The Harvard cheating scandal winds down [Purp]

Collaboration / Collusion

Background stories here and here.

Last year's Harvard cheating scandal, after protracted navel gazing by the institution and childish rationalizations by some of the students involved, is apparently winding down to a decidedly tawdry and unsatisfactory conclusion. This resolution lacks catharsis for the institution and avoids imposing genuine accountability on the students involved.

While many students involved, by any generally accepted standards outside Harvard walls, obviously “cheated”, none were permanently expelled and sent off to wander the wastelands of less prestigious institutions in shame. Indeed, one gets the sense there was no shame involved at all here, only irritation over the inconvenience of being caught (Which is disturbing in itself. Some Psych grad student could probably write a pretty good PhD thesis about this incident)

One does not maintain the high standards of an institution by debasing them and allowing those who tarnished them to remain or return a year hence. These “students” were adults, who made adult choices, not 3 year old children who haven't developed enough brain function to distinguish between right and wrong.

  • The cheating in question involved a final exam.

  • The exam was “take home”.

Some of the students claimed that the rules for the exam were unclear since the rule prohibiting collaborations was only one sentence long, and since they were accustomed to working collaboratively manufacturing group generated answers for a final exam was OK.

On its face this is a preposterous defense of the sort one might expect 3 year old to offer after being caught with a shirt full of cookie crumbs, chocolate stained fingers, and an empty cookie jar hidden in their bedroom closet. Seriously, Zamora's Twinkie defense was more robust and credible. I'm sorry, but being pathetic and whiny is not exculpatory, its just pathetic and whiny.

[PUT MORE RANTZ HERE] ...I'm done ranting, these people disgust me.

26 so i have a question or three...

How do liberals square there there is no god therefore i hate those warmongering evil christians and conservatives and they must be crushed humiliated and ostraciszed...

with their total support for those peace loving dont call them terrorists islamic extremists who would take away their rights and stone behead oppress and hide under burkas the gays those that deny Muhammad and any outspoken women?

If liberals are so OMG GAY RIGHTS ATHEIST'S RIGHTS WOMEN"S RIGHTS, how can they be so lock step and supportive of those that would take away their rights to even breathe the air we dirty republicans want to constantly pollute?

Its a mystery to me...

Perhaps ANDREW can explain this conundrum with his highly evolved skeet shooty world view and knowledge of all things international.

Or perhaps one of you lesser morons can take a wack at it.

Better yet can a journolista ever maybe ask a liberal this question?

Police sources say the coach was walking the two girls to their cars when two men allegedly approached and one pulled out a gun and grabbed him by his chain necklace.

The coach then pulled out his gun and shot both of them, according to sources.

The man who shot the attackers was 70 years old, according to police.

One of the attackers was found dead in the median on Lafayette Boulevard, and the other was taken to a local hospital, according to police sources.

68 Unfortunately this is the mentality of kids. For the last 13 years, I have worked around teenagers (I do IT work for a school district.) Their ethics amount to "as long as I don't get caught, I've done nothing wrong." This is fueled to a large extent by their parents. Parents are astonishingly quick to defend a kid who has clearly done wrong. Everything is a loophole.

A recent example: The high school keeps the outside doors save one locked during the day for security. BEtween classes, a teacher opens each door to allow kids in and out as they change classes and closes it again when the bell rings. My office is right next to one of the doors. A few days ago, I heard a very loud banging on the door. I stepped out to see a group of students standing at the door. I opened the outside door to remind them that pounding on a door earned them 2 days in D-hall. One of the assistant principals was approaching on their side and said she would handle it. She opened the door and let them in and found out the name of the girl who had been pounding the door. Later, she called the girl down to her office to inform her of the punishment. She opened the student handbook and showed her the "pounding" rule. The girl's immediate response was, "This says during class. The bell didn't ring yet." To the assistant principal's credit, she replied, "Do you really want to go that way?" The girl was not happy but left. The assistant is fully expecting the mother to show up to argue over that.

That's the mentality. I often put it this way; When we were kids, we weren't really scared of what the school could do to us; we worried about what our parents would do. Now, they don't worry about what the school will do because their parents will do nothing and in fact, attack the school for them.

As Sayet describes later in his speech, there is only one moral rule in the Leftists world: Discrimination (aka making distinctions between and among people, places, things), is wrong and must be attacked.

They don't allow for that rule to be 'wrong.' It's self-evident to them.

Don't think they start with 'A or B.' They begin and end with 'Only A, Always A, and nothing else.'

72 Its pathetic how these institutions have devalued their product. Having a degree from these places means nothing now. Why should business pay a premium for a debased product? The rigor left academia a long time ago, and it won't come back until after the collapse.

73 Why would anyone need to cheat at Harvard?
Look at our most famous "graduate" and ask: could I perform at that level?

$300,000 and a yes answer to the above question will net you a Harvard sheepskin.

If you can't answer yes, then the $300K will get you one anyway.
Hurry, prices are increasing daily.

What's Harvard's response - take their time "investigating", allowing the little fucksticks to "write their responses down" and then deciding on what to do. And the excuse that the guidelines were only one sentence long, while in other courses they had "a paragraph or a page" telling them what they could/could not do? Buffy, Muffy and Biff must be some really stupid kids to not go and ask the prof to explain what he/she would allow.... and the prof was stupid for not acting on this crap sooner (looks like it happened throughout the entire course).

I wonder how Preezy Choom Choom and Mooch were able to get through school, other than the obvious AA reason? Neither on of them strike me as being real high on the SAT scoring system... probably had some white or Asian kid doing their homework for the entire time they were "students". But, I guess when you have such an esteemed colleague as Liawatha on your staff, and your name is Harvard, people shouldn't question such things as "ethics" or "honesty"...

124 Arent you already supposed to be brilliant or something if you get into harvard?

Define "brilliant."

Tossing aside legacies and affirmative action, you need to do well in high school, perform well on the SAT, and have good extracurriculars to get into Harvard.

Now, I'm not one of the idiots who go around saying the SATs don't indicate anything about intelligence. They do.

However, if I told a bunch of people that someone scored a 4.0 in high school and was in the top 2 percentile points of the SAT, they'd just say "wow, that person did well in high school."

Slap on "Harvard" in there and a bunch of the same lay people would say "ZOMG, brilliant!"

It's the same thing. If that's what you mean by brilliant (and chances are it isn't), then they're brilliant. That's not to say there aren't some brilliant people there, but on average? Nope. They are smart on average--sorry, I have to admit that. The problem is their brains are often far outweighed by their arrogance, thereby nullifying what good they can do.

A smart guy who realizes his limitations can be very useful to have around. A smart guy who doesn't realize his limitations can also be very successful, but only with a decent amount of luck. A smart guy who thinks he isn't merely smart, but Matt Damon in Good Will Hunting can get himself and you into a serious amount of trouble. He can also justify cheating. After all, everybody else must be cheating or his brilliant ass would be doing better.

Harvard will have to start offering a class in 'Coverup 101', in the event that they get caught red-handed.

Possible lecture topics for 'Coverup 101' classes:

--- Excuse-Making. Your best defense is a good excuse!

--- Deny Everything. There is no amount of Proof that cannot be denied.

--- Everyone is Doing It! Group guilt is a valuable tool.

--- Play the Race Card, Whenever Possible. Even 1/32nd minority ancestry is useful.

150 GGE, same here. If I can ever liberate it from the mud. The rain ruined all rescue plans for now.

Just had a complete stranger come up in his big old pickup asking if I needed help pulling mine out of the mud. I said 'no thank you.'

He asked again by saying "I could hook up to your rear bumper."

-visions of rear bumper getting ripped off flashed through my mind.-

Again I told him no. After I said the ground was still too mushy he finally left. Geez.

151 How do you cheat on a take home exam?

Harvard kids must be damn smart to figure that out?

152 114 don 't you point the gun upwards in skeet shooting? Or did they just glue one to the side of a tree for him?

Posted by: mallfly at February 02, 2013 03:07 PM (bJm7W)

He waited until it landed.
He then noticed it wasn't dead, just wounded by the fall, and mercifully ended it's misery.

Mooch cooked it.

Other things that bother me about that 'Preezy Skeet Shoot' photo:

-- The smoke. ...It just doesn't look right...it looks like steam shooting out.

-- Barky's right hand, is cradling the barrel...not gripping it, like he would be if he was actually firing the thing.

Posted by: Zombie Ted Kennedy at February 02, 2013 04:38 PM (IDSI7)

180 Back at State U a poli sci prof used to give out the questions on his final exam about a week before it was held. The answers involved writing essays that called for laying out facts, deriving conclusions and defending your reasoning.

None of this multiple choice crap.

Thing is, you had to write out those answers from scratch in the classroom, not at home.

The smart kids developed and wrote out their answers, then re-wrote them several times. By exam time, they knew their stuff. But if you tried to wing it, as most did, you were doomed.

I wonder how many Hawvid courses operate that way??

Posted by: Jim Sonweed at February 02, 2013 04:44 PM (tycwK)

181 Why would a school that hired Elizabeth Warren be concerned with cheating?

Posted by: fused at February 02, 2013 05:37 PM (PnNAy)

182 The most brutal tests I had in grad school were take home...because there were no books in print that had any viable answers for what was asked.

If you didn't have a solid ability to analyze requirements and synthesize original viable solutions, you weren't going to do well on them.

Posted by: @PurpAv at February 02, 2013 06:22 PM (J6hHs)

183 I was in my thirties in graduate school and paying my own way. I wanted to get my money's worth and I wanted to show what I could do, so cheating was not even on my radar. I started thinking seriously about integrity a little later. Eventually I realized that only things you get or achieve honestly have any meaning.

184 Took the tour of Harvard when Teh Missus and I were in Boston. The two tour guides did little else besides excoriate and ridicule various buildings on campus. I kept thinking, "Douchenozles like this are what Harvard's cranking out? No wonder the country's screwed because all these asshats graduate and immediately go work in DC... where it's exactly the same."

Posted by: sans_sheriff at February 02, 2013 08:36 PM (vge4w)

189 I don't get it, they had all the books in the world and the internet to boot, yet they still had to cheat on a take home exam. The fact that a large percentage of the basketball team was caught up in this scandal speaks volumes to the caliber of the "Harvard students" in this particular class.

Posted by: gasss at February 03, 2013 02:28 PM (MFuKa)

190 I doubt there was malicious intent by the students. Pretty much once you get into Harvard, you get an "A" for showing up. That's the bigger problem, outside of the lousy education the students get there.
