All Your Children Are Belong To Us
Defenders of the status quo in educations can oft paint truly horrific scenes of children being harmed, brainwashed, or left behind due to “evil” “Reich-wing” conservatives; typically the proffered villains are the evil “corporations” since that is what corporations do, right? An article over at the extreme leftist blog “Common Dreams” blames ALEC for pushing vouchers that allow poor and minority students to break from a failed system, for pushing testing to objectively find out if students are even learning in the classroom, or allowing schools to outsource some services in order to not waste money on unionized public employees. But above all else, the Edu-crat establishment is fearful that by loosing their monopoly on our children, they will not longer be able to warp and manipulate their young minds. Their honest claim can be summed up as “All Your Children Are Belong To Us” More: http://politicalhat.com/?p=1298 Posted by: The Political Hat at February 06, 2013 10:07 PM (Vk2pI) 7

So, I just got an old DS game used. "Feel the Magic XY <3 XX". One of the early DS games that made use of the unique mic and touch screen controls.
One of the game's main menu options is to play with a female model. Use the stylus to touch her hand or feet, and she'll react like you stepped on her foot or pinched her fingers. This is where Japanese perversion kicks in - you can trigger some other reactions by touching her chest or her crotch. I feel rather dirty now ... She was watching him give his charming monologue that she turned off the tube and just stared. As a "good soldier" or someone trying to be she knows she can't go nuts about his games. She got (on paper) a 1.7% raise BUT the tircare increase, the dental increase, AND the resumption of full Soc Sec w/holding(which I've gone on about at length as being the DUMBEST 'tax break' ever going) she wound up with a ~-.2% "raise" Next FY she will be bearing another Tricare hike I guarantee it. I don't know if Mary was ever "real".
I thought it was based on a real writer of letters-to-the-editor of one of the smaller NE rags that always published her dozens of wild, anti-Bush diatribes. It sort of reminded me of the WaPo or NYT "man in the street" interviewee (all of whom were supposed to be chosen at random) but who was quoted for his anti-Bush views dozens of times. I trust a fair amount of my neighbors, like my neighbor the former Marine across the street, whose wife has MS and he's not going anywhere. A guy down the street is a former SEAL and pretty squirrley, but I hear he has an "arsenal" in the basement gun safe (one of my other looney tune neighbors was appalled about THAT!). 272 Secret Squirrel's Ballz Und Sheft,
Rioters that are in a mass frenzy tend to move at the set rate of walking an average walking pace for a riot is about 2 miles and hour..... so it then breaks down to a psychological exercise in how long the riot maintains cohesion and intensity. Looting slows down the progress but looters can also move in organized packs. Vehicle mobility is a concern and the motivation of the crowd psychology and group dynamic can increase range of action. The deeper you are in that radius from an urban center the more likely you are to have advanced warning of the type of activity you are likely facing. Take Indy metro for example, if you look at a map of south Indy proper you'll see that going along 65 southbound you have Greenwood with malls and several stores as well as a residential band with a 5 mile radius of the city, continuing southbound you next have Whiteland a more rural and true suburban setup with less lootable retail areas but many dwellings.... I am in Franklin IN ~ 31 miles from the starting area of a big riot or crime wave. I'll face the more municipal that Whiteland less than greenwood local threat but am within a 2-3 day operational radius of the greater Indy proper population potential. Absent an organized defense plan or a sense of interlocking neighborhood/LE action I would be tempted to make my way southward. It all boils down to situational awareness and having multiple options available so if the situation warrants it you can unass the AO if need be. Since I live in the north the trunk of the car always has an emergency kit in it which would keep me and mine a couple days. I live in the country at that 60 mile limit. I also have a fallback location 150 miles from the house in the woods. (I've posted the improvement photos a couple times before http://www.flickr.com/photos/89370022@N07/8271092356/ )

304- Sven Good points. This is one of the reasons I moved out of the city. I've told my friends that live in Seattle they had best get to the waterfront and commandeer a boat and drive south or to one of the islands, as Seattle will go nuts with liberal wankers getting killed by gangbangers and cops nowhere to be found (because most of them don't live in Seattle). 307 Infidel,
It's a variable but you're taught rules of thumb on unit speed in the boy scouts and army.... run an experiment watch footage of a riot... calculate based on how much looting they're doing versus their determination to move to a point and watch what happens.... I'll try to find one.... it can be higher, it may be slower but ~2mph is average. You can see mob psychology even at the flashmob level. http://www.wikihow.com/Survive-a-Riot The SAS also has "urban survival tips" and different works by former members have factoids... http://tinyurl.com/bzbwgvk Piece on studies in UK about riots... http://tinyurl.com/3uckkh7 Al Guardian piece (sympathetic) on Riot Psychology My theory on it takes the rioters if acting in a SHTF seni-organized militia mode as being as mobile as Category C troops less some organizational time. Average adult walking speed is 2.8-3.4 MPH but a riot will by nature be a non-disciplined or rather loosely disciplined crowd event...marching without a formal formation....this necessitates slowdowns and whipping by leadership subtle or subconcious to move the mass in a direction and maintain cohesion with hectoring.... the more organized the rioters are the greater the radius they can move in. I'll have some links to youtubes of rioters moving in an urban setting unimpeded and impeded. Posted by: sven10077 at February 07, 2013 12:00 AM (LRFds) 320

Don't you hate it when an actor in different roles is pretty much always playing, you know, his shtick. Robin Williams (with some exceptions), Nick Cage (wife's excellent suggestion). At the end of Liar, Liar, there's a scene where Carrey's character, rehabilitated, is with his wife and kid, and for just a moment the Jim Carrey face is gone and he looks like a decent human being. If he could play that guy...
As I recall, Yes Man was pretty good. Except, as stated, Jim playing Jim. Oh noes! Per IMDB, he's in KickAss 2. (Come to think of it, Cage was almost tolerable in KA1. Plus, he got horribly offed, so maybe Carrey will be, too.) Posted by: Mindful STILL banned on the desktop at February 07, 2013 12:01 AM (AMsS5) 323

Good neighbors you trust are the main thing. My theory is not a hard and fast rule...I am not saying it is 'word of God" I am saying I have been studying the issue off and on since 1993. It was an LP/Security concern for the contracts I worked in downtown Dayton which has had riots and was a sensible concern for Y2K in El Paso TX and in hurricane alley as Katrina proved. Rita had no looting in our area....but the cops and locals made it understood..."we'll kill you." Posted by: sven10077 at February 07, 2013 12:12 AM (LRFds) 338

444 Jake in ID We boil corn beef for 2-3 hours then add cabage for the last 30 minutes. I thought about that, but I'm trying to avoid any meal that requires using water for things other than drinking, or extended cooking times. 2-3 hours of boiling requires a lot of energy. I live less than 2 miles from both the Hayward and Calaveas Faults, so keeping a week of food on hand makes good sense. I also figure that trying out various foods that will keep for extended times also makes sense. 446 BignJames ...the fat that binds it will most likely melt and it will fall thru the grill. The can says slicing is easier if the slices are chilled first, so I figured that either the grain is the wrong way or there would be a lot of fat. The can does indeed suggest a lot of fat. Perhaps frying it, like fajitas, is a plan. I figure the taste is "beef", and the fat really adds taste, but the amount of fat may make "acquiring a taste" for corned beef just a bit difficult. Posted by: Arbalest at February 07, 2013 02:24 AM (KnKxu) 453
In my experience with canned corned beef, there ain't no grain left in that meat, it's all frickin' pureed in with a ton of beef fat.
Delicious, yes, but no structural integrity. Posted by: Lewis at February 07, 2013 02:28 AM (UB1pV) 454

Anyway, to use this product, one lays on their side, inserts the wax tube in their ear and sets it ON FIRE! Clearly the object makes a draft, similar to a good fireplace, and sucks the none existent earwax out.Seriously that's what they sold to the females of my clan. After watching one of my daughters do it, while I ridiculed and laughed at her, my wife decided it was either the stupid or she wanted to deny me the derisive laughter I was hoping for. Top that. Regarding canned corned beef, I suspect a skillet and some onions are the best route.

I'd say that Spam is much tastier than corned beef in the can. I tried a couple of different spice/cooking combos and it still was pretty nasty.

All of the recipes I find online involve baking, or maybe chilling the stuff and making sandwiches. I was hoping for something that involved frying up "strips", like fajitas, but this may not be possible. Every once in a while I decide to try to extend my dietary limits. It's tough, as I ALWAYS fail with fish and seafood (so: no more). I suppose various types of canned chili will have to do. Posted by: Arbalest at February 07, 2013 02:46 AM (KnKxu) 465

I think the whole idea of insurance liability with gun ownership is a facet of "lawfare", whereas the government does things to make your life miserable unless you conform.Yes, this is a free country, if you can afford it.
Posted by: Reader C.J. Burch writes..... at February 06, 2013 11:44 PM (Md8Uo) --------------------------------------- I was thinking about our rights and the recent decision by the government that birth control was a "right" and if you couldn't afford it, then the government would help out. Why not argue the same for guns? After all, they are actually listed in the bill of rights as opposed to birth control, so why not push for legislation that states if you can't afford a gun, that the government must help you buy it? Because quite frankly, that Barret 0.50 cal is just a tad pricey and it's my right to own one. Posted by: Darth Randall at February 07, 2013 02:50 AM (lxc0s) 469
Perhaps frying it, like fajitas, is a plan. I figure the taste is "beef", and the fat really adds taste, but the amount of fat may make "acquiring a taste" for corned beef just a bit difficult.
Posted by: Arbalest at February 07, 2013 02:24 AM (KnKxu) Arb, I love the stuff, and eat it often. Simply slice it, put it on buttered bread with a little mustard and mayo, and add some sliced 'maters. Add cheese if you want to be decadent. And the corned beef hash suggestion was good, too. Thanks AOP. I've always had BAD LUCK with canned meat, certainly straight from the can, no heating. To some extent, I'm looking for additional menu items that I can simply heat up, grill or fry on a small propane or Coleman stove in under 10 minutes, and that maintain my same standard of living. Mercifully, C-rations are long gone, but they had merit: the can could be opened, then heated up, and (given the correct can) the results eaten. One can was enough calories for someone doing a lot of moving. Posted by: Arbalest at February 07, 2013 03:01 AM (KnKxu) 476

-Canned corned beef hash will do the job. But it's better to add in potatoes and/or peppers and onions or something ... it's hella greasy all on its own. Spam may fit the bill better for you. Depends on the price point. I don't buy this kind of stuff often, so I don't really know what's typical. At the grocery store I was just at tonight, a 12 oz can of corned beef was $3.99, apparently some sort of sale price. That works out to $5.33/pound. Seems a little pricey to me. Especially as a bunch o' years ago I remember buying that same 12oz can for $1.25 (admittedly, a huge bargain, which I simply couldn't pass up, so I bought a few cans). Arb, corned beef can be eaten right from the can, but it is greasy and salty. Some way of mixing it with some carbs and veggies makes it a lot more palatable. You can also buy canned corned beef hash. Neither it nor the plain corned beef is particularly cheap.
Also look at the canned ham in those egg-shaped tins. Some of it is very tasty, and it's not pureed meat. Actually has texture. And there is canned bacon, and canned butter on the market. Canned goods will keep for years, but they are kind of expensive for what you get, considering a large part of what's in there is water. And they are kind of heavy and bulky if you have to carry them with you. But they certainly have a place in one's emergency preparedness plans. Need no refrigeration, dust and rodent-proof, withstand flooding, etc. Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at February 07, 2013 03:12 AM (673KB) 479

Make your own beef jerky.
You don't even need to buy a Ronco food dehydrator, you can make it in your own oven at low temperature. Salt, soy sauce, thinly sliced beef, black pepper if you like (also brown sugar if you like) - there you go. Posted by: Lewis at February 07, 2013 03:26 AM (UB1pV) 483

I suspect we might be shopping at the same grocery chain. AOP: Part of this exercise is to find out what canned items are worth having on-hand. I'm not worried about even a partial economic collapse (but CA is really hurting, and there are signs that things could get real stupid), but the geologic clock says at least one of the faults around me should move within the next 2-5 years, and an 8.0 is entirely possible. Then there's the fuel cost: 2 or so hours of food prep is a lot of fuel. 5-10 minutes to bring a can of chili to a high-simmer makes much more sense. Throw in some grilling time for onions, bell peppers, etc... or maybe stir-fry. I figure a propane cylinder might do 20 of these meals. 1 can of corned beef or ham looks like enough meat for one person for 3 days of hard physical labor, or 7-10 days of office work ... provided the stuff can be acceptably prepared and the remaining portion can be refrigerated. I expected the grease, but some can be drained and some can be fried out. The water is a small problem, and I suppose part of the price for a can of meat that will stay edible till mid-2017. The salt is a problem; how much will drain out with the water or fry out? Perhaps hash is the plan. Perhaps I'll try molding strips, frying them and seeing if good comes of it ... I believe this is that TheHill moment:
Wow! What a tremendous illustration of how much space is between the two ideologies. And it's not going to get any better. And waiting for "Congress, President, Judiciary" to play nice is futile. Government, by its very definition is there to limit its own activity. But that's gone now. The "governor" on this engine no longer limits the throttle. It shoots the driver in the head and loads the trunk up with Mexicans and steps on the gas. Your wallet is your only source of power.
