Panetta: We Can't Just Go Saving Every Consulate That's Under Terrorist Attack
Demspey: We Didn't Act Because State Never Asked Us To, But It's Also Not Their Fault. It's No One's Fault. Sometimes Shit Happens, and Who Ya Gonna Call? Not Us.

Let's just call it The Immaculate Massacre. We're being asked to believe that no one was responsible... except God, I suppose.

Notice that none of the perpetrators are responsible either -- despite the Administration's spin that the only thing that matters is finding the guilty parties (and not the merely grossly negligent parties) they haven't found those either, and in fact I haven't heard any sort of push on this. The Administration tells us this is of critical importance, and then does everything possible to bury the story so that the public forgets about it

Panetta:

“The United States military is not and should not be a global 911 service capable of arriving on the scene within minutes to every possible contingency around the world,” Panetta told the Senate Armed Services Committee.

The military shouldn't be capable of intervening to save US personnel from technically-US-territory in a country they just intervened in months ago?

That's too much to ask?

He's also shifting the terms of discussion to "the military." The problem isn't "the military." It's the civilian leadership. But he's shifting the failure of civilian leadership to this supposed inability of the military.

Dempsey:

“Why didn’t you put forces in place to be ready to respond?,” Senator John McCain asked the general.

Dempsey started, “Because we never received a request to do so, number one. And number two, we –”

McCain interrupted, “You never heard of Ambassador Stevens’s repeated warnings?”

“I had, through General Ham,” responded Dempsey, referring to the commander of AFRICOM. “But we never received a request for support from the State Department, which would have allowed us to put forces–”

“So it’s the State Department’s fault?”

“I’m not blaming the State Department,” Dempsey responded.

Evidently, Hillary figured that there weren't any significant documents in Benghazi worth protecting.

So far as our federal government branches interpret, "US interests deserving US protection" are not US lives, nor the US Constitution. Beyond the Washingtonians' self-preservation "interests", so far as our federal government asserts, US interests amount to global corporations. Don't tell me "corporations are people, too" just because some smartass thought that comment sounded reasonable. 198 170 13 hours, horseshit Dempsey. If that was the case, then it was because you over staffed the problem with contingencies from Washington. Less than a dozen guys held that building for eight hours, under fire. You didn't need to send a battalion.

If AFRICOM couldn't extract those guys in six hours, then operational status of AFRICOM, its evaluators, and leadership needs to be reconsidered.

Hell, the Italians could have gotten there in six hours.

The result of this lack of accountability is that imbecile democrats are pushing even harder for policies that don't work and the republicans are turning into even bigger pussies than they already were. Let it burn.

So Pannetta and Dempsey were not in an emergency meeting. It was an already scheduled meeting in which, apparently, other things were discussed as well.

Here is another question I have: was Obama so PO'd about Pannetta and Clinton going ahead with the bin Laden strike that he gave them explicit orders not to move troops without his knowledge, ever again?

And did he refuse to talk to them after that 5PM briefing?

That's not how to think of it. Situations where shit blows up and anybody inside the shit talks (without permission) are extremely rare.

Nobody's being "silenced." Simply, they are not us. (Ask 'em.) All we'll ever hear from them is what we've already heard--and the one useful tidbit they threw us is a clue to what spin(s) and lies were, at the time, consideredready for deployment. Turns out they all work!

After this occurred, there was high praise for the poor saps who were relying on their colleagues to provide help for them and dying as a result. Then, the Administration proceeded to wipe its rear on their pointless deaths. No one did anything wrong.

278 As a matter of fact, when it comes to AA, (and I know this is not an original thought) it occurs to me that the truly racist aspect of it is having low or lower expectations because someone is black. But hell, I'm sure I would be labeled a racist for even voicing this thought.

Go forth, under the open sky, and list
To Nature’s teachings, while from all around--
Earth and her waters, and the depths of air--
Comes a still voice--Yet a few days, and thee
The all-beholding sun shall see no more
In all his course; nor yet in the cold ground,
Where thy pale form was laid with many tears,
Nor in the embrace of ocean, shall exist
Thy image. Earth, that nourish’d thee, shall claim
Thy growth, to be resolved to earth again,
And, lost each human trace, surrendering up
Thine individual being, shalt thou go
To mix for ever with the elements,
To be a brother to the insensible rock,
And to the sluggish clod, which the rude swain
Turns with his share, and treads upon.

Posted by: Niedermeyer's Dead Horse at February 07, 2013 01:59 PM (piMMO)

Your use of the words 'silenced/eliminated' is pure breathless hyperbole. The survivors, all of whom I'm guessing are government employees, have no doubt been ordered not to speak publicly about the matter until 'the investigation is concluded' or some such thing. Since most of them are possibly/probably members of the intelligence community, they'd keep their mouths shut as a matter of course.

The reason for their silence is straightforward enough: the Benghazi dead remain intangibleabstractions to the public until one or more of the survivors speaks up and starts furnishing details. Once the details come out, the story becomes concrete, real, a story people can get their heads around. It's one thing to talk about high-level decision-making, which is a cool, detached process, like a chess game seen from above. It's another thing entirely to hear a first-hand account of two men, in a desperate fight to defend the compound, being blown to pieces on a rooftop by a mortar that could've been taken out by assets in the air if only the President and his people hadn't been worried about the possible harm the story of a resurgent Al Queda might cause to his reelection chances.

You see what I mean?

315 Why the fuck is this a question of "should" ? Whether or not the US military SHOULD be some kind of global 911 service is IRRELEVANT.

The question is, were they within range and capable of such an operation ? COULD they have responded. If they COULD, then the only other relevant question is WHY DIDN'T THEY.

What they call that, Mr. Panetta is a STRAWMAN argument. There is nobody trying to make the case that this is a failure due to not having a policy of the US military acting as the global 911 service. Why don't you just STFU.

324 Question begging is all this administration is good for. The question isn't whether we can respond from some far distant locations to any spot in the world where there is trouble. The question is why there were no damned marines in place at one of our embassies in a hostile country. If you needed air support then her clothing budget could have provided that as well. Hell, just show the terrorists a picture of Michelle in one of her urban rodeo clown outfits that we have to pretend is stylish and I am pretty sure they would have thrown down their arms and run away screaming before filing a complaint for war crimes with the UN.

346 The administration isn't concerned with "catching" and "bringing to justice" the perpetrators because they know exactly who did it and where they are. The reason they'll never "catch" them is because they're our business partners in shipping Libyan weapons to Syrian rebels. The one question no one, I mean no one, has asked and likely never will ask is:

WHAT WAS STEVENS DOING IN BENGHAZI WITH MINIMUM SECURITY!?!?!

The cover story that he was there for the opening of a Turkish Cultural Center is laughable on its face. Everybody in the Intel business (I was in it for > 15 years) knows that "Cultural Centers" or Intel Ops Centers for keeping tabs on your local assets.

Here's what happened:

1) We were buying Khaddafi's weapons from the local militias to ship to the Syrian rebels with help from the Turks.

2) The CIA grabbed a close relative (brother by some reports) of the Militia leader we were working with for questioning about his ties to AQ.

3) The Militia lured Stevens to Benghazi to mediate the dispute and Stevens brought minimum security as a sign of good faith, probably at the request of the militia leader.

4) They tried to grab Stevens to trade for the guy in CIA custody.

5) Things went sideways...

6) And now Obama, Clinton, etc. are all laughing there asses off about how dumb everybody is for missing the real story.

Jeesh!! I'd laugh too.

“The United States military is not and should not be a global 911 service capable of arriving on the scene within minutes to every possible contingency around the world,” Panetta told the Senate Armed Services Committee.
Well, let's take that 911 comparison. Suppose someone called 911 and said there were a group of armed men firing at their house and they were firing back to defend themsleves. The police are 15 minutes away, but don't send anyone out. After half an hour from the call, the attackers end up breaking in and killing the occupants. Later, when questioned about why they sent no aid, the police reply that they had to first get more information to find out exactly what was happening before sending anyone. When this falls apart, they then exclaim "The police are not here to respond in minutes to every lost cat in the entire country!". That's what we have here.
