an older thread late this afternoon, the TFG went to sleep, and neither Hillary of TFT were told about what was going on in Benghazi on September 11, 2012. The death of three American Citizens is on their hands. Do I have to ask the obvious, what would the media do if that happened less than two months before a presidential elections when the incumbent had an R after their name? It pisses me off! SCOAMF must be impeached, he's done too many things without the authority of the Constitution. Add the four dead American citizens from Libya, two from Fast & Furious, it could be more but I can only think of two right now and he'd be out of a job if we had a media that investigated!! I have what Ace had earlier today. i read on my iPhone but did not post. Apparently, there are competing Newtown children's choirs, one of which may have been formed by the request of ABC News or something with the Talking Heads involved. A group performed on ABC, at a NBA game, the Superbowl, and now the Grammys. Ryan Seacrest was involved with one of the groups. It is so creepy, and I would not be surprised if the WH is in consultations with some of the people involved.

Not quite an olympic sport -- more of a serious medical assessment. 30 years of steady drinking + 5 days of keepin' it clean -> how's the liver function test? If "good", ignore whinging. Doctor goes, "Atkins" [which the medical establishment has been hoping to discredit since his book was published.] and thinks to check liver function to show that it's too dangerous for me to do anything but graze and chew cud. Progressives’ Final Solution
The use of racial divisiveness has long been a hallmark of the Progressive Left. The stoking of racial hatred and ignorance at universities by peddling “critical race theory” or other such grievance studies and attempts to push “multiculturalism” has grown more explicit over time, and is perhaps approaching a crescendo. These “studies” often involve how “anglo-normative” values or “White privilege” oppresses non-White “persons of color” and can lead to White people being oppressed by their own whiteness! The proffered solution to these problems is to destroy “Whiteness” (or alternatively, “kyriarchy“), so that it may be replaced by some vision of utopia. We have now reached the point where that proffered solution is being put into effect: A mass shooter confessed he learned to hate white people in college. http://politicalhat.com/?p=1381 Posted by: The Political Hat at February 08, 2013 12:34 AM (Vk2pI) 386

Sorry -- away for a while.
To recapitulate, I just turned 50, I'm fat, I've spent 25 years as a CPA while my blood pressure was elevated (when I graduated college, it was more like "blood seep" -- 95/60). I'm thankful for my relations that had gout as teetotalers....'cause it made it abundantly clear that I should take the damned pill and ignore the recommended lifestyle changes. And, now that the doc has decided to worry about liver function because I'm reducing carbs instead of calories, I thought I'd play "nice" for a few days before the blood draw and see how much "permanent" damage was being done (if you get a blood draw during a hangover, don't be surprised if it says you're an alcoholic on the road to ruin). To a certain extent, you want to have a doctor that's going to challenge you -- critique your lifestyle for harmful behaviors. But, on another FUNDAMENTAL level, you want one that doesn't just bitch at you, but rather works for you to enhance your life. Posted by: cthulhu at February 08, 2013 01:31 AM (kaalw) 447

Adapting the X-wing novels would be good. Not even necessarily directly,
just use Wedge Antilles and Rogue/Wraith Squadron. You could scrap the rest if you follow the general theme of the novels. Fighter Squadron/Commando Unit. Posted by: buzzion at February 07, 2013 10:36 PM (GULKT) Never mind Rogue Squadron, go with Wraith Squadron. "Pretty. What do we blow up first?" You could have the funniest Star Wars movie yet, and not in a unintentional way (as in Holiday Special). Plenty of good characters, plenty of action, plenty of humor, and plenty of X-Wing space combat action. On the other hand, I personally would prefer to see Ysanne Isard be the main antagonist rather than Warlord Zsinj or Admiral Trigit. She went up against Rogue Squadron much more than Wraith. And a big-screen adaptation of the Lusankya's escape from Coruscant could be fun to see. There's also more Jedi presence in Rogue, and the idea of making a Star Wars film without having any main characters wield lightsabers in it might scare off producers. Vitriol and spite, what good do they do us? Well, for one thing, they keep us sane in an insane world. I mention this only because I am tired of the recent attempt to attack the current administrations use of drones. I can understand if people want to attack the fool at the top, but leave the killing of our enemies out of it. You know that this could all be a plot by the guy at the top to start a controversy. One that could limit our use of deadly force against his Islamist friends. He bows down to them. He veto's the supply of weapons to people that might overthrow Assad. Why? So that when the "rebels" win, they can say that we did not help them. There is no clear path forward, but let's just keep killing the bad guys (with drones rather than our children on the ground, regardless of whetherthey are Americans or Martians or any other hateful group of devil worshipers!) while we figure it out. Aye, aye?

Posted by: ElKomandante at February 08, 2013 03:47 AM (MCAFI) Lot of people hate the cops; that's mostly drugs and gangs. Then there are the few twisted minds that just like to stir things up. Add in a few revolutionaries and there you go. If Dorner is getting help, this could turn into a real mess. Ask Bill Ayers, he would know. Remember that the story's not real. The events are, but we don't experience them. It's just a thing on TV. So it's a matter of story structure. He's the most rational actor in the story. People can understand a guy who snaps and goes on a comic-book righteous-vengeance binge. They don't want to, necessarily, but--his antagonists are wildly lashing out at completely innocent people. They're dangerous to us. He's not. He has a list and we're not on it. Most people, in order to buy into a story, have to identify with somebody in it. He's the least bad guy in this show.
