BREAKING: Obama Calls For A Delay In His Sequestration Plan

Of course. The budget must never be cut. It's a physical impossibility.

Odds of GOP objecting to this in any meaningful way? 0%

Remember this terrible, no good idea was Obama's from the start. The GOP agreed to it too. But they will all pretend it was imposed on them by some mysterious outside force and now they will be very serious about finding spending cuts to off set the debt ceiling hike from 2011. Perhaps they could form a joint House-Senate group to find the cuts. They could call it a "Super Committee". Nah, that's crazy, it would never work.

Update: Obama has a 1:15 event to talk about sequester and avoiding it in...say it with me...."a balanced way".

Update 2: Is this the beginning of a GOP victory and Phillip Klein's "Maneuver X"?

Color me skeptical. Obama and the Democrats don't want to cut domestic spending, period. And they want to raise taxes. Why exactly would Obama trade defense cuts (which are the only cuts Obama wants) for actual entitlement reform which is poison to the Democrats?

Maybe I'm just too down on the GOP but my guess is Obama simply wants to keep domestic spending growing and if that means giving the GOP an out on defense cuts, he's ok with that.

17 Drew,

President Clusterfuck has been setting himself up for this without any GOP objection in a way that's just batshit crazy.
There are several DoD'ers on this here blogthing, ask them.

I'd say even the biggest defense hawk would agree that cuts are going to be necessary, and yet, the Sequester is the wrong hamfisted approach.

Still, the agencies that I know of found ways to make it work (travel cuts, programatic cuts, early retirement buyouts.) On the whole, it wouldn't have been awful.
YET, the higher ups at the DoD are demanding furloughs (which more than a few agencies said they could completely avoid.)

Furlough's are not good, they'll have negative effects on our ability to run intel and infrastructure necessary to defense. So why do them when they're avoidable? Because it's going to make for a media hayday. "Look at all the jobs we're going to effect! Imagine the economy." And yet it was completely avoidable without changing the sequester.
Yet no one's going to call Pancetta and the Hamfisted Clusterfuck out on this.

Overspent, underperforming...at least the F-22, while expensive, performed to expectations, as I recall. But the proportions of cuts through sequestration to defense compared to entitlements has just never seemed right to me, esp. given national defense IS something the gov't is constitutionally mandated to do. And let's face it, the ME is in fire, not getting any better, NK is well, being NK. And we've still got China - their imminent collapse has been imminent for 10 years... I suppose on one hand (short-term), my wallet is rooting for sequestration to be delayed or at least retooled - got three kids to feed with a 4th on the way. A friend of mine in the navy says this, and I quote him directly:

"Saw
my first presentation today outlining in fairly good detail the cuts
coming both with a Continuing Resolution and Sequestration in
March...holy hell! One that sticks out to me is cancelling all
"maintenance availabilities" for the fleet in the third and fourth
quarters. This is sort of like running your car into the ground on a
daily basis but only performing the maintenance you can do yourself in
your driveway and foregoing taking it to the dealership.

Also,
we will see a MAJOR decrease in deployments except for two carrier
strike groups already out that will be "extended indefinitely", a
reduction of around 3000 shipyard jobs, and maybe reducing federal work
weeks from five days to four the rest of the fiscal year.

Four of nine carrier air wings will stop flying completely in March,
and it will take 9+ months for them to return to normal readiness at
2-3 times the cost.

Things, they going to be a-changin' soon!!

For those that want to see funding for the military cut, you might just get your wish."

I agree in principle, but handing the power to choose those cuts to a megalomaniac determined to both leverage everything for political gain while screwing over the military is a disaster.

Again, Agencies have determined the best way forward for them. Someone (likely Panetta or O'clusterfuck himself) have overridden them to go for the biggest political effect.

Let's let sequester happen, but let's turn the power to determine what exactly is being cut over to the various agency heads, we can't have it in Barky's hands. (Don't change the values though.)

You're delusional. The only chance we've had in a generation or more for real spending cuts- however painful- is sequestration, and we just fought a battle over taxes- which resulted (IIRC) in higher taxes (shocka).

No, it's not a "victory" of any kind to agree to tax hikes for spending cuts- especially when those spending cuts will be a) at some point in the future (that is: never), b) in the few areas the Federal Government should be spending money, or c) both.

No. Either real spending cuts (targeted or across-the-board) or sequestration.

Schools are experts at bullshiting people about what will get cut if they don't get additional money. Anyone who has ever served or been around the military could cut 30% without any problem.

the tax revenue wonít be forthcoming. Republicans already gave Obama tax revenue in January, and unlike at that time, the pressure is now on the White House. In January, tax hikes were coming without any other action. Now, spending cuts will happen without any other action. Thatís whatís known as leverage, which Obama seemed to enjoy when he had it six weeks ago.

Ed Morrisey - 2/5/2013

The deal did not include any resolution on either the sequester or the debt limit. If there is a silver lining for Republicans, itís that they have successfully delinked tax rates and spending issues in this fight. The next round of bargaining will deal only with government spending, and House Republicans will have the debt ceiling as a powerful card to play.

Posted by: Republicons are in the dustbin of history at February 05, 2013 11:12 AM (KfEiI)

He didn't 'save the entire economy from a depression'. Bush took the necessary steps to forestall that particular nightmare before Obama took office. What Dear Leader did do, however, was pay off his constituencies with an $800+ billion stimulus that didn't stimulate anything. Every measure your beloved One has taken, especially Obamacare, has been an additional burden to an already overstrained economy. Real unemployment hovers at or around 14.2%. Inflation has been (largely) successfully hidden, but not for much longer. Billions of dollars have been 'invested' in green energy industries which also happen to be owned by major Obama campaign contributors.

Barack Obama is the most disastrously inept President to sit in the Oval Office since the traitorous, seccession-sympathizingJames Buchanan. Even the much-maligned Warren Harding and his crooked cronies comprising the Ohio Gang managed to avert economic calamity during his term.

Oh, and that bit about 'hating Obama'? That's rich coming from the Left. You're the ones who claimed Bush and Cheney were personifications of evil. You're the ones who wrote plays and made movies fantasizing about Bush's assassination. You're the ones who opposed the Iraq and Afghan wars until Obama was running them. Despicable, all of you. Part of me hopes you and yours do overreach (as you always do)and attempt to dispense with the Constitution altogether. What would happen after that would be at once terrible and deeply satisfying.

A 10% cut should not be a disaster, and, if it is, it's just an indicator of decades of bad decisions and waste. The high-ranking military leadership apparently assumed infinite money would always fall from the sky. Cuts are going to happen and keep happening. If you're in the military, you should be looking for ways to fix this from the inside.

"Cuts" will all be on "future" procurement then?

Great.

I just know the guys I met at Polk who were there were less than thrilled and of the mind that the Clinton action was an anomaly for the mission window.

Airborne ops were not my thing, and the macro level is not something I shout about much nor has it ever been here.

You comfy with the Mali mission? Sooner or later this little game of spinning pie tins with fewer and fewer clowns will get people killed or blow an op. I'm dying for a real wargame to show whether or not we can do even one theater action to ~86-90 standards.

Republicans have very little leverage, and if they go scorched earth they will lose the House and filibuster ability in the senate, and then this country is in real trouble. So the House needs to husband their resources and only act when they have a chance to win. That should be obvious. Its easy to kick your legs and scream and carry on, but the American people have made it pretty damned clear who they want to believe in. So FORCE Obama to own up to his policies and show that his math is a total lie. Thats a victory. Then in the next election you give the nation an alternative. Thats how a republic works. Being outraged is not a strategy. Sure, we could shut down the government. And then lose the House. Thats what will happen, start living in the real world.

165 I was always for sequester. The federal spending needs to be handled with a chainsaw at this point.

Anyone who calls for Obama's impeachment is a damn racist!
IMPEACH OBAMA= I HATE BLACK PEOPLE! That is what it equals!
I've learned Obama never has admitted to being a Muslim. and I've learned that you scumbags are racist, bigoted black-hating homophobic azzholes! I am ALWAYS right! Anyone who hates Barack Obama is a brain-dead racist klansman!
Obama was born in Hawaii. Obama lived in Indonesia for 3 1/2 years when he was 6-10 years old. He then returned to Hawaii. He was mistakenly given a Connecticut SSAN by the Social Security Dept. when he was a teenager trying to obtain a summer job in Hawaii. This happened due to the close digits in Hawaii and Connecticut zip codes, of which social security numbers are assigned. Of course you do not want to be CONFUSED WITH THE FACTS, but perhaps others will read and investigate. There is no legal requirement for Presidents to disclose their college records. Bush didn't either until a newspaper leaked it so shut the hell up!
he's not a straight up Communist or even Marxist. Even Socialism is not the same as what he is doing,
You don't father two children if you're a homosexual. he isn't evil. Obama is is not a traitor!
you ARE wrong for calling the President a liar, you pathetic, disgusting racist! He has been a good president (jobs on the rise, stock market looking better and had the Navy SEALs take out Osama bin Laden). And no, he's not a dictator!
President Obama is a nation-saving charismatic highly intelligent kind man who does not deserve to be verbally assaulted by the likes of you or whomever you quote (i.e., bratboy schizo Beck, self-loathing heroin addicted Limbaugh, and their ilk). Anyone who hates this man is a digsuting Anti-American racist!

"my guess is Obama simply wants to keep domestic spending growing and if that
means giving the GOP an out on defense cuts, he's ok with that. "

Obama's planning on bringing down the economy, and he doesn't care if that means the defense contractors get to hang on for a few more years.

169 This is the moment when I became anti-military.

I've always defended it as the only plausibly "legitimate function of government," last on the list of things that need to go--and repressed the knowledge that it's done by scumbags. But your tough-talkin' welfare-gangsta parasite friend here has snapped me out of my delusion.

Zero the budget.Posted by: oblig. at February 05, 2013 11:44 AM (cePvDude, I'm in the military and supposedly I'm 'anti-military.' There's waste everywhere, to say nothing of the PC leadership and dumbass missions. (Clark and McChrystal are the norm ---not anomalies.)Cut deep and hard.Hopefully it'll even reign in these hapless missions to institute universal health care and affirmative action in third world shitholes, too.
