Happy Tuesday.

A couple of people have pointed out this Veronique de Rugy piece to me, one favorably and one very not. I tend to agree with the fellow who thinks she's whistling past the graveyard.

Now, sequestration may be the thing to do. But we should at least be honest about what's going to happen if we do it. De Rugy completely minimizes the disruption these indiscriminate cuts would cause this year by arguing that funding will largely be restored in future years. As someone much smarter than me remarked, this is "akin to arguing that it's okay to stop breathing for six straight months, because hey, we'll just breathe twice as often *next* year."

The Army, for example, is planning to simply not train 78% of combat brigades. You better believe that's going to affect military readiness. Among other things, they're also going to cut back on pilots -- even the ones they keep won't get enough flying time to meet proficiency reqs. Furloughs will be the order of the day. And the effort to ship equipment home from Afghanistan will stop.

Suggesting that "post-war reductions of defense spending are common practice," as de Rugy does, is a gloss. It avoids the real issue. These indiscriminate cuts are nothing like the well-considered "builddowns" she mentions. They won't feel like those other "builddowns" either. Not for the men and women in uniform and not for the thousands of civilian DOD employees either.

I'm not opposed to defense cuts; I am opposed to pretending that the sequester is going to be a peachy time. Maybe we have to eat this bullet; let's not act like it'll have no effect on our war-fighting capabilities. That takes the sequester from "unfortunate reality" to "dangerous self-deception."

Update: I have been informed by someone who claims to know that it is, indeed, Wednesday and not Tuesday. I, um . . . have to go. Tawk amongst yaselves.

2 States are stepping up measures to restrict the use of drones by local law enforcement. Also take a look at the photo of the “sheriff’s department” that Fox has with this article. Recall when the FBI was first proposed there was a lot of opposition to this type of law enforcement. Again, this is one of those issues that cause the founders to become permanent magnet generators. It is also why I am opposed to this “war on drugs” which has caused this type of law enforcement and which we are not just losing, we are losing terribly.

Because we are treating these criminals the same way London treats their young delinquent hooligans, by saying no-no please don’t do that. We saw what happened to London, after seeing there were no controls they tried to burn the city down. Until the stupid Democrat mayors start actually prosecuting these thugs and handing out stiff sentences it will continue and get worse.

50 So the fear of cuts to the military is the federal version of how cities blackmmail taxpayers with threatened police and fire dept. cuts?

Posted by: Invictus at February 06, 2013 07:07 AM (OQpzc)

51 That is a good main blog post.

The key point, of course, is the arbitrary and indiscriminate nature of the cuts.

Nobody actually believes that DOD can't or shouldn't be cut. Like every federal agency and department DOD is bloated, inefficient and wasteful and certainly needs to be trimmed.

Ultimately you have to keep in mind the demographics of the chattering classes. And the right side and putative right side of the spectrum is just as bad if not worse than the left. With extremely rare exceptions it's a coffee klatch and a sewing circle. Spoiled brats from the burbs. Arrested development cases. The closest they've come to the military is when they bought the "Aliens" collectors edition for Blu-Ray.

There's also the reflexive nature of various segments of the right. They're the flip side of the coin from the reactionary left. Obama now is against the sequester, so they automatically must be in favor of it. They just reflexively gainsay whatever the left says, without even thinking. Again, it's all about demographics. People with limited to no real world experience.

Kind of...the problem is that there are real ramifications from defense cuts if the political class doesn't accept that the mission capability is reduced. Benghazi was a fuck up of choice, big enough defense cuts and it would have been a systemic failure of design. Then the vicious cycle that destroyed Britain's force willstart up.

1) cuts to DoD

2) real world problems expose reduced force potential

71 Morning, ‘rons and ‘ronettes. Only time for a quick story today:

One of the fixtures for years at MGM was a man named George “Hoppy” Hopkins. He had a nominal title, but his real function was to be an idea man, coming up with casting suggestions or plotlines for movies, and he was known to collar any actor, producer or director in his path when inspiration struck: “Ty Power – A Yank In The RAF!” I’ve made ya, Harry!” he once shouted to a stunned Henry King, who went on to direct the 1941 release.

But probably his most famous moment was when he cornered director W.S. “Woody” Van Dyke (known in the trade as “One-Shot Woody” for his fast pacing and dislike of retakes) in the studio barbershop. “Gable and MacDonald,” he snapped as he settled into the chair next to Van Dyke. “She’s a singer, he runs a saloon. Spencer Tracy wants to shut it down. The fuckin’ San Francisco Earthquake! I’ve made ya, Woody!” he finished, tossing a towel over Van Dyke’s face.

The movie? San Francisco, the top-grossing film of 1936.

Hope you all have a wonderful day.

The Moonbats then and now

-Then: Afghan terrorists in Afghanistan have to be Mirandized (The Constitution governs the universe and Afghan terrorists
have rights).
-Now: US Forces should not fire their weapons at night it interferes with the locals' rest and hey look no more grim milestones!

-Then: It's illegal + immoral for the US to assassinate foreigners in
foreign lands (if anyone who likes America happens to be in the White
House).
-Now: It's legal moral and ethical to kill Americans in foreign lands!

-Then: Pouring water on the faces of admitted terrorists off of US sovereign territory is illegal, immoral, and unthinkably evil.

-Now: Gitmo, and Rendition are needed tools in the GWoT wingnutz!

I'm more of the idea that it was leaked to gauge the public's reception of it. If there was no real pushback, they'd claim it. If there was pushback, they'll quietly re-write another "updated" memo addressing the "concerns", claim that it was an older memo from the Bush administration, note that there is a newer memo that they go by, 'obfuscate' about when it was written - if they are even asked, etc...
I presume you havenoticedhow the media got it (NBC at that) even before the oversight committee's that have been requesting it for some time were able to get a copy of it...

A heads-up: I've encountered a leftard lie of a talking point in two different places. Once was in meatspace, and once was on a different comment board.

The lie was that had the recently passed farm bill not passed, the price of milk would have doubled because the new bill uses taxpayer dollars to keep the price of milk low.

That is not only bullshit, it could not be more opposite of WTF really happened. Had the farm bill not passed, the law would have reverted to the 1949 "permanent" law. That fascist New Deal era leftover was a central-planning price support law that would have forced the feral government to buy shitloads of milk from producers at a grossly inflated price thereby driving the price of milk to double what the free market would set.

The farm bill's effect on the price of milk was due to its preventing reversion to this price-supports policy scheme.

So long as these fuckers spout their lies without shame or consequence, it's no wonder why we cannot have nice things.

School officials ordered the students back inside, locked the gate and called police."

She is not excused because she was too stupid, or too insane, to actually chamber a round.

I suspect it's the "teachers, police, and firefighters" argument. Basically, they want to make it so painful to do what needs to be done that no one is willing to do what needs to be done.

Not that such big cuts in Defense spending would be fun in the best of circumstances, but I suspect they'll do as much damage to the Military as possible.

157 Concerning thedefense budget, I've been there on a small scale and have the T shirt for burning through money.

I was in the meetings and typed the orders at the end of the fiscal year to shoot millions of rounds of 20mm ammunition, to melt the barrels of the guns, to fire off dozens of heat seeking missles, to leave all the vehicles running for days to burn fuel and a dozen other stupid things just to make sure everything in inventory was gone so that we would get a similar or increased amount next year.

Could a 10% reduction hurt us? Of course, if it is the intention of those making the cuts to hurt readiness to make a point. However, if the subject is could the military cut by 10% without any problem, the answer is absolutely yes.

I thank the maker every day that boy is well "boy" and not "girl."

I was raised to treat females with courtesy and respect until they had made quite clear they were unworthy of the term "lady."

This was instilled by my father whom I've made light of here for his many marriages.

I take no glee in the destruction of gender roles, and fear that the degradation of chivalry is a designed byproduct of feminism.

There will be horror stories of how troops will be fed 30% less, how the heat will be turned down to just above freezing, that Navy ships will be adrift 30% of the time and anything people used to having a blank checkbook can think of.

Ummmm....no, that's not what “the story” is going to be, because there is “story.” There is only reality.

It's going to be in the neighborhood of 30% due to the way Congress has fucked up budgeting for the last few years. We're operating under a Continuing Resolution based on FY2012, which itself was a CR based on FY10. So here here is DoD operating at FY13 rates, based on a “promise” from Congress to get this right and that sequestration will not happen.

So DoD was expecting to be made whole, and it’s not looking like it’s going to happen. So when you spend 50% of the budget in the first half of the fiscal year - because you were authorized to do so - and then are hold halfway through the year to ratchet down hard to what is effectively FY10 levels....yeah, the cut it going to be about 30%.

That’s just this year. No telling what happens in FY14.

They haven't decided, yet. They don't even meet to discuss the matter until today- I imagine they'll start about 9A Central Time (the national HQ is in Irving, TX).

And they've been under "pressure" (mostly from the Left) for decades, at least. I'm not surprised they're considering caving, just to make the issue go away.

The three options on the table (that I know of) are:
1) Status Quo- no Openly Gay Scout Leaders. This is the one I would prefer.
2) Full Retard- Openly Gay Scout Leaders are now approved. I hate this idea. There are already groups that allow this- why can't the Boy Scouts keep their traditions?
3) "Middle Way"- The National HQ approves OGSLs, but leaves it up to each individual troop and (more importantly) their sponsoring organization (normally churches) to decide if their specific troop will allow OGSLs.

That 3rd one is problematic, because what do you do when two different troops do something (like summer camps or whatever) together, and one allows OGSLs, and the other prohibits them? Among other problems.

What's happening is that the incoming Chair of the BSA is a proponent of allowing gays toact as Scout Leaders, so he's pushing this through - even after all those people acted to defend the long-standing BSA decision to not allow gays in those roles. In a lot of quarters this is being seen as a betrayal. It also has the potential to remove a lot of funding, as faith-based organizations will probably limit or cancel donations for FY14. At a minimum, this puts a lot more fund-raising pressure on the local councils and the individual scout troops/packs.

FWIW the local councils will have the decision as to whether or not to allow them, which is drawing ire from the usual GLAAD-type suspects (the lobby wants it to be a national policy, not local). My particular council will probably allow it, and even if they don't the Pack leadership has pretty much telegraphed that they'll allow it even if the council rejects the proposal.

School children killed in Newtown, CT. National mourning, the beginning of a “national conversation” on gun control.

NRA propses armed guards in school. Left goes full-moonbat. Oh noes! More guns! Can’t have that!! You people are INSANE!!! NRA is pilloried in press.

School Board of Newtown, CT votes for more armed guards in EVERY school they have.

Response from the left? Crickets.

Absolute moral authority, baby!

Addiction went to 50% and the society collapsed completely. The Japanese walked in, and took over, and eventually a communist dictator came to power. You wreck a society, you always get a dictator.

Effective range is about 500-750 meters. The 120 version does not have a fuse.

The old 105mm round used to have a time delay fuse and you could set it from “super quick” (meaning once it's outside the muzzle) out to about to about 1,000 meters.

I can't be a girl, and I can't fill all of a significant others' needs all the time.

Where it got complicated for me is the whole "family" thing. The way she who shall not be named was wanting to play the game I could never see a stable family life in my future for the kids. You need to keep up appearences and all that.

But I am still having pain.. so this things didn't work as I had
planned. I am not giving up though. We will figure this thing out.

I completely understand.

My wife just had foot surgery this past Monday and she'll be out of action, mobility wise, for the next 3 weeks. That means I have to be Mr. Mom and nurse for that time, possibly longer. She has all her pain meds so they are helping and she has all three seasons of Downton Abbey I downloaded for her. Tonight, I have to give her a bath without getting her right foot wet. That means I have to carry her up the stairs and then back down again. I may require back surgery by tomorrow morning.

289 Funny, I looked at it in exactly the opposite way. Incidents of Male
Adults molesting Male Children (In both the BSA and the Catholic Church)
are examples of why you do not ALLOW Homosexuals to get anywhere near
children.

Oh, certainly rational people thought that. That may have even been the BSA's purpose in publicizing the review- "Hey, look, even we're not perfect. Do you really want to add to the chances Something Might Happen?"

But the Liberals aren't rational (or, at least, don't act rationally) and therefor are using it as a "See!? They claimed they're a safe place for your kids, But They're Not!"

324 I was going to start this comment with the sentence "I wonder if most people realize the extent of the DoD", but that would be stupid. Only a tiny percentage have any idea of how wide a swath our defense budget makes.

In one example, after WWII our representatives (in concert with concerned machine tool manufacturers and machinist unions) decided we need a stockpile of machine tools to be ready just in case there was another world war.

The government set out to purchase new equipment and certain used equipment for refurbishing. This continues to this day. Some of the equipment still being purchased has no function in modern manufacturing, with the government being the only customer.

Picture the warehouse in the final scene of "Raiders of the Lost Ark". Then multiply that by a number of facilities around the country. Near Ft. Leavenworth in Kansas there is a vast underground facility where old machines once used in the Packard Motor plant are lovingly (and expensively) rebuilt from the ground up.

It would be hard to imagine someone possessing a grasp of the full extent of how our defense department spends money. It's time to get a handle on it.

337 I suspect it's the "teachers, police, and firefighters" argument. Basically, they want to make it so painful to do what needs to be done that no one is willing to do what needs to be done.

Not that such big cuts in Defense spending would be fun in the best of circumstances, but I suspect they'll do as much damage to the Military as possible.
Posted by: AllenG (Dedicated Tenther) Channelling Breitbart at February 06, 2013 08:02 AM (8y9MW)
Fun, no.Doable? Yeah. If the agencies and branches got to choose their own cuts I think we could see a soft landing. It's roughly 1/6th of the DoD budget if memory serves but that doesn't mean it could be achieved. But it's pretty clear (from what I know firsthand) that Obumbles isn't just trying to do as much damage to the military as possible, he plans on making the cuts as obvious as possible meaning 2 things 1) They have to hurt our general readiness and 2) he's specifically going after things that have an instantmultiplier effect in the economy. So if an agency were to look down and say "well we can travel less, buy out some retirements, cut this program, pare back this one." and make it, things would work, and I the general effect on the economy would be, as minimal as possible.Instead we're seeing mandatory 20% Furloughs for no other reason that I can gather than "this will be obvious and will shut down small sectors of the economy."It's criminal. And Frankly I wish they'd just engage in layoffs. Because then my wife could start looking for a new job. As it is, she's making the same amount of money as if she had been fired, but she still has to go into work so she can't actively search for a new job.

Posted by: Gregory of Yardale at February 06, 2013 09:35 AM (QXlbZ)

344 These cuts need to happen.
First, the DOD is wasting - literally wasting - 10s of billions of dollars a year. If the rest of the government is wasting 100s of billions a year - and we know they are - why do we think the DoD is any different?

Second - a smaller military is good idea now more than ever. I don't trust this President and it's only a matter of time and the right 'crisis' before he turns the military against the citizens.

Posted by: Michael Moore at February 06, 2013 11:30 AM (x7g7t)

345 There was a time when our leaders led (insert hysterical laughter here). Do you remember "Doctrine's?" Like: The USA will have a military large enough to fight one major war and one minor one- at the same time. That would have been "the USSR, plus North Korea" or something like that.

Agree with it or not, it was something.

Now? We have nothing.

Are we the world's police, or aren't we? And, either way, what does that mean?

Barack Obama wouldn't know how to even ask this question, let alone answer it. He has neither the intellect nor the interest to understand RealPolitik and our role in it.

We don't even know what our military is for anymore, and yet we're going to reduce training, flight time, etc.? I'd love to ask some actual questions, such as, "wouldn't it make more sense to have 5 fully trained Divisions, than having 10 untrained ones?" or something like that - but why bother? The question can't be answered unless it's framed against a goal.

Are we isolationist? There's a formula for that. You build certain types of ships/planes for that. Are we interventionist? To what degree and scale? Do we still consider ourselves Europe's Defense? How about Japan's, vis'a'vis China?

"Sequester without an objective." Like everything else this stuttering clusterfuck does, it's heavy on drama and completely devoid of brains.

347 #292, I know this is a dead thread, but the 40mm buckshot load is the most overrated and inaccurate POS I ever tested. Muzzle velocity is substantially below a 12 gauge 00 load (tested side by side at 15 meters, M203 and Mossberg 500, Baghdad, 2006), and the shot spread is just pointless. And I had been so happy to find that shit in the turn-in bin at the Division ammo point, too. I was much happier with the Mk262 5.56mm ammo
