| Overnight Open Thread (2-5-2013)On The Eternal Grievances of the Left There are certain people, Dianne Abbott being a good enough example, whose existence is only validated by telling people to do something different from what they are. If everyone's a model of Victorian primness then the shriek will be that free love is a necessary part of civilised society. If everyone is indeed practising free love then Victorian modesty is the only valid more for society to allow. It's not that either is better or worse. It's that, by definition, whatever people are doing is wrong and they must be controlled to do the other. After all, Kip Esquire's Law does require that someone should do the controlling and there are those who do insist they are in the vanguard of those who ought to be. What is being controlled and to what end is much less important than the controlling itself. Kip's Law: "Every advocate of central planning always - always - envisions himself as the central planner." Fen's Law: "The left believes none of the things they lecture the rest of us about." Well these two laws plus the constant gnawing fear that something somewhere somehow might be unequal do account for a solid 85% of all leftist policies.
[Spanish] Woman: You can't say Americans are not more violent than other people. Ted: Maybe you'd like an analogy. Well, take... take these ants. In the U.S. view, a small group, or cadre, of fierce red ants have taken power and are oppressing the black ant majority. Now the stated U.S. policy is to aid those black ants opposing the red ants in hopes of restoring democracy, and to impede the red ants from assisting their red ant comrades in neighboring ant colonies. WaPo To Introduce a Real-Time Fact-checking Service The Washington Post has announced a prototype news application called "Truth Teller", that displays "TRUE" or "FALSE" in real time next to video of politicians as they speak. The Knight Foundation-funded program automatically transcribes speeches and checks the statements against a database of facts. From the article: "For now, the early beta prototype has to be manually hand-fed some facts, and thus only works on topics it has been specifically designed to recognize. Since Congress has yet to pass a budget, and financial discussions are prone to widespread lies and misstatements, Truth Teller is being piloted on the issue of tax policy." Here's a demo video of it in action: But based on how cocksuckerishly partisan PolitiFact has been with its 'fact-checks' I have about a 0% confidence that 'Truth Teller' will tell much truth when when it comes to Republicans. An Interview With Harold Ramis On the Lama: You've spent some time with the Dalai Lama. What's he like? And how Animal House might have been: Was it what you had imagined? Take the challenge. Web site AntiSemiticOrNot.com lets you choose who hates Joos more from a random pairing of Joo non-lovers. Here were the choices that first popped up for me: Hmm...that's a tough choice but I'll have to give Carter the edge here. Paul may hate the juice but it's more of an intellectual kind of hate while Carter hates them from his gut and that brings a certain passion and intensity with it. The World's Fastest Rugby Player What if you're super-fast - but not quite good enough to win an Olympic medal - and want to play a sport professionally? Well Carlin Isles who runs the 100m in 10.13 seconds decided to take up rugby. Here he is playing with the US National Team against New Zealand. At this point he had only been playing for 3 months yet was able to out-maneuver and simply out-run everyone else on the field. Teh Tweet! The New Feudalism, Heard Through the Grapevine
Raisin farmers are facing a $650,000 penalty unless they hand over almost half of their crop of raisin to their Lord Seigneurs the Federal Government. Aside from the wisdom of defending a program that originated from the paragon of regulatory sanity {/sarcasm}. The main problem, is that this is a violation of the 5th Amendment which requires “just compensation” for takings. But based on how cocksuckerishly partisan PolitiFact has been with its 'fact-checks' I have about a 0% confidence that 'Truth Teller' will tell much truth when when it comes to Republicans.
There's going to be a bit of a problem with this. Often times it takes them a while to figure out how to find the evidence that what the Republicans said was false despite it being true. Though they'll probably just not waste time and call everything the Republicans say false. Posted by: buzzion at February 05, 2013 10:08 PM (GULKT) 15

Kalneva. Jews have historically fitted a useful niche - scapegoat. They refuse to totally assimilate into the local culture, small in numbers, and worse of all tend to be very successful.
So when things go sour like crops failing and such, its the Jews!!! Projecting the failure of self upon an outside actor, thus avoiding having to admit how screwed up the self is. Posted by: Anna Puma (+SmuD) at February 05, 2013 10:20 PM (x7WAu) 54

Well the person doing the presenting based it on the FEMA course and it had some good facts about active shooters, defined as terrorists going into a public setting and attempting to kill as many people as possible. Couple of good facts, one was that an active shooter cannot be reasoned out of it--in contrast to someone who is targeting a specific person or persons. Another was that they are basically cowards and do not expect resistence and when meeting resistence will often fold. And, that they are usually not good shooters, hitting less than 50% of the targets they are aiming for. Another fact was that in 98% of the cases the active shooter anticipates that the outcome for him (and it is pretty much always a male) will be suicide.

Anna Puma, yeah that was one of the suggestions, that if you are not armed (which would be the case in most school settings) even something as simple as throwing a desk at the shooter may deter him. Also, locked doors deter them initially, and the goal in a school setting is to buy time for the police response. Most active shooter scenarios are over within 8 minutes.

Until the surrender, then they declare their true allegiance. So when the Soviets finally make it to the town, they invite the agents for their reward. The reward being they are executed.

It's been going on so long that it's become an unthinking cultural thing. People hate the Jews because... that's what everyone does. Posted by: Colorado Alex at February 05, 2013 10:13 PM (hpDVh) I expect part of it is because they are generally successful, and people always have envy. Probably another part of it is that people generally don't approve of people of another religion. Even in Christianity there has been long ongoing denominational conflicts. Even wars. I would have thought that modern prosperity and communications would have alleviated most of that, but sadly no. Posted by: DiogenesLamp at February 05, 2013 10:33 PM (bb5+k) 102

There is such an investment in our “Capitol City” by both parties that they are now both working to protect the funding. Yes, all politics are local and the DC metro area is local to itself, except it’s constituents can tax the rest of the country.
Now, not only do we need term limits for our politicians, but we now need a rotating Capitol City so it is harder for the political class to put all their efforts into one location. Posted by: Islamic Rage Boy at February 05, 2013 10:41 PM (e8kgV) 131

Harley Cowboy.
Abraham took to his bed his slave Hagar since it seemed Sarah, his wife, would never bear a child. Thus was born Ishmael. Then G-d intervened and Sarah became pregnant. She gave birth to Isaac. Then there was division of opinion and Abraham sent Hagar away with her child Ishmael. Islam claims legitimacy via Ishmael. The Qu'ran is full of stories of Abraham and Ishmael worshiping and refitting the Kabaa. Nothing about Sarah and Isaac. Posted by: Anna Puma (+SmuD) at February 05, 2013 10:45 PM (x7WAu) 150

I would never rub it in that I attended the Super Bowl. I mean, sure, I was sitting in section 527, row 12, but I would never gloat about that.

Posted by: lou's a girl" Using the "Gun Control" logic that we've been pummeled with since the tragedy in Connecticut: If you follow local news, a huge amount of the beatings, sexual assaults, and killings of children, are perpetrated by Mom's boyfriend. Therefore, any man who gets involved with a single mother should have to pass a background check. Oh, and be registered with local gubmint officials. If even one child's life is saved, it would be worth it. I don't really condone this, but it is the same as what the anti-gun people propose. Punish everyone for the criminal behavior of a few. This is what I get for opening a book on the shelf at random. Who needs I-Ching?
"Theologians who have pictured God in Man's image, through a failure to rise to a worship of God in spirit and in truth, have sometimes fallen into the spiritual error of imagining God exerts His irresistible power to make His own will prevail over Man's - either by ruthlessly overriding it or by craftily bending it to conform to God's will unawares. This picture of an iron law of God the Tyrant lurking under the mesh that God's guileless creatures label 'Chance' has been painted for us by Bossuet." - pg 381. A Study of History by Arnold J. I was asked by one of my many bosses why organic milk isn't being produced more, since it's so expensive. Those lines don't intersect. I think it would have to be about 20 dollars a gallon before producers would want to jump through all the regulatory hoops to do it. I have no idea why organic milk is even produced/purchased. before everybody, the Amaleks tried to get rid of the Jews. They are descended of Esau, who never got over not getting his father Isaac's blessing in favor of his brother Jacob. Thanks to fucking central planners, I can't use plastic grocery bags anymore. Sure reusabr bags spread disease, and paper bags are just as bad for the environment, but it made our betters feel good, so that's what's important. Nevermind that I shop.once a week for my family of 6, and carrying in 30 paper bags will take half an hour. Never mind that I use those plastic bags to throw out dirty diapers. Nope, the communist fucks would rather I buy plastic trash bags and waste my time hauling in paper bags. Thank God I live 1/2 a mile from the city limits and can escape to the suburbs to shop. Too bad that means leaving my favorite store and driving (zomg, global warming!!) 15 miles round trip. Fuck the fucking fuckers. Posted by: Lauren at February 05, 2013 11:46 PM (wsGWu) Ah yes. Every little liberal hell hole thinks that enacting this is gonna save the world, just like making the grocery stores using paper bags 30 years ago would save the world. Funny who this plastic bag ban will hit hardest, women and the poor. At any shopping mall, look at the women getting on the bus and what they are carrying. It's groceries, in plastic bags. Bags that can get wet and not break, but our liberal betters have told us that reusable bags are the best, so now these people will have to buy bags instead of necessities. Never mind that the baggers at grocery stores have no idea how to bag groceries anymore, I'm 100% positive that those paper bags won't be a problem. None whatsoever. Piling on Lauren's rant - I prefer the paper bags. They hold more stuff more securely than the effing plastic bags. But the baggers, trained to load only three things (four, max) into the plastic bags tend to do the same with the paper bags.

Sigh. Checking and Bagging is a lost art.
*sighs with you* My husband is so tired of my tirades against the lack of bagging training. Really? You are going to put all 12 cans in one bag? And then put my bag of frozen peas in with the shampoo? Drano goes with meat? They don't train these people. And if they are trained, they need to be fired. I long for places that let you bag your own groceries. Plus, I always arrange them on the belt the way they should be bagged. Doesn't fuckin' matter. One time, at Costco, I had the guy loading the belt (I was doing it just fine, thank you very much) go back and get me a new bag of spinach, after he plunked a brick of cheese and a tray of meat on top of it on the belt. Hubby was chagrined, but that guy wasn't there the next time. I ask you, Morons? Asshole? Or consumer not wanting to go home with bruised spinach that's worthless? And I know he went back and brought back the same fuckin' bag of spinach. It was the principal. Posted by: kalneva at February 06, 2013 01:04 AM (S+/pH) 453

Antisemitism baffles me, too. It's been going on for centuries, but I really don't know why Jews are convenient scapegoats.
The Jews are universally hated because Christ came from the Jews. It is a spirit world thing. Think about this; just two nations are considered covenant nations USA and Israel. Meaning in our foundations was a recognition of a relationship to God. Now ask yourself why these two nations that have done more good for humanity are the most hated in the earth. The Jews have far more Noble Prize winners in medicine and real sciences in proportion to their population than any group by far. The USA has fought for freedom for others (now a thing of the past) than any other people in the history of the world. If you do not believe there is a God, you might begin to understand there is a Satan, too many things in history line up to a scenario where a invisible power is pulling the strings for evil purposes. In LA County the rationale for banning supermarket bags was that they were taking up a lot of landfill space. A study found that only .3 of a percent of landfill usage could be attributed to the bags, and most of those were serving as containment for trash and pet waste as opposed to the bags being merely tossed out.
It has gotten so frustrating trying to know what stores will have bags and which ones require you to bring your own. I know of two Vons locations less than a mile apart that are different in that respect. You have to really know the neighborhood to know one is in an unincorporated area. My mother has had a problem with nose bleeds her whole adult life. A specialist once warned her to don't walk but run from anyone who suggested cauterization, as he could only support that in case where the conditions was actually life threatening. There was a winter about twenty years ago in which I kept getting nosebleeds after a round of sneezing from a cold but once I got past the cold and the humidity changed it went away on its own. Are you on any anti-clotting medications? That can really crank up a minor bleed into a messy situation. Posted by: epobirs at February 06, 2013 01:31 AM (kcfmt) 483

As the Mrs was just saying, we married each other. We needed no State approval or registration. We still appreciate that it was just a contract with each other. And God, of course. As I wrote in the article I linked, it can be tricky, if it comes to divorce, if you didn't make it publicly clear you were married, and one party lies about it. Bad baggers? Try Kroger, the absolute worst. We take the reusable ones plus some softsided coolers for the cold/frozen stuff. We even divide our order on the belt with the cold/frozen stuff separate from the general merchandise. A real problem in CA is people trucking in loads of containers that were sold and their contents consumed in NV. From the 'What Could Possibly Go Wrong?' school of governance, the fund that takes in and pays out recycling fees has been deeply in the red in recent years as a result. I know if I lived on the CA/NV state border, as my brother did for a long time, I'd take an absurd pleasure in buying my groceries on the NV side so I could cash in the recyclables on the CA side. That people with large trucks have found it profitable is simple economics of the sorts politicians are incapable of performing. Posted by: epobirs at February 06, 2013 01:39 AM (kcfmt) 489

California has -- partially as a result of the infamous Lee Marvin "palimony" case, completely stopped the recognition of "common law" marriages. Even before this, however, you were not married under "common law" if you did not hold yourself out as married in an "open and notorious" fashion (this has nothing to do with "bad" notoriety -- it was the same in squatter's rights cases. You can't just hide out on someone's land and say, "ding, three years! It's mine." -- you have to get your mail delivered there and answer the front door.). Case in point, the BH and I have studiously avoided referring to ourselves as "Mr. and Mrs." or "husband and wife" for the two decades and such that we've been together -- which has been useful at times. Oh, and Mindful -- "common law" has a specific meaning in English-style jurisprudence. It means "everything that's been decided with precedent, so the state will recognize it as valid, but that hasn't been legislated and passed into law." So there are things like "not having to testify against your spouse" that were done in the Colonies because they'd been done since 1066 in Britain....but were never enacted by a state. 472 --- When the membranes in your nose get dry, the capillaries break easily. Try applying Boroleum with a Q-tip inside your schnozz --- both nostrils, twice a day for a few days, then every night. Do this regularly during the winter or during/after a cold, anytime your nose might be irritated. (If you are in a dry environment, you may have to do it year round.)
If that doesn't slow then stop the problem, you may need cauterization. Posted by: Margarita DeVille at February 06, 2013 02:05 AM (C8mVl) 511

I do ok with AdBlock Plus and DoNotTrack (along with IE Tab + and tinyurl generator). The only thing I get is when it's ready to do an update, the old version's performance turns to crap.

Posted by: The Dude at February 06, 2013 02:04 AM He's not objectionable, as far as actors go. I used to sort of dislike him, as a kind of flavour of the week, H'wood type, though he was reasonably effective in F+F. But, with the passing of time and compared to the "actors" that get leading parts in movies these days, he shakes out a-ok. Posted by: otho at February 06, 2013 02:10 AM (yBF/9) 515

Thanks for the replies. . .no meds, was doing a ton of aspirins (12-16/day) but quit those a month ago. Tried sleeping with a humidifier, didn't seem to make a difference, but work/home are VERY dry... guess I'll wait it out. Another reason to wish for the end of winter and arrival of spring. I'm just like a woman, keeping TP or kleenex with me at all times....

regarding mentioning perfectionism as a weakness, it matters who is making the claim. If you are a perfectionist and working on reforming you will understand and explain the problems with perfectionism much differently than a poseur who wants to sound cool.

regarding mentioning perfectionism as a weakness, it matters who is making the claim. If you are a perfectionist and working on reforming you will understand and explain the problems with perfectionism much differently than a poseur who wants to sound cool. The problem with that sort of response is that identifying "perfectionism" as a weakness demonstrates a complete lack of self-awareness. It's like any variation on "here is a supposed weakness, which is actually a way to sell how great I am." You need to be able to identify an unqualified negative in yourself. Something that does not have a significant "upside." By identifying that you recognize a true flaw, you demonstrate (1) you are actually trying to improve yourself; (2) you are humble; and (3) you aren't going to spaz out when I point how much of a fuckup you are. If you want, you can say you are a perfectionist, but don't try to sell that as your "greatest weakness" unless you follow it up with "I am such an obsessive perfectionist that I am incapable of working on any other projects until I've already blown the original deadline." Posted by: wooga at February 06, 2013 03:42 AM (jgnqm) 530
1) Nosebleeds - humidity, hydration, have vitamin deficiencies checked (vitamin K mentioned above) and mineral deficiencies. Some people have a harder time absorbing certain nutrients than others. It sucks horribly, doesn't it? Look into the Boroleum thing above and other ways to keep the inside surface protected - they will probably feel as funny as hell and affect breathing a little. Verify they are safe - some things are very unhealthy to inhale.
2) Hitman movie - I'd call it a competent B movie. Nobody really stood out, the action scenes were decent with occasional flaws, it's definitely an action movie. Worth seeing if you like that but don't expect "art" from it. Posted by: Merovign, Dark Lord of the Sith at February 06, 2013 03:58 AM (bxiXv) 531
What are you writing, Merovign?
Posted by: ConservativeMonster at February 06, 2013 01:58 AM (7um7O) Working on two novels, one in the "heavy editing stage," several short stories, one I'm nervously getting ready to submit. I've been out of writing a long time and hoping I'm going to make a career of it this time - I admit that's kind of like the teenager who thinks he's going to play professional sports, a longshot. I will be shamelessly letting people know when I'm going to be published again. Mostly sci-fi, BTW, some of the shorts are "urban fantasy" and aimed at a themed anthology instead of just individual stories. Posted by: wooga at February perfectionism is an unqualified negative. If you really are a perfectionist then you really do not give a damn about anything other than getting it perfect. of course it is likely that you will never achieve perfect so learning to aim for good enough, is a key thing for perfectionists. I could honestly say that my "greatest weakness" is an inability to let go. One time, the BH and I were on vacation in Puerto Rico, when we stopped off at a nice place to have dinner. I excused myself to wash my hands and noticed a payphone in the hallway.
"Well, I'll just check in with the office....", I thought -- and discovered that they were "line down" in production. So I'm ripping apart the schedule and frantically reallocating, and finally getting a lid on things -- when the BH grabbed my free ear and yanked me away from the phone. I'd left her sitting for over half-an-hour.... Posted by: cthulhu at February 06, 2013 05:41 AM (kaalw) 536
Good morning. I am up early because once again Coast to Coast had on medical charlatans who said that all health problems are caused by eating acidic foods, and that the cure for this is to drink and eat only alkaline vegetables and no meat.
I actually heard this jerk say this would cure cancers and that deteriorating vertebra would regenerate once you went on this diet. He has a web site and I am so damn mad I am sending a letter to the station manager this morning. I found his web site so I have proof of what claims he is making. There are so many people with health problems and people like this make a nice living fooling people, many of whom could DIE because of his crack-brain claims. Also, of course, he will be at a "health freedom" expo in Long Beach, California (and also in Chicago, might I add). Daggone it! These people are no better than the faith healers! #540 sven, this is a stealth campaign. That Noury has a lot of crackpot truther-type stuff and is a lefty. However, someone who allows 3 hours to crackpot claims like that with NO cross-examination is doing nothing more than providing an infomercial and I wouldn't be surprised if he gets a cut of the sales of "water ionizers" and MIRACLE HEALTH RETREATS TO ITALY. If that were Rush Limbaugh having people on like that, he would have already been arrested for practicing medicine without a license. Dang it makes me mad! "What is your greatest weakness?"
Gawd I hate that type of interview that everyone seems to have gone to. And that is a hard question for me to answer and be honest. Why? Because my lack of ability to work well with someone who doesn't understand that you owe an employer 8 hours work for 8 hours pay is my biggest weakness. Tell us of a time when you used communication to solve a problem with a coworker. Never. "Why not?" Because you can talk till you're blue in the face to the kind of person I described above and it will do no good. And if I'm working with good coworkers then, no problems to solve. Gabe,
Disruption caused by sequestration should be embraced by us as a feature, not a bug. The only way we are going to get the comfortably numb to wake up is to slap them hard, repeatedly. If sequestration is the first slap, so be it. Let's spread the pain instead of keeping it all to ourselves. Posted by: Hari Seldon, Psychohistorian at February 06, 2013 07:29 AM (B3eax) 548
This is not news.
The Chastity League in Orwell's 1984. In 1948 the real commies were all about free-love, in a world where that was frowned upon. In 1984 the book, the commies were about repressed chastity, in a world where everyone was hard up. Orwell did this on purpose. It doesn't matter to the State whether or not sex or chastity is good for the individual or for the community, it matters to the State that IT gets to make personal decisions for the individual on every intimate choice. The same for recycling garbage, or carpooling, or volunteering at inner city middle schools, or pediatricians handing out gun safety brochures. It doesn't matter to the Machine whether or not any of those choices are effective, it only matters that they made the decision for you. The massive invasive tax code and welfare system exist in their current form, instead of a guaranteed minimum income system, so that the State can continue to micromanage every transaction of every person in North America.
