Sandy Hook Dad

Bumped by ace. I kind of squished LauraW's post:

Finally, we're hearing from some parents who aren't too happy that the only thing standing between their kids and violence is 'Lockdown.' Or utterly defenseless teachers.

Not yet, you haven't. But you clearly need close monitoring.

Now, imagine what had happened if, when you were a kid, some bureaucrat decided that your behavior was "strange" enough that you "required" a psychiatric evaluation.

Then you have a psychiatric history, which under the sort of provisions being bandied about now, would potentially be viewable by some gov't agency in deciding whether or not you are "worthy" enough to legally own a firearm as an adult.

This is somewhat off-topic, but this comment reminds me. When I'm in traffic and someone cuts me off or does something stupid, i tend to react with the usual, "Gah, dipshit! Pay attention to the fucking road!"

But my temper is mollified somewhat if I see the person's vehicle has a conservative-leaning bumper sticker. Or two. Or ten.

I'm willing to be a little more charitable towards someone with an NRA bumper sticker and a Gadsden flag decal on the back of their vehicle. I'm willing to chalk their bad driving habits up to a one time bad decision.

But if that NRA sticker is for NPR instead, and the Gadsden flag is replaced by an OFA logo, THEN I start shooting off profanity like you have never heard. The more hippy, progressive, granola-munching, patchouli-scented, leftarded slogans an idiot has on his or her bumper, the more likely I am to box that sumbitch in on the highway in retaliation.

Am i alone?

They also know, or find out very quickly, that speaking out doesn't pay. The MFM will ignore them, so why bother?
I saw this after the Cho incident at VA Tech. MANY students and even some faculty dared to think that the (rather new) gun-free-zone policy was a mistake. But they spoke in whispers.

72 re: "If anything, an upgrade in the system so that psychiatric records and court adjudications are accessible during a check is not a bad thing, it could have stopped Va Tech for example. That I could support."

Then you'll be happy to know that in 2008 a law was passed making it so that states whose standards of mental-illness adjudication don't precisely match the feds'--which is how the VA Tech guy "slipped through"--are required to craft and submit no-buy lists in accordance with the feds' standards, not a state's own. So, for example, court-mandated "outpatient treatment" for "anger management" or "substance" counseling gets you on the no-buy list now. It didn't before, not everywhere. Not in "red states."

Billions were "granted" to "upgrade the system" to match the new law. And the NRA supported all this, because they have no Second Amendment-related principles.

I'm surprised you don't know. The 2008 law is rather famous. It's the rhetorical origin of the "gun show loophole." Random bastards still can't access your medical (or juridico-medical) history based on a hypothetical transaction you haven't made but they say you want to.

So the law is already what you want it to be, unless that's what you want from it.

Which seems like a strange thing to want.

----

This is just such an awful idea on every front. Besides the obvious purpose of trying to limit our 2nd amendment rights and not accomplishing any limitation of crime whatsoever, this will require more federal employees (someone has to process this information), give more personal information to a federal government that already knows way too much about us, and will obviously be used for reasons that have nothing to do with guns.

So it is anti-gun, anti-limited government, anti-fiscal constraint, and anti-privacy, and doesn't solve the problem it is being asked to solve. How any Republican could ever vote for something like this is unconscionable. Even if you don't care about 2nd A rights, there are plenty of other reasons to oppose this.

168 F150. Heh.

Look, an F150 is a perfectly OK little truck, but that's what it is. A half-ton.
A car with a big open trunk. A parts runner. A lawyer truck.

I use a one-ton to go out for smokes. With a dump box.
My real truck is a deuce-and-a-half, and I don't go around town calling it big.

If you come knocking your big nuts around here, drive a god damn semi.
F150. Psschit. Hey, does it have a back seat and four doors?

169 Although thread is probably dead, one other point. Idoubt that the folks at the podium liked the Dad's lecturing tone. Well, guys, if you didn't like being lectured, maybe you now have 1/1000th of the feeling we get when one of you or your fearless leader take that hectoring tone with us when you're telling us how we bitter clingers are supposed to think and live.

Wow! That was fricking awesome!

I am betting that the MFM is quietly digging up dirt on this man. They are going to go "Joe The Plumber" on him on whatever crap they find. If they can't find any, they will make it up. How dare he defy Barry O'Swizzlestick, Supreme Leader of the Universe.

172 "You will take my ability to protect my from my cold dead hands".

Let that echo through the halls of Congress and across the land.

173 "I dressed my Barbie in GI Joe camo clothes. She had a machete. She still wore high heels."

That's seriously hot. If I weren't fuckin emasculated, I'd be all over that!

174 That's a good dude.
That's a real father.
Media: "crickets"
You wont see that on anything but Fox news. Which means that 50% of the Country will not see it.
