Despite Public Claims that Hagel Was Heckled by Evil Republicans, White House Aides Privately Admit His Performance Was "Somewhere Between Baffling and Incomprehensible"

Chuck's not a strong thinker.

Dealing with Iran is complicated, but President Obama’s policy on the question of whether a nuclear-armed Iran could be successfully “contained’’ – the way the Soviet Union was during the cold war – is simple.

His answer is no.

But in the weeks of preparation for his Senate confirmation hearing to be defense secretary on Thursday, either no one explained that to Chuck Hagel, Mr. Obama’s nominee for secretary of defense, or he forgot it. And so on his first outing, Mr. Hagel fell immediately into the trap that Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton and several other administration officials have complained about in recent years. He became the latest official to send what many inside the administration fear has been an inconsistent and confusing message to Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamanei, about whether the Obama administration would, if there was no other option, take military measures to prevent Iran from possessing a weapon.

“It’s somewhere between baffling and incomprehensible,” a member of Mr. Obama’s own team of advisers on Iran said on Thursday night when asked about Mr. Hagel’s stumbling performance on the question during the all-day hearing.

I'll say one thing about that -- Hagel's answer really is Obama's answer. Obama plans to allow Iran to have the bomb, and then try containment; he's lying for political reasons.

If Hagel's answer on that was incomprehensible, it's because the policy he's trying to parrot is incomprehensible. And dishonest.

The liberal New York magazine also admits Hagel stunk the joint up.

The nomination of Chuck Hagel was a giddy moment for a small cadre of intellectuals eager to shift the foreign-policy debate in general, and the Democratic Party’s foreign-policy thinking in particular, to the left. The Atlantic’s Steve Clemons, a “realist” advocating a return to Nixon-Kissinger foreign-policy-making with little regard for human rights, pounded the table for Hagel’s nomination. Peter Beinart called Hagel “the New Eisenhower” and predicted naming him “will be the greatest blow in years to the culture of timidity that dominates the Democratic foreign-policy class.” Clemons predicted the Hagel nomination would be a cakewalk: “The GOP rightly or wrongly has had its cannon blast over Susan Rice. They can’t do it twice.”

As it turned out, the Hagel nomination has been a fiasco....

Hagel repeatedly ran away from his own statements, at one point explaining that he wished he could “go back and edit that, like many of the things I’ve said, I would like to change the words and the meaning.” If he could turn back time, if he could find a way, he’d take back all the words that hurt you.

He then snarkily links Cher's "If I Could Turn Back Time." This of course is liberal bloggers' method of expressing contempt so perfect you don't even bother with a solid joke. (Actually, I guess it's my method, too.)

He not only had to correct and revise statements he had made in the past. He also kept making new statements during the hearings that required real-time renunciation. He called the Iranian government “elected, legitimate,” and when asked to clarify how this could describe a government whose election process and popular legitimacy are, to say the least, shaky...

The most embarrassing moment came when Hagel defended a policy of containing nuclear Iran, before being reminded by the incredulous (friendly!) chairman Carl Levin that this was not the administration’s policy. Hagel quickly agreed.

And you want that kind of firmness of mind and steelness of resolve in your Secretary of Defense.

Oooh! This gives me a chance to repost my theory from yesterday's "NBC fraudulent editing" post.

----------

"You know what I bet is happening that is causing all these media outlets to simultaneously start PMSing? What with the AP calling out NBC, and this internal WaPo feud, and the strife over at CNN, etc? Now that the election is over, I bet that all of Obammy's media buttboys aren't getting the super-special preferential treatment from 1600 Pennsylvania Ave anymore. The phone's stopped ringing and the Preezy isn't answering their text messages. And just like any jilted woman with a clingy-complex will make everyone's life a living hell if she feels she's been unfairly dumped by her boyfriend, so, too, will the MFM.

I suspect that there's a lot of fingerpointing and blame-casting behind the scenes. Lots of suspicious glares and accusations: "You homewrecker! You stole him from me! I used to go to all the trendy White House parties, and now only YOU get invited!"

It's a media catfight, and everyone's piling on. "

31 A theory I have:

1. No one in the White House really talked to Hagel for any length of time.

2. Those who did talk to him heard mumbo jumbo but since they didn't understand Pannetta or Gates when they spoke about the Defense Department (it being all military-like and stuff) they saw nothing unusual in his incomprehensible answers.

3. No one prepared Hagel for the testimony because (since he opposed Bush on almost everything) they just assumed he was a smart guy, according to their standards.

4. Everything went swimmingly with Kerry, who is a good talker, so why not Hagel? Well, everyone in the Senate wanted Kerry OUT. Hagel was ALREADY out, so nothing was to be gained by Republicans giving him a pass. Plus Hagel is not a good talker.

5. I love it when Obama is proven to be lazy and uninformed, which he is. (Also evil, but proof of that is seen every day.)

Israel is not omnipotent, but okay, let's grant that Israel will go to extraordinary lengths to prevent the Iranian bomb, up to and including pre-emptive war with Iran and whatever Arab countries decide to roll the dice.

Others have pointed this out but it bears repeating: Hagel's nomination is a message; rather, appointing a man whom one Senator (I forget which...Cruz, I think), called 'the most antisemitic member of this body' as Secretary of Defense is a huge message, audible and visible to anyone who hears and sees.

To Iran, Obama says 'Privately, I don't care if you get the bomb. Let's talk.' To Israel, he's showing them the soles of his feet, flipping them the bird, telling them they're on their own should hostilities break out. Of course, the Israelis have known that since Obama took office.

117 Part of a conservatives problem when speaking with or to a Liberal, is that we're polite.

We try to have a discussion and persuade the other of at least some of our arguments having worth.

A liberal starts from the position that everyone else (especially YOU) are wrong and should be stopped from repeating their WRONG ideas.

They interrupt (you can always tell a liberal on a talk show because they're the ones who'll will interrupt when the other people are talking. Unless they're liberals also), if they're losing the argument they'll change the subject, they'll purposefully misinterpret something someone's said and if all else fails they will attack the person verbally and sometimes physically. Yeah I remember those days. Bush would screw up embarrassingly and the WHOLE media would make excuses and kill the story so you never heard about it. I have no idea why Ace didn't make up for the obviously inadequate bordering on derelict coverage the media gave to Bush's mistakes. Clearly that, at that time, was the most important thing Ace could have been reporting on, how the media ignored Bush's mistakes.

Why? You think it's because Bush was white? There are you happy now? Got your point across?

We're only criticizing the man who has single handedly ruined the financial recovery of the nation, stole from the treasury to enrich his friends, allowed ambassadors to be murdered without any effort to aid or reinforce them, driven over 10% of the population into bankruptcy, increased our debt to unrepayable levels, ruined our credit rating, turned our backs on allies, bypassed the Constitutional safeguards, ignored the law, sneered at those who attempted to compromise for the sake of the country, saddled the country with a dysfunctional and over costly program that 75% of the public didn't want . . . need I go on. But of course it's only because he's black.

And by the way, how come he's considered black? His mother was white. Are you liberals proponents of the one drop rule favored by Dixiecrat KKK'ers and South Africa?

Anything Bush ever did pales in comparison to this traitor in the White House.

258 yes you did. you said we supported the Taliban in the '80s -- we didn't, the initial post-Soviet government and the future Taliban government were not the same thing, but OK i understand, it's appealing to your worldview. anyway this would seem to imply that the Taliban Are Bad, relevant to bad stuff that happened in the future, and we shouldn't have supported them (living in your false history here for a sec.) but then, once we're actively against them, they're suddenly totally irrelevant to al Qaeda and 9/11, cuz like, language barriers.

look i don't give a shit if you want to take a non-interventionist stance on things, but this twisting of history to suit your own ends is extra-lame.

Heh.

Let's play fun with numbers. Let's say the national debt was $2 and Bush added One Billion Dollars to it. Well let's see.... Bush increased the National Debt by 50,000,000%

Then Obama comes along and adds a TRILLION dollars to it. He increases the national debt by ~
100,000%

Therefore according to Andrew BUSH was much worse than OBAMA.

286 "Read Hagel's quote. It's not *how* he said things. Hagel wanted to go back so he could "change the words AND the meaning." "

Ok, let's discuss this. Cruz went after Hagel with an obscure clip from an show on Al Jazeera back in 2009.

Cruz charges that Hagel agreed with the caller that Israel had committed war crimes.

What did Hagel actually say?

This man who called Al Jazeera to this talk show rambled on about a bunch of crap, a lot of it barely even intelligible. It was a damn speech. In this segment the host was specifically asking about whether the world needs strong moral leadership. He wasn't asking specially about everything this caller said.

All Hagel said was we need better moral leadership in the world.

On the second quote, Cruz charges Hagel as supporting the statement that America is the world's "bully."

Hagel said nothing of the sort. If you watch the full exchange Hagel actually defended the Bush admin to a certain extent, essentially saying the bully characterization isn't true but he understands how some could perceive it that way.

Now, frankly, the man's got a sensible background, and I'm sure Hagel's positions on certain issues e.g. the Zionist Entity are not completely unknown in the GOP. We as a nation DO need to avoid bending ourselves over in the interest of ANY particular ally.

But...that doesn't mean we shouldn't be prepared to nuke Tehran at the push of a button if necessary. His sin is not that he's wrong on the issues, but that he's so blatantly pandering to the Obamist cause that he sounds really stupid in the process.

Firstly, the Taliban is not al-Qaeda. They were the Islamic government of Afghanistan which had granted members of al Qaeda guest status. The attack was created and masterminded by Bin Laden and other members of Al Qadea.

But even so, 3,000 dead Americans will be a foot note when it is compared to the death and destruction which I expect to be let loose upon us with the ascendency of this current asshole regime.

We shall be lucky to avoid millions of deaths from allowing this current bastard to get into power. I am firmly convinced that this man will unleash the four horseman upon this nation.

Actually this isn't true. The Taliban was formed by a group of the mujaheddin in the 70s, specifically Mohammed Omar (alive today still), and they fought with them against the soviets. They were the same people. Taliban just means students, talib is student in Arabic. They were students of the Quran. A civil war ensued in Afghanistan while the soviets were there and continued after they left. Eventually this lead to them officially governing in the 90s. until 2001

Bush did not spend the Stimulus. Barack Spent it. The book-keeping games they play in Washington DC put this under the Bush Administration, but the reality is that it was not. Supposedly it was a bi-partisan effort to rescue the economy from severe economic peril. I said at the time it was bullshit, and it turned out to be exactly bullshit.

Take out the 800 billion stimulus from the "Bush" Column, put it under the "Barack" column, and recalculate your numbers.

Right not Stimulus Stimulus Stimulus. Liar.

TARP came not as planned expenditures. It came as an authorization. One that Obama was under no obligation to spend but did anyway. There were no requirements by law to spend a dime of that money it was left up to Obama. But spend spend spend did Obama. So no. Bush 25% for getting it passed. Obama 75% for actually blowing the money.

I like that. If a previous administration does it you *have* to follow suit? If it gives you discretionary funds you MUST spend them. And if you do you aren't responsible. You are just a lying troll

TARP BTW was fully supported and voted for by Obama. He could have stopped it in the Senate since the majority of it's support was Democrat. But rather than do that, or maybe curtail spending it in his term, in his term he went back to make sure he could spend the last 350 million on what he wanted.
