At last! Some good news! Now hopefully we won't have to see a geriatric Han Solo and a feeble Princess Leia trying to fight rogue Empire holdouts. We can get some fresh blood in there and let the legends remain legendary.

6 (Reuters) - Several U.S. retailers reported mixed January sales results
on Thursday, as consumers faced a hit to their take-home pay from higher
payroll taxes, while cold weather may have helped spur purchases of
winter clothes.

Overall, analysts expect 3.5 percent same-store sales growth for January
across 18 retailers, excluding drugstore chains Walgreen Co (WAG) and Rite-Aid Corp (RAD), according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S. That would be down from 4.4 percent growth in January 2012.

See comrades, the economy is doing just fine. Another round of higher taxes couldn't possibly hurt

11 I'd like to ask Nanny Bloomberg when he's going to get around to banning New Yorkers. Not banning things to New Yorkers, but just banning New Yorkers in general. Since theyseem to be getting into so much trouble, what with all their soda drinking and styrofoam cup using and salt sprinkling and gun having, it'd just be easier to ban them out of existence rather than keep banning every little thing they purportedly misuse.

Obviously. To a large extent that's an unemployable generation. And things actually will get a lot worse for them over the next few years. The next recession (which might already be under way) will hit that demographic especially hard.

"A muslim who raped [in the sense of statutory rape -EV] a 13-year-old
girl he groomed on Facebook has been spared a prison sentence after a
judge heard he went to an Islamic faith school where he was taught that
women are worthless.
Adil Rashid, 18, claimed he was not aware that it was illegal for him
to have sex with the girl because his education left him ignorant of
British law"

42 There is no such thing as "radical Islam". The true radicals of Islam are those that want to live in peace with other religions.

Islam demands it's followers wipe out all other religions by any means. Sometimes that means other sects of Islam.

Power is what Islam is all about, in the same way democrats are all about power. If it helps the cause they are for it (i.e. the SPLC shooter or suicide bombers). If it hurts their power they are against it.

There are many people who want to "do good". The problem with Islam is that it twists that impulse of good people into violence instead of a better society. That is why every place Islam gains power turns into a hell hole. Islam twists good into evil in pusuit of power.

The good news is that it's supposed to be fairly light, fluffy snow, at least here in northern New England. So hopefully there will be fewer downed trees and power lines than there would be otherwise. The bad news is the wind is supposed to be pretty strong, so visibility will be absolute shit.

I've already asked for a vacation day for tomorrow. There was no "crowd." He met with the mayor and others in the office of the Savannah U. S. Attorney's office.

Ironically, last night we attended a dinner to discuss an initiative to teach young, uneducated black parents to help educate and nurture their own children. It offers hope, and then you hear a story about a woman's daughter working in the inner city, who knows a young woman with nine children by several different baby daddies.

I didn't know it until I got my eval for LASIK, but I was apparently just short of legally blind (mostly due to an astigmatism). There is "staring," so when you look at lights at night they all take on that four-pointed star look. And you have take a little more care (and by little, I mean- I actually have to think about it, when I never did before) to make sure your eyes stay moist. When my allergies are really bad, I end up using eye-drops (basic saline is fine) in addition to my allergy meds.

My vision isn't quite as good as it was when my glasses RX was spot on- I could correct to 20/10, and I'm somewhere between 20/20 and 20/15 now.

We have always had a pool. I just took our above ground one down and gave it away. We actaully went to a salt water system which drastically reduced maintenance time.

Did we start counting "women who stay home to raise children" in the workforce?

What percentage of women under 30 with children are married, anyway, and why do they let proggs count "unmarried women with children living off the government" as "stay at home mothers"?

176 We moved into a house with an above ground pool 5 years ago. Some summers have been easier better than others. In good years, the expense was maybe 15 bucks a week in chlorine tablets. Other years I dropped a couple hundred in a month trying to get it clean/clear. It's all about not slipping in the maintenance routine. A day or two of no chems in the wrong weather and you're doomed to a big clean up process.

177 My subdivision has a pool, and has had one since it was first built in the late 70's. We pay an assessment fee every year (about $200) and it was great when the kids were little. We used to spend a lot of time there. Now, I only use it occasionally, or when the grandkids want to swim.

It does add to our home's value, though, because here in Indiana there aren't that many places to swim. Your choices are the Y, membership in a country club, or your own pool, unless you live where the subdivision has one. Here on the south side of Indy I can only think of 3 subdivisions which do.

Posted by: Anna Puma (+SmuD) at February 07, 2013 10:07 AM (LqrVH)

I had a pool for a number of years. The major expense wasn't chemicals which ran about $200/year. It was electricity and then water. The electricity ran about $110/month when I had it on a separate meter because I had to run the recirculation pump 24/7 due to the presence of the ubiquitous loblolly pine.

And a HOA pool doesn't really qualify as a "community" pool since the only people who can theoretically use it are the members in the association.

The latter tended to stay away from the swim-side of the beach, though, because there were just so many people.

Obviously. To a large extent that's an unemployable generation.
And things actually will get a lot worse for them over the next few
years. The next recession (which might already be under way) will hit
that demographic especially hard.
========
That's the unsung tragedy of the Obama Depression. Look, they were barely employable before the collapse--poor communication skills, poor work ethic, sense of entitlement, etc.
But this generation has it way, way worse than the Great Depression era kids. Back then, kids all learned some manual labor skills, they could at least do something else besides pull levers in a factory.
But we got rid of shop and ag classes. And the closest any of them have come to a farm is ordering a Big Mac and fries.
Now, compound this with the fact that they are in the formative earnings potential period of their lives, the time when you're supposed to be saving for a wife, kids and a house while becoming an expert in the area of your profession, enabling significant salary increases as you take on more responsibility both at work and in your personal life.

If you shoot you'll be worse off for a time, maybeup to ayear, but its all good. Just us the irons and figure it out.

After these 6 years I'm finding a need for reading glasses at times. Infrequent and lowest power, but it is there. YMMV

My first two homes had pools. Sold them within days, even in winter. So there's that. No matter what RE people tell you, people like pools. Especially if you don't try to reclaim the initial cost. Sure, go five or ten grand higher, and hope.

I think you have to look at the install cost spread over a ten or fifteen year basis, for example, then ask yourself if you're willing to pay that for annual entertainment expense.

The fucking dagos were carrying on their own little laff riot party and not listening to a thing that was being said while they gibbered among themselves like a bunch of fish merchants. And even if you find one why bother? Buy a house with an in ground pool
already there. They do not up the price of a house and can even detract

Once again: Texas
This city has at least 4 public pools I can think of. And our little quasi-HOA (we have no enforcement power) of 26 shares a pool.

That's the way I'd go. You can bitch all you want about HOAs, but you get a good one and it's a good deal--keeps out the riff-raff and you can split the costs. Monthly pool maintenance can be $300-$400 in the summer.

I was kind of intrigued by that story since it has all sorts of potential fail in it. First of all, the yahoo turds writing that story are down to their usual level of reporting ineptitude; ie. Asia is the largest continent so they have to be a little bit more specific on what they mean by Asian clothing. Second, since Duke is well known for running roughshod over the rights of the accused, led by their cocksucker president Richard "don't call me Dick" Brodhead, I went to Durham in Wonderland to find out what KC Johnson had to say about it. KC must not be aware of it yet or is preparing a post on it; but all my fellow morons should go there anyway because his most recent post was about how the city of Durham put up some mural that features that asshole Nifong on it along with some other twatmuffin who was complicit in railroading the accused in the fake rape case. And speaking of the rape case, there's an entry from last month that comments on how the UNC Tarholes reacted to a JEF or Stedman request to take away even more rights of the accused in campus rape cases. Make no doubt about it; I am *not* in favor of rapists, rather I'm against non rapists who didn't do a fucking thing getting jammed up in the name of nanny state-ism.

The "truth" about what happened in Benghazi exists in bits and pieces in people's files, manilla folders, e-mails, etc.

Nobody wants to push the "data" together, because the story that it would tell would be a pretty bad one. It would make Hillary and Obama look pretty bad.

There's still a lot that we don't know, and frankly our so-called government doesn't think we deserve to know, or even the Select Intelligence committees in the House and Senate. And we will never know. Sooner or later, all the pertinent records will be destroyed, so that even if a future Executive would like to drill down and figure out what happened, the trail will be burned and cold.

These "people" who run our government are criminals. Really. It's not that negligence, incompetence and stupidity killed Ambassor Stevens and three others, it's the willful disregard of the process and reporting of what happened that is a crime. Because we cannot question the infallibility of our narcissist President and his sycophantic cabinet.

And the sycophantic followers in the media. I usually watch a few minutes every night of MSNBC, and it is comical how their entire purpose is the daily denunciation of the Republican Party. They are truly not a news organization and truly a propaganda machine for the Democrat.

As for book reviews; I got my first "one star" review on Amazon.. I'm pretty sure the dude was a Dem, as it was incoherent. I quote several Democrats in the book, especially the ones that say "America is mean" or "... air raiding villages, and killing civilians" along with pretty solid examples of what we were doing in A-stan and Iraq that directly contradicts those idiotic statements. And we all know how the Democrat faithful respond to people quoting their gods. It was kinda funny.
Even so, if any in the Horde has actually read "A Flowershop in Baghdad", this would be a good time to go over and, umm, discuss.
Im thinking about doing a little more advertising, here, and a couple of other websites. Day by Day cartoon has a unique bidding system that is fairly cheap.
Its always about getting the word out.

I suggested deleting the lions share of crap off my c: drive of stuff I'm not using but the consultant said no... It still has to scan unused space. Seems like bullshit to as Im staring at the scan go through tens of thousands of files I was gonna ditch anyways.

412 Nice of you, Jane, but I'm taken to wondering 'why is it our
responsibility to clean these places up when the residents don't enough
of a fuck to get off their asses and do anything themselves.'

In an honest defense- by now you're talking about the ones who were reared in an environment that basically rejected self-respect and individual responsibility. From the time they were children they saw other people (usually the government, but often well-meaning charities) providing/doing everything for them.

And you wonder why they won't do it themselves? Many of them have no clue that they should. The ones who do know that, don't think they're capable.

If you want to fix the inner cities, you have to stop passing judgement on them and start helping them take responsibility for themselves. Yes, it really works, but you're talking (minimum) a generational commitment. And Government can't do it.

Note- I'm not talking about giving anyone a pass on actively bad behavior (whether criminal or otherwise). I'm talking about helping them realize that, if they want what "whitey" has, they're going to have to work for it.

Totally agree with your second point, there. Like I said- Government can't fix this mess. In many ways, Government is the mess.

To the first point: it's not quite so simple. Imagine you'd never learned how to balance a checkbook, and suddenly people are telling you your a loser and are giving up on you because you keep bouncing checks. In many cases that's exactly what's happening.

It might have been better to say, however, "Stop condemning them," rather than "Stop passing judgement." The differences are subtle, but they're there.

Preview of next Christmas: Aunt Radish and Uncle Scooter start going at each other with broken beer bottles over the cat while cat-obsessed nephew who is too young to play the game swipes and misplaces it.

Good times, good times.

Yeah, and my original comment alluded to that- We can't (and I don't) give them a pass on actively bad behavior.

Allen, you know how impossible it is to foster democracy in the Middle
East? Yeah, well, that's what this effort would look like in the inner
cities.

That's simply not true, and people have actually gone out and proven it. But it takes a massive commitment that most people are unwilling to put forth. Heck, I'm unwilling to do it, and I understand its the only way to fix the problem.

The first thing that is required, though, is becoming one of them. Move into those neighborhoods. Let your kids go to school with their kids. Invite them over for dinner.

Eventually what will happen (and I'm serious when I say it takes about a generation- 10 to 20 years, easy) is the people there will begin to see that they can, and therefore should, take responsibility for their own homes and for their own lives. Until that happens, no amount of "charity" will help.

Oh BS. Some people....sounds so anecdotal and so liberal.

Public shame used to be the way that those who were on welfare wanted to get off. Drafting a check without funds to cover that check is a crime. Being called a loser is pretty mild punishment. The problem is that people don't get called out on BS sh*t like "I can't understand how a checking account works" they cop these poor me excuses instead of saying "He's right! I am a loser for drafting bad checks. I need to get a handle on this, let ME figure out how this works"

Successful people weren't taught everything they know from mom, dad, and school, there is a whole raft of stuff they needed to know and they took the responsibility themselves to learn it. That self determined way of life that includes responsibility for yourself including what you don't know, is one of the most valuable things you can teach the unsuccessful. Not coddle their excuses why they can't do basic things.

It's also akin to King Canute commanding the tides to stop. You have to change the culture - not the wider culture - their culture, and then you have a chance. Sorry...but whitey don't play that.

I spent 3 years at the U.S. Department of Labor working exactly these kinds of local economic development issues - including Katrina recovery. When I moved to DoD I was detailed back to DOL as a consultant for the Auto Community Task Force to do the same thing.....

I disagree Allen. They are this way because they want it is easier for them, and they follow the path of least resistance - which is what most humans do.

They don't want to learn anything else because, that's hard. Trying to teach them self-reliance is a waste of time because self-reliance is more difficult than sucking on the government titty.

They have been indoctrinated. No amount of telling them 'this isn't right' and 'go out and work for it' will work.

They believe the path to getting what whitey has is having it TAKEN from whitey and given to them. And, so far, it's working well - they are overfed, clothed, housed, have nice TVs and cellphones, Ipads, etc. They have everything middle class people who go to work every day have, and they don't have to lift a finger. We can never compete with the 'free shit' message.

Inner Cities are humanity in it's natural state.
