| DON'T PANIC. HOPE IS COMING!SMOD will soon be with thee. Three of them, actually. First up, the latest images of Comet ISON, the most promising of these messengers of bliss and salvation, courtesy NASA's Deep Impact spacecraft:![]() ISON's tail is now bright enough to be imaged by amateurs, with the comet registering just around +14 magnitude. It is on track to be a spectacular, once-in-a-lifetime (fingers-crossed, that may take on a new meaning) sight. Comet PANSTAARS should be visible to Northern observers in four more weeks, though it's maximum brightness has been downgraded considerably. It's orbital path also places it way out of the Earth's danger zone range, but who knows what blessed turn of events could transpire once it approaches the sun. Lastly, a surprising new contender has emerged, Comet LEMMON: In recent months, a third comet has been brightening more rapidly than expected, and now it’s nearing visibility to the eye alone. It’s Comet Lemmon (C/2012 F6), shown in the image above, discovered by Alex Gibbs of the Mount Lemmon survey in Arizona back in March, 2012. At that time the comet was tough to catch even through large telescopes – much too faint to be seen with the eye – at five times Earth’s distance from the sun. But, like the Earth and the other planets in our solar system, comets are bound in orbit by our sun. And as Comet Lemmon has swept into the inner solar system, it has brightened at a rapid rate. If this brightening trend continues, the comet might become visible to the unaided eye this month (February, 2013) through May. LEMMON won't be visible naked-eye in our hemisphere if it's current orbit and specs hold, but will make for a spectacular site in an amateur telescope. Of course, it could become really spectacular if things get weird around the sun, so cheer up: we could all die in a merciful blast from uncaring space before the rest of the Republican party collapses. And, if not, anyone with a big instrument will have a helluva year. Comments1

I forget the name of the last comet (circa 1997) that came around, but I could see it with the naked eye. It wasn't super bright or big but if the sky was clear you could easily pick out the little comet tail. It was pretty neat, it would be really cool if this one is better. The thing about comets is they hang around at least a couple of days so the odds are that you'll have at least one good night to view it. Posted by: Ed Anger at February 05, 2013 08:26 PM (tOkJB) 52

SO a comet is heading to earth with an impact trajectory.
Obama calculates after watching that michael bay movie that he can kill two birds with one stone. So he loads up all of the USA's nook-you-lar arsenal on one big ass new sapceship in the shape of his campaign logo named BO-1 ofcourse and orders it fired it at the assteroid that looks remarkably like Michelle Obama's fat posterior only magnitudes larger if that is possible, BO-1 never having been tested leaves the launch pad and of course blows up mid atmosphere taking out the east coast and ripping a gigantic hole in the ozone layer, leading to massive skin cancer outbreaks. Obamacare ofcourse to the rescue. Turns out Paul krugman calculated the trajectory comet trajectory and the comet actualy flys right on by. Obamacare bankrupts the country as a result of the massive cancer outbreaks and millions of peopel suddenly needing treatment but liberals praise Obama for the fact that preexisting conditions cant be denied or somthing. Now disarmed bankrupt and missing its east coast, the USA ins invaded by China and we are put to work in factories at 5 dollars a week making cell phones for the cubans and venezualens. Without a Deterent from the US, muslim extremism explodes and the british monarchy is replaced with a caliphate. Liberals carve obamas face into rushmore. Every Islamic country regime now has a nuke. Teh Jews are screwed. North Korea discovers transwarp technology. Aliens decide that now is the time to wipe out the human race. Obama is ofcourse in his secret super duper elaborate bunker during the invasion and only him and Michelle survive the alien holocaust. They are captured when they come to the surface to forage for lobster and cigarettes and as the last two remaining members of the human race are taken to another world to breed and propogate the new human race hereafter known as Homo Bamians... Yeah things could be worse. Posted by: jeremiah Gosh Darn Amerikkka wright's Sock Puppet at February 05, 2013 08:36 PM (+OTLF) 88

Egypt’s Coptic Christian pope is coming out in strong opposition to the nation’s Islamist leadership, calling the new constitution discriminatory, especially toward Christians, and openly criticizing President Mohammed Morsi for religious remarks.
Pope Tawadros II, who assumed his office in November, said the Islamist constitution “bore a religious slant, and that in itself is discriminatory,” in an interview with The Associated Press. Mr. Tawadros also condemned Mr. Morsi’s characterization of Christians as a minority. “We are a part of the soil of this nation,” he said, according to AP. “We are not a minority when it comes to value, history and the love of our nation.” Christians comprise an estimated 10 percent of Egypt’s population, AP states. Eric Hoffer had some related comments about his stint on a WPA project (think it was the Skyline Drive). He said the road building crew would come to a ravine or creek and someone would pull out a pencil and notebook and do some figuring. Pretty soon, the crew would have a plan of action and start moving rocks to build up a roadbed and bridge structure. Before long, they were on the other side and moving on to the next stretch of highway. Today, they would be halted for months while the EPA was studying the bullshit darter impact. Not-so-random thought of the day: Regarding amnesty--I want our illegal alien friends to be forever banned from gun ownership, as they fall under the prohibited categories via the Gun Control Act of 1968, and all of the rest of he categories are basically lifetime bans with no chance of time off for good behavior.
Application for documents by illegal alies will be an admission of inability to ever have a gun, as it will be an admission of having been an ineligible person. I look forward to this not being part of the bill. Posted by: Hell on the Wabash at February 05, 2013 09:06 PM (GgOl0) 176

Same-sex couples to get some military benefits
By Andrew Tilghman - Staff writer Posted : Tuesday Feb 5, 2013 15:56:41 EST The Pentagon will soon offer additional military benefits to same-sex couples, marking the first major expansion since the September 2011 repeal of “don’t ask, don’t tell,” a defense official said. Those benefits likely will include an array of perks and privileges currently extended to heterosexual spouses, such as access to military bases, commissaries and family services, according to a defense official familiar with the plans. Joint-duty assignments for same-sex, dual-military couples also may be on the list. But the Pentagon will stop short of offering family housing, health benefits and with-dependents housing allowance rates to same-sex couples. Those benefits are defined by federal law, and the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act still prohibits the federal government from recognizing same-sex marriages. It's so good that money is no object for gay couples since the rest of the defense budget is being gutted? Posted by: Wilt the stilt at February 05, 2013 09:08 PM (9Bj8R) 182

Just found out we have a catastrophic sewer problem in the pipes under the house, with old iron pipes that have basically turned into iron oxide, i.e., rust. Low bid: $5100 and that's not including patching the tile and maybe having to replace the new sink cabinet that I installed in fucking December.

Well it was a combination of things...yes the Military utility was a justification and it is hardly "an excuse" my problems with it are that the feds willfully refuse to build durable highways, they use them for coercive control of the states, they are made for political not economic reasons, they are not self-funding anymore.
The main economic impact was the ability to readjust logistics and efficiency in services and supply chains leading to increased economic integration..... the downside is that it has led to urban decay in non competitive areas, of course 'happily" Free Shit Army was born in the wake of the realignment so "there's that".... I'm a federalist....I favor small govt but I know that the Interstates *should* work and i know they do not.... you laugh bitterly to keep from screaming Posted by: sven10077 at February 05, 2013 09:21 PM (LRFds) 204

OK, so I actually have a smallish (8inch diameter I think) Bushnellrefracting telescope. And my new house has 0 streetlights. But I lost the little mirror attachment that comes out of the end in a "L" shape (so you can use the eye pieces) as a result it won't focus now (being that I'm about 6 inches or whatever off the focal length.) Anyone know where I can pick up a replacement? Posted by: tsrblke at February 05, 2013 08:38 PM (GaqMa) There are a number of companies that sell telescope parts and components. It sounds like ou're describing a "star diagonal". Search for that on the internet. Orion Telescopes is a good source for parts. BTW, an 8" reflector is a fairly moderate-sized but respectable telescope. An 8" refractor is fucking enormous and probably costs more than your car. With every house purchase, we have learned an expensive lesson. We're now on House #5, so it adds up to an MBA in credits, I believe. Latest lesson is "have a plumber scope your pipes before you buy, so you can at least get some credits when the inevitable happens." The good news is that we hate the tile in the bathrooms, and the previous owner did a shitty job setting them, so no great loss there...other than the time and aggravation it's going to take me to re-do it. It was a small comet, but passed close to Earth. In 1997 Hale-Bopp was a bigger comet, but it didn't come so close to us. However, it was visible to the naked eye for about 9 months, which broke the record set by the Great Comet of 1811, which was apparently mentioned in "War and Peace", although I haven't read that book. I think that would be a good plan. Probably cost more and probably worth the cost. Only problem I see with that plan is a dishonest person in any of those categories could take advantage of the buyer by trying to sell the buyer his services. Of couse the buyer can always get a second opinion. Posted by: Ronster at February 05, 2013 10:00 PM (JgkPs) 293

I can't speak for others, including guys I used to work with who refused, and one who got his wife pregnant when they had grown kids because he was chicken shit, and she is an OBGYN. I had it done when I was 40 after boy #2, at wife's behest. The "procedure" was done at 2PM. I was back at the office by 4PM, walking like I just got down off Trigger after a 1300 mile cattle drive. Only real aggravation is when the hair grows back. Like wearing burlap BVDs, oh and when your 5 year old smacks you in ground zero, which usually hurts anyway. Comet Hyakutake in 1996 and Comet Hale-Bopp in 1997 were treats for Northern Hemisphere observers. But there have been a couple of good ones in the Southern Hemisphere in recent years: Comet McNaught in 2007 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/C/2006_P1 Comet Lovejoy in 2011 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/C/2011_W3_(Lovejoy) This photo of McNaught on January 20, 2007 is the most beautiful comet photo I've ever seen: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/a/a0/Sat_comet_WEB.jpg Posted by: rickl at February 05, 2013 10:33 PM (sdi6R) 316

I grew up with Peri Gilpin (Roz on Frazier). She's a sweetheart and not at all like her character. I'm close to one of her sisters and I usually see Peri when she comes to Dallas.
I'm not a TV watcher and had only seen Frazier a couple of times until my wife started watching back-to-back reruns last year. It was a bit strange at first because I've never thought of Peri as a famous person. Posted by: Name withheld at February 06, 2013 12:57 AM (1DpQI) 319
