Conservative voters are still out there.If a somewhat well respected Republican leader leads us to a new small 'l' libertarian party, conservatives and a lot of libertarian minded young voters, including some Democrats will abandon the hollow party. The Democrat party only has one core principle left, hating Republicans, and everyone knows it. Maybe Rand Paul, maybe some Ross Perot without the crazy will show up. I've been a Diet Mtn Dew addict for years. I started getting concerned about all of the weird ingredients and studies that showed diet drinks actually caused you to crave unhealthy foods. I stopped drinking DMD Monday night. I changed nothing else (kept lots of coffee, eating what I want, drinking gin, etc.). No more hot flashes while sleeping (hey, what... I'm in my 40s, it happens). The coolest thing was that, every morning this week, I woke up feeling GREAT. I didn't realize that I hadn't felt good until I felt GREAT. I'm off the diet drinks.

A lot of "new" interstates are just conversion of a US highway or state route to interstate standards.
Building actual new road is rarer. Though Mitch Daniels in Indiana managed it. Built most of I-69.

Building new and useful highways is the only way govt infrastructure spending works, paving over an existing road is pointless. The 58 has had several revamps over the past 20 years I'm not sure what else they could do to it.

I would recommend you stock pile enough to help your neighbors. You are going to need help to hold on to anything you can if a starving horde comes after your food. (Which is what will happen if the economics go to shit.)

I dont know why 1 year, its been recommended goal as long as i can remember. My folks tried to maintain that level of stash and it came in handy in late 70s when AT&T experienced huge strike for about 6 weeks. Family of 7 got through it pretty well without gov help

I dealt with the tornadoes in my area almost 2 years ago. No power for 10 days. I took care of my neighbors. That said, if things get bad, really bad. I have somewhere else to go. I don't trust anyone around me. I'll bug out.

Here's another ray of sunshine...I got to Big Box Store early enough today (I usually do my grocery shopping around 5 or 6 AM on Friday mornings) to get to the ammo before anyone else. I was nice about it, I only took two of the 3 boxes of .45ACP. I missed out on the .223, but fortunately I have plenty for now. 85gr FMJ, not round-nosed though, I usually look for 230gr round nose.
I also reloaded my last 99 bullets, 230gr JHP, and there are almost no .45 bullets to be found now. Everyone is out of everything everywhere, but I have plenty of .45ACP...for now...
If anyone has a Mosin keep in touch, I have enough 54R for the average Russian peasant to re-fight WW2. We will have to pre-arrange meeting points for the revolution...

But, I did buy that over-priced rifle, have reserves in the pantry, stored sheet copper and pipe at Dad's shop (and I've been watching Moonshiners - and have the recipe), have revisited and moved to forefront the "how-to" books (in the eventuality the interwebz ain't available) and, we do have "go-bags". But, that's all very minimal.
We'll see what the future holds. But I'm really hoping, and praying, that my little bit of "emergency preparedness" is rendered moot. In our lifetime...

One of which looked like a puppet doing a PSA for the post office.One quickly realized the puppet was a guy's junk with a little hat on in and some Sharpie work.

As for prepping-hell yeah. I admit to using coupons to build up a stockpile of stuff. I am nowhere near the ladies and gents on the show, but I still have managed to shave 30-40% off our grocery bill, and create a two month supply of non perishables while still putting some money in the bank. I'm not working now, so I have to do something.
Actually, a handy site for learning how to build food storage is prepared lds family. I'm not lds, but the suggestions on the site are pretty good, and manageable for tighter incomes.

I agree about FEMA as they are part of the government and their track record speaks for itself. The problem is that people think that a lumbering government agency should come to their rescue immediately and the red tape and logistics make it a Herculean task to say the least. People, like our forefathers/mothers were very self reliant and neighbors took care of each other. One thing FEMA does do well is their website for home preparedness.
They will also send to an organization (church, school, business) free checklists and guidelines on what you should have in your home if you are taking care of elderly, disabled, pets, etc. I have to give them credit for that - but your point is well taken

We were able to get that through mail prescriptions ( I think it was express scripts) but we were living overseas, and it was very difficult getting our meds in country.
Any chance you could have an increase in travel for work? You might be able to use that as a reason for a larger supply at home....

True. i've had one for years and it comes in handy when we get ice storms down here (GA). However, it is a bitch to keep enough fuel for it (100 gallons at one point, which would be 2 months at 3 hrs/day).

And that is why you probably didn't know about Bush having a dog. Its because he was actually Bush's pet. Whereas Obama's dog is merely a PR prop. When he is out of the White House you will eventually hear about them no longer having the dog, and some former staffer having him. I think Clinton kind of did the same thing with Buddy, being more prop than pet, but since he's actually human (though a poor example of one) he actually ended up liking the dog.

The Mormons, as I understand it, are just required to store a year's worth of wheat, honey, oil and salt. That's not really practical though, unless you rotate that in with your regular groceries. The trick is to buy the things you normally buy, but buy extra. Add some of the bulk freeze dried stuff and some MREs for emergencies. There are some good sites with info on how to get started.
Of course, I used to think I was prepared with a 25 pound sack of brown rice and 25 pounds of pinto beans. Better than nothing

Not for very long. I've been reading about how ethanol ruins engines several times today.
Natural gas, Methane, Propane are your best choices. For that matter, Wood gas is easy enough to make, and it has been used in the past. Get good dry wood to start with, and you can produce a pretty good product.
If you are not familiar with it, look up the term "Wood Gas." I've been thinking about building a wood gas generator myself, but currently i'm working on running everything on natural gas.

We have the engineers, the cowboys, the military types, the farmers, ranchers, oilfield workers, the manufactures, and basically the heart and soul of the nation.

I know this is to far down for anyone to read , but I must say I always loved that song "Is that all there is". Seemed like after a couple tours in VNam, and getting back to the world - finding that the bizerkos had started taking over-it seemed prescient.
However, there is a way to fix this. We MUST take back the media, at the very least let no more than 30% liberals be involved- because that's all there is. We could be saving this country before the next election.
After all, it's only FAIR. And everyone knows how fairness is important to the libs.

It can still be ran on Gasoline. Use the NG till it no longer flows, then switch to gasoline. When that goes, then you have to either go to poop methane, or wood gas.
Wood gas is really not a bad idea, though I wouldn't want to run an engine on it long term.

I like the way you think. There are a lot of things on my "list" that I won't afford ever. But I have considered how I will get them after TSHTF.
Machinery makes a lot of sense to me, there's a berm I have envisioned about 200 yds from here, but it wouldn't be polite to do that YET.
Hotwiring sounds like a trial and error thing that can be picked up during OJT?

Incidentally, I have had interaction with 3 of the people featured on the show, either directly or indirectly. One of the women in the first season I ran into on a prepper forum; she did a big Q and A session and stated that they were told by NatGeo to pick a particular event that they were prepping for from a list. That was one thing that struck me as odd, since preppers don't typically prep for any one event...especially not something obscure like the Yellowstone Caldera. The other two were the guy from TN whose doctor got him committed (I used to be in the same amateur radio club he's in) and "Big Al", the songwriter in Nashville. I got pretty shithoused with Big Al at a Jeffrey Steele showcase. Had no idea he was a prepper, and I wasn't one at the time.

Picked up my spanking new Sig Sauer P226 .40 S&W today. Even down here in south Texas the stores are picked clean of the good stuff, so I ordered this over the eeevil internet. Went to my local friendly gun range/FFL and picked it up and put about 50 rounds through it today. Man is that a sweet gun.
I've had a Sig P220 .45 for years - so many that it has "Made in W Germany" stamped on the side. West Germany! This gun has been the best, most reliable gun I personally have had, so I was willing to drop the cash on another Sig.
Although the ONT is DOOM, I had a good day at the range today. And some Shiner Bock (several, actually) after cleaning the guns makes it an even better day.
Screw the JEF.

A huge stockpile is a good idea, however, I would recommend having a cache at home and in at least one fallback position.
You also need a meaningful supply in a go bag in the event you need to leave your primary location for whatever reason.
Now here is the advice - make sure you have a lot of high fat foods, especially in your "bugout" supply because it is calorie dense and provides long-lasting energy.
I have been in some survival situations and learned - the hard way that what you need and crave is fat .

Depends on what you're looking for...to whit, I don't live there anymore. I'm now in GA, took a job down here. Singing was paying the bills, and the last job I had in Nashville, working at a gun store was great, but paid $9 an hour. So I rejoined the professional world and had to move to do it (I work in defense contracting). There are jobs in Nashville, I just didn't have the skillset for any good ones, and the lower end jobs are fiercely competed for by the 50,000 people trying to get famous.

Sorry, no such thing for vehicles, etc. That's Hollywood crap. And hot wiring doesn't get you past the steering lock. Some older ignitions can be "drilled" yo get past that but if the key has a transponder that does you no good either.

Don't underestimate 7.62. There's a BMP-2 on display at Camp Shelby, MS that was captured in Desert Storm. It's full of holes from an M240B. Granted, I don't at what range the 240 gunner was hitting it from, but it likely wasn't within 300m.

I've seen what a .308 and a 7mm does to a deer. Stopping power isn't an issue except at long range, moose sized game and larger, or armored vehicles.

I am not thinking it is a necessary or anything more than a "nice to have" but it is a capability that not everyone has. I would like something of an advantage to fall back upon. there are a lot of guys that have had more time with a 7.62 than I have so getting into "duel" with someone that has the same tool is a disadvantage. having something with greater range and power evens thing up for me.

hey, I appreciate that advice and the discussion. I am not looking to be argumentative but I have been looking for a couple of people to bounce ideas off of, perhaps even a foil. I do not think it is the first thing anyone needs and I am in agreement with your list of recommendations. my inclination is that a .50 is a lot of money to spend on a niche weapon, however, it is not entirely wasteful a it does provide capabilities I do not have and most people do not have.
so, in a list where everything on your list was already secured, in some quantity, do you think the capabilities of a .50 cal are useful in situation where you were concerned about a zone approximately 500m on a side?

True, but not near as much fun. In my world Barret = woody...AND a .22 doesn't reach out to 1-2k with any accuracy or umph if it gets there.

indeed, a fellow I know was grousing about how much everything sucks over drinks and strippers and a couple of guys in cheap suits with bowl cuts showed up out of nowhere, said "hello we're from the government and we're here to help." I looked away for only one second and when I looked back they and my friend were gone.
